Data Capture on Host VI without Massive FIFO?!?

Hi guys,
First post on the boards and about two weeks into LV Realtime/FPGA so be gentle!
I'm capturing data from a system using a CRio 9082 and NI9215 A/D converter. The FPGA vi runs a timed loop (10 us or 100kS/s) which pulls in data and sends it to a Target-to-Host DMA FIFO (4096 long, single precision). Since I want to synchronise data acquisition to a TTL output, the FPGA also sends out a True/False value through a DIO port (NI9402). So, for example, if I want a 100 Hz TTL pulse and the loop time is 10 us, then a full TTL cycle will last 1000 loops with the half cycle lasting 500 loops. Both the position in the TTL cycle (0-1000) and the data acquired at that position in the cycle are interleaved in the FIFO. I've attached an image of the VI.
The Host vi simply reads the values from the FIFO, decimates the interleaved output, and stores the data in an array for subsequent processing. I've also attached an image of the Host vi. The problem is that the data acquisition time could be as high as 10 seconds, which would mean the host-side FIFO would be 2 million elements long!
SO, my question is how do I modify the host vi so that instead of waiting for the host-side FIFO to be filled, its size can be reduced and yet not lose data points in the filling of the array? You might rightly ask why I've done things that way but I found that filling up a massive FIFO ensures that I don't lose the continuous TTL position data, but then I figured it was grossly inefficient and some sage advice is necessary!
Thanks!!

No problem.
Ordering issues in FIFOs have been a PITA for me for a while. Experimenting with different techniques suggests the following:
- Never let your FIFO fill up, otherwise you're just throwing data away. Make sure you sample often enough (and more importantly, remove enough samples) to avoid this.
- On this note, only fill up your FIFO when you choose to. You can use a sequence frame before the acquisition in the RT loop, dump in a While loop and wire a control to the stop terminal. You can then switch this to true in the host application when you're ready to receive data.
- Timed loops (or while loops with timers) probably won't execute in a consistent manner on a Windows system. If you're hoping to acquire 10000 samples consisting of two channels every 100 ms, the loop might execute every 101 ms if you're unlucky. This means there may be more data in your FIFO, and you may not necessarily have an integer multiple of the number of channels. So if you have two channels, and there are only five samples in the FIFO when you come to read, the next sample into the FIFO (and thus the next sample out!) will no longer be in the same order as the previous packet.
- How do you get round this? Well, you can buffer your data in: run the timed loop more quickly, read all the elements available in the FIFO and concatenate the resulting array with the previous iteration via a shift register. Keep doing this until the concatenated array reaches the requisite number of samples (e.g. your 10000 samples earlier) and then offload the results upstream, reinitialising the array to which you concatenate elements. Kudos to my colleague, -K-, for suggesting this to me.
- Remember to stop the target from filling the FIFO when you have all the data you want, and to empty the FIFO and dispose of any additional data that may have been lobbed in there.

  • Passing data from RT host to FPGA through DMA FIFO

    Hello,
    I am trying to write some data from an RT host to FPGA target using DMA FIFO then process this data and then read them back from the FPGA target to the RT host through another DMA FIFO. I am working on NI PXIe chassis 1062Q, with NI PXIe-8130 embedded RT controller and NI PXIe-7965R FPGA target.
    The problem I am facing is that I want to send three different arrays, two of the same size and the third one with different size, and I need the smaller one to be sent to the FPGA first. I tried using flat sequece with two frames in the FPGA VI. In the first frame I read and write the first array in a while loop which is finite (i.e., finite number of iterations). The second frame contains the process of reading and writing the second two arrays (of the same size) in a while loop that can be finite or infinite (according to a control). The problem is that this didn't work. The 2 arrays are displayed on the front panel of the RT host VI and are working fine, however, the array that should have been read in the first sequence doesn't show up on the front panel of the RT host VI. This doesn't make sense because if it is not passed from the host to the fpga and vice versa then the second frame shouldn't have been executed. Note that I am wiring (-1) to the timeout to block the while loop iterations till the passing of each element is complete. Thus the first while loop has 3 iterations only. Could someone help me undersdtand why this happens and how to solve this problem?
    I am attaching a picture of both the host and the fpga vi.
    Thank you.

    No need to initalize the arrays with values that you will immediately overwrite.  Here's what I believe to be equivalent code:
    The array outputs should be wired directly to the FPGA FIFO writes.  Do not use local variables when you can wire directly.
    If you know that you want to transfer the Temp Data Array first, why not make your code do that?  Eliminate the sequence structure, and put the functions in the order in which you want them to execute.  Use the FPGA reference and error wires to enforce that order.  You might consider writing the Temp Data Array, reading it back, then writing the Real and Imag A arrays, to see if that gets you the results you expect.  Run the code in simulation (in the project, right-click on the FPGA target and execute on the host with simulated IO) so that you can use execution highlighting and probes to see what is happening.  Wire the error wires through and see if you get an error anywhere.  Make sure you're not missing something simple like looking at the wrong starting array index.

  • RT - How can I make data transfer to host faster?

    Hi
    I have created a program that acquires data on FPGA then transfers them to RT so RT can send them up to the windows host once UI is connected.
    The program is based on message type structure as in NI's examples.
    However, I have one problem the data to windows host is not transferred fast enough.
    Pic1 shows the offending bit of code and FPGA.png what's hiding in the subVi.
    FPGA is meant to acquire to cycles of a sine wave. In this case it approximately 40 ms of data at 25us sampling rate (40kS/s 8 channels). Later the data is sent to the host. As you can see I have a dedicated stream for data only and a different one for message passing.
    If I disable the code in the case structure this loop executes in 39-40 ms, however when I start sending the data to the host the rate drops to 57-60 ms per iteration and that sooner or later leads to buffer overflow.
    I have experimented with passing the acquired data to a different loop using a queue but that wasn't faster. I have also tried pipelining but that did not speed it up either. Would you have any suggestions how I could improve my transfer rates?
    Thank you.

    Hi barteklul,
    There are 2 main methods of achieving fast data transfer between RT and Host PC:
    1. Using the "Shared Variables", they allow you to transfer data deterministically from
    RT to Host PC, usually are used to monitor data.
    Please have a look at this article:
    http://zone.ni.com/reference/en-XX/help/370622J-01/lvrtconcepts/rt_projectvariable/
    This is the example code:
    https://decibel.ni.com/content/docs/DOC-15928
    The only disadvantage of such method is that if for example RT gets data really fast
    your Host PC can miss some samples.
    2. In order to receive all data from RT
    (guaranteed 100% data transfer without missing any samples) "Network Streams" should be used.
    It is a little bit more complex to implement, but if you want to store data to the file "Network Streams"
    are strongly suggested. In addition "Network Streams" are not deterministic.
    For more details about network streams please read this article:
    http://www.ni.com/white-paper/12267/en/
    At the moment I see that you are using "Network Streams" to transfer data and also I can see that you have some timing on RT
    which can slow down the data transfer rate. I suggest you to transfer data to Host PC as soon as it comes into the FIFO.
    Also if you transfer data just to monitor it, I suggest you to try Shared Variables method.
    I hope that you will this information useful!

  • Using Change Data Capture in SSIS - how to handle schema changes

    I was asked to consider change data capture for a database recently.  I can see that from the database perspective, its quite nice.  When I considered how I'd do this in SSIS, it seemed pretty obvious that I might have a problem, but I wanted to
    confirm here.
    The database in question changes the schema about once per month in production.  We have a lot of controls in our environment, so everytime a tables schema is changed, I'd have to do a formal change request to deal with a change to my code
    base, in this case my SSIS package; it can be a lot of work.   If I wanted to track the data changes for inserts, update and deletes using an SSIS package to send the data changes to the destination tables, would I have to change my SSIS package
    with every schema change, or is there a way to keep the exact same SSIS package with CDC without having to change it every month?
    Thanks,
    Keith

    Hi Keith,
    What is your exact requirement?
    If you want to capture the object_created, object_deleted or object_altered informations, you can try using
    Extended events .
    As mentioned in your OP:
    "If I wanted to track the data changes for inserts, update and deletes using an SSIS package to send the data changes to the destination tables, would I have to change my SSIS package with
    every schema change, or is there a way to keep the exact same SSIS package with CDC without having to change it every month?"
    If you want the databases in two different environments to be in sync, then take periodic
    backup and apply(restore) on the another destination DB.
    (or)
    you can also try with
    SQL Server replication if it is really needed.
    As I understand from your description, if you want the table data & schema to be in sync in two different database:
    then create job [script that will drop the destination DB table & create the copy of source DB table ] as per your requirement:
    --CREATE DATABASE db1
    --CREATE DATABASE db2
    USE db1
    GO
    CREATE TABLE tbl(Id INT)
    USE db2
    GO
    IF EXISTS (SELECT * FROM SYS.OBJECTS WHERE name = 'tb1' and TYPE = 'u')
    DROP TABLE dbo.tb1
    SELECT * INTO db2.dbo.tb1 FROM db1.dbo.tbl
    SELECT * FROM dbo.tb1
    --DROP DATABASE db1,db2

  • Upgrade of Database with Oracle Change Data Capture

    Hello,
    We are upgrading and moving our database to a different server.
    The move is from 10G R1 database on Solaris to 11G R2 on Linux.
    Our database uses Oracle Change Data Capture.
    What is the best way to perform this migration? Unlike in the approach below, ideally, it would be without any manual steps to drop and recreate CDC subscriptions, change tables, etc.
    Thanks.
    Considerations for Exporting and Importing Change Data Capture Objects
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B13789_01/server.101/b10736/cdc.htm#i1027532
    Starting in Oracle Databse 10g, Oracle Data Pump is the supported export and import utility for Change Data Capture. Change Data Capture change sources, change sets, change tables, and subscriptions are exported and imported by the Oracle Data Pump expdp and impdp commands with the following restrictions:
    After a Data Pump full database import operation completes for a database containing AutoLog Change Data Capture objects, the following steps must be performed to restore these objects:
    1. The publisher must manually drop the change tables with the SQL DROP TABLE command. This is needed because the tables are imported without the accompanying Change Data Capture metadata.
    2. The publisher must re-create the AutoLog change sources, change sets, and change tables using the appropriate DBMS_CDC_PUBLISH procedures.
    3. Subscribers must re-create their subscriptions to the AutoLog change sets.

    Hello,
    I opened SR with Oracle Support, they are suggesting to perform full database import/export
    Change Data Capture change sources, change sets, change tables, and subscriptions are exported and imported by the Oracle Data Pump expdp and impdp commands with the following restrictions.
    Change Data Capture objects are exported and imported only as part of full database export and import operations (those in which the expdp and impdb commands specify the FULL=y parameter). Schema-level import and export operations include some underlying objects (for example, the table underlying a change table), but not the Change Data Capture metadata needed for change data capture to occur."
    CDC has different implementation methods:
    You may use the below query to determine-
    select SOURCE_NAME, SOURCE_DESCRIPTION, CREATED, SOURCE_TYPE, SOURCE_DATABASE, SOURCE_ENABLED from change_sources;
    – Synchronous CDC: with this implementation method you capture changes
    synchronously on the source database into change tables. This method uses
    internal database triggers to enable CDC. Capturing the change is part of the
    original transaction that introduces the change thus impacting the performance
    of the transaction.
    – Asynchronous Autolog CDC: this implementation method requires a staging
    database separate from the source database. Asynchronous Autolog CDC uses
    the database's redo transport services to transport redo log information from
    the source database to the staging database1. Changes are captured at the
    staging database. The impact to the source system is minimal, but there is some
    latency between the original transaction and the change being captured.
    As suggested in the document-
    Change Data Capture objects are exported and imported only as part of full database export and import operations (those in which the expdp and impdb commands specify the FULL=y parameter). Schema-level import and export
    operations include some underlying objects (for example, the table underlying a change table), but not the Change Data Capture metadata needed for change data capture to occur.
    ■ AutoLog change sources, change sets, and change tables are not supported.
    Starting in Oracle Database 10g, Oracle Data Pump is the supported export and import utility for Change Data Capture.
    Re-Creating AutoLog Change Data Capture Objects After an Import Operation
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14223/cdc.htm#i1027532
    After a Data Pump full database import operation completes for a database containing AutoLog Change Data Capture objects, the following steps must be performed to restore these objects:
    a. The publisher must manually drop the database objects underlying AutoLog Change Data Capture objects.
    b. The publisher must re-create the AutoLog change sources, change sets, and change tables using the appropriate DBMS_CDC_PUBLISH procedures.
    c. Subscribers must re-create their subscriptions to the AutoLog change sets.

  • Change Data Capture (CDC) now capturing default values

    Hi,
    I am using SQL Server 2012 and to me a part of data captured by CDC is not making sense.
    I have a table called 'Schema.Table1', and I enabled CDC on it by running 'sys.sp_cdc_enable_table'. I see that a table called 'cdc.Schema_Table1_CT' got created which now gets an entry when ever I Insert, Update or delete a record in the original table.
    Till this point every thing works fine.
    My original Table has a NOT NULL INT column called 'AuditTrackerUserID' with a default value of 1996. My application does not provides a value for this column, but because the column itself has a default value, records get inserted without error.
    When I try to execute the following Query I see multiple records with __$operation of 3 and 1.
    SELECT * from cdc.Schema_Table1_CT where AuditTrackerUserID IS NULL
    My expectation is that I should not ever see any record returned by this query because AuditTrackerUserID is a not null column, but I do.
    Can anyone please explain this behavior>

  • Change data capture from DRM to Target system

    Hi All,
    I have a situation where client wants Hyperion DRM to be single source of truth and pass Hierarchy information from DRM to subscribing target systems. There are 3 target systems and the database is MS SQL server.
    Now in the export profile ,I am using database export where I have mapped the DRM node/properties to target table's columns. For the initial load it is a new record in the database and the data flows as it is a 1:1 mapping, however if few of the property value changes and I wan to update only the corresponding columns what will the architecture for push the change data in to target.
    Can we achieve this without have any staging tables and capture the change data ?
    Do need to use ODI ?
    Does DRM has any work around without putting extra effort hrs by building CDC tables ?
    I will really appreciate your suggestions and comments on this......

    Thanks for the quick reply. However I was trying to resolve the Change data capture in Hierarcy through as" Database Table" but it seems when we choose the DEVICE option as database in the target tab of export it can only export or insert new records into the tables but cannot update and existing record.
    PLease correct me if my understnding is wrong ?????

  • Oracle 11g Change data Capture

    We have setup a change data capture on Oracle 11gR2. the records that get changed in the source tables will get captured in the change tables. I have some unnecessary rows in the source tables, which i would like to eliminate them without replicating the changes to target table. i know the key values to identify the rows that got populated in the change table and can manually delete it. Is there any known/unknown side affects to eliminate the records from the change table.

    Hi,
    you can use dbms_streams.set_tag to hide transactions from replication.
    see: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e10705/rep_tags.htm#STREP390
    sample:
    BEGIN
    DBMS_STREAMS.SET_TAG( tag => HEXTORAW('1D'));
    delete from my_table where column1 = 1;
    commit;
    DBMS_STREAMS.SET_TAG( tag => null);
    END;
    the apply tag has to be another than is set to your apply process.
    therefore first determine the actual tag for your session:
    SET SERVEROUTPUT ON
    DECLARE
    raw_tag RAW(2048);
    BEGIN
    raw_tag := DBMS_STREAMS.GET_TAG();
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('Tag Value = ' || RAWTOHEX(raw_tag));
    END;
    first try with a sample...
    kind regards

    I lost my iPhone device, how can I get my data back on another one without using an iCloud backup just back up on i Tunes, Please Help.??

    You can find the backup files and then copy them to a safe place if you are worrying about this.
    iTunes places the backup files in these places:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    The "~" represents your Home folder. If you don't see Library in your Home folder, hold Option and click the Go menu.
    Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata%, then press Return.
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, then choose Run. In the search bar, type %appdata%, then click OK.

  • Can you help me about change data captures in 10.2.0.3

    Hi,
    I made research about Change Data Capture and I try to implement it between two databases for two small tables in 10g release 2.MY CDC implementation uses archive logs to replicate data.
    Change Data Capture Mode Asynchronous autolog archive mode..It works correctly( except for ddl).Now I have some questions about CDC implementation for large tables.
    I have one senario to implement but I do not find exactly how can I do it correctly.
    I have one table (name test) that consists of 100 000 000 rows , everyday 1 000 000 transections occurs on this table and I archive the old
    data more than one year manually.This table is in the source db.I want to replicate this table by using Change Data Capture to other stage database.
    There are some questions about my senario in the following.
    1.How can I make the first load operations? (test table has 100 000 000 rows in the source db)
    2.In CDC, it uses change table (name test_ch) it consists of extra rows related to opearations for stage table.But, I need the orjinal table (name test) for applicaton works in stage database.How can I move the data from change table (test_ch) to orjinal table (name test) in stage database? (I don't prefer to use view for test table)
    3.How can I remove some data from change table(name test_ch) in stage db?It cause problem or not?
    4.There is a way to replicate ddl operations between two database?
    5. How can I find the last applied log on stage db in CDC?How can I find archive gap between source db and stage db?
    6.How can I make the maintanence of change tables in stage db?

    Asynchronous CDC uses Streams to generate the change records. Basically, it is a pre-packaged DML Handler that converts the changes into inserts into the change table. You indicated that you want the changes to be written to the original table, which is the default behavior of Streams replication. That is why I recommended that you use Streams directly.
    <p>
    Yes, it is possible to capture changes from a production redo/archive log at another database. This capability is called "downstream" capture in the Streams manuals. You can configure this capability using the MAINTAIN_* procedures in DBMS_STREAMS_ADM package (where * is one of TABLES, SCHEMAS, or GLOBAL depending on the granularity of change capture).
    <p>
    A couple of tips for using these procedures for downstream capture:
    <br>1) Don't forget to set up log shipping to the downstream capture database. Log shipping is setup exactly the same way for Streams as for Data Guard. Instructions can be found in the Streams Replication Administrator's Guide. This configuration has probably already been done as part of your initial CDC setup.
    <br>2) Run the command at the database that will perform the downstream capture. This database can also be the destination (or target) database where the changes are to be applied.
    <br>3) Explicitly define the parameters capture_queue_name and apply_queue_name to be the same queue name. Example:
    <br>capture_queue_name=>'STRMADMIN.STREAMS_QUEUE'
    <br>apply_queue_name=>'STRMADMIN.STREAMS_QUEUE'

    SMS Transferring/downloading/backup : Is there a way to download/port the missing data/SMS to one iPhone without overwriting the new SMS on the newer iPhone? Here is my dilemma. My iPhone quit working and I couldn’t get it fixed as quickly as I needed to. I bought a used iPhone and started using it normally and downloaded the backup from itunes/icloud. There was a large gap in data where the first iPhone didn’t backup when I thought it had. I have SMS data on both phonesnow and  I need them for a court hearing. I have since had the other iPhone repaired and working perfectly. Will downloading a backup wipe out the newer SMS data? I am nervous because I can’t lose the information or my case mey be compromised. Any “Real Help” including programs that work to accomplish this would be very helpful. Thank You in advance…

    No, direct access to manipulating the phone's filesystem is not permitted for 3rd party apps in the iOS.  It can't be done without hacking the phone, which you certainly don't want to do.  The messages can be combined and viewed on your computer, but not on a single phone.

  • Export table data in a flat file without using FL

    Hi,
    I am looking for options where I can export table data into a flat file without using FL(File Layout) i.e., by using App Engine only.
    Please share your experience if you did anything as this
    Thanks

    A simple way to export any record (table/view) to an csv fiel, is to create a rowset and loop through all record fields, like below example code
    Local Rowset &RS;
    Local Record &Rec;
    Local File &MYFILE;
    Local string &FileName, &strRecName, &Line, &Seperator, &Value;
    Local number &numRow, &numField;
    &FileName = "c:\temp\test.csv";
    &strRecName = "PSOPRDEFN";
    &Seperator = ";";
    &RS = CreateRowset(@("Record." | &strRecName));
    &RS.Fill();
    &MYFILE = GetFile(&FileName, "W", %FilePath_Absolute);
    If &MYFILE.IsOpen Then
       For &numRow = 1 To &RS.ActiveRowCount
          &Rec = &RS(&numRow).GetRecord(@("RECORD." | &strRecName));
          For &numField = 1 To &Rec.FieldCount
             &Value = String(&Rec.GetField(&numField).Value);
             If &numField = 1 Then
                &Line = &Value;
             Else
                &Line = &Line | &Seperator | &Value;
             End-If;
          End-For;
          &MYFILE.WriteLine(&Line);
       End-For;
    End-If;
    &MYFILE.Close(); You can of course create an application class for generic calling this piece of code.
    Hope it helps.

  • Change Data Capture How to Tell which you are running Sync or Asyn

    Hi ,
    I am taking over a new system that has change data capture running, but Im really confused how this is running. Most of the CDC is set up using Sync(triggers), but I have about 5 tables that DO NOT have system generated triggers on them. I know Streams is NOT running/configured. I know Capture is not running/configured (because nothing in DBA_CAPTURE table). I can tell that these 5 tables are still getting updated in the change table schema. I can not figure out how the 5 tables that DO NOT have triggers on them are updating the change data set tables.
    I had thought the the 5 tables, must be configured with HOTLOG, but when I look at the CHANGE_SETS table they all (including these 5 tables) are set to CHANGE SOURCE NAME = SYNC SOUCE. I would expected that to be HOTLOG_SOURCE. So I "assume" they aren't set up using Asnc. hot log mode. So maybe the other Async modes are used, but not pushed to another database? Is that possible?
    Any other ideas on how to figure out how the CDC is set up for these 5 tables?
    thanks for your help.

    Thanks for the reply, but I think I must have not stated the problem clearly. I dont WANT to set the source I want to figure out how this CDC is working. I see ALL the sources are currently set to SYNC_SOURCE. Almost all of the tables are set up with system triggers on them, but 5 dont have system triggers, yet the source says SYNC_SOURCE. I did validate that the change tables are getting updated for these tables. my question is how are they getting updated? I "assume" since they dont have system triggers ont eh table they aren't synchoronus cdc (like the other tables are). yet the source says SYNC_SOURCE. What am I missing? How can I tell if the redo log is populating those changes tables? Im pretty sure it is (Becuase there aren't triggers or jobs running), but Im curious if there is a way to tell for sure.
    Thanks,
