Database Instance vs. Central Instance

Hi,
Is there any formal recommendation by SAP to install the central instance on the same server where the database instance is also installed? What would be the trade-off of keeping both on the same machine instead of installing the central instance on a different server? Any help on that will be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Renilton Soares de Oliveira

Hi,
In addition to resource issue (which is most of the cases valid reason for separating DB and CI)  as mentioned by Matt, there is also a security reason people sometimes want to separate DB and CI...
E.g. you can install DB on a separate server which is connected to CI server via a high-speed private LAN. DB server is not opened to Public (User) lan.Only CI server and other application servers are connected to Public (user) Lan.
Cheers !!

P.S.: Pls reward point if answer was helpful...thx.

  • Problem with database instance installation

    Hi@all,
I'm dealing with the installation of the sap solution manager 3.2 SR1.
The platform is a win 2000 server, I use Oracle as the database.
Oracle was installed successfully and the installation of the central instance terminated without errors.
Now I try to install the next step, the database instance.
I always choosed the standard parameters, except for I choosed no domain installation and unchecked using SLD.
Nevertheless, the installation procedure stops at step 16 with the following error log entry (partially translated from german to english):
System call failed. Error 1332 (Allocations of account names and safety identifications were not accomplished.
) in execution of system call 'LookupAccountName' with parameter (NULL, Administrators, ...), line (305) in file (synxcaccmg.cpp).
I've attached the full logfille here.
Looks like sapinst cannot get the system user parameters?
How could I solve this? Any idea?

    This was the clue
I read through the whole planning and preparation tutorial and through the preinstallation and installation tutorial.
There's no recommondation to have the english os version installed.
But better such an easy problem instead of a difficult one
    Thanks a lot!

  • Database instance: You are not a member of the specified Installer group

    Hi,
When I start ./RUNINSTALLER in HP-UX to install oracle, as a part of database instance instalation of SAP, the following message appeared.
"The Oracle Universal Installer Inventory on this system does not exist or is not writable. the possible cause are:
            1. The /tmp/orainstRoot.sh script was not executed with root priveleges, or an error occured during  execution

    Hi,
I am trying to install oracle 9i as required by SAP ECC 5.0. Instance name is PRD as disaster recovery will be tested in that system. In the same time our SOLMAN is running in that system with database oracle 10g. We are planning to run parallel process in same time SOLMAN and DR PRD.
Till now we have done SAP Central instance installation. While trying to install database instance SAP asked to go /oracle/stage/920_64/Disk1/SAP and run the script RUNINSTALLER in HP-UX system for oracle.
To do this I have done the following
    a. Logged on the system as oraprd
    b. Set up environmental variable
              ORACLE_HOEM to /oracle/PRD/920_64
DISPLAY to My work station IP:0.0
    and started OS> ./RUNINSTALLER
After some time a window appeared headed by "Inventory Location"
I Specified base directory /oracle/oraInventory and pressed OK.
Then a window asked to run script /tmp/orainstRoot.sh by root user and then press continue
The script run successfully by user root. But when I press continue the following message appeared.
The Oracle universal Installer Inventory on this system does not exist or is not writable. The possible cause are:
            1.  /tmp/orainstRoot.sh script was not executed with root priveleges or an error occured during execution.
            2.  You are not a member of the specified Installer group.
Please help me how can I resolved the problem.

Where HX1 is the SID for instance.
    2. start the database and then try running the installation.try also starting instance and listener
Let me know if this helps.

  • Is it possible to change the database instance host ??!!

    Hello,
Quick question, I finished the installation of XI 3.0 with all patches.  But the system is running low, very low on resources even though it has 2GB of RAM.  I was wondering if it is possible to migrate the <SAPID> database and then re-configure the central instance and J2EE Engine to access a different machine OR do I have to re-install and follow the distributed system installation process.
    Thanks!

    Diego--
Your issue isn't the database, it's the J2EE server.  Moving the database instance isn't going to save you enough RAM -- you'll run into the same problem again as soon as you start running messages through the system, when the J2EE engine starts allocating heap space for those messages.
Our experience has been that 2GB of RAM is not enough for a development/prototype XI system.  You need 3GB to do a basic prototype/development machine install (but ask for 4GB if this is your permanent development system).  You'll need more than that in a typical production system.

  • MS SQL 2005 clustered database instance.

    Short Text
MS SQL cluster database instance - ONLY!
    Long Text
    Hi,
If possible could you please confirm that our planned landscape
    migration is supported by SAP.
At present our PRD SAP system is a standalone instance that consists of
the database & central instance running on the same "HOST".
    <u>Current SAP PRD version:</u>
    ERP 2004 ECC 5.0 32 bit
    MS SQL 2000 32 bit
both running on same host with OS Windows 2003 32 bit
We plan to upgrade/migrate our PRD SAP system to new 64 bit hardware
AND to move to a "Distributed" landscape installation i.e. database
instance & central instance installed on different HOSTS. Also, the
database instance WILL be clustered but the central instance will NOT
be clustered. There are also multiple NON-SAP MS SQL databases that
will run in the same cluster as the PRD SAP database instance.
    <u>SAP PRD version after migration:</u>
    SAP ERP 2004 ECC 5.0 64bit (running on X86_64 AMD64 hardware) on HOST'X'
MS SQL 2005 64 bit (running on IA64 hardware) on clustered HOST'Y'
Both running on Windows 2003 64 bit
    <u>My questions are:</u>
    1) Does SAP support a clustered MS SQL 2005 database instance that is
running on a clustered HOST along with NON-SAP MS SQL databases?
2)During the migration our PRD SAP MS SQL database will be upgraded
from MS SQL 2000 32 bit to MS SQL 2005 64 bit IA64, is this also
supported in a clustered istallation (database instance ONLY)?
    3) The central PRD SAP instance will be running on x86_64 AMD64
hardware & the database instance will be running on 64 bit IA64
    hardware. Is this configuration supported?
    Thanking you inadvance.

    Hi Greg,
Have you figured out the answer? We are trying do the exactly the same thing -- Move our SAP WAS 6.40 clustered central instance to a 64-bit hardware/SQL 2005/Clustered system. And this system has several non-SAP database on there. The biggest concern we have is whether SAP support this architecture. I posted a message here last year and several experts like Clas Hortien, N. P. C, in this form suggest NOT go to this architecture because SAP will not support it. One example, is that SAP/SQL requires server collation setting to SQL_Latin1_General_CP850_BIN2 and other databases may work on different collations.
Migrate SAP SQL Server database to co-exist with others
Anyway, if you or anyone in this form have some more information please share here.
    Thanks,

    About my installation environment:
    Windows XP
I've enlarged the page file size before installation.
I've looked up the info from Internet, so I've checked the following:
    Under \system32\driver\etc\hosts
10.10.10.10  <domainname> <hostname> is configued as a loopback address (I was prompted to use loopback adapter when installing Oracle, because my network adapter uses DHCP)
    Under \system32\driver\etc\services
sapgw00     3300/tcp     # SAP System Gateway Central Instance Port
sapgw00s     4800/tcp     # SAP System Gateway Security Port
I can ping 10.10.10.10 (get response)
(Any possibility that the installation user can not access 10.10.10.10:3300 ??, I don't know.)
However, I can't logged on the system, because in the MMC, "disp+work.exe" turns yellow(Dialog Queue standstill) and then becomes gray.
Some experts in some forums have commented that a long hostname (>8 characters) might be the problem. Is it true?
(I've not installed the standalone gateway instance yet. ) When do I need to install the gateway instance? Now, I installed as follows: DB software->Central Instance->DB instance.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
I had a similar error, when installing SAP BW 3.1. on windows 2000 advanced server, oracle 9.2.0.6.
FRF-00007 Unable to open RFC connection.
    ERROR 2006-12-04 07:03:21
FRF-00063 RFC logon failed with message: Failed……………………………………
However this holds good for NW 2004 also.
To resolve this error you will need to upgrade your SAP kernel level.
    1)     Download the kernel.  i.e.  sapdbexe.sar and sapexe.sar.
    2)     uncar the files sapdbexe.sar and sapexe.sar using the sapcar.exe
On dos prompt go to the particular directory where u have downloaded the above sar files using "cd" command.
    3)     To Uncar the files use this command on dos prompt
SAPCAR -xvf <your-SAR-file> to uncar the files.
    4)     shut down sap using the MMC.
then in  windows services.msc stop saposcol ,stop oracle service sapserviceSID and  and the sapSID_##
    5)     Now just copy the new kernel files you have uncared above into the /usr/sap/SID/exe/run/ directory of your system
    6)     Start the services you stopped and start SAP using the MMC.
Now you should be able to logon. Sometimes the MMC shows the yellow status due to missing workprocess status. However the system should work fine.

  • Homogeneous System Copy - Installation of Database Instance not possible...

I try to create a SAP NetWeaver 7.0 SR3 Portal based on a homogeneous SAP System Copy. Therefore I already installed in a first step (first option within SAPINST for installing a target system of a system copy) the Central Services Instance successfully on a machine. In the next step I'd like to create the Database Instance with SAPINST but I cannot choose the DB instance that I already created based on a restore within the new DB server (MS SQL 2008 Cluster installation). I can only choose the local machine for using a DB instance but there is no MS SQL Server installed!
Do I have to start SAPINST on the DB server itself which is not possible/allowed (due to operating/organization reasons)?
Is there any SAPINST parameter which I have to use for telling SAPINST that the DB is located on a different server?!?
    The documentation just says:
The target system is installed using the exports from the source system.
Choose the installation services exactly in the order they appear. For more information, see the MS SQL Server installation guide for your SAP system at http://service.sap.com/installnw70.
On the SAPinst screen SAP SystemDatabase make sure to select Homogeneous System Copy (MS SQL Server-specific: Detach/Attach or Backup).
    Thanks for supporting and Regards,
    Claudio Schmidt

    OK, SAP Note 1076022 says:
SAP installation packages on SAP Service Marketplace
On March 27, 2008, SAP released the Netweaver installation package SR3, which supports SQL Server 2008 (R2). Note 1152240 discusses the details and lists some restrictions. Make sure you carefully read Note 1152240 and use a recent enough installation master DVD.
    SAP Note 1152240 says:
If you want to perform a system copy of an SAP system that is based on SAP NetWeaver 7.0 SR3 on SQL Server 2008 (R2), you cannot use the Installation Master and Kernel DVD that you received from SAP or downloaded from SAP Service Marketplace (SMP). Instead, you have to do the following:
    - Patch your runtime libraries as described in SAP note 684106
    - Use a modified Installation Master DVD. For more information, see section "IV Creating a modified Installation Master DVD".
    - Use a modified Kernel DVD. For more information about how to create a modified kernel DVD, see SAP note 1480785.
What problem is fixed by using the modified Installation Master DVD? Is it possible to install the DB part on a server apart of the local machine where SAPINST is run (my initial question/problem I want do resolve)?

    Claudio

  • Multiple database instance on one server

    Hi experts
We are planning to implement ERP, BI, Solman, CRM and MDSD on windows/oracle platform. There is an idea about system landscape that all database instance of production systems are installed on one server and central instances of each system are installed on separate servers. Is there any performance or maintenance risk about this scenario? What is the advanteges and disadvantages of this landscape? Shall we prefer central system installation?
    I'm waiting for your recommandation.
    Best Regards...

    Hi,
From experience one disadvantage in having an Oracle farm, is if the server plays up
or needs a reboot you of course lose all the systems databases.
Also getting all customers to aggree a maintenance slot together can be a pain.
Failover needs to be considered, DR also.
IMHO separate servers, but that is my preference I'm sure there are advantages.

  • Database Instance installation in Distributed System?

    Hi gurus,
When you install a distributed system(SQL Server, AS ABAP), after install the central service instance(SCS), you will perform the database instance installaiton. For this step, can you still run the installation on the SCS host for installing it or you must change to DB host and start the installation at DB host?  My memory is i can do it(install DB instance from the SCS host)  a long time ago, but with new new SR3, i cannot do it. Any body has any idea on it, thanks.
    Peter

so why dont you take central system option.. if you want put both DB and center server on one system...
If I am not replying in the line what your expecting.. please explain detailedly how you want install your system...

Stop the installtion then log into SAP with the User SAP* with password - "06071992" then change the DDIC password to whatever you want.

  • Problem installing Database Instance

    Help,
I am installing the WAS 640 SR1 Abap on a sandbox running Windows 2003 Server.
    I've installed Oracle.
    Installed the Central Instance.
But when I try to install the database instance with SAPInst, it gets to the stage:
    Prepare Oracle Network Configuration
It then copies the Listener.ora and creates a new file Listener.1.ora
Then the installation fails with the message:
Unable to set time for file listener.1.ora
Does anyone know how to solve this and continue the installation ?
    Thanks,
    Tomas.

    Hi,
I solved it in the end and here's how I did it:
I backed up the originals of the tnsnames.ora, sqlnet.ora and listener.ora
then I renamed the originals of all three to something else which mean't that to SAPInst they didn't exist
then I ran the installation and SAPInst worked fine because it created new files for each which it had no problem doing instead of trying to modify and save the original.
    Tomas.
