Database reorg or coalition

Hi,
I have a verybig table with 500,000 rows and it's growing everyday with 70-80 rows. When i query this table it's taking lot of cpu time becoz it has to scan all 500,000 rows.Ofcourse i dont needthose many rows in that table i can delete rows whic are prior to a month. If i delete those rows using delete, however the empty blocka will be there untill reorganise tablespace. So if i run query now it stil need to search all 500,000 rows eventhough there is no data.To get rid of this i am planning to user reorg or coalition. Please suggest me some yntaxfor these and procedure todo it.That table is crucial to orgnisation so i dont want to lock that table as well.
Thanks
Anand

Anand
some points first
1) 500,000 rows is not very big in Oracle terms (depending on record width)
2) why are you using full table scans - you should use indexes if possible
ok - now some answers
when rows are deleted the space blow the HWM will be reused by new rows, so if you delete 100,000 rows then the fts time will not decrease but the table segment size will no longer increase.
if using 10g and ASSM then - after deleting rows you could do
"alter table big_table enable row movement"
"alter table big_table shrink space"
this only locks the table for a few seconds at the end in order to move the HWM and indexes are maintained

  • Best way for Database Reorg.

    Hi Experts
I want your advise on what is the best way for Database Re-Organizing / Database Refresh.
    Regards.

    Hi,
what is the best way for Database Re-Organizing?Good question!
Oracle's official way to do online table reorgs is with the dbms_redefinition utility, and here are my notes:
    http://www.dba-oracle.com/t_online_table_reorganization.htm
Under the covers, it uses CTAS, which can also be done in parallel:
    http://www.dba-oracle.com/t_create_table_select_ctas.htm
Of course, you can also do reorgs with Data Pump . . . .
what is the best way for Database Refresh? I use a fast clone procedure:
    http://www.dba-oracle.com/oracle_tips_db_copy.htm
    Hope this helps. . .

  • Database reorg

    Hello,
The customer wants to know whether it's time that we do a reorganization of our SAP Netweaver 7.0 database.
The thing is, the growth of teh database is not much, hardly 1 GB per month, but maybe internally the database is fragmented (windows term).
So how is it that we decide, if it is necessary to reorg the database? I know we need to look in Tx db02. But what exactly in Db02?
    Kindly suggest.
    Thanks.

    >But there is no mention of Database Reorganization anywhere
Early-Watch Report does mention about bad storage qualities. both for tables and indexes.
It lists top 20 tables and indexes with bad storage qualities. I am not sure why your EWA report does not show that. but in our report ( Both for BW 3.5, and BI7 ) we get these information.
By the way, what is your ST-PI and ST-A/PI  version? There is a bug in 2008_1_640 but after applying one note correction now again we get these information.
Some portion of my latest EWA is given below.
    0.0.1 Auxiliary Storage Quality Information
The following table shows the top "regular" (not partitioned, empty, index organized) tables (max. 20) that have more than 1000 blocks with the lowest storage quality (based on the available CBO statistics).
    TABLES WITH FRAGMENTATION
Table Name     Rows     Average Row Length     Blocks     Kb Used     Kb Needed     Kb Wasted
    BALDAT     10050500     196     10873585     76235087     1933543     74301543
    UCL2040     2707167     218     1286381     9018862     578974     8439888
    DBTABLOG     56460000     271     2617504     18351413     14997188     3354225
    Action: Reorganization
The last column (Kb Wasted) shows how much disk space can be recovered through reorganization.
    Caution:
The Oracle bug 5842686 (detailed in SAP Note 821687) may cause calculations to be incorrect for tables with long raw fields. This bug can be fixed as of Oracle Release 10.2.0.2.
The following table shows the top "type normal" indexes (max. 20) that have more than 1000 blocks with the lowest storage quality (based on the available CBO statistics).
Even if your EWA does not provide these information, in my last post there is one link. Click on that, you will get one SQL, by which you can get this information

  • Reorganizing database

    Hi All,
I was going through various discussions related DB reorg.
    Re: Database Reorg.
    reorganization of DB
I believe the concept of reorganizing database is almost like defragmenting freespace in Windows systems.
If it is not done since a long time will it affect the performance since the blocks are scattered all over the datafiles (due to DMLs)? Any method by which we can identify whether a DB is candidate for doing reorganization?
I didn’t face this situation. Just for being aware of this I am enquiring this.
    ~Thanks
    Oracle is Oracle 10.2.0.2

    OK,Thnx for the clarification,
    But still...
If as a result of reorg free extents will come
together and new insert etc operations can make use
of that free space instead of extending datafile (Not
    in all cases).
Please clarify...If you are using Locally Managed Tablespaces (LMTs) all free space is always usable. The idea of coalescing free space to get a usable extent is a holdover from Dictionary Managed Tables.
    >
I think SAP applications recommends doing reorg with
help of tool know as SAPDBA which internally uses
    exp/imp.
I don't have any personal experience with SAP, but other commercial vendors I've worked with (as well as most in-house developers) are notorious for their lack of understanding of how the database works, and so depend heavily on long-obsolete rules and concepts.
    ~Thanks

  • Oracle Database Reorganization

    hi,
Planning to reorg oracle database for apo. This involves transparent tables and also cubes. Is there any SAP recommended Oracle reorg strategy / guide for doing so.
would appreciate any detailed guide is available.
    Thanks,
    RajS

    Hi,
You can perform online database reorg on APO system. An online
reorganization is online per definition, so it doesn't interfere on a
logical consistency layer with other system components.
The online reorg need additional CPU, disk space and other system
resources. If possible, we do not recommend to do the online reorg when
you have heavy workload on the system.
If you want to understand more about BRSPACE online reorganizations

  • Space released during Orcale DB reorg..??

    Hi All,
We have to do database reorg. Do we have a method to know:
1.How fragmented  tables and table spaces are?
    2. How much approx space would be released after the reorganization?
Please guide how to go about it. Any method or any approach someone has done and can share will be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Vicky

    Hi,
You can take out the list of top tables from db02 and have to look for the tables in this list which are being archived or regular pruning jobs are running. Entries are deleted from this table and hence having fragmented space. There is a sql query to find out the net DE-fragmented space in a table but right now I dont have it. You can search for it.
Sometimes table lob segments will have lot of fragmented data. In the top tables list you may find some tables which are small in size but lob segment belonging to it is huge in size.
Follow the below method to find DE-fragmented data
    table size :
    SELECT BYTES/1024/1024/1024 FROM DBA_SEGMENTS WHERE SEGMENT_NAME='table_name';
    lob size:
    select bytes/1024/1024/1024 from dba_segments where SEGMENT_NAME='lob_name';
to see the lob belongs to which table and column
    SQL> select TABLE_NAME, COLUMN_NAME from dba_lobs where SEGMENT_NAME='lob_name';
    LOB segment fragmentation:
You can use DBMS_LOB.GETLENGTH to determine the space used within an LOB segment. You can use the following script to determine the net allocation of the existing LOB segments:
    SELECT ROUND(SUM(DBMS_LOB.GETLENGTH("CLUSTD"))/ 1024 / 1024) "NET(MB)" FROM SAPSR3.table_name;
Run the below queries before and after you run reorganization to verify cleared space :
    select sum(bytes/1024/1024/1024) from dba_data_files;
    SQL> select bytes/1024/1024/1024, segment_name from dba_segments where segment_name = 'table_name';
Also cross check the #tableentries b4 and after run >select count(*) from <schema>.<table_name>

  • Any way to delete services placed in Archive queue?

    Hi,
Already know how to move Old services to Archive Queue automatically, but now my question is if there is some posibility to delete not needed services moved to archive queue. We just don´t need them anymore and want to clean also that queue and do database reorg.
    Thanks in advanced,

found it by myself, this was a silly question, sorry fot that

  • Migration of BW system to New Hardware and Upgrade to NW04s

    Hi,
I'm not sure this is the forum for this post but here goes...
We have recently started a project to migrate our current BW3.5 system to new hardware (HP Superdome) and then upgrade to NetWeaver 2004s.
To do this, we've taken a copy of our current Dev 3.5 system and moved it to the new hardware and will unicode and upgrade to NW04s.  Once this is complete, we plan to install NEW instances of QA and Prod with NW04s.  We will TRANSPORT all our configuration and reload all the providers in QA and Prod.  This will be a MASSIVE task as we have hundreds of infoproviders.  Additionally, I'm concerned we will not pick objects currently in 3.5 Prod system (e.g. custom queries/workbooks, infopkgs, process chains, variables, etc.) but not in current 3.5 Dev system.
My question is this - can we instead take copies of the current QA and Prod (3.5) systems and migrate, unicode, and upgrade in the new Superdome hardware.  Per Basis, this is NOT possible due to the size of the current systems - approx 2.5 Terabytes.  But maybe half of the database is consumed by old PSA's, unused providers, etc.  If we were to clean up our current system and do a database reorg to reduce the database size, is it possible to do a system copy (Dev to Dev, QA to QA, Prod to Prod) --> any help/insight is much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Senthil

I had this experience in my previous project and i wanna share a with you. we have migrated our total bw landscape from alfa servers to HP superdome servers.
we took all the copies of all the boxes( dev,QA,PRO) and migrate to superdome and upgrade to NW04. but in your case you are not taking copies QA and PRODUCTION. This is not realistic scenario. you got to move all the objects and configuration from dev to respective systems and load the data in the production.
so you have to take all the copies of all the boxes and migrate to superdome and upgrage to NE04, is the right way of doing.

  • Reorg complete database

    Hello,
we got rid of a couple of clients on the DEV and QAS System after the project finished.
I assume that we now need to reorg the database. So far I have only found instructions how to reorg a certain table. Is there no "reorg everything" command in Oracle?
    Thanks for thinking!
    Andi

    Hello Andreas,
    please review note
#646681 - Reorganisation von Tabellen mit BRSPACE
and don't be misled by the tile.
It's explained in the note how to reorganize complete tablespaces.
A "reoganize everything" is not available and also not necessary most often.
If you want to just have the database reloaded from scratch - then you can perform a export and import via the R3load tools (just like you do it for heterogenous system copies).
But in the case you described I'd propose to stick with BRSPACE.
    regards,
    Lars

  • Reorg Oracle Database for BW

    Hi,
We are about to start a project to reorganize our BW instance which runs on Oracle 10.2.0.4.
This operation is well know by our company.
Yet, we are not really expert on dedicted points regarding BW and reorganizing.
Does anyone has guidelines or best practices to reorganize huge BW tables ?
Is it a good idea to put huge BW tables in a dedicated tablespace (as we did on R3) or not ?
Is it a good idea to put PSA tables in a dedicated tablesspace ?
    Thanks for your answer.

    Issac,
Just to add check below links  & sap notes
    https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/70c8f19f-8010-2c10-ac89-8d828039d8b4
SAP Note 541538 - FAQ: Reorganization.
Also note down that you cannot perform online reorganization for tables with LONG or LONG RAW fields but you can convert them to CLOB or BLOB online. After this conversion, you can reorganize all tables online. Check see SAP Note 646681 for more information,

    Hi Guenther,
I've managed to bring up the SAP now after changing some parameters
in the instance profile that are pointing to D:\. It's now up and
running, but the dispatcher is in yellow colour. The status
is "Running, Message Server connection ok, Dialog Queue time: 0.00 sec,
J2EE status info unavailable". I did not select Java during the
    installation. Only ABAP was selected.
I am able to login to the R/3 system now. I notice that there are some
parameters in the instance profile are related to the Java like
rdisp/j2ee_start, login/accept_sso2_ticket and etc. Is it possible that
database backup that I used to restore was from a ABAP + JAVA system?
Please see below for the dev_disp

  • Reorg tables in 8.1.7

I'm planning to reorg 500+ tables in 5-6 schemas from prod. instance to new one. DB is 8.1.7.4
I'm thinking on using 2 approaches:
    1) using db cloning from current prod. to new then re-org selected tables to different tablespaces, or
    2) export tables using table mode than import to new prod. by chaning default_tablespace for target user.
Which is better option if objective is to re-org tables to different tablespaces within schemas. Also want to use new lay-out mgmt, i.e. change dictionary to locally managed, tune the new instance, etc.
    Thanks in advance.
    BAM

Or just create a database link from your new box to the production box. You can then run CREATE TABLE new_name AS SELECT * FROM old_name@the_db_link; Though INDEXES will not be created...

  • Loss of space after reorg of compressed index

    Hi Oracle experts,
In 2008 we compressed indexes of ECC system as per sap note 1109743 and
    obtained high compression ratio.
Now we have upgraded to oracle 11.2.0.2 and BRTOOLS 7.20 (10).
While using brtools to do table reorg/compression as per note 1431296
    indexes loose compression factor.
                                                                  before                     after        compression
    GLFUNCA           PSAPGLFUNCA       41,574,400             11,468,800 enabled
    GLFUNCA~0       PSAPSTABI             699,712                    5,555,648 enabled
    GLFUNCA~1       PSAPSTABI             263,872                     2,112,384 enabled
    GLFUNCA~2       PSAPSTABI             446,528                     3,531,072 enabled
    GLFUNCA~3       PSAPSTABI          1,051,904                      5,047,872 enabled
I have tried uncompressing and compressing indexes again but cannot compress to
same factor, results are same using brtools or oracle command.
I have tested on coy of system where table GLFUNCA is uncompressed and indexes compressed.
reorg of indexes result in same bad  compression factor.
key used for compression is same.
any  advise, how to regain index compression factor  or anyone having similar experirence.

    Hello Daljit,
First time I heard about this kind of behavior. I already faced index with the same size after compress, but it happened because the number of colunm was wrong defined.
    My suggestion:
    1.Uncompress one index (rebuild without compress);
    2.Identify number of column that should be compress;
    3.Rebuild with compress nologging;
    4.Active logging

  • Database growth following index key compression in Oracle 11g

    Hi,
We have recently implemented index key compression in our sap R3 environments, but unexpectedly this has not resulted in any reduction of index growth rates.
What I mean by this is that while the indexes have compressed on average 3 fold (over the entire DB), we are not seeing this with the DB growth going forward.
ie We were experiencing ~15GB/month growth in our database prior to compression, but this figure doesnt seem to have changed much in the 2-3months that we have implemented in our production environments.
Our trial with ACO compression seemed to yield reduction of table growth rates that corresponded to the compression ratio (ie table data growth rates dropped to a third after compression), but we havent seen this with index compression.
Does anyone know if a rebuild with index key compression  will it compress any future records inserted into the tables once compression is enabled (as I assumed) or does it only compress whats there already?
    Cheers
    Theo

    Hello Theo,
Does anyone know if a rebuild with index key compression will it compress any future records inserted into the tables once compression is enabled (as I assumed) or does it only compress whats there already?
I wrote a blog about index key compression internals long time ago ([Oracle] Index key compression), but now i noticed that one important statement is missing. Yes future entries are compressed too - index key compression is a "live compression" feature.
We were experiencing ~15GB/month growth in our database prior to compression, but this figure doesnt seem to have changed much in the 2-3months that we have implemented in our production environments.
Do you mean that your DB size still increases ~15GB per month overall or just the index segments? Depending on the segment type growth - maybe indexes are only a small part of your system at all.
If you have enabled compression and perform a reorg of them, you can run into one-time effects like 50/50 block splits due to fully packed blocks, etc. It also depends on the way the data is inserted/updated and which indexes are compressed.

    Stefan
