DAO ActiveX anyone?

LabView 5.1.1
NT4.0
Has anyone tried saving data to an access database file using DAO? I'm
having problem right now and I am wondering if anyone could lend me a .vi
(even if they remove all the fields except one) that opens a
workspace-database-recordset, then save an entry (AddNew/Update) and close
it. I would be forever grateful.
TIA,
John

Thanks Peter. I have successfully installed in and trying it out.
By the way, do you have an english version of your website?
Thanks again.

  • Large applications - Labview and other programming languages

    Hello Labview Users,
as the forum saw this very interesting thread about large applications programmed in Labview
(see: http://sine.ni.com/niforum/niforum?requireLogin=False&forumDU=http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?... ) I would like to ask the community about their experiences with Labview applications in combination with other programming languages.
In advance: I have several years of experience in programming Labview applications starting from quick-and-dirty solutions which had to run within few hours and complex test solutions. I saw Labview growing and becoming better with the released versions and lot of things I missed in former times got implemented in the meantime. Actually I have to develop a complexe ATE solution with numerous equipment to control and numerous data to be captured and archived. Despite the Verison 8 I still feel still some drawbacks of the LV concept which let me hestitate to setup the solution completly in Labview:
    1) It is alway hard to re-use code of complex applications since it is not possible to do some kind of global search an replace of functions
variables etc. It nearly impossible to re-use approved code structures (e.g a state machine) if the "inner part" is changing more the a little bit.
    2) If the application requires a certain flexibility (e.g. exchangeable test equipment of varying vendors) this is hard to implement since you have to define a lot of parameters through your hierarchy if you dont want use global variables which slow down your application and hide
    the code functionality.
    3) Despite modern PCs the look and feel of LV applications appears somewhat slow compared to other applications. For complex user interfaces the polling methode generates a lot of complex code. (I dont have expierence with the event-structure).
    Now my questions:
Do you have experience of implemention of complex solutions dividingthe code modules using Labview and other languages? Which other
languages did you use? Why did you use these languages (speed, flexibility of text based code, available library functions)? Did you found out this to improve your development time and code maintainibility?
(I concider a solution where I do the single tests with Labview-VIs but delegate all the test sequencing and data collection stuff written in PERL which allows really very compact code)
I'm curious what your experiences are.

Given that you're asking these questions in a forum for LabVIEW users the opinions given are going to be somewhat slanted towards the general like of LabVIEW. I've been working with LabVIEW for a long time, ever since 2.something on a Mac. I've written numerous large-scale applications as well as "mundane" instrument drivers. As you've noted you're experienced with LabVIEW, so you know some of its strengths and weaknesses.
    To address your specific questions:
    (1) Yes, that has always been a limitation in LabVIEW, but I don't believe it is an overriding one to choose C over LabVIEW. Putnam provided one workaround for the search and replace of VIs. Once you've programmed in LabVIEW long enough you get used to doing it this way. Is it clumsy? Yes. As for the re-use of code structures, that's not entirely true. You can create a "template" VI (a regular VI, not a .vit) that contains the code you want to re-use and place in your palette with the "Merge VI" option set. That way you can select it from your functions palette, plop it down on your diagram, and you get the "template" VI's diagram placed right into your new VI.
    (2) This is not something that is specific to LabVIEW, as this exists with any programming language. It's not the language that limits you here, it's how you've designed your code. In a language like C++ you would go with classes. You can do the same thing in LabVIEW. IVI is another option (though not preferred by me).
    (3) As Putnam mentioned, you should be using the event structure.
    Other thoughts:
The biggest strength I see with LabVIEW is that each VI is a miniature program, which allows development and debugging of functions a snap. With a language like C you have to write another program to call that function in order to debug it. The biggest weakness? I would say user interface. Yes, even with the event structure. Don't get me wrong, the event structure has vastly improved the way user interfaces and event handling in general are done with LabVIEW, but it simply doesn't hold muster to a program written in C or VB. ActiveX anyone? LabVIEW still doesn't do ActiveX properly in terms of actually getting the controls to work. Programming ActiveX controls is just plain aggravating what with all the property nodes taking up so much diagram space.
It certainly makes sense to use the best tools available to you to get the job done. In my recent projects I had to write software to run automated tests on some products my company made. The test modules were written in LabVIEW. The tests executive was a proprietary engine driven by a SQL Server database. I had to write a "wrapper" DLL that interfaced between the LabVIEW code and the executive since the executive hadn't been designed to call LabVIEW DLLs directly. This allowed us to use LabVIEW as the preferred language for developing the test modules and let the guys who were fiddling with the test executive do their bit. Of course, TestStand's premise is basically that.

  • Simple connection to Access - in hurry!!!

    Hello
I am really in hurry, all I need is to write table to Access
without some sophisticated tools. I can create the table in
Access and simple transfer some data in to it. How I can do this.
I have spent 2 days for searching for some SQL's, examples and
many more and I am exhausted.
I need working example of transferring data to MS Access from
Labview 6 in Windows NT 4.0
    Can anybody help me?
    Thanks
    regards
    PP

The attached example uses the DAO activeX object to send data to a database table. In this manner you can send data to any DSN with a ODBC driver. Other examples can be found on the ni website (www.ni.com).

  • Databases....ActiveX, Access, SQL, ODBC, DAO what it all means!?

So I know I need a database in the software I'm developing, but it seems like there are so many ways to implement it, that I don't know what to choose, and I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around the concepts of how each works.  I have been trying to read as much as I can, but I'd like to get a handle on the different ways to implement the databases before I delve in to one particular method.
I'm using windows XP for this, so some of what I mention below is only related to windows.
From my understanding now(correct me if I'm wrong)...
    1. I can use ActiveX to control MS Access Application to create a database, add/delete from the database, generate reports etc..etc...
    2. I can use a Data Access Object(DAO) to open a reference to a database to create and edit the database using SQL commands, which requires that I use Open Database Connectivity(ODBC) and define a Data Source Name(DSN) with the ODBC Data Source Administrator...
    3. I can use the Database Connectivity Toolkit, which can use either SQL or ActiveX Data Objects(ADO) or some other connection I don't know about?...
So I guess what I'm wondering is if there are advantages/disadvantages to each of these implementations?
For example, will using the first option with ActiveX add overhead vs. the other options since its going out to query MSAccess? By using the ActiveX commands is it always loading the Access Application?
Are there any pitfalls with using ODBC Data Source Administrator in windows? If I'm deploying to a number of system, will I need to setup the DSN on every system, or is this something I can do programmatically?
How does the Database Connectivity Toolkit compare to using ActiveX directly, or using a DAO and SQL? is the toolkit just a wrapper for these operations?
    Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Jonathan

    LV 8.2/8.5/8.6 - WinXP

    Malkier,
A lot of questions there...I am no expert on databases, but hopefully I can provide a few snippets of knowledge...
LabVIEW Database Connectivy Toolkit uses ADO(Activex Data Objects), which is obviosuly based on ActiveX commands.  I suppose you could almost refer to the toolkit as a wrapper, however the individual activex commands would take a lot of work.  In addition, they do not go through Microsoft Access and are easier to work with SQL, which is free(as opposed to Access).  You still need to set up your DSN in OBDC Data Source Administrator, however.
If you use file DSN, you set up one file, then distribute this file to all the computer you want to access. You do not need to 'set it up' for each machine.
For speed, NI recommends using the Native OLE DB server rather than a generic ODBC server.
For more information, I would recommend these two links:
Difference between ADO vs ODBC vs OLE DB
LabVIEW Database Connectivity Toolkit User Manual
Both of these may provide some more insight into what you are looking for.

  • NVIDIA control (Shadowplay mostly) with LabVIEW via ActiveX - Does anyone have documentation?

    Hi Everyone,
I'm looking to capture my monitor video at around 30fps. ShadowPlay works well with my graphics card, and I've found that there is an ActiveX Library on the PC. The attached screenshot shows an example code for 5 seconds of capture.
Shadowplay only captures one monitor but I want it to capture both, or make two videos (one for each monitor) preferably. Although a possible work around would be recording one at a time but being able to programatically change between the two. The Shadowplay library is: ShadowPlayServerLib and the NVIDIA Library is: NVI2Lib (I presume this is NVIDIA but could be wrong)
I can't find any documentation on the activeX commands so I'm struggling to know what inputs and outputs of the property nodes should be. Does anyone have any? A search of the internet brings up my own forum post on NVIDIAs website:
    https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/805560/geforce-experience/shadowplay-activex-documentation-...
Any help on the NVIDIA/ShadowPlay side of things would be great, alternatively any ideas for capturing video at 30fps (I tried to use .NET to capture the screen shots to png files but it only managed 2.5fps without saving them)
    Many thanks

  • Anyone ever seen an eventoracle.cpp line 370 error when dealing with an ActiveX control?

I'm dealing with an ActiveX control in LabView 7.0 that allows me to input video / audio from a USB webcamera. The ActiveX control also allows for the playback of the AVI files that are recorded from the webcam. During playback, I occasionally get a eventoracle.cpp @ line 370 error that is hard to diagnose and hard to reproduce. Any ideas? I do have the ability to move to LabView 7.1.1 if needed, but I have not tried that yet.

    hi there
you can adjust the user event data type to your needs. for example you can add a string "source" to the events data. additionally you can pass the "user parameter" to the callback vi to specify its location. see attachment below.....

  • Anyone worked with activex controls within labview

I am working on an new project and the instrument has an activex/Dcom control. Any ideas on how to work with this in my laview (8) environment?

Sounds like you are having a control which can be embedded.
You can create an empty ActiveX container on the front panel (Container palette). Rightclick it and select "Insert ActiveX Object" and browse for your control. If you did not register it, you will have to switch to "Create Object From File" and browse for the ocx/dll-file.
The rest is standard ActiveX interfacing using property/invoke nodes.
    hope this helps,

  • Has anyone developed Labview ActiveX interface for Newport Electronics iSeries process meters?

I am needing to obtain readings from a Newport Electrtonics iSeries strain gauge meter. ActiveX controls are available for the device. However, I am just learning ActiveX controls within Labview and I'm not having any luck. Any Labview examples specific to the iSeries device would be greatly appreciated.
The model of the meter is i8SL33-EI.
    Thanks,
    RS

Just take a look in LV examples to see haw to access methods and properties (even events) and then try with your control.
If this control has a GUI, you better put it in a container rather then using the reference (it's easier to check the functionality).
p.s.: make sure that your control is properly registered (if you don't have an installation program for it, use regsvr32.exe to do it)

The examples on NI's website were originally written using the DAO
model, but the latest one was written using the ADO model.
However, I am unable to find either example LLBs on their website
anymore. Maybe they're trying to push their SQL Toolkit.

Again, if anyone is intersted in VIs using ActiveX that works. He/she

  • Viewing Crystal 2008 ActiveX  on Access 2007 forms

Ok, i am a little confused as there seems to be a some doubt whether Crystal 2008 ActiveX can be used on Access forms. Another thread even has a reply that mentions that the ActiveX control is no longer included in Crystal Reports 2008..... Take a look at this, you can clearly see i have embedded the 2008 ActiveX control onto an Access form. link:[http://www.moktar.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/AX.JPG]
I have just installed 2008 and will get round to looking at this, however in my brief look, i couldnt see the run time library for 2008. By all accounts you can freely distribute the run time files for Crystal Reports 2008 as MSI or exe packages to your clients. I hope this is the case and i can get the ActiveX working.
If anyone has some information on this subject i will welcome reading it.
    This is how its used to be done;
    1) Open the Access form in design view.
    2) Click on Add Tool button on the toolbar.
    3) Select Crystal Reports ActiveX toolbar control from the list of controls.
    4) Place the control on the form.
    5) Click on the View Code toolbar button to open the code for the form
    6) Choose u2018Referencesu2019 from the u2018Toolsu2019 menu
    7) Select u2018Crystal Reports ActiveX Design and Runtime Library 11.Xu2019 from the list of references and add to the project.
    8) On the Form_Load() event, please use the code given below to pass the report to the viewer:
    Dim crReport as CRAXDRT.Report
    Dim crApplication as New CRAXDRT.Application
u2018 Use the appropriate path for the report
    Set crReport = crApplication.OpenReport(u201CC:\Report1.rptu201D)
u2018 ReportSource property and ViewReport method will not be displayed on the viewer control
    CrystalActiveXReportViewer0.ReportSource = crReport
    CrystalActiveXReportViewer0.ViewReport
'Hey Presto, the Crystal control on the Access form is now displaying a report. However, you had the age old issue of distributing the runtime files to clients that dont have crystal reports installed, and even more so of an issue, as this is Access and no method of doing it. I was hoping that 2008 with its MSI and EXE versions of the runtime files would solve this age old problem.
    Thanks
    Simon.

    Hello Simon,
The RDC was retired after Crystal Reports XI R2 and no longer exists in CR 2008.
The viewer control you are seeing is not meant for RDC applications.
You will need to move to Java or .NET if you plan on using CR 2008.
    Best Regards,
    Jason

  • Clientless SSL VPN and ActiveX question

    Hey All,
First post for me here, so be gentle.  I'll try to be as detailed as possible.
With the vast majority of my customers, I am able to configure an IPSEC L2L VPN, and narrow the traffic down to a very minimal set of ports.  However, I have a customer that does not want to allow a L2L VPN tunnel between their remote site, and their NOC center.  I thought this might be a good opportunity to get a clientless (they don't want to have to launch and log into a separate client) SSL VPN session setup.  Ultimately, this will be 8 individual sites, so setting up SSL VPN's at each site would be cost prohibitive from a licensing perspective.  My focus has been on using my 5510 (v8.2(5)) at my corp site as the centralized portal entrance, and creating bookmarks to each of the other respective sites, since I already have existing IPSEC VPN's via ASA5505, (same rev as the 5510 )setup with each of the sites.
First issue I've run into is that I can only access bookmarks that point to the external address for the remote web-server (the site has a static entry mapping an external address to the internal address of the web server).  I am unable to browse (via bookmark) to the internal address of the remote web server.  Through my browser at the office, I can access the internal address fine, just not through the SSL VPN portal.  I am testing this external connectivity using a cell card to be able to simulate outside access.  Is accessing the external IP address by design, or do I have something hosed?
Second issue I face is when I access the external address through the bookmark, I am ultimately able to log onto my remote website, and do normal browsing and javascript-type functions.  I am not able to use controls that require my company's ActiveX controls (video, primarily).  I did enable ActiveX relay, and that did allow the browser to start prompting me to install the controls as expected, but that still didn't allow the video stream through.  The stream only runs at about 5 fps, so it's not an intense stream.
I have researched hairpinning for this situation, and "believe" that I have the NAT properly defined - even going as far as doing an ANY ANY, just for testing purposes to no avail.  I do see a decent number of "no translates" from a show nat:

192.168.2.0 is my corp network range
192.168.2.171 is my internal IP for corp ASA5510
97.x.x.x is the external interface for my corp ASA5510
192.168.16.34 is the internal interface for the remote ASA5505
64.x.x.x is the external interface for the remote ASA5505
192.168.17.0, and 192.168.18.0 are two other private LANS behind the remote 5505
As you can see, I have things reasonably wide open - with no port restrictions on this one yet - this is for troubleshooting purposes, and it will get restrictive as soon as I figure this out   Right now, the ASA5510 is pretty restrictive, and to be brutally honest, I'm not certain I'm even using the packet tracer 100% proper to be able to simulate coming from the outside of the network through my ASA5510, out to a remote ASA5505, and to a web server behind that 5505.  I'm sure that the issue is probably going to be a mix of ACL's between the 5510, and the 5505.
I guess the main question, is Clientless SSL VPN really a good choice for this, or are there other real alternatives - especially since my client doesn't want to have to install, or use an actual client (like AnyConnect), nor do they want to have an always-on IPSEC VPN.  Am I going about this the right way?  Anyone have any suggestions, or do I have my config royally hosed?
Thanks much for any and all ideas!

Hey All,  I appreciate all of the views on this post.  I would appreciate any input - even if you think it might be far-fetched.  I'm grasping at straws, and am super-hesitant to tell my customer this is even remotely possible if I can't have a POC myself.  Thanks, in advance!!

  • Events problem with (Java and ActiveX)

    Hi,
I use an ActiveX component with Java and i've got a problem with events.
Java classes were generated with Bridge2Java (IBM).
In order to manage events I added a listener in my application :
         javaMyActiveX = new MyActiveX();
         javaMyActiveX.add_DMyActiveXEventsListener(new _DMyActiveXEventsAdapter());
I also added a constructor in the _DMyActiveXEventsAdapter class and I fill the body of methods.
The ActiveX generates two types of events :
    - The ones are directly generated by methods.
    - The others are generated by a thread.
With MS Products (VB, Visual C++, Visual J++), I catch all events.
With java (jdk 1.4), I catch only events generated by methods.
    Can anyone help me.

I'm not 100% sure, but the last time I used that bridge, it only worked if you ran your Java app within a Microsoft VM.

  • Excel ActiveX invoke nodes are broken

I am using LabVIEW 2007.  We are using a VI that runs on most of the PC's in our facility however on some the "invoke node" related to Excel functions don't operate. They are broken and the VIs won't run.  We get errors that the "Invoke Node: contains unwired ro bad terminals".  When going to select methods or properties not all of the properties are shown as seen on the functional PCs. Some of the properties are missing from the selection menus, thus making it incompatible.
Has anyone seen this problem and a solution?
    Thanks
    Manliff,

What about separating the compiled code from the source?  I recognize that this will only work in LV2010, but I expect that that will prevent the compiler from breaking activeX code that depends on a different version than the local one...
Testing this idea is on my to-do-list, but I was wondering if anyone has tried it already.
