Database links issue ORA-01017 ORA-02063

Oracle 11g R1 , RHEL 5 64bit
HI all,
I am having this strange issue with my database links. They used to work in the past but now they are not. Here is what I have checked:
- All the TNSnames.ora file entries are there and are correct...I double checked with tnsping
- I changed all the passwords to be the same on all environments (DEV/QA/PROD)
- I have dropped and re-created all the database links
However, I still get the same error when I test them:
ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied ORA-02063: preceding line from <database_name>
Here are the links created on DEV:
SQL> select * from dba_db_links;
OWNER DB_LINK USERNAME HOST CREATED
PUBLIC FPRCQA.FPRC.OPHTH.WISC.EDU FPRCQA 01282009
FPRCHR FPRCQA.FPRC.OPHTH.WISC.EDU FPRCHR FPRCQA 01282009
PUBLIC FPRCPROD.FPRC.OPHTH.WISC.EDU FPRCPROD 01282009
FPRCHR FPRCPROD.FPRC.OPHTH.WISC.EDU FPRCHR FPRCPROD 01282009
The above links were created using the following syntax:
SQL> conn sys as sysdba
Enter password:
Connected.
SQL> create public database link FPRCQA.FPRC.OPHTH.WISC.EDU using 'FPRCQA';
Database link created.
SQL> create public database link FPRCPROD.FPRC.OPHTH.WISC.EDU using 'FPRCPROD';
Database link created.
SQL> conn fprchr
Enter password:
Connected.
SQL> CREATE DATABASE LINK FPRCQA.FPRC.OPHTH.WISC.EDU CONNECT TO FPRCHR IDENTIFIED by <passwd> using 'FPRCQA';
Database link created.
SQL> CREATE DATABASE LINK FPRCPROD.FPRC.OPHTH.WISC.EDU CONNECT TO FPRCHR IDENTIFIED by <passwd> using 'FPRCPROD';
Database link created.
Now when I do a simple query, I get the error:
SQL> select count(*) from fprchr.department@FPRCQA;
select count(*) from fprchr.department@FPRCQA
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied
ORA-02063: preceding line from FPRCQA
I have read some notes on metalink, but they were talking about situations where you have a 10g database connecting to an 11g database and the whole password case-sensitivity issue, but this is not the case here as all the databases are 11g.
I would appreciate any and all help on this issue.
Thank you much.

The documentation has the answer:
user IDENTIFIED BY passwordSpecify the username and password used to connect to the remote database using a fixed user database link. If you omit this clause, the database link uses the username and password of each user who is connected to the database. This is called a connected user database link.>
Since you haven't specified user/password in your public database links, then Oracle will try to create a connection on the remote db with the same user/password who is trying to use the database link. If the user doesn't exists or has a different password then you get an error (the same you mentioned in you original post)

  • How to resolve  database link issue???

    Hello all,
    actuall i want to access a remote database server which is basically an Oracle8 server and i want to access that server while sitting in Oracle8i server....
    I have tried create database link but it's not functioning properly ..........
    it's giving an error some think like "Can not resole TSN Service name....."
    Now plz help me to resolve that issue and kindly tell me all the pre-requsits and plz send me a piece of code as well..................
    Thanks In Advance,
    Omer Saeed Khan.

    it's giving an error some think like "Can not resole TSN Service name....." Honestly. Give us a proper error message with a number. "something like" is not good enough.
    Have you read the documentation?
    http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/A87860_01/doc/server.817/a76960/toc.htm
    If I have to guess I'd guess that you haven't included the remote database in the server-side TNSNAMES.ORA file.

  • Database Link gives Ora-12535 error

    I have Oracle 9i Release 2 on NT 4 box. I am attempting to connect to an Oracle 8i Database via a database link. I am able to connect to the database using my username and password throught Toad. I can see the tables that I am trying to query through the link. I have tested the service through the Oracle Net Manager and it was successful. Anytime I try to use the database link, I get the "ORA-12535 TNS: Operation timed out" message. Does anyone know if this is a bug in Oracle 9i Release 2 since the link worked in Oracle 9i Release 1? Is there a workaround for this problem?

    You must have defined DGPAPROD.WORLD in tnsnames.oar on server where you DB is runnig.Hello there,
    Thanks a lot for this nice solution. In fact I had to add the connection parameters into the tnsnames.ora file of the server on which the link was created (not the tnsnames.ora of my oracle client stored on the localhost)
    After a bit googling I found another solution that allows to create the database link:
    CREATE PUBLIC DATABASE LINK SR001_dblink CONNECT TO user IDENTIFIED BY password USING '(DESCRIPTION =  (ADDRESS_LIST =  (ADDRESS = (COMMUNITY=tcp.world)
    (PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=ip_adresse)(PORT=1521)))(CONNECT_DATA = (SID = GPAPROD)))';Thanks a lot for your help!

    I've had some problems in the past with in-doubt transactions with a DB link to a Sybase database. I can imagine it is more difficult for Oracle to manage transactions over a DB link if the the database is not Oracle. Especially with SQL Server/Sybase that do their own commit by default. Might that be the case here?
    ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channelThis also indicates a network problem.
    You can also post this in the General Database forum.

  • The Database Link is not active

    try to be more clear, i'm in lack of ideas in this problem.
    I am following guide Oracle Database 2 Day + Data Replication and Integration Guide.
    I defined global_names parameter of remote database as true.In the step of "creation database link" i am getting error.(oracle enterprise manager 11g-->schema-->database links-->create)
    When i query on remote database(select * from global_name), I got orcl.
    So,In "Name" and "Net service name" field i specified orcl.Check radio button "Fixed user." and Username and password of remote database, and i got message "Database Link STRMADMIN.ORCL has been created successfully."
    But when i clicked on database link Name i got error, saying that
    "The Database Link is not active.ORA-02084: database name is missing a component "
    (Both dbs are oracle 11g.)
    Please reply.

    I think I am confused, "what should be Name and Net Service Name" while creating database link in context of "Database Replication." when global_names parameter is true in both database. I read somewhere "If the value of the GLOBAL_NAMES initialization parameter is TRUE, then the database link must have the same name as the database to which it connects." so what should database link name " should it be remote database name? db_domain?( or outtput of select * from global_name).......
    my tnsnames.ora on source db is
    ORCL.a.ernet.in =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = a.b.c.d)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = ORCL.a.ernet.in)
    when i connect user of remote database(a.b.c.d) from sqlpuls then it is connected.

    your sid is DEVDB so create dblink using oracle_sid
    If you specify only the database name, then Oracle Database implicitly appends the database domain to the connect string to create a complete service name. Therefore, if the database domain of the remote database is different from that of the current database, then you must specify the complete service name.

  • Error in database link(ORA-02063 and ORA-02391)

    Hi
    database link was working fine till this morning. now when i try to query using the database link, i get the following error
    ORA-02391: exceeded simultaneous SESSIONS_PER_USER limit
    ORA-02063: preceding line from RMSLIVE
    It would beof great help if you can advise why this error is occuring.
    many thanks.

    The error stack is quite obvious.
    Either, the profile, with which the database user on remote database is running, must be modified to allow more connections or investigate the session leak in the application talking over database links.

  • ORA-01017 error while using a database link

    Hi all,
    I have a TNS entry as below
    HOME=
    (DESCRIPTION=
    (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=10.66.205.110)(PORT=1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA=(SID=HOME))
    I have created a database link as
    create public database link link92.com using 'HOME'.
    This was created successfully and an entry was made in all_db_links table.
    However if i try connecting to a table in the remote database...for example
    select * from emp@link92;
    I am receiving an error ORA-01017(Invalid username passwd).
    Would appreciate if somebody could help me out.
    Thank you

    It is not that the Database Link is "PUBLIC" that makes it use the current username/password.
    It is that the Database Link has been created without specifying a " CONNECT TO username IDENTIFIED BY password " that makes the DBLink behave as a "current user database link" using the current username/password to connect to the remote database.
    You can have a PUBLIC database link that uses a "CONNECT TO username IDENTIFIED BY password" such that all connections use the same remote username and password.
    You can also have "private" (ie not PUBLIC) database link that does not specify a "CONNECT TO username IDENTIFIED BY password" which becomes a "current user [owner] database link".

  • Database link error - ORA-01017

    Hello all. I have a problem with a database link. I create the link like this -
    create database link agenda
    connect to user1 identified by user1pw
    using 'agenda'
    ... I have read where you need to make the link name the same as the Net8 name. I create the link, no problem.
    Then when I try to use it -
    select * from myTable@agenda
    ... I get a ORA-01017: invalid username/password error.
    This is impossible! I use the agenda service in Toad no problem, and log in with the same user/password.
    Anyone have any idea what's going on here? I have tried re-doing links for every database I have, all with Net8 services that are working, and with correct,usernames/passwords, and they all give me the same answer! Help

    Hi,
    i don't have a solution for your problem but i want to share with you my research in using Database Links with XE/Apex.
    I have done it a in a lot of projects and in most of all cases it shows a strange behavior when using Database Links via Apex. As far as i know SQL-Request in Apex are executed via the DBMS_SQL-Package. And that seems to be source for all errors and strange behaviors you get.
    If you post a SQL-Request directly from your XE, everything's fine. If you do the same from APEX, sometimes it is very slow and sometimes it fails.
    So, my approach to this issue is to work with Materialized Views. Your can create MV's on your XE to reference your remote tables and even schedule refreshes. In Apex, you only work with these MV's instead of the remote tables. And everything's going to be fine!
    Hope this helps!

  • ORA-12154 when using Database Link

    We're running 11r2 on our servers. I have a primary db and a standby db, using Data Guard. The standby is open for read-only querying. We are not using ASM.
    The primary (and thus the standby) have a PUBLIC database link to a third db server.
    When I run a query against the database link on the primary: select * from test@MyDBlink; Everything works fine.
    When I run the same query against the database link on the standby: select * from test@MyDBlink; I get ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier.
    I check that the db link exists on the standby. It does.
    I go to command prompt on the standby and run "tnsping MyDBlink". It executes fine. It says "Used TNSNAMES adapater to resolve the alias" and sure enough, MyDBlink is referenced in the TNSNAMES.ORA.
    I also run "tnsping IP-of-MyDBlink" to doublecheck. No issues.
    What is going on that is blocking the db link on the standby? Many reports utilize that standby and I'd hate to deny them the functionality of a db link.
    Thanks

    ThanksMost people with this problem don't understand that the dblink is just another client, no different than sqplus running on the same machine - and therefore the link uses the tnsames in the ORACLE_HOME of the database containing the link. But it seems from the steps you've described that you've grasped that. The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is when you try sqlplus from the standby server you are hitting a different tnsnames than the one the database is using.

    I found solution.
    Main problem was in GLOBAL_NAMES parameter.
    This description help me:
    Problem Description:
    ====================
    You receive an ORA-02069 error during an insert to a remote database through a
    database link when the insert contained a local sequence.
    ORA-02069: global_names parameter must be set to TRUE for this operation
    Cause: A remote mapping of the statement is required but cannot be
    achieved because global_names should be set to TRUE for it to
    be achieved.
    Action: Issue alter session set global_names = true if possible
    Problem Explanation:
    ====================
    This is expected behaviour.
    The insert statement is transformed so that it can be executed at the remote
    end of the dblink. The reference to the local sequence has to be qualified so
    that the remote end knows to call back to the local instance. The qualification
    is made by appending @local_dbname.domain to the sequence reference if
    global_names=true. When global_names=false, the code cannot make the assumption
    that the qualifier will be valid and reports the error ORA-02069 'global_names
    parameter must be set to TRUE for this operation'.
    Search Words:
    =============
    DBLINK SEQUENCE GLOBAL_NAMES ORA-2069
    Solution Description:
    =====================
    Use the following workaround:
    1. Create a 'temporary' table on the local database for holding the inserts.
    2. Insert the entire row into this table.
    3. Insert the 'temporary' row from the temporary table to the remote table.
    4. Delete the 'temporary' row from the temporary table.
    This is slower but it will get around the problem. It help me
    OR
    Set GLOBAL_NAMES=TRUE in the init<SID>.ora - not work for me
    Solution Explanation:
    =====================
    The first workaround bypasses the remote node having to make a
    call back to the local instance to reference the local sequence.

For some reason now whenever I tried to import a new Database Object (table) from the DB2 I enter the password, test it and it successfully connects but then I get the error message on a popup box:
    SQL Exception
    Persistent Layer Error: SQL Exception
    Class Name: CacheMediator
    Method Name: getSQLResult
    Persistent Layer Error Message: ORA-01729 database link name expected
    If I create a new location for the same database it works and I can import new objects. The only difference I can think from the initial imports is that I’ve moved the repository from one server to another. Might be the case where some information got corrupted in the metadata.
    Has anyone seen this kind of problem before? Can you please help me out with this issue?
    Thanks in advance for your help.
    Regards,
    Leo

    I found it.When I look at the db links there is something missing.When I correct it everything works fine.
