Data Sockets on Mac???

Hi folks,
I apologize if this is a totally stupid question... but does Labview 7
Data Sockets work on Mac OS X? I've searched all over the web, and this
usenet group, and I only find one reference that seems to indicate it
should work.
I've got the Labview examples ("DataSocket Read.vi" and "DataSocket
Write.vi") running on the mac, but they're not talking. The connection
status indicates that they're not connecting. I suspect that I don't
have a Data Socket Server running, but I don't even see reference to
one on my Mac OS X, Labview 7 environment.
I also have a PC/Windows and the examples run/communicate fine. I saw a
separate app for the Data Socket Server and obviously had to launch
that (as per Labview documentation).
Thanks,in advance,
rmp

Hi rmp,
Just as you have observed, Macs don't run the DataSocket Server and therefore don't support DataSocket.  With Mac OS X, you can be a client to a DataSocket Server running on a supported OS, but you cannot run the server yourself.  Check out this KnowledgeBase: Which Products Support DataSocket? for some more information.
Please let me know if you have further questions!

  • What is the purpose of open/close connection data socket?

    Hello everyone,
I am writing and reading values in OPC Server through data socket. What is the purpose of open/close connection data socket when writing /reading a value?  Without the open/close connection element, it still work correctly. I am writing values in the server thru event stucture.I do not need any buffered reading or writing. What will happen if I didnt not use the open/close connection? Maybe it may cause some problems in my program which i didnt realise?
And I have attached an example of my program. Thanks

    Hi YehChia,
I was talking about something like that:
    1. Not good. since with every iteration the DS connection needs to be opened and closed.
    2. Good. Since you open the connection only once then do the reads and close it afterwords.

  • Can I send data from a PC to another PC using Data Socket Servers?

I need to send an array to a computer. Both computers use LabVIEW. The computer that writes the information also runs the Data Socket Server. What I want to do is read that array from another computer via internet. So the main issue is: Can I read from a Data Socket Server via internet?
I'm writting the array using the dstp where I'm supposed to type the URL.

  • Data socket problems with LVRT 8.2

I am in the process of migrating to LV 8.2 from LV7.1.1. My system has 18 RT targets which send data to a Host PC through data socket (DS). The Host PC runs LV on Windows XP Pro.  With LV7.1.1 on both host and RT targets DS works perfectly. The RT targets update the host every 500 ms.
I've taken a three-step process in the migration. First tests were done with the host migrated to LV8.2 while keeping the RTs at LV7.1.1. Result: the system worked perfect. Then I changed one RT to 8.2 keeping the rest the rest at LV7.1.1. Result: DS timed out before all the data could be sent to Host. Finally, all RTs were migrated to LVRT 8.2. Result: Only about 5 out of the 18 RTs report to the Host before DS times out. However, if only one RT target is used, i.e., the other 17 RTs are diasbled, communication is very fast. Is there a special setting that I need to make? Btw, the roughly 5 RTs that report vary randomly from test to test, i.e., there is no bias towards any particular RTs.
I am using the same source code developed under LV7.1.1, so the only changes made are the ones that take place when one opens LV7.1.1 code in LV8.2. Some VIs get converted in the process.
    Any ideas?

    Ben,
I must say I am very surprised by Nadim's email. His point, which I must say I don't agree with, was made quite clear to me yesterday during a conference call between my team and the NI team comprising Chris, Nadim, and Avinash. So I don't know what purpose this morning's email is supposed to serve. Be that as it may, I think NI has gotten it wrong here. I do not think it should be one or the other. The discussion forum is a much wider forum comprised of people with varying experiences - not just NI employees. That is precisely why I posted my problem to the forum: to tap into the vast experiences of the discussants. But when I did not get any responses after I had posted answers to Nadim's questions, I decided to make a formal service request to NI, all perfectly legal. So I was really surprised when I was being blamed for tying up NI resources on one problem. I believe the resource allocation issue should be NI's to solve, not mine. I have no way of knowing that NI had formally assigned somebody to my problem. What if nobody from NI responds, am I allowed to make a service request to NI? My feeling is that NI's logic is flawed here, assuming Nadim's views are NI's views.
    Thanks,

  • How can I read realtime data from a data socket using DIAdem

I am currently routing data from an instrument using LabView 7.1 to a data socket. I was trying to figure out how to access that data in real time in DIAdem through the data socket. Another option would be to use the downloaded LabView/DIAdem VI package, but I haven't figured out how to get that to work either, despite the forums here. I would prefer to access it through the data socket, if possible, as the amount of information being transferred is negligable (a string and a double).
    Thank you,
    Sinan Sutcu

You have to use one of the ScriptDAC blocks. In your case, as you would like to fetch data from a LabVIEW vi, choose the out of the driver input palette. Inside the configuration dialog you can generate a sample script, which is then copied to the windows clipboard. It contains a lot of function prototypes which will be automatically called later during the measurement.
Basically, the init functions are called during the start of the measurement - here you should connect to the activeX server, the deinit functions are called when stopping the measurement - disconnect from the server here.
Then there is the function SFD_Readchannel, which is called once for eych tact and each channel you configured. Here, you should exchange the data with your VI.
I am attatching an example I wrote to control a LabVIEW vi (doing a counter output operation)- that is why the data exchange works the other way around, but I hope it explains the principle.
Additionally I am adding documentation about the ScriptDAC driver interface.

  • Time Machine back up to transfer data to new Mac.

Hi - I am trying to transfer my old Mac data to my new Mac via Time Machine and an external hard drive.  When prompted to select a back up source, "Time Machine Backups" shows as an option. On the next screen, "No OS X system back ups were found" appears.  In the notes it says only complete back ups of Mac OS X appear on the list.  I'm transfering data from a Mac OS X Version 10.6.8.  How do I make sure it is complete?  I just backed it up again from my old Mac to make sure it was the most recent data.
    Thank you.

  • Data transfer from mac to pc using ipod

I need to transfer some data files from my MacBook to my PC using my 30GB ipod. I get all the files copied onto my ipod from my mac with no problems. I have my ipod set to be used in disk mode.
Once I plug it into my pc, it tells me that I need to format the drive. How can I successfully transfer data from my mac to my pc using my 30GB ipod?
Someone told me to go ahead and format the drive/ipod on my pc and then plug it into my mac, place the files in the ipod and then I should be able to access the files having the ipod plugged into my pc. I started to try this, but it messes up my ipod to where I need to reset my ipod to factory settings using, my macbook.
Would it be possible to reset my ipod to factory settings using itunes on my pc and then try plug the ipod into my macbook and copy the files over that way?
Please let me know what you have found out. I need to backup all my files and get them on to a second computer. I have 25GB worth of home videos that makes it so that I need to use my ipod, other wise another device would do the trick.

Yes. In fact, I'm pretty sure that's what you were supposed to do in the first place. The wonderful thing about OS X: It'll speak HFS+, FAT32, and it'll even understand NTFS (but it can't write to it... yet). Oddest thing: XBox 360 will read HFS+, but WinXP/Vista won't... curious, isn't it?

  • Is it possible to preserve creation/mod dates when transfering Mac-PC-Mac?

    Hi there
I tried researching the following problem on-line but couldn't find anything helpful so was hoping someone else might know something helpful.
Historically I have always used PCs so until last year I didn't own a Mac, although I use them at work. This means I have a huge amount of files and data stored on external hard drives. I now run Snow Leopard but also run Windows 7 in inside VirtualBox because not all software I own is available for the Mac.
The problem I have is that Snow Leopard and Windows handle file creation and modification dates differently. So if I save a file on my Mac HFS+ disk in Snow Lepoard, Windows cannot read the dates correctly.
I have MacFuse running in Snow Lepoard in order to access my NTFS+ disks but saving files on there still doesn't resolve the issue. Recently I created network drive shares to my NTFS disks in Windows 7 so I could access them. However when I copy files from my Digital Camera on to them, it changes the creation date whilst keeping the modification date unchanged. I use the creation dates to title my MPEG4 AVI videos so I cannot afford the dates to change. If those contained metadata, similar to EXIF data, it wouldn't be such a problem but they don't.
Does anyone know a way of safely transferring files or a program which converts files between Mac and PC. I know of MacDisk but would allow resolve the date issue or simply place files on a HFS+ disk with the windows creation date format. Thus rendering the dates wrong when used in the Mac. I just need a conversion tool between the two. I can't use FAT32 because I also work with digital video from time to time.
    Kind regards
    Infobleep

    So to understand your issue.
You have lots of old drives running with the NTFS file system.
Now that you have a MAC you want to keep using these drives in the same way.
The issue is that the MAC is writing the day you copied the content onto the hard drive in NTFS external drives as the creation date?
    Is this correct?
If so, I believe that you are trying to do a Windows thing in a MAC world....
I am using Parallels and VM ware. I cannot see any problem with VMware and the file creation dates in either MAC or XP. I have created new files in each, crossed over to the other operating system and modified the files. Both files are correctly displaying the content the way they need to be with the correct modified and created dates. The VMware and MAC OS use the mac file system as a base.
I would try to save the digital photos to the external drives while in windows. If you need to use the MAC when doing this I personally would copy off all the old PC files onto my mac and then reformat the external drive as a MAC file system drive. Then copy the files back to the external drive from the MAC. If you are using VMware this drive can be useable by windows as a "shared folder".
If you acknowledge the external USB drive as a USB device in WMware it will of course be in MAC file system format so the new formatted drive will only be viewable in the Computer Management application (WinXP ) And it will not show up as a drive.
To get around this I created a new shared folder in the VMware (Settings -> System Settings -> Sharing) and just simply chose the entire portable drive as a shared folder. Works like a charm. Now WinXP can use the VMware Tools app and properly translate the file content over the the MAC drive. I just created a few files and don't see any issue with the file creation dates.
MAC doesn't use NTFS for its file system and since NTFS is a windows technology, probably cannot? If anything the software that is allowing you to write to the NTFS drive is probably emulating something and that piece of software is at fault. I have an old NTFS drive and don't remember being able to write to it natively from the MAC OS.... In fact my new 1TB drive was purchased to allow me to transfer all my old data off the legacy drive so that I can update it to the new MAC world
Though even more then this... I personally never rely on something so fallible as a computer maintained "created on" or "modified on" concept as these are subjective. As of the new millennium file names have been basically unbound. I would instead append the date and time to my file name as follows.
    201007310300 Some Name of a File.jpg
this way no matter what is done with the file you still have the all important creation date.
An apple script should be able to be created to look at the creation dates on the files as they are stored on the mac and append the date to the file name. (basic shell scripting)
And if this doesn't work for you, perhaps the Linux file system is a better option? I believe that MAC will play nicer with Linux. And I know that there are software drivers to read a linux drive on a PC. Again, though, creation dates can easily change and are no guarantee as to when a file was really created.
So to conclude. All of my external drives are in MAC FS. If I need to copy files to a PC I can use my new 64GB flash drive. (I mean that is a HDD all in to itself!) If you are stuck in NTFS land, save the files via your Windows emulation.

  • Create OPC I/O server and front panel data socket problem

    Hi all!
I installed the NI OPC server. When I try to create a new server I/O in a LabVIEW project I don't see the "OPC client" possibility.
    Is something software missing?
Other question: I tryed to connect to OPC server using front panel data socket but my problem is same. When I click the numeric control and I go to the "data operation" menu there is no possibility to make data socket connection.
I don't know what is the problem.
I attached two pictures about my problem.
    Solved!

    Dear vajasgeri1,
do you have LabVIEW DSC module installed? Without it you will not have the OPC client funtionality.
And to configure DataSocket binding you need to go to the Data Binding tab in the Properties of a control.

  • Data socket port

I want to serve data sockets over the internet. I can get them to work over our local network (all the computers are 192.168.1.100, etc), but they're not working beyond our local network. Do I need to forward port requests on our router to enable this (we just have a simple DSL modem and a router)? In Labview, looked under Tools >> Options >> Vi Server Configuration and see Port 3363 listed. Is this the port that data sockets work on? If so, do I just need to configure the router to forward port 3363 requests to my computer that is running the data socket server?
    Alex

    Hi Alex,
It sounds like you have the right idea. Datasocket uses port 3015, so you should be able to forward requests to this port to a certain local IP address. The links below might be of some help to you:
