Database management software

Hi Dudes,
Couldn't find any better forum than this to get an answer to my question. I am looking for a software where I can create and manage a database. The target is to record scientific journal's title, author, source, year published, keywords and so on. What would you recommend?
Thanks for your support in advance.
Szimi

Szimi,
I would suggest Filemaker Pro or Bento. Filemaker Pro is capable of operating on either a Windows or Mac platform, while Bento is limited to the Mac OS 10.5.
I'm not sure how complicated your database will get, but Filemaker offers a powerful solution for databases of all sizes.
Check out: http://www.filemaker.com/ and http://www.filemaker.com/products/bento/overview.html

  • Oracle Database Management Software

I'm curious about your opinions on database management packages. The first one being Grid Control, but also your opinions on Quest Spotlight, Central, etc & Symantec i3. And any other products that are used.
Our 10gR2 DBs operate on Solaris 9 (soon to be 10) and are used for Data Warehousing purposes. I'm looking for a suite of tools that can help us manage our OS, Storage & DB products, if such a suite exists. It seems like we spend most of the day fighting fires and we want to get out in front of those things before they become issues for our users.
    Regards,
    Rich

Oracle Enterprise Manager pretty well covers it all, and it comes free with the database. At 10g it becomes web based and comes in two flavors - dbcontrol for working with a single database (if you have multiple databases, each has its own dbcontrol) or Grid Control, which sets up a management server and provides a single point of control for all your databases.
From what I've seen (and I've worked a little bit with Spotlight and DBArtisan) everything else just re-arranges the eye-candy - for a price.

  • Please recommend photo management software.Thank you.

    Hi everyone,
I am looking for suggestions and advice about photo database management software.
I will be graduating as a veterinarian in February and plan to document my forthcoming cases, using photos and perhaps some videos. At this point in time I believe it will be useful if the software is available for Mac as well as Windows platform (see later why).
However, I am open to any suggestions regarding Mac-only or PC-only programs as long as they are professional, reliable, strong, fast and customizable.
The photos entering the database will be:
    1. close ups (taken with or without flash) or
    2. taken from a close range (about 1-2 m for pets or about 5 m for horses/cows),
    3. except for cropping, brightness and sharpness adjustments, there will be NO editing
    4. saved in RAW, TIFF or JPEG. (I am not yet clear about the differences between these however the software should be able to handle as many major formats as possible).
    Ideally, the software would allow:
    1. to create custom keywords and add descriptive comments for each photo.
    2. grouping of photos based on different criteria, themes, parents etc.
    3. fast search
    4. custom search, based on a large range of criteria, including text
    5. Mac-PC interaction: Allow me to explain this: I have 2 laptops (Mac & PC) onto which intend to install the software and if the working environment uses PC only software, I will have the PC with me, otherwise the Mac and the database is always at hand.
    6. data attached to each photo will move with it when the photo is transferred to a different machine using similar software (see above).
    Thank you for your time.
    D.M.

You should take a look at iView Media or its Pro version. It is a cross-platform (Mac and Windows) program that is free of some of the stultifying limitations of iPhoto. For example, you can create multiple catalogs and you can easily catalog media (not just photos) that are not on the current disk, like media stored on CDs. It has very flexible cataloging features.
If they have not changed their licensing, you can buy one license to run both the Mac and PC version for one price. You can make one catalog and easily pass it between a Mac and PC with no translation or confusion. This would be much easier than trying to make it work with iPhoto and some other Windows program.
If you were to go the iView route, you would have to "sync" the data back to the photos so that they carry your keyword etc. data with them to other apps. I don't know if iPhoto embeds that info back to the photos, or if it stays in the iPhoto database only.
Photoshop Elements 4 is great on Windows, but the Mac version of Elements does not include the cataloging feature because it integrates with iPhoto. I'm not sure how smooth that all works.

  • Database manager for Java DB/Apache Derby?

Does anyone know a great and free database manager software with GUI for Java DB/Apache Derby where I can create and open databases? Something like Mysql Administrator and Mysql Query Builder for Mysql.
    Thanks in advance!

I don't think there is any separation between CCMS and other systems, all use one database. If you use MaxDB use Database Manager, if smth like SQL Server or Oracle use standard tools of this vendors, like Enterprise Manager third party tools also helps you, cause I don't see any difference between

  • Address book database management???

Address Book doesn't seem appropriate for database management so what is best database management software for mac users including 3rd party? If this isn't an appropriate question for this site please direct me to another resource. thx.

    pamtyson,
I'm still not sure exactly which model of Mac it is, but as it's original version of OS X was Panther 10.3.3, it is entirely possible that AppleWorks was included.
If it is not in HD > Applications: This Folder, you can use the utility Pacifist, to extract it from the 10.3.3 system discs, if it was included.
    You can then install it.
But you really should explore using Address Book, as it has numerous functions and capabilities.
    Open Address Book.
From the Help menu in the Toolbar, select Address Book Help, or just press the Command + Shift + ? keys.
    Review the various topics.
    Copied from there:
"Address Book enhances the power and usefulness of other applicationss and other devices connected to your computer with flexible and functional contact management."

  • Can I use a project/issue management software with LabVIEW?

    There are project/issue management softwares.
    I only know Redmine.
Can I use LabVIEW with such softwares?

I am not aware, that you can hook LabVIEW to tools like bug tracing databases in a native way.
What you can do is performing that link in a context of requirements management. Use NI Requirements Gateway for this functionality.

  • InDesign Project Management Software

We are working with inDesign CS4 on a 80 page field services industry publication.  We are struggling keeping articles and advertisements managed before, during and after editing and layout.  Does anyone now of a project management software for magazine publications?

    Hi Mitch,
I've spent the last few years researching software project management solutions in another specialized field, and I think that you're missing the boat when you're thinking about software. If you don't know how to manage the information you already have with just whiteboards & manilla folders and the like, you're going to be at a severe disadvantage when trying to shop around for a prefab database that will manage your workflows on your behalf.
Check out this discussion of PM tactics; there's some good food for thought.
    http://www.edwardtufte.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=000076
Of course, if your information is already in disarray, and your workflows are already being pushed along manually, then of course the idea of managing it with software is appealing. However, you'll best be able to ask those questions ("How are y'all doing it? Because we're doing it with hand-drawn Gantt charts on whiteboards") if you already have a system. If you don't already have a system that you want to replace, then you're best off hiring someone who is not only a DB dev but who is also familiar with the ins and outs of project management. That person can spend a few days/weeks learning what you have instead of a workflow, and can then build a software-based workflow around your organization's activities.
With about 35 ads and 45 articles we are having a hard time keeping up with what has been received from contributors and writers, whats in layout, 2nd edits, 3rd edits etc.... and feel we need something to help us stay organized outside what inDesign does.
As a database-workflow-managin' pro, it's my feeling that you don't need something, you need someone. And that someone is the person to ask, "How do I shop for a software-based workflow management app?"

  • Best information manager software?

I work as a reporter and often research large, sprawling investigative projects. I'm looking for the best information manager software out there, and am wondering what would work best. Here are the features I'm looking for:
-Allow me to me to easily attach a reference to a file (as opposed attaching a whole file, which would eat up a ton of space), AND allows me link to a particular section w/in a file (for PDFs, Word / RTF docs, web pages, etc.). Some sort of drag and drop feature would be great...
-It would be great if it would also allow me to attach a similar reference to sound files as well, such as WAV or MP3s -- for interviews.
-Interfacing w/ Spotlight and, if possible, Mailsmith, NetNewsWire, and FileMaker Pro (tricky, I know).
-Powerful searching capabilities, and searching options that will allow me to refine searches
-Indexes everything, builds cross-references, and allows extremely flexible input
-Encryption or some level of added security
I've heard people reference Devonthink Pro, Circus Ponies' Notebook, Yojimbo, and TopXNotes. Any suggestions?

I've heard MySQL is great for maximum flexibility in designing a database, but i've also heard it has a sharp learning curve and isn't very user friendly. Does it interface very well w/ other app's? What about Spotlight?
I currently use FileMaker Pro, but it doesn't interface w/ Spotlight or DEVONthink or...well, many app's actually. I tried downloading the most current version of Bento, but unfortunately it requires Leopard. Will see if I can find an earlier version to play around w/... In what way do you see DEVONthink as too confining? I'm tooling around w/ it right now and so far it seems pretty good, but I'd love to hear about it's shortcomings.
Thanks for your feedback! Any other suggestions / ideas...?

  • Calibration Management Software

I work at a research lab that has approximately 7 test cells.  Each cell has around 50 measurement channels using field point or PXI/SCXI DAQ read by Labview.  Hooked up to those channels are TC's, pressure transducers, flow meters, level sensors.  We have some in-house calibration equipment (PRTD's with dry well's, high accuracy pressure sensors with pressure sources).  In the past calibration was done by comparing the readouts of the calibration equipment with the readouts of the Labview screen by typing the information into Excel, generating curve fits in Excel, and then typing the data into Labview (or maybe even reading a file in Labview) and then the calibration equations are run in the Labview program.  The different calibration points (say 70 oF, then 80 oF) have been set manually by a person watching the operation.  I have gone through and used Labview to automate reading the calibration sensor and changing the setpoint on the source (dry well).  This is a great accuracy improvement and time saver.  The next logical step is to keep the calibration history in a database so that we can evaluate drift over time, etc., instead of decentralized Excel sheets for each channel.  We have found many companies that make "Calibration Management Software" (CMS), though none that do not require extra customization so that I can take the data from my automated Labview Calibration routine and enter it pragmatically into the CMS, and then pragmatically recall calibration coefficients from the CMS.  At my previous employer I saw a software package have this sort of communication with MetCal/Trak, though in talking with the fluke sales man he started talking of extra licensing fees, paying them to write specialized code, etc. beyond just paying for the MetCAL/Trak.  The added cost to get the Labview integration was left an undefined number.
Does anyone have a good solution that they use that they could share some details on?

    Hey James,
Sadly, I'm not familiar with any calibration management software that does not require added customization. When you say that you have the calibration history in "decentralized Excel sheets", what exactly do you mean? My thinking is that you can develop your own CMS using the file writing/reading in LabVIEW. If that's not feasible, it seems like you may have to look more into the customized CMS option.
Hope you have a good one!

  • Using MaxDB database manager via SAP::DBTech::dbm Perl module

    Hi,
we would like to use the SAP::DBTech::dbm module to access the MaxDB database manager with perl.
The MaxDB 7.7 doc states that the module is a component of the MaxDb software but I cannot find the perl includes.
Does anybody know how to install or configure the module?
In the MaxDB Installation I found in the file /sapdb/<SID>/db/doc/FirstSteps/Perl/HowToPerl.html that one has just to
include the c:\programme\sdb\maxdb1/misc folder to $PERL5LIB. The folder exits but just contains the files to create and drop the demo database.
    Regards
    Thomas

    Hello Maike,
as far as I understand your question, you'd like to automate the installation for your end-users.
In the end it's a local installation where one user works with his/her Database Studio installation - correct?
If it would be possible to add the end users to the user group 'SDB Operators' they should be able to create the user management database and Database Studio should work.
    Best regards,
    Melanie

  • No Oracle database vault component found in Oracle database 10g software?

No Oracle Database Vault component found in Oracle database 10g software. Where can I get the Oracle Database Vault software(10g)?

Database Vault is not a include by default into the database server software. You have to install it in addition of the Database Server Software.
You can download it from :
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database_vault/index.html
Note, you need to have "Oracle Label Security" and "Oracle Enterprise Manager Console" previously installed in your ORACLE_HOME.
Find out more in the install doc :

  • Small library management software

    Howdy, archers!
I've been looking for a library management software, because there is a small collection of English and German books, video tapes and whatnot here in my university, and people want to replace the Access database someone made long ago to catalog the books etc. I found some apparently clumsy and poorly documented -- let alone, old. For instance, BiblioteQ, and Koha, which seems to be the better one, but I think it'll be somewhat complicated to implement (I'll be running it on Windows, but I'll try to persuade people that Linux is a better idea).
Well, I'll keep searching but if you people know some simple, smart library management software, please, let me know.

I found a couple by searching the iTunes library for "Library management", but nothing that does exactly what you want. You may want to look into a general database app such as HanDBase, which is not specifically for books, but has a lot of available pre-defined databases, can do barcode scanning, and has a desktop version that it can sync with. I've been using it going back to my Palm Pilot days.

  • Hypersonic SQL client program (Database Manager)

I would like to ask if there are some hypersonic Sql client program which can provide me a convenient environment for altering the table structure easily.
I have used the database manager provided by it and tried using other JDBC client program like isql in sourceforge.
I dont know whether there is tools which is written for HSQLDB. If there is, please tell me. Thanks very much for your kind act!!

sorry I should say it is HSQLDB
Actually, it is very powerful and light such that many open source software love to use it.
    http://hsqldb.sourceforge.net
Actually, the package it provided is enough for general purpose
But for building complicated application , I think it is not enough if I change field and data type very often.

  • Nexus 5000 Fabric Management Software

Do I need the Fabric Management software to configure the FC & FCoE features on the N5K?
Can I use the unlicensed version, if I just have (2) N5K's in a cluster?
Do I still need to install the database, if I don't use the Performance Monitor?

yes, you do. If you want to use the server version. There is another option, called "standalone", to pick during the installation. It was free as I know.
