Database starts in nomount
I have something I've never seen before and Googling is failing me.
I have been working on a Windows server that is running a few Oracle instances. One of the many instances on the box always starts up with a nomount status and the listener shows it as BLOCKED; as expected. Logging in and starting the database up will resolve the BLOCKED status and allow connections.
My issue is that when the box is rebooted or the instances windows service itself is stopped and started, the database always starts up in NOMOUNT and is then listed as BLOCKED on the listener. All of the other instances go straight into a ready state.
Is there some kind of configuration that I can change to make this instance boot as the others do? I already tried recreating the windows services as a last ditch effort, but to no avail.

Should the STANDBY database be in NOMOUNT Mode?
Hi There,
Just setup DataGuard and want to monitor the primary and standby databases via the grid. However, I can not configure the standby database because the standby database is in NOMOUNT mode. Was I suppose to mount it? If not, how do I configure the standby database with the enterprise manager in NOMOUNT.
Thanks.
JJennifer;
Yes the standby should be in MOUNT mode before apply starts. Or No, to NOMOUNT if you prefer.

Database Started In Restricted Mode...
Dear Exports,
We are using Oracle 10gR2 on Windows server 2008. My database size is approximately 2tb. Now we are going to setup Dataguard for our primary. We started the database with the changer parameters for dataguard and create spfile from pfile. And started the database with Spfile. But after some time i noticed that the database started automatically in Restricted mode. As in our database Previously dataguard was configured, due to the some problem that setup is not working and the logs are not applied in Standby server. I thought may be for this reason database going to restricted mode automatically so i set the log_archive_dest_state_2='DEFFER' and Now I scanned the whore alert.log file and found the same situation of restricted is happening from Jan 2010. Please Suggest some solution how i can over come the problem.
The alertlog when i started the database recently...

You have following choices to free up space from flash recovery area:
1. Consider changing RMAN RETENTION POLICY. If you are using Data Guard,
then consider changing RMAN ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY.
2. Back up files to tertiary device such as tape using RMAN
BACKUP RECOVERY AREA command.
3. Add disk space and increase db_recovery_file_dest_size parameter to
reflect the new space.
4. Delete unnecessary files using RMAN DELETE command. If an operating
system command was used to delete files, then use RMAN CROSSCHECK and
DELETE EXPIRED commands.

How to automate the Oracle database start and shutdown process
How we can automate and oracle database start and stop procees with Linux start/shutdown process.
I want to automatically start the oracle database at the time linux server and shutdown the database on shutdown linux server.Hi,
I can share my scripts:
1) /home/oracle/start_oracle.sh
#Script should be ran as Oracle user
cd /tmp
export ORACLE_SID=orcl
export ORACLE_HOME=/oracle/ora9i
lsnrctl start
sqlplus -S /nolog <<ENDSQL
connect / as sysdba
startup
exit
ENDSQL
emctl start dbconsole
isqlplusctl start
NOTE: emctl and isqlplus are optional
2) /home/oracle/stop_oracle.sh
#Script should be ran as Oracle user
cd /tmp
export ORACLE_SID=orcl
export ORACLE_HOME=/oracle/ora9i
isqlplusctl stop
emctl stop dbconsole
sqlplus -S /nolog <<ENDSQL
connect / as sysdba
shutdown immediate
exit
ENDSQL
lsnrctl stop
NOTE: emctl and isqlplus are optional
Then what you need:
1) K91oracle_stop (put it in the desired run level)
#!/bin/bash
# description: Stop Oracle before reboots
su - oracle -c "/home/oracle/stop_oracle.sh" >> /home/oracle/stoporacle.log

Based on what you posted we can NOT tell WHAT database/PDB that last command is showing data for or what DBs are being started and opened.
A STARTUP command only starts/opens the root/CDB by default. It does NOT open ANY PDBs.
If you want PDBs to be opened at startup you need to create an AFTER STARTUP trigger to open them.
The code you posted shows a startup but does NOT show if the PDB is open and does NOT show that the current container is the PDB when you check that parameter.
Rerun your test and post ALL of the info needed that shows:
1. the PDB is actually being opened,
2. the current container is set to the PDB
3. the value of the parameter for that PDB
That is, AFTER you stop/restart the database use EXACTLY the same commands you used at the start: show the pdbs, change the container to the PDB and then show the parameter value.
Post the FULL results of doing ALL of that. -
Testdrive N4S with Fedora 8 - Database Start failure
Hello,
I installed the System N4S successfully on a Fedora 8, kernel 2.6.23, but Database start ends up with failure.

This library was obviously not included in the testdrive.
However this seems to result only in a warning and to be not the real problem.
I saw somewhere already a comment advising an upgrade of the database-version because of some library conflicts with an other problem:
https://forums.sdn.sap.com/click.jspa?searchID=7692305&messageID=3719866
Can somebody advise on that topic?
Thank you and kind regards,
AxelDear Axel,
having no XUSERs (needed for database connection) makes an automated database start impossible. Can you check, if you have a XUSER file in the home directory of n4sadm?
$> su - n4sadm
#> cd
#> ls -la .XUSER.62
-rw------- 1 n4sadm sapsys 1724 Apr 20 2007 .XUSER.62
If it is there, but you can't connect to the database, it should make a copy of the old one with:
mv -a .XUSER.62 .XUSER.62.org
and create a new one, which you should do if the file isn't there as well:
/sapdb/programs/bin/xuser -U DEFAULT -u sapn4s,sapn4sadm -d N4S -n n4shost -S SAPR3 -t 0 -I 0 set
/sapdb/programs/bin/xuser -U c -u control,sapn4sadm -d N4S -n n4shost -S SAPR3 -t 0 -I 0 set
/sapdb/programs/bin/xuser -U c_J2EE -u control,sapn4sadm -d N4S -n n4shost -S SAPR3 -t 0 -I 0 set
/sapdb/programs/bin/xuser -U w -u superdba,sapn4sadm -d N4S -n n4shost -S SAPR3 -t 0 -I 0 set
After executing the 4 commands, a new .XUSER.62 file will be there, which allows you to start the database.
Thanks,
Hannes -

Trigger - Execute once database started.-
Hi, It's possible to start trigger once database started even before any DML activity take place.
Basically I need to check & update existing record for with certain condition then update the data.
I should not do this manually using a procedure,... but instead a trigger have to do it automatically.
Is this possible,... does Oracle update any table when it starts up.? Maybe I can use that.
Please help..
Thanks in advance.

FOR EACH ROW

BEGIN
IF :new.employee > '4000' THEN

else

END IF;
END;I don't think you need this at the database level. You may want to do this check in BEFORE UPDATE or BEFORE INSERT Table level trigger

Database starts with other user
Hi everyone!
I have a rman catalog I want to start with orarman OS user.
The binaries belong to oracle user, since it's installed in a two-nodes cluster. Active node has the production instance (startup with oracle), and the pasive node the rman catalog.
There is only one oracle software in each node (which belongs to oracle)
When I try to start rman catalog with orarman in the second node, it only starts up with oracle user and not with orarman.

Provided the orarman user is in the Unix dba group, you should be able to startup the database.
In your post you don't show the result of a startup command, not even a startup nomount.
So far no one can see what you did to reach the result the instance is stopped.
Can you
sqlplus / as sysdba
startup nomount
if this doesn't work stop here and post the error message.
alter database mount;
again if this doesn't work stop here and post the error message.
alter database open;

Column name in the database starts with a number!
Hello,
Recently we updated out database and we changed our tables' and columns' names, I'm developing an adf application with EJB3.0 the question is that the new column names start with a number (eg. 001U_ID), its a kind of encoding the names of the tables so no one can modify the values.
When I create a query on the table it is throwing an exception:
Caused by: com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: Incorrect syntax near 'U_ID'.
I think the problem is that the EJB3.0 doesn't recognize column names starting with a number!!! What can I do to solve this issue?
Thanks

I have to start it manually every time by giving the startup command.
what is the procedure to start database automatically with machine startup? In windows, oracle is started as a service.Check the service name of your database is mentioned as Automatic so that with thenext reboot of themachine, the service comes up automatically. This will bring your db up in the next startup of the machine.

Hello,
I screwed up one of my test databases and no i don't have a backup. Database is Oracle10gR2 running on W2K3. Server is a virtual server. I assumed all the disks were on a vmware volume so I took a snapshot before playing around. After playing around I reverted my snapshot back thinking i was good to go. Turns out my database files resided on a SAN volume and my control files, and everything else was on the vmware volumes. So now my datafiles are out of sync with the control files. Here is the output from \bdump\alert_gistest.log...
