Data sources (ODBC) config -MS SQL Server linking

OS -WS2008 R2-64
I realize that the problems I'm experiencing are not one’s everyday’s activities and are falling quite astray of the regular Oracle dba work.
There is no other place to post but here as the MS SQL Server forums were not able to provide any solution so far.
I hope somebody could have experienced similar issues and could have solutions or at least to point to the right direction.
The box has a MS SQL Server 2008 that has to be linked with an Oracle 10g database on a different box(SunOS 5.10).
The source for the ODBC drivers supposed to be Oracle Client + ODAC.
The simple scenario of linking SQL Server to Oracle got developed into an ugly battle with Oracle drivers to be recognized by the SQL Server.
Numerous installations-de-installations of the Oracle Client 10g + ODAC and Oracle Client 11 + ODAC led to nowhere.
The major points of failures are:
1. The OracleMTS Recovery Service gets broken and can not start - the installation of ODAC fails.
Following the Metalink: Recreating Oracle MTS Recovery Service [ID 836137.1]
fails even with domain admin account - "access denied".
2. In case when the Oracle Client + ODAC get a successful installation:
-     no effort could make the oracle drivers to ne recognized by the SQL server.
Even with config of Data Sources (ODBC) and successful connection test against the Oracle databases -> there is no way to have the oracle OraOLEDB.Oracle listed in the SQL Server dropdown window with available drivers.
3. Data Sources (ODBC) - fail to initiate reporting bogus reasons.
As there are 32 and 64 bit of applications (ODBC Managers) and corresponding – or not – drivers------ there is a reportedly confusion over the forums which drivers are for which OS.
The bottom line is – linking fails (something I have done successfully before).
I have the feeling there is something wrong with our environments, but have no way to prove it.
I’m posting with a little hope for help.
Thx,

WS2008 is 64 bit
MS SQL Server 2008 is 64-bit
Solaris is 64-bit
Oracle is 64-bit
Oracle's OLE DB - as OraOLEDB.Oracle
or Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers (MSDASQL) .
The road block is that I can not configure a Data Sources (ODBC) - System DSN with any of OraOLEDB.Oracle or MSDASQL because they are not listed on the list of available drivers!!!!
Source for OraOLEDB.Oracle has to be the Client11g - ODAC installation. - at no avail
Source for MSDASQL should be the OS by itself as the driver is built in. - at no avail
(the SQL server recognizes the MSDASQ - listed under Linked servers providers).
As per the information from Microsoft and other forums - the mess is based upon 32 - 64 bit applications and drivers; on the way the installations were done.
Even the server administrator advises for a new installation.
Thx,

  • Vb 2010 data source configuration wizard and sql server 2012

I am having a problem using the Data Source Configuration Wizard in vb 2010 express to connect to a remote SQL server database. The weird thing is that I can connect to it just fine if I manually dimension the sqlcommand, sqlconnection and set up the sql
connectionstring. So I know the connectivity is possible, but I would like to use the functionality of the Data Source Configuration Wizard.
Here's what happens when I attempt to add a connection via the Database Explorer:
I only get two SQL Server options. Neither will let me connect to a remote database.
I know that Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 isn't what I want, but I have tried it anyway. It will only let me connect to a database on my computer. An 'ActiveSync' option is greyed out.
Microsoft SQL Server Database File would appear to be what I want, but when I select this option, it informs me (as you can see) that this will only work for a local database:
The connection string that I build manually (and which works) looks like this:
    Dim
    myConn
    As
    NewSqlConnection(sConnect)
    sConnect =
    ""Data Source=xxxxxx.xxxxxx.com;Server=""Xxxx XXX Database"";Initial Catalog=StockAnalysisProd;User
    ID=cadietz;Password = "& sPW &
I have attempted all variation of this string in the database file name input box to no avail. I think it really should go in as a Data Source but those are hard wired and cannot be changed. I'm sure I'm doing something stupid, but I need someone
to point out what it is. Thanks in advance for your help...
    Alex3764

    Alberto... thanks for your reply.
Unfortunately this does not appear to work. I downloaded Visual Studio Express for the Web (2012) and attempted the 'work around' proposed by Sergey and I could not make it work on the remote server. I have given up on the Data Connection Wizard and
am simply connecting to my remote SQL server using the manual classes (SqlConnection, SqlCommand, SqlDataAdapter, etc.). The moderator has marked this as an answer but I'm going to unmark it.
I am now even more frustrated because I now find that I cannot connect to my LOCAL SQL database using the Data Connection Wizard and the circumstances are even weirder. Here's what happens:
I open the Add Connection window, select 'Microsoft SQL Server Database File (SqlClient)' as the data source.
I then browse to my local database file in the Database file name input box. When I click the 'Test Connection' button I get a message box that informs me: 'Test connection
    succeeded'. Voila!
But, alas, when I close the message box and click OK on the Add Connection window I get this message: 'The ability to open this connection is not supported in this edition of Visual Studio'.
I mean this borders on the absurd. Why is the Data Connection Wizard even offered with VB 2010 Express if you can't use it for anything. Once again I can get around the problem manually but I'm getting very frustrated with MS. Any suggestions??

  • Data Pump .xlsx into a SQL Server Table and the whole 32-Bit, 64-Bit discussion

First of all...I have a headache!
Found LOTS of Google hits when trying to data pump a .xlsx File into a SQL Server Table. And the whole discussion of the Microsoft ACE 64-Bit Driver or the Microsoft Jet 32-Bit Driver.
    Specifically receiving this error...
An OLE DB record is available.  Source: "Microsoft Office Access Database Engine"  Hresult: 0x80004005  Description: "External table is not in the expected format.".
Error: 0xC020801C at Data Flow Task to Load Alere Coaching Enrolled, Excel Source [56]: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_CANNOTACQUIRECONNECTIONFROMCONNECTIONMANAGER.  The AcquireConnection method call to the connection manager "Excel Connection Manager"
    failed with error code 0xC0202009.
Strangely enough, if I simply data pump ONE .xlsx File into a SQL Server Table utilizing my SSIS Package, it seems to work fine. If instead I am trying to be pro-active and allowing for multiple .xlsx Files by using a Foreach Loop Container and a variable
@[User::FileName], it's erroring out...but not really because it is indeed storing the rows onto the SQL Server Table. I did check all my Delay
Why does this have to be sooooooo difficult???
Can anyone help me out here in trying to set-up a SSIS Package in a rather constrictive environment to pump a .xlsx File into a SQL Server Table? What in God's name am I doing wrong? Or is all this a misnomer? But if it's working how do I disable the error
so that is stops erroring out?

    Hi ITBobbyP,
According to your description, when you import data of .xlsx file to SQL Server database, you got the error message.
The error can be caused by the following reasons:
The excel file is locked by other processes. Please kindly resave this file and name it to other file name to see if the issue will be fixed.
The ACE(Access Database Engine) is not up to date as Vaibhav mentioned. Please download the latest ACE and install it from the link:
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=13255.
The version of OFFICE and server bitness is not the same. To solve the problem, please refer to the following document:

  • Data MIgration from Oracle to SQL Server 2005

    HI Gurus,
Kindly please advice me how to migrate Data from oracle to MS SQL Server or Vice Versa.
I came to know about 2 methods:
    1) Using SQL Developer
    2) USing ODBC.
KIndly let me know which method is better. I am in confusion about both option
    Kindly advice over the same
    Thanks

Usually such questions asked and answered on forums of a target system. In this case on MS SQL forums.
    But I will answer.
You should create a LINKED SERVER in MS SQL that connects to Oracle.
    Then issue couple of SELECT * INTO <TARGET_TABLE> FROM <ORACLE LINKED SERVER>..<SRC SCHEMA>.<SRC TABLE>.
Install Oracle Client and OLE DB driver on SQL Server machine.
Also, Oracle is case sensitive by default. MS SQL is case insensitive by default. If there are primary/unique keys that have mixed case values in Oracle, then in MS SQL you need to set case sensitive collation for them.
PS. If you need not only migrate data one time, but also to have a real time replication during an application transition period, you can take a look on heterogeneous replication solutions like Golden Gates or DataCurrents.

Can you please help in fixing this issue.I am not sure of the Drivers and the descrition that I am using are correct or not.
Please let me know the process of creating the DSN for SQL server in LINUX and also how can we check the available drivers in LINUX?
    Thank You in advance,

OBIEE does all of its data retrieval from the server. Your server needs to be able to query all of the data sources that you define.
The client is irrelevant here, it's just a web browser consuming data that the BI Server returns to it.
So yes you need to define connectivity from your Linux server to your SQL Server box.
The Systems Requirements doc (http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10415_01/doc/bi.1013/e10417.pdf) details DataDirect ODBC drivers that are provided for non-Widows connectivity to SQL Server

  • Data sync between oracle and sql server

    Greetings Everyone,
Your expert views are highly appreciable regarding the following.
We at work are evaluation different solutions to achieve data synchronization between oracle and sql server data bases. Data sync i mentioned here is for live applications. We are runnign oracle EBS 11i with custom applications and intending to implement a custom software based on .NET and SQL Server. Now the whole research is to see updates and data changes whenever happens between these systems.
I googled and found Oracle Golden Gate, Microsoft SSIS, Wisdom Force from Informatica....
If you can pour in more knowledge then it's great.
    Thank You.

Most of the work involved has to be done through scripts and there is no effective GUI to implement OGG.However using commands is not vey togh and they are very intutive.
These are the steps, from a high level:
1.Get the appropriate GG Software for your source and target OS.
2.Install GG on source and target systems.
3.Create Manager and extract processes on source system
4.Create Manager and replicat processes on target system
    5.Start these processes.
First try to achieve uni-directional replication. Then Bi-directional is easy.I have implemented bi-directional active active replication using Oracle DBs as source and target. Refer to Oracle installation and admin guides for more details.
Here is a good article that may be handy in your case.

  • What is the easiest way to export all tables data from Oracle to MS SQL Server?

    Hello MS,
I would like to export all tables from Oracle 11.2 to MS SQL Server 2012 R1.
Using the tool "Microsoft SQL Server Migration Assistant v6.0 for Oracle" did not work for me because there are too many warnings and errors regarding the schema creation (MS cannot know it because they are not the schema designer). My idea is
to leave/skip the schema creation to the application designer/supplier and instead concentrate on the Oracle data export and MS SQL data import.
What is the easiest way to export all tables data from Oracle to MS SQL Server quickly?
    Is it:
    - the „MS SQL Import and Export Data“ Tool
    - the “MS SQL Integration Services” Tool
    - not Oracle dump *.dmp format because it is a propritery binary format
    - flat file *.csv (delimited format)
    Thanks!

    Hi lingodingo,
If you want to directly export all tables from Oracle database to SQL Server, I suggest you use SQL Server Import and Export Wizard. Because you just need to follow the wizard with GUI, this is the easiest way.
If you want to make some modification for the tables‘ data before loading to SQL Server, I suggest you use SQL Server Integration Services package. For more details, please refer to the following similar thread:

  • Tg4msql - Blob Data Type Support(Oracle 8i - sql server 2000)

    hi,
We are trying to replicate the data from oracle 8i to sql server 2000 through tg4msql.if we want to replicate the data thet contains the blob field , we are getting invalid expression in the procedure marked with error line.
the procedure i am using is as follows
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE INSERT_SQL

    BEGIN
    FOR VAL_CURSOR IN
--Get the Data from the table with status 0
    SELECT rs_report_rowid FROM BIJU.rs_report where rs_report_status = 0

    Srini,
Support for LOB was added in v9.2. It is not supported in 8i.

  • Specifying Partner Failover in odbc.ini for Linux ODBC driver for SQL Server

    Hi,
We are trying to specify the partner failover when making connections via Linux ODBC driver for SQL Server. Do you know a way to specify partner failover in the DSN entry in odbc.ini?
We are using Linux ODBC driver for SQL Server and unixODBC DriverManager.
    Our DSN is:
    [MyDSN]
Driver=ODBC Driver 11 for SQL Server
    Description=MyDSN
    Server=MySERVER,<port>
I also tried to use the following connection string in Python (via pyodbc) bypassing the DSN and connecting using the server name.
    cnxn = pyodbc.connect("Server=server1,<port>;UID=sa;PWD=<pwd>;Driver=ODBC Driver 11 for SQL Server;Failover_Partner=Server2,<port2>;Database=MyDB")
If the standby DB is on server1 connection fails. It doesn't try server2. If the DB is principal on server1 connection succeeds.
    Thank you,
     Liviu
    LLL

    Hello,
Did you use ODBC Driver for SQL Server to connect to database that uses database mirroring?
    According to
the BOL,it does not list "Failover_Partner" as ODBC Driver for Linux connection string keywords.
But ODBC driver for Linux supports
AlwaysOn Availability Groups or Failover Cluster Instance by specify MultiSubnetFailover=True when connecting to a SQL Server 2012 availability group listener or SQL Server 2012 Failover Cluster Instance.
The following case is about similar issue and it seems that ODBC Driver on Linux does not recognize Failover_Partner in connection string. (Not test myself). You can refer to:

  • Put some data form the databse of SQL Server into SAP and auto general PR?

    Dear all,
Can you tell me how I can put some data from the databse of SQL Server into SAP and auto general PR?
    Best regards,
    Merryzhang
Edited by: merry zhang on Feb 4, 2009 9:10 AM

    Hi Zhang,
If i have understood your question properly, I guess you wanted to create Purchase Requistion automatically right?
Then you have lots of option simpilest one would be create a couple of Z table with all the fields that you require for header and Item.
create a Program and use BAPI function module to create the PR by reading the values from those Z tables. after creation delete the contents from the table. Schedule this program in Background periodically like everyday or weekly once however you would like it to be. So once the table has contents in it and when the program runs it will create the PR's (Purchase Requisition).
You can also use a workflow with the Z table. Once the Z table is filled you can trigger a workflow based on the Table change. I'm not sure like how to do it but I nkow that this process can also be used.
Hope this might have thrown some light upon.
    Thanks,
    Prashanth

  • Cannot get ODBC Data Source to connect on report server

    Hi,
I have an ODBC Connection installed on our PROD server that when you test through I-SQL and the ODBC Administrator it works.
When I add a new data source to the reporting server we interface and press test connection it just hangs for ages then gives a page cannot be displayed.
I have installed all the same on the DEV server and it works fine.  I have set all of the configs to exactly the same!
I feel like something to do with reporting services is not correct.  Any one have any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Hi KMoff,
Per my understanding that you are using the ODBC datasource type and when you have set the connection string and click the "Test Connection" it hangs and got some error, right?
Please find the details steps below and try to provide more information according to the questions:
Whether the error message you got is "page cannot be displayed", if not, please try to provide more details inforamtion.
Did you got the error message when you click on the "Test Connection" from designer or report manager.
If you got the issue only in the report manager, the issue can be caused by the support of the ODBC driver in the report manager and also the bit.
Standard .NET Framework data providers do not necessarily support all the functionality supplied by Reporting Services data processing extensions. In addition, some OLE DB data providers and ODBC drivers can be used to author and preview reports, but are not
designed to support reports published on a report server. See
Data Sources Supported by Reporting Services (SSRS)
When you deploy a report to a 64-bit report server (x86), the report server must have natively compiled 64-bit data providers installed. Wrapping a 32-bit data provider in 64-bit interfaces is not supported.
Could you provide more details information about the connection string you are currently using.(Excel files or something else)

  • Insert data into oracle based on sql server data(here sql server acting as source to oracle and destination to oracle)

Source is Oralce. Destination is SQL Server.
Requirement - I have to fetch sql server server data (empid's) based emp table  and send this as input data to oracle to fetch and empid's are common.
I cannot use merge or loopkup or for each as oracle have too many records.
For example - In MS SQL - i have empid=1,2..Only these records, I have to fetch from oracle source into sql server destination. For this, I have adopted the below approaches...The major problem I face, when i build a empid's as a string, it is taking only
4000 chars. My string lenght is 10000. How do I breakup this string lengh and send to data flow task till all broken strings length passed to DFT.
    Approach-1
created two variables - oraquery string, empid string
    step1 - ms sql database - created sql task - declare @empid varchar(max)
    SELECT @empid=
    Stuff((SELECT ',' + empid
            FROM
(SELECT  DISTINCT  convert(varchar(10),empid ) empid FROM emp
             ) x
            For XML PATH ('')),1,1,'')
    select @empid =    '(' +  @empid + ')'
    select @empid
    resultset=singlerow
resultset=resultname=0; variablename=User::empid (empid is declared as string)
step2 - oracle database - created data flow task
    created oledb source
I put  this statemnt in oraquery expression - "select * from dept where dept in  "
    +  @[User::empid] + "
    expression=true
[OLE DB Source [1]] Error: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_OLEDBERROR.  An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80040E14.
An OLE DB record is available.  Source: "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle"  Hresult: 0x80040E14  Description: "ORA-00936: missing expression".
    Approach-2
created three variables - oraquery string, empid  int, loop object--when I put int then it is automatically setting to 0
step1 - ms sql database - created sql task - SELECT  DISTINCT  convert(varchar(10),empid ) empid FROM emp
    resultset=fullresult
    resultset=resultname=0; variablename=User::loop
step2 - created a for each loop container
for loop editor - for each ado ennumerator
    enumerator configuration - loop
    variablemapping - variable=empid;index=0
step3 - oracle database - created data flow task (outside for each loop. If I put inside it is taking long time)
    created oledb source
I put  this statemnt in oraquery expression - "select * from dept where dept in  "
    +  @[User::empid] + "
    expression=true
Data inserting in a destination table but  empid=0.

Sorry didnt understand if your step3 is outside loop how
@[User::empid] will get values for the empids from User::loop. The iteration happens inside loop so you
need to have a logic to form the delimited list inside using a script task or something and concatenating everything and storing to variable @[User::empid]
. Then only it will have full value used to be used in step3 query

I am trying to use the SSIS Import and Export Wizard in SQL Server Data Tools to migrate an Informix database to SQL Server 2012.  I go through the steps & when I hit Finish I get an error message that says:

    Could not connect source component.
    Error 0xc0047062: Source - material [1]: System.Data.Odbc.OdbcException (0x80131937): ERROR [42000] [Informix][Informix ODBC Driver][Informix]A syntax error has occurred.

I am getting this error when I use the "Copy data from one or more tables or views" option.  I am able to migrate a single table with no problem when I use the "Write a query to specify the data to transfer"
option.  This is my first time using SSIS so I am not sure what to do.  Can anyone help me out?  Thanks...

The following link explains the steps/processes requires to perform this in SSIS:
