Database link hangs from source 10204 to remote 9208

Hi,
I have a sql job that runs sql statements on database 10204 connecting to database 9208 via a database link. The job takes about half hour to complete. The source database, 10204 connects to remote 9208 to retreive data from 9208. Most of the processing is performed on the remote db. For some reason, after processing sql statements on remote db, the job hangs. I looked at wait events on remote and it shows "SQL*Net message from client". I looked at wait events on source database and it shows "SQL*Net message from dblink".
It looks to me that there is something wrong with the communication between the source and remote db via the db link.
I tried setting the default_sdu_size from 2k to 8k but this does not help the hanging. I tried runing the job at different times in the day and night but this does not help either. I filed an SR with metalink and they asked me to run trace. I sent them the trace files and they came back saying to bounce the databases. I bounce the databases and still that did not resolve the hanging. Anyone encounter this issue lately? Thank you in advance.

I have seen this before between 2 10g databases, but very rarely, and never identified the cause, so suspected it was from a network glitch. Solution was to kill the hung sessions and restart.
Setup some network tests and leave them running. E.g ping tests, scp tests, and/or open ssh sessions to see if you lose any packets when the database link fails. Check your OS logs for network interface errors. Check if there are any firewalls between the databases which may disconnect inactive sessions.

  • OWB 10g -- Can't Create Database Links for Data Source and Target

We installed OWB 10g server components on a Unix box running Oracle 10g (R2) database. The Designer Repository is in one instance. The Runtime Repository and the Target are in another instance. The OWB client component was installed on Windows XP. We create a data source module and a target module in OWB. The data source is on another Unix box running Oracle 9i (R2) database. We try to create database links for data source module and target module, respective. But when we created and tested the DB links, the DB links were failed.
For the database link of data source, we got the following error message:
    Testing...
    Failed.
    SQL Exception
    Repository Error:SQL Exception..
    Class Name: CacheMediator.
    Method Name: getDDEntryFromDB.
Repository Error Message: ORA-12170: TNS:Connect timeout occurred
For the database link of target , we got the following error message:
    Testing...
    Failed.
API2215: Cannot create database link. Please contact Oracle Support with the stack trace and the details on how to reproduce it.
    Repository Error:SQL Exception..
    Class Name: oracle.wh.ui.integrator.common.RepositoryUtils.
Method Name: createDBLink(String, String, String, String).
    Method Name: -1.
Repository Error Message: java.sql.SQLException: ORA-00933: SQL command not properly ended.
However, we could connect to the two databases (data source and target) using the OWB’s utility SQL Plus.
Please help us to solve this problem. Thank you.

As I said prior the database link creation should work from within the OWB client (also in 10).
Regarding your issue when deploying, have you registered your target locations in the deployment manager and did you first deployed your target location's connector which points out to your source?
I myself had some problems with database link creations in the past and I can't remember exactly what they were but it had something to do with
    - the use of abnormal characters in the database link name
    - long domain name used in as names.default_domain in my sqlnet.ora file
What you can do is check the actual script created when deploying the database link so see if there's something strange and check if executing the created script manually works or not.

  • Clean solution to use Database Links in OLEDB source

    Hi,
I have a connection to server A and from there, I have access to a set of views that are behind a database link.
All the queries I can do follow have the following semantic:
    SELECT CODE, DESCRIPTRION
    FROM STUDENT@DBLINK_DEV
but then in production it will be
    SELECT CODE, DESCRIPTRION
    FROM STUDENT@DBLINK_PRD
Is there any clean solution to have the dblink in a parameter without having to use a SQL statement inside package variable?
    Thank you

I dislike the fact that I cannot simply copy paste thecode into the sql query of the oledb source.
Why do you have to even do that?
The variable takes care of the query by itself by means of expression so all that you do is set expression
    and map the variable.

    - Make sure there are no syntax errors in the file.
Particularly look for unmatched parentheses or stray characters.

    Regards, Imran

    Hi,
In the listener.ora you have -
       (program = tg4msql)
but with 11g gateways the executable name has been changed and you should change the entry to -
       (program = dg4msql)
then stop and start the listener.
If you installed the gateway into an existing ORACLE_HOME then the gateway version must be the same version as the software already installed.
For example, if the existing software was 11.2.0.4 and you  installed 11.2.0.1 gateway this will give you problems and most likely the gateway executable will be 0 (zero) in size.

  • Database link form OLEDB source

    Hello
Is there any possibility to create a Database link from oledb datasource in Oracle 11g? mayby you have any suggestion how can I access Oledb via Oracle, since the Generic Connectivity is not available in the Oracle 11g.
    Many thanks,
    Wojtek

    Hi Wojtek,
To avoid any confusion I will clarify that Generic Connectivity is available in 11g as the product Database Gateway for ODBC (DG4ODBC). This a direct replacement for the 10g generic connectiivty products, such as HSODBC. However, what is no longer available in 11g is HSOLEDB and only ODBC connectiivty is available using the gateway products but not OLEDB.
The Oracle OLEDB provider is still available and the following note may help -

  • Stored procedure with database link with "from table(...)"

    Hi guys,
I've been told I can't create views on a database by the design team and so have to use this stored procedure to obtain the values.
    select HAN_ID, HAN_DS, GLOBAL_IN, LOCAL_IN
    from table(cast(ODADMIN.ODP00002_QUERY.Execute001@DBLINK(11312,'EN') as
ODADMIN.ODP00002_001_Array@DBLINK)) WHERE LOCAL_IN = 'Y';I've been told that it works when you remove the database links (so on the actual database) when you remove the cast part. I've tried it with my link and with/without the cast part but it doesn't work. With the example above I get the error: ORA-00907: missing right parenthesis.
When I remove the CAST-AS and the additional parenthesis it brings i get the error: ORA-00904: "ODADMIN"."ODP00002_QUERY"."EXECUTE001": invalid identifier
When I do table( *"* ODADMIN.ODP00002_QUERY.Execute001@MWW_DEV(11312,'EN') *"* )... -- wrapping the call in speech marks I get: ORA-00972: identifier is too long
Anyone see what's wrong? Thanks for any help.
    Mike

    Hi Ben,
Asking now. By a view I mean one local to the database; I could create one on APEX but then I use the database link twice instead of just 1.
    His reasoning Ben:
Firstly, Maintenance. We will have to maintain additional views (at additional code). Secondly, if the view has a JOIN, then you can't update through it (without complexities). If we have to get the View to pass the data to a Procedure (that's a pain). Also, standards..
All update occur via either a Procedure, or a Base view, across over 1000 tables
That's the standard, and doing things differently is costly long term
People will not know how it works, it will have to be explained, maintained..etc.
If the Application has the Business Rules, then updates via Base Views, that's a more standard way of developing. Also, if you update via this view, you'll update multiple rows in one call, which is in-effficient if only ONE row needs to change. Therefore, single row updates from the Application is more efficient
    The procedure is as follows:
    --SET SERVEROUTPUT ON
    DECLARE
    nPBusLoc       NUMBER(5):=11312;
    sPHanId        VARCHAR2(3):='SB1';
    sPLngId        VARCHAR2(2):='EN';

                          ,sPHanId      -- IN   VARCHAR2

                          ,sPReturnTx   -- OUT  VARCHAR2
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('nPBusLoc                 = '||nPBusLoc              );

  • Select query over database link hanging

    Hi All,
I have been looking all over the internet and all over this forum but i could not find the solution for my issue given below.
There are a number of distributed databases (Oracle 10g) over a private network. Sending and receiving data amongst all the databases work fine. But when one particular database A tries to receive data from database B, it hangs and then the famous old error TNS LOST CONTACT.
Basically, this has been implemented by creating a batchjob. This worked fine for years and now suddenly this is not working only for the two specific databases.
It is just a simple select query being hit on the remote database. This is called through a function in the package, which builds the dynamic select query using DBMS_SQL package.
    It actually hangs when doing DBMS_SQL.PARSE ();
The same function when called in a pl/sql block from database A, works perfectly fine and receives the required data from database B. This was tried with Oracle SQLDeveloper, TOAD and SQLPLUS.
Things seems to be working fine, but actually unaware of the problem. I tried all the suggestions provided over the metalink also.
    Require your help urgently.
    Thanks
    Akhil.

  • The Database Link is not active

try to be more clear, i'm in lack of ideas in this problem.
I am following guide Oracle Database 2 Day + Data Replication and Integration Guide.
I defined global_names parameter of remote database as true.In the step of "creation database link" i am getting error.(oracle enterprise manager 11g-->schema-->database links-->create)
    When i query on remote database(select * from global_name), I got orcl.
So,In "Name" and "Net service name" field i specified orcl.Check radio button "Fixed user." and Username and password of remote database, and i got message "Database Link STRMADMIN.ORCL has been created successfully."
But when i clicked on database link Name i got error, saying that
"The Database Link is not active.ORA-02084: database name is missing a component "
    (Both dbs are oracle 11g.)
    Please reply.

I think I am confused, "what should be Name and Net Service Name" while creating database link in context of "Database Replication." when global_names parameter is true in both database. I read somewhere "If the value of the GLOBAL_NAMES initialization parameter is TRUE, then the database link must have the same name as the database to which it connects." so what should database link name " should it be remote database name? db_domain?( or outtput of select * from global_name).......
my tnsnames.ora on source db is
    ORCL.a.ernet.in =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = a.b.c.d)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = ORCL.a.ernet.in)
when i connect user of remote database(a.b.c.d) from sqlpuls then it is connected.
command which i give : sqlplus remoteUser/[email protected]

  • Change of a database link in OWB

I have a good suggestion to change a a database link when a server is moved to another location (in that case the database link of the source module has to be changed)
In OWB 9.0.2 it's not impossible to delete a database link in OWB, so you have to do it manually
(in 9.0.4 it should be possible, but this version is also not easy to use).
    - Start SQL Plus and log in as the schema on which the OWB repository is created (e.g. OWB).
    - Drop the database link ('drop database link <dblink name>')
    - Create a new database link in the same schema with the new parameters, e.g:
    CREATE DATABASE LINK "<dblink name>"
CONNECT TO "<...>" IDENTIFIED BY "<...>"
    USING '(DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP) (Host = <hostname>) (PORT = 1521))) (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = <sid> )))'
    Done!
No stupid errors in OWB when you create the database link in OWB itself.

  • Sintax error depending database link used

Hi every one, I have a weird weird situation and I need some tips to deal with it.
    A code like that:

    Prashanth
my guess is that you can create the database link, which simply points to the remote instance. however, the problem is on the remote instance.
As the error message suggest, make sure that the listener is up and running on the remote machine. The link can be created, but if there is no listener on the other side, you will not get any response.

Do I need to modify the NLS settings in the SOURCE database before executing a script to insert data into the TARGET database?
    Thanks, Jack

The difference in settings is not a problem by itself, especially that only the NLS_CHARACTERSET matters. Of course, this difference may lead to certain issues if not taken into consideration.
Please, describe symptoms of your problems.

  • Database link with the alias and full description in the connect string

    Hi,
i have created database link with alias in tnsentry and full description
and suppose i have removed the tnsnames.ora file what will be the impact on the database link that is whether database link will work or not i am sure db link created with alias won't work and how about db link created with full description and which one you prefer
    Thanks

    # Parameter file initora for Database prd
    ### Global database name is db_name.db_domain
    global_names = TRUE
    db_name = prd
    db_domain = world
    # TNSNAMES.ORA for prd ###############################
    prd.world = (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS = (COMMUNITY = tcp.world)
    (PROTOCOL = TCP) (Host = 100.10.100.1) (Port = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = prd) (GLOBAL_NAME = prd.world)
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)))
Our database link points from the local database test to the remote database prd. Therefore we need the global database name for prd. Ask the remote database administrator for these information or connect to prd and execute the following query on prd:
    SQL> select GLOBAL_NAME from GLOBAL_NAME;
    GLOBAL_NAME
    prd.WORLD
    CREATE DATABASE LINK prd
CONNECT TO system IDENTIFIED BY system_passwd
    USING 'prd';--- alias
so the connection description will be ---select ename from [email protected]

  • Error Creating Database link

    Hello Everybody,
I am getting the following error while creating the database link using the connection information at OWB Client.
    Testing...
    Failed.
    ORA-12514 TNS: no listener
*Cause:   The connection request could not be completed because the listener is not running
*Action:   Ensure that the supplied destination address matches one of the addressed used by the listener
-compare the TNSNAMES.ORA entry with the appropriate LISTENER.ORA file
Start the listener on the remote machine.
The version of OWB Client is 10.1.0.2.0.
When queried at oracle using the userid which i used to login OWB Client i.e. as shown below
select db_link from all_db_links - the database link is created. But none of the obects are accessable with the db link.
Note: I am able to create a database link explicity by issuing the command at backend oracle i.e create database link etc. and also able to access the tables.
    Kindly help.
    Thanks

my guess is that you can create the database link, which simply points to the remote instance. however, the problem is on the remote instance.
As the error message suggest, make sure that the listener is up and running on the remote machine. The link can be created, but if there is no listener on the other side, you will not get any response.

  • Could not initialize the Password Store Database Link value in Preference Store

I have 9iAS release 2, insfrastructure and midtier installed on the same Windows 2000 box...
I am trying to install and configure portal on remote machine (solaris) on RDBMS 9.0.1.4...
    - Portal installation was no problem
    - creating a new DAD was no problem
Now, I am trying to configure portal with MIDTIER mode...It falls over on STEP 1 for INSTALL_ACTION:assocPortalToExistingSSO() module with following error message:
"SQL> Could not initialize the Password Store Database Link value in Preference Store
    ERROR: User-Defined Exception"
Database link is been created on my remote database by ptlasst.bat command...
How do I see whether that DB LINK is working properly ?
    Any comment would be helpful...

I found the problem to the iTunes Music Store connectivity. When iTunes version 6 is installed, it places a configuration / preferences file in the following location:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref"
This file contains several very large keys:
    Preferences:129= (41,826 characters in length)
Music Store= (1,722 Characters in length)
Somewhere in these keys is stored are references to userid's, connections or other TCP/IP / internet connectivity objects that are being used when iTunes is installed. By deleting this file, these old setting appear to be cleared out.
In my case, one or more of the keys in this file appear to have been storing a property from my old dial-up ISP connection that was no longer valid for my new, Comcast cable modem connection.
Once I deleted this file, and re-started iTunes, it was as if I had never run the software before. I bypassed the option for searching for and importing .mp4's from My Music, and Itunes opened correctly, with full access to the music store. My library and playlists were intact and all is well.
Apple should re-write the protion of iTunes codes that stores anything pertaning to an internet connection that may change over time. Alternatively, iTunes should either A) Prompt for this information B) Enable user access to this parameter in a settings dialog C) Access this information dynamically at runtime.
