Database access specific bug
Using database access components in Labview 8.2 to access a MS access database.
If a column is called "Language" it cant be read or used.
Any attempt to read the column, or data within the column using sql or any other method will fail.
If the column is renamed, it will work.
Why is it so,.
Why is the column name "Language" specifically singled out to not work in Labview database access vis.
'Language' is a reserved word in SQL. The Access help lists these words and using any of them will cause the same problem.

Hi!
I'm a bit confused with regards to where the database access code should be put in a MVC architecture. From reading various articles and posts on this forum, there seem to be a lot of different opinions.
Some seem to put the database access code in the controller servlet(or JSP), while some seem to use helper classes from the JavaBeans, while a few people even seem to access the database directly from the JavaBean.
My questions is: What is the best place to put the database stuff in a MVC architecture? An explanation as to why a particular solution is the best would be great..

VidarLet's say I have a class called Department that contains methods like getName(), getId(), setName(), etc... The Department class is my business object. To save and load Departments from a database, I have a class called DepartmentManager. The DepartmentManager saves and loads the departments to the database, and has methods like saveDepartment(), saveDepartments(), loadDepartment(), getDepartments(), etc... In some cases, my manager classes also caches the results so they don't have to load from the database each time. Often times, the manager class is a singleton. My Department class has no idea how it is persisted, or that it is part of a cache. It just knows about itself. The DepartmentManager is resonsible for managing all the persistance and lookup functionality for Departments.
Therefore, if I have a JSP page that needs to display Departments, my code might look like:

I am using oracle 11g client library on Linux 64bit machine and trying to connect to oracle database using jdbc thin driver.
The url format what I am trying to use is:
jdbc:oracle:thin:@IP address:port:service_name
When service_name = orcl : I am able to connect with the above syntax.
But when the service_name is having . e.g service_name = orcl.177.39.45, with the above format I get the above error.
If I change the URL syntax to following, it works
jdbc:oracle:thin:@IP address:port/service_name
But both seems to be valid syntax.
So I would like to undestand the reason behind the same.
When service_name is having ".", why ":" does not work and "/" works and when the service_name is without " ." , 1st format works.
Is there any specific reason behind same?

With this I was able to access the main page and was not getting database access.
But when I tried to perform some operations say list the submitted jobs, our application internally contacts Oracle database and gets the information stored in the database.
its not able to get and it throws exception.
So is there any reason behind this?

How to audit database access by IP address?
Hello,
In SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise is there a built-in mechanism to be able to audit and log the SQL loginname along with their IP addresses when they access a particular database? Most of the logins only have the role for db_datareader so I need to audit basically
everyone that is connecting to the database and whether they are running select statements or not.

Using ops$ accounts with Database Access Descriptors
Hi, I have installed and configured the Photo Album demo under 9i on Windows 2000 with no problems. I wish to use the operating system via oracle ops$ accounts to provide access to the Db through the Database Access Descriptor using the Gateway Database Access Descriptor Configuration tool. While the ops$ accounts I have configured work as expected under sqlplus, i.e. I am able to login to the Db without manually supplying a username and password e.g. sqlplus / , there does not seem to be a way of configuring the DAD to accept ops$ accounts for access to the photo album demo. Please can anyone confirm this to be the case and/ or provide an alternative solution. Kind regards.
I am pretty sure if you specify a DB username and password in dads.conf, you will not need to log in. Also, there is a tool to encrypt the password so it is not in clear text in the config file.
From the dads.README For 10:
- One or more mod_plsql specific directives. For example:
PlsqlDatabaseUsername scott
PlsqlDatabasePassword tiger
PlsqlDatabaseConnectString orcl
PlsqlAuthenticationMode Basic
I am on 10 now, so I don't personally know if it the same on 9. I don't use the DADs tool either, but you should be able to set a username/password for the dad so that there is not a need to login.
It would be best to ask in the HTMLDB forum, they would know better.

DATABASE AUDIT SPECIFICATION ON SPECIFIC USERS
Hi All,
Currently I am using SQL server 2012 and would like to implement database audit specification on specific users in my database. These are the users in my database name Payroll :-
Payroll\Andy.Bred - db_owner
Payroll\Arpit.Shah - db_owner
Payroll\webapp - db_datareader, db_datawriter, EXECUTE
web_payroll - db_datareader, db_datawriter, EXECUTE
In my database audit specification settings, I would like to capture any SELECT,UPDATE,DELETE and EXECUTE command for users Payroll\Andy.Bred & Payroll\Arpit.Shah only since they owned db_owner access. However, I am unable to capture any single command
from both users. I do not want to put 'Principal' as public since I just want to capture both users activity.
Is it I miss out anything? Is it because of windows login account? Hope can get some advise here. Highly appreciated.

Are your Windows login accounts member of the SQL Server sysadmin role? If that is the case, the login accounts are indirectly mapped as database user dbo. Please change the principal name in the audit action name to dbo and check if the users activity is
being audited.

Can we have multiple database audit specification on a single server audit ?
Hi,
We are having a 2 node Sql Clustered instance of SqlServer 2008 R2 Enterprise running
on windows server 2008 R2. We have about 88 databases in the instance.
Our servers run on Intel Xeon(R) CPU X5670 @2.94 GHz with 6 cores(12 logical processor).
The servers are having 12GB of RAM.
We are planning to introduce database level audit to find if there is any activity on
some of our databases. These databases are not growing in size and there is a request
from the application team to ascertain whether the endusers are accessing the database
over a period of time. In this context I have 2 queries-:
1)Can we have multiple database audit specification on a single server audit ie can we
audit multiple databases to find out the user activity on those databases at a time? Or
should we a separate server audit for each database audit specification?
2)We plan to have the target of the audit on a file on the same shared volume(lun) where
the MDF file and LDF files are located(in EMC storage) and in this context what performance
monitor counters should we watch to ascertain whether there is any performance degradation
due to introduction of server audit.

Database Audit Specification
The Database Audit Specification object also belongs to a SQL Server audit. You can create one database audit specification per SQL Server database per audit.
The database audit specification collects database-level audit actions raised by the Extended Events feature. You can add either audit action groups or audit events to a database audit specification. Audit events are
the atomic actions that can be audited by the SQL Server engine. Audit action groups are predefined groups of actions. Both are at the SQL Server database scope. These actions are sent to the audit, which records
them in the target. Do not include server-scoped objects, such as the system views, in a user database audit specification.
Database-level audit action groups and audit actions are described in the topic SQL Server Audit Action Groups and Actions.
You can also consider using a Profiler trace file to capture the events.

I've created a database audit in SQL2008R2 and now can't seem to disable/delete it. I assumed it would be a case of
disable database audit
delete database audit
disable server audit
delete server audit
However I cannot even do steps 1 and 2. I scripted deletion of the database audit but when I run it from a query window it just runs and runs.

a couple of databases for DELETE/INSERT before this time.
Any ideas?

Audit Specification.
Perhaps try switching the database to RESTRICTED_USER in order to perform the audit deletion/disable and then

Hi All, I downloaded the dreamweaver 8.0 trial version. I was
trying to see how database access works. I followed several
tutorials on the adobe website, but I am not able to view any live
data. When I open any page with data access defined it doesnt do
anything, I just occasionally see a file download diagram and
nothing happens after that. I am not sure that with the trail
version you can actually have data access. Does anyone have any
suggestions??

access is
not recognized, so you may not have the server enabled for
aspx files.
I'm sure that there are others here who can address that.
If you want to use an OLE DB Connection for your database
connection:
If you've got your MS SQL database set up using the
Enterprise Manager,
the next thing to do is to go into the ODBC Data Source
Administrator on
your system and add your datasource to the System Datasources
list in
the System DSN tab. I found a rather old tutorial at:

but it should provide you with the information you need to
set up your
system DSN so you database will be properly exposed to
Dreamweaver.
Once you've done that, in Dreamweaver make sure your site is
properly
defined for your testing server in the Testing Server

Site Definition dialog. Also define the location of the
server as a
subdirectory of your C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\ directory.
If the Testing Server is properly setup, open an aspx page
and then
bring up the Databases panel. There click on the Add (+)
button and set
up a datbase connection. Choose OLE DB Connection and in the
dialog
that comes up, click on the Build... button (that's the
easiest way to
work with it). Select your machine name from the "Select or
enter a
server name" list/menu. In Enter information to log on to the
server,
enter your login for your SQL Server database User by
clicking Use a
specific user name and password radio button and entering
your SQL
Server user name and password. Select the database from the
next
list/menu and click Test Connection. If it works, click OK
the
Connection String should be populated with the proper
information in the
OLE DB Connection dialog. Click Test to see if your
connection is
still working, then click OK. You should now be able to add a
dataset
and then create a dynamic table to display the results of the
dataset.

I've just completed with the installation of OIM 9101 and upgradation of 9101 to 9102. I'm facing a bit wierd. When I try to create a GTC for the Database Access Tables, I'm not able to see Database Access Tables option, in the drop down list for the Transport Provider.
I'm a bit confused if I've wrongly upgraded the system or if at all i've missed out some step. Though OIM seems to be ok and working fine.
Any suggestions as to how to solve this ?

This Error seems to occur because I was trying to attach certain pre-prop adapters within the default process form that is created while installing the connector. Roaming around the threads here, I came to know that this might be the problem as pre-props don't work fine when applied to the GTC's default form.
To overcome this problem, I've thought of a solution wherein I should create a new Custom Process Form and then apply my pre-props. But for this approach, I'm stuck into the middle. How can I apply a new Custom Form to an existing Provisioning Process ? Is this fesiable ? If yes, where should the changes be made ?
I tried changing the Table Name inside the GTC's provisioning process so that GTC can pick up the my new process form instead of its default process form, but that again gives an error saying :

I'm still struggling with the same cube and this is my 3rd post and once i fix some thing the other breaks. Please forgive me. When i process my cube i'm getting the error:
Errors in the back-end database access module. OLE DB was unable to convert a value to the data type requested for column 5.
My question is when the error says column 5 (is it the column 5 in the DSV?) or is it the column 5 in the DIMENSION list?
My next question is the DSV Query works perfectly fine , so why this error in cube? This is what i have in the query in DSV.
Please need help. In the below query both the column 5 (ArEASSIGNED TO VENDOR) in the CUBE and underlying table have the same data type and length VARCHAR(4000). Why is the process failing still?

I see now that your subject line talks about column 6, but you say column 5 in body of your original post.
I don't know anything about cubes, but apparently there is some mapping problem when you run it from SSAS. (I assume it is SSAS, a part of the product I'm entirely ignorant of.) I figured that if you had got tripped by the zero-based numbering, you
might be staring on the wrong column.

I'm still struggling with the same cube and this is my 3rd post and once i fix some thing the other breaks. Please forgive me. When i process my cube i'm getting the error:
Errors in the back-end database access module. OLE DB was unable to convert a value to the data type requested for column 5.
My question is when the error says column 5 (is it the column 5 in the DSV?) or is it the column 5 in the DIMENSION list?
My next question is the DSV Query works perfectly fine , so why this error in cube? This is what i have in the query in DSV.

I see now that your subject line talks about column 6, but you say column 5 in body of your original post.
I don't know anything about cubes, but apparently there is some mapping problem when you run it from SSAS. (I assume it is SSAS, a part of the product I'm entirely ignorant of.) I figured that if you had got tripped by the zero-based numbering, you
might be staring on the wrong column.

Optimizing the load of the database
Using table buffering
Using buffered tables improves the performance considerably. Note that in some cases a statement can not be used with a buffered table, so when using these statements the buffer will be bypassed. These statements are:
Select DISTINCT
ORDER BY / GROUP BY / HAVING clause
Any WHERE clause that contains a sub query or IS NULL expression
JOIN s
A SELECT... FOR UPDATE
If you wan t to explicitly bypass the buffer, use the BYPASS BUFFER addition to the SELECT clause.

2. Use the ABAP SORT Clause Instead of ORDER BY
The ORDER BY clause is executed on the database server while the ABAP SORT statement is executed on the application server. The database server will usually be the bottleneck, so sometimes it is better to move the sort from the database server to the application server.
If you are not sorting by the primary key ( E.g. using the ORDER BY PRIMARY key statement) but are sorting by another key, it could be better to use the ABAP SORT statement to sort the data in an internal table. Note however that for very large result sets it might not be a feasible solution and you would want to let the database server sort it.

3. Avoid the SELECT DISTINCT Statement
As with the ORDER BY clause it could be better to avoid using SELECT DISTINCT, if some of the fields are not part of an index. Instead use ABAP SORT + DELETE ADJACENT DUPLICATES on an internal table, to delete duplicate rows.

If you cannot use the primary index to determine a selection result (for example, WHERE condition may not contain any primary index fields), you can create a secondary index.
Optimal number of indexes for a table You should not create more than five secondary indexes for any one table because:
Whenever you change table fields that occur in the index, the index itself is also updated.
The amount of data increases.
The optimizer has too many chances to make mistakes by using the 'wrong' index.
If you are using more than one index for a database table, ensure that they do not overlap.

Database access code in objects constructor, or in data access object
Given an object that is stored in a database, is it better to have the database access code in a constructor method, or a data access layer object? E.g. I have a Person class

Actually lately I've used annotations to label setters with database field names and run a simple home brew ORM to convert rows into objects even when not using a more complex persistence manager.home brew ORM? why is that necessary when you can choose from hibernate, ibatis, jdo, jpa, etc.? that's just nuts.
