Data Warehouse Deployment

I would like to know if you folks have any statistics regarding what types of platforms your customers are deploying
data warehouse solutions on ( Unix, Linux, Windows). I am really interested in what percentage of customers deploy on
each type of platform. Also, if you have any guidelines to use to help you select the appropriate platform, i.e. size of
databases, number of users, etc, that would be very helpful. Thanks.

You could start with:
- Oracle 11g documentation: http://www.oracle.com/pls/db111/portal.portal_db?selected=6&frame=
- Oracle OWB 11g tutorials: http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/11gr1_owb/index.htm
In the documentation you can find the requirements.

  • Export and Import in Data warehouse

    Hi,
    I have built a data warehouse project with few dimensions and a cube on a server machine, say server1. Now i have another server machine on which i want to develop this project for bulk production.
    I want to import all the developments from server1 to new server machine, say server2, To save my time. I exported data from server1 using export functionality and imported the same file to server2 using import function. My questions is.......
    Is it possible to use all the imported objects like cube, dimension, mappings, tables and sequences in the same way in server2 as i was using in server1. If yes then what are the necessary configurations, i have to made.???? because imported dimensions are not able to deploy in new server2 machine giving different errors especially invalid location and invalid table errors for mapping and dimensions.
    thanks in advance
    imran

    you can sue the MDL file on your new server but you have to do the following:
    1. Register locations.
    2. Configure the mapping to use the new locations registered.
    4. Configure Control Center locations.
    Register the location in Control center
    Deploy the mappings/Process flows
    The Invalid location error is occuring becaue the location is not configured and registered in your connection explorer.

    Hello, I get this alert can someone help me out ?
    I did check the Proxy and is configured on all the MS and DW server.
    Alert Description
    Data Warehouse failed to request a list of management packs which contain
    reports deployed to SQL Reporting Services Server. Report deployment process

    Every call to the SRS generates a call to the OpsMgr SDK on Root Management
    Server to check permissions (security integration). It apepars the account
    the call is made under does not have access.
    To figure out which account is used follow this process:
    1) Run console and click on "Run As Profiles" in the Administration space;
    2) Double-click "Data Warehouse Report Deployment Account";
    3) Click on "Run As Accounts" tab;
    4) If you have a line in the accounts which lists your Root Management
    Server in the "Target Computer" column, note the account name in the "Run As
    Account" column. If you do not have such a line, follow steps 2-4 for the
    "Default Action Account" profile and note the account name;
    5) Click on "Run-As Accounts" in the Administration space and double click
    the account name which you got on step 4)
    6) Switch to the "Account" tab and note domain name and user name;
    Once you found the account (say, DOMAIN\user) check that it is a member of
    the User Role "Operations manager Report Security Administrators". If not -
    add it and the process will recover automatically.

  • Computer IP address in data warehouse?

    Hi,
    In the Service Manager 2012 data warehouse, I'm trying to locate the table and fields for a computer's IP and MAC address as seen in the Service Manager console, under Configuration Items => Computer => Hardware => Network Adapters.
    In the DW, I can find the computer and its related network adapter(s), but not table storing the MAC and IP address(es). In which DW table can I find them? Are they copied to the data warehouse by default, or do I need to do some hokey pokey to get it working?
    Sebastian

    Hello Sebastian,
    Did you find out why the IPaddresses and the macaddresses are not in the networkadapters view,
    i'm having the same problem, and have no idea why the data is not filled in...
    The entries in computer and deployed computer should be filled in
    by the scom connector apparently
    thanks,
    Dennis

  • How do I design this in data warehouse?

    I am working on building a data warehouse for insurance quote data.
    Each quote will have an applicant and can have an optional co-applicant. Each applicant and co-applicant will have prior auto insurance history, prior home insurance history, current auto insurance information and current home insurance information.
    So do I create Applicant and Insurance dimensions here?

    Hi Ashan,
    Just so you know.
    I completely reworked our methodology of building data warehouses back in 2012. The new way of building data warehouses is quite different to the old way.  The way you listed.
    The methodology presentation is on this link.

  • Oracle BI (Siebel Analytics) / Data Warehouse Data Security

    Hello,
    We are implementing Oracle Siebel Analytics and Custom datawarehousing using Oracle 9i DB. I am interested to know if we can implement consistent data security model for different data marts. Means with one single data warehouse, I want to implement data security model or policies in one place and they are applied consistently across all of the datamarts.
    1. Can we or oracle support this kind of secinerio.
    2. If yes, what would be perfect model an example will be helpful, and if not what best approach is available to resolve this security model.
    Any suggestion or help would be great.

    Hi, Do you also get some other packages names that the error msg reports like ...
    RPE-01012 Cannot deploy PL/SQL maps to the target schema because it is not owned by the Control Center and "SOME WRT.... package names" I think once did I face this and made sure that the repository user has some packages granted through OWBREPOS_OWNER/OWB_REPOS_OWNER to the user you are using to run the mapping.

  • Architectural Design - New Data Warehouse

    Hello All,
    This is my first post to the oracle discussion forums and I'm looking forward to the interactions with other ODWB users.
    I am just begining to implement a design for a new data warehouse, our team has already defined user requirements for a subset of the business (Sales/Marketing) and have committted a logical model to paper. We have installed our dev environment and are now ready to begin the work of creating our prototype.
    I've read all the Oracle doc I can get my hands on regarding implementing your DW objects and have been pondering the approach. ROLAP or MOLAP.....
    it seems to make sense that we should deploy into a ROLAP environment bringing in all our data from our staging area to create a stable relational data store. Then select most used or queried dimensions and facts to deploy in a MOLAP environment... has anyone used this approach? any lessons learned? do you have to choose one method or the other? or can you take a blended approach ? would you deploy both in the same database instance or seperate the two?
    thx

    I'm somewhat new to OWB coming from an Informatica background but in our environment, we are doing the same thing. Our Enterprise Data Warehouse will be based on ROLAP and I intend to use MOLAP for subsets of the EDW.
    Dimensions in Oracle are somewhat interesting in that they are "leveled" and you can tie cubes or "fact tables" to any level of the dimension. This is a bit un-Kimball-like and has taken some getting used to. I think it is a powerful feature but I will have to experiment some until I understand it better.
    One critical bug with 10.2 I've run into is with dimension roles - The time dimension for instance. Typically this is one table that is aliased many many times. If you exceed roughly 5 roles for the time dimension, the generation of the object fails since OWB generates a single anonymous PL/SQL block that exceeds 64k. Its a documented bug in development with no workaround according to metalink.
    Other gotchas are that table changes always try to generate "create table" scripts even if you only add an index or change parallelism. We have had to do table maintenance outside OWB and then keep the metadata in sync up until now.
    I haven't done any of the MOLAP yet but from what I read there are some restrictions - such as you can't have roles on dimensions for MOLAP and I believe you can't have SCDs in MOLAP. I don't know how Time dimensions are handled in MOLAP without roles! Do people really generate tables for every single time dimension in OWB???
    Hope you share your experiences here!

    Was there any resent permission change on the SQL server or the Data warehouse ?
    Has your Data reader and writer account Sys admin permissions on the SQL application ?
    Also is the reporting tab working and are the reports related to this and other management packs working ?

  • Data warehouse database

    <p>
    Today I came across one very interesting question
    </p>
    <p>
    "Data Warehouse can be only deployed in relation database."
    </p>
    <p>
    Above statement is true or false.
    </p>
    <p>
    If we see it simply without any complication or may be go back 7-8 years it's answer may be false as I find out after doing research on it
    </p>
    <p>
    "A data warehouse can be normalized or denormalized. It can be a relational database, multidimensional database, flat file, hierarchical database, object database, etc. Data warehouse data often gets changed. And data warehouses often focus on a specific activity or entity." Larry Greenfield
    </p>
    <p>
    The data warehouse is normally (but does not have to be) a relational database. It must be organized to hold information in a structure that best supports not only query and reporting, but also advanced analysis techniques, like data mining. Most data warehouses hold information for at least 1 year and sometimes can reach half century, depending on the business/operations data retention requirement. As a result these databases can become very large.en.wikipedia.org
    </p>
    <p>
    But I think when we look into the complication of designing and functionality which we are expecting from a data warehouse today and plus the concept which use when designing the data warehouse structure like star scheme, snow flake etc., I think it cannot be done in any other type of database which don't follow the relation database concept. We may call it multidimensional database or ORDBMS and we may talk about cubes, measures, dimension and so on but from the base it has to follows the relation database.
    </p>
    <p>
    Let me know if anybody has anything to say about it.
    </p>

    Thanks Justin!
    <br><br>
    I agree with you the concept exist before the relational database was invented. Last time I know they call it EIS then they name it MIS and now data warehouse. But what I am taking about is modern data warehouse technique, If you really think that any other type of database can support it without following relational database concept. Let me know which one?
    <br><br>
    I am still searching for my answers and have discuss with lot of people, but when I asked them have they seen any implementation of data warehouse without using relational database, the answer that I get is always negative.<br><br>

  • Designer Vs. Oracle Data warehouse builder

    Dear all,
    Currently I'm responsible of building a Data warehousing project using Oracle database. I'm trying to decide on a tool for modelling my datawarehouse. I have two options:
    1) Designer: we have some experience with this tool and we are using it for our main OLTP application.
    2) Oracle Data Warehouse builder: we are using this to design our ETL processes.
    I want to get some advice on whether the OWB is capable of modelling my datawarehouse and of doing a retrofit action. also, I try to standardize on the tools that are using in the Data Warehouse department (currently we are using only OWB).
    I will appreciate for any other advice to help in my selection process.
    Best Regards,
    Bilal

    Hi,
    In my experience this choice depends on the implementation of the datawarehouse. If you are building a "pure" Kimball style dimensional data warehouse you should be able to do this using OWB. I have architected such a DW in the past using only OWB, so I am speaking from experience.
    If on the other hand you are planning to implement an Inmon style CIF, if your requirements includes an operational data store (ODS), or if you for any other reason anticipate that you are going to be doing a lot of ER modeling, then I would not recommend using the current release of OWB for modelling. (Note however that there are significant improvements to the modelling capabilities in the Paris release of OWB, so this may change in the future)
    The advantage of improved maintainability when using a single tools needs to be weighted against the improved functionality if you choose a combination of the two. In the "two tool" scenario strict development and deployment routines need to be enforced to avoid that the model in Designer comes out of sync with the metadata in OWB. (Consider the effect of a developer making a change to a table definition in OWB and deploying it directly to the database without updating the model in Designer.)
    Hope this helps.
    Regards,
    Roald

    We're running 2012 sp1 on SQL 2008R2.
    - Get on the floor, do that dinosaur

    Do you have MPs that have failed deployments? If yes, right click on them and click on "Restart Deployment". You kind of have to figure out the sequence if there are dependencies. If the deployment fails, post the error message from the event log
    (Operations Manager log source)
    If you recently upgraded to 2012 R2, you may want to execute the script from the release notes (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn299381.aspx)

  • SQL Server Parallel Data Warehouse Appliance - Cross-domain Watcher node

    Hi,
    Is it supported to have the PDW appliance in one domain and the watcher node in a different domain?
    If so, is a domain trust required or can certificates be used?
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the response Mai, but it does not answer my question.
    I had already read the MP guide for System Center Monitoring Pack for SQL Server 2012 Parallel Data Warehouse Appliance before asking the question.
    The guide identifies that all monitoring of the SQL PDW appliance is performed from a dedicated server that acts as a "watcher node". What the guide does not indicate is whether the watcher node must be in the same domain as the SCOM management
    servers or if it can be located across an untrusted boundary.
    In my case, the untrusted domain that requires monitoring includes the PDW appliance which has already been deployed and I plan to leverage a new SCOM gateway to simply the configuration, minimize the number of required certificates, firewall exceptions,
    etc as other servers also require monitoring.
    I want to locate the watcher node within the untrusted boundary and need to determine if this is a Microsoft-supported configuration or not.
    Is there a more appropriate forum for this question, please?
    Much thanks!

  • Exchange 2010 Management Pack Data Warehouse Synchronization Fails

    Hi Everyone!
    Has anyone had success with importing the Exchange 2010 management pack into Service Manager 2012?
    When we try to import it, it fails.
    Upon further investigation, the 'System Center Core Monitoring' management pack (which is not included with Service Manager 2012) is a dependency of the Exchange 2010 management pack but
    after we import it from the OpsMgr 2012 media, we still get the following warning when we import the  Exchange 2010 management into Service Manager 2012...
    "The management pack was imported successfully.
    Warnings (1):
    Override verification failed, cannot find Management Pack Element : : Cannot find ManagementPackElement [Type=ManagementPackRule, ID=Microsoft.SystemCenter.Agent.MonitoringHost.PrivateBytesThreshold] in management pack ManagementPack:[Name=Microsoft.SystemCenter.2007,
    KeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35, Version=6.0.6246.0]."
    ...and, the Exchange 2010 management pack status in the Service Manager 2012 Data Warehouse 'Management Pack' view indicates 'failed' after the MPSyncJob completes.
    We have a few 'Business Services' which depend on the Exchange 2010 management pack that we are trying to synchronize from OpsMgr 2012 and we are stuck until we can get the Exchange 2010 management
    successfully imported into Service Manager 2012 and have it show a status of 'Completed'  the Service Manager 2012 Data Warehouse 'Management Pack' view.
    Nothing useful in the
     Service Manager 2012 Data Warehouse and Management servers events logs that we could see.
    Any help or guidance would be GREATLY appreciated!
    Regards,
    JJ

    Update: I Just tested with CU2 installed for SrvMgr 2012 and OpsMgr 2012 and version 14.3.38.2 of the Exchange 2010 management, but the management pack still fails to deploy to the SrvMgr 2012 data warehouse (the management pack status shows
    up as 'failed' and the MPSyncJob shows the management pack as 'pending association').  The only clue I have for this problem is the folllowing warning which occurs when I import the management pack into SrvMgr 2012...
    I also get the following 33519 Event ID warning in the Operations Manager event log on the data warehouse server...
    ~~~~~
    Management pack association ignored. This does not require any action. If you continue to frequently see this warning, contact your administrator. This process will continue to retry.
    Has anyone had success with getting the Exchange 2010 management pack imported and successfully deployed to the SrvMgr 2012 data warehouse?
    The good news is that even though the Exchange 2010 management pack has a status of failed, the distributed applications in OpsMgr 2012 that depend on the Exchange management pack now show up under Configuration Items/Business Services including
    all related service component objects which was what I was trying to accomplish in the first place, so for now I'll just leave the Exchange 2010 management pack in the data warehouse with a failed status.
  • Best practice of metadata table in data warehouse environment ?
    Hi guru's,
    In datawarehouse, we have 1. Stage schema 2. DWH(Data warehouse reporting schema). In stageing we have about 300 source tables. In DWH schema, we are creating the tables which are only required from reporting prespective . some of the tables in stageing schema, have been created in DWH schema as well with different table name and column names. The naming convention for these same tables and columns in DWH schema is more based on business names.
    In order to keep track of these tables we are creating metadata table in DWH schema say for example
    Stage                DWH_schema
    Table_1             Table_A
    Table_2             Table_b
    Table_3             Table_c
    Table_4              Table_DMy question is how do we handle the column names in each of these tables. The stage_1, stage_2 and stage_3 column names have been renamed in DWH_schema which are part of Table_A, Table_B, Table_c.
    As said earlier, we have about 300 tables in stage and may be around 200 tables in DWH schema. Lot of the column names have been renamed in DWH schema from stage tables. In some of the tables we have 200 column's
    so my concern is how do we handle the column names in metadata table ? Do we need to keep only table names in metadata table not column names ?
    Any idea will be greatly appriciated.
    Thanks!
    hi
    seems quite a buzzing question.
    In our project we designed a hub and spoke like architecture.
    Thus we have 3 layer, L0 is the one closest to the source and L0 table's name are linked to the corresponding sources names by mean of naming standard (like tabA EXT_tabA tabA_OK1 so on based on implementation of load procedures).
    At L1 we have the ODS , normalized model , we use business names for table there and standard names for temporary structures and artifacts
    Both L0 an L1 keep source's column names as general rule, new columns like calculated one are business driven and metadata are standard driven.
    Datamodeler fits perfect for modelling L1 purpose.
    L2 is the dimensional schema business names take place for tables and columns eventually rewritten at presentation layer ( front end tool )
    hope this helps D.
