Databases and Database instances

Hi,
I have been trying to figure out if a database, that is, datafiles, control files, etc can have multiple instances (sga, pga, background processes) accessing it. Is this possible?
Thanks.

Thanks.I am not sure that I did get you clearly but did you mean that one set of files can access multiple instances? If yes than this is called Real Application Clusters.Read this,

  • Multiple Database Instances on Single Server and effect of NLS_LANG

What is the effect of the NLS_LANG registry setting on a Windows server that is to host multiple database instance each created with a different database character set ? The server needs to support data in the following languages : Thai, Chinese Traditional, Chinese Simplified, Vietnamese and Korean. Selecting the Unicode character set(AL32UTF8) is not an option since the application is not Unicode complaint.
My understanding is that as long as NLS_LANG is set correctly on the client connecting to the particular database instance then the data will be stored correctly - is this correct ?
What should NLS_LANG be set to on the server if there are multiple oracle instances with different character sets ?

My question is not in relation to connecting to the database on the server itself but with regards to client connections. What I need to know is what is the effect of the NLS_LANG setting in the registry on a server that has multiple databases each created with a different character set ?
Say for instance, the server has two databases - one created with the character set ZHS16GBK and the other created with the character set JA16SJIS and NLS_LANG is set to SIMPLIFIED CHINESE_CHINA.ZHS16GBK in the registry on the server. Will Japanese data that is inserted into the database that has character set JA16SJIS be stored correctly when it is inserted from a client with NLS_LANG set to JAPANESE_JAPAN.JA16SJIS even though NLS_LANG is set to SIMPLIFIED CHINESE_CHINA.ZHS16GBK on the server ?

  • Create dev and test instances of Apex on the same server and database

I have a dev and prod instances of Apex on different servers. I want a test instance on the same server as the dev instance.
I am using workspace export/import so all instance workspaces have the same workspace id. The application ID is the same on each instance, in the same workspace. This allows pages to be exported/imported in the differenct instances.
My question is (I am sure it is obvious) can I have more than one instances of Apex on the same database (dev and test) and have each instance have identical Workspace IDs, etc.
    Sam

    Hi Sam,
But you can have more than one database on the same server.
What we do is create a separate database for each APEX versions we are supporting (we still have a customer using APEX 2.0).
All the databases are accessed with the same APACHE config. All you have to do is change the DAD and have a separate dad for each database (i.e. each APEX versions).
    ex : /pls/apex_dev /pls/apex_test
This way , I can run different APEX versions on the same server.

  • Listener (and database instance) does not starts up automatically: ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor

Hi at all.... I'm a newbie with database oracle.,
    I have the follow problem:
I installed Oracle Database 11g R2 XE on my guest operating system CentOS 6.5.
I have changed  the hostname in my SO CentOS (where is installed oracle 11g R2 XE) after installation was completed successfully.
-) Before and during installation the hostname was localhost.
-) After installation I changed the hostname in VMCentOS
From the moment I changed the hostname, nothing starts up automatically. In particular, the listener and the database instance does not starts up automatically.
When I starts up the listener manually and I try to connect to database instance with SQLPLUS i get this error:
ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor
I think that the problem is due to the changed hostname because I, for testing and debugging purpose, re-installed a new OS CentOS virtual machine, re-installed oracle database 11g and  I have not got that problem. The database instance and the listener starts up automatically!
Can any one tell me if maybe the problem is related to the hostname changed? ... and Why?
P.S.: After changed the hostname I have also modified the listener.ora and the tnsnames.ora by modifying the HOST with the correct hostname.

  • Diagnosing an ASM space issue for a primary and a standby database instance with external redundancy.

I've received an alert from Enterprise manager saying "Disk Group DATA_SID requires rebalance because at least one disk
is low on space". My colleague who I would go to with this question is unavailable, so this is a learning opportunity
for me. So far google and Oracle documentation have provided lots of information, but nothing that answers my questions.
I've run the following query on both the primary and standby databases ASM instances:
    select name, disk_number, sector_size,os_mb, total_mb, free_mb, redundancy from v$asm_disk;
On the primary I get 4810M Free space and 18431M Total Space
on the standby I get 1248M Free space and 18431M Total Space -- this is the one that complained via OEM
When I run the following query in the database instance:
    select sum(bytes)/1024/1024 MB from dba_segments;
    I get 3736.75M as a result.
    My questions are:
    1. Will OEM's suggestion to rebalance the disk actually help in this situation since the instance is set up with external redundancy?
    2. If I've got 18G of space and only 3.7G of data, why is OEM complaining?
    3. How can I reclaim what I presume is allocated but unused space in my problem disk group?
    4. How can I determine what extra data the standby has that the primary doesn't since both have the same total space allocation, but different amounts of free space?

Thank you for the reply. That link is very good.
We are an 11.1 version of our database. Linus is OEL 5.6.
So, looking at the portion of the link that refers to 'Add Standby database and Instances to the OCR' - If we use SRVCTL to give the STANDBY the role of ‘physical_standby’ and the start option of ‘mount’, what effect will that have if the STANDBY becomes our PRIMARY?
Would these database settings need to be modified manually with SRVCTL each time?
We understand why the instance is not starting when the node is rebooted, we are looking for a best practice of how this is implemented.
    Thank you.

  • Web Services and database instances

    Hello,
When creating web services, you have to choose which database instance you would like to use. At our company (as I'm sure every other company) we have a test database and a production database. During creation and testing, I would select our TEST database. Great.
Now, I would like to deploy this to our production database, but this web service is hard coded to look at our test instances. I have read a few topics on this and they say to edit the data-sources.xml file at deployment, but there has to be a better way to handle this.
Any information on how to go about handling this better would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Matt Harris

    Hello Matt,
Actually, modifiing the data-sources.xml (or any equivalent resource file) is the way to do it. You best ought to choose a database/connection neutral name as data-source name and refer to that in data-sources.xml. This file can be modified after deployment, any compiled java-classes where the data-source name is being refered to, can't.
    Best regards,

    Hi Guys
Can Database Instance and Central instance can be on two different hosts with two different operating systems? Can anybody provide links for different SAP architecture options.

    Hi,
In every installation guide, you will find the a section " Planning " where you architect How to Distribute Instances to Hosts.

  • Difference between Database, instance and schema

    Hi
I don't know the clear difference between database, instance and schema.. In the broad sense, everything seems to be the same. If anyone can differentiate between them with some example, that will be of great help.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
In Oracle, people often do use "database" and "instance" interchangeably, or together as one term: "database instance".
A "schema" is quite different. A schema is a collection of objects (such as tables, indexes or procedures). Every object belongs to exactly one schema, and every schema is a part of exactly one database. (Names may not be unique, however. For example, your database may have one schema named SCOTT, and another schema named USER1. Each of those schemas may have a table named EMP. The EMP table in the SCOTT schema, or SCOTT.EMP, is not the same as the EMP table in the USER1 schema, or USER1.EMP. A different database, my database for example, may also have schemas called SCOTT and USER1, which are completely independent of the SCOTT and USER1 in your database.)

If you recovered only the database ensure that
Database Name and Instance Name remains unchanged.
Listener name and ports is the same
Ensure they all services can start successfully. If not, recreate the services.
If you recovered any other thing other than the database, ensure that you followed the correct recovery procedure for both the database and directory structures
    e.g
Directory names and structures are recreated as before Crash
Oracle and Agent Homes remain the same as before crash
IP Address and Ports remain unchanged
Then restart both the database and db control
In short, the important thing is to keep all all before crash especially for DB Control to work immeiodiately.

  • ORA-12505: Database Instance and Agent Connection to Instance will not work

    Hi,
I have the following error: in Oracle 10g I try to connect to OEM and the listener is up but the Database Instance and Agent Connection to Instance are down. When I attempt to restart the instance, OEM will just hang indefinitely. I have used tnsping and the results are OK. Is that descriptive enough? What can I do to fix this?
    regards,
    John

I changed the SID because I was mistaken and thought of the oracle database name. I have corrected the ORACLE_SID to that given in my tnsnames.ora file which I post here:
    ORACLE =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = Lasirius-laptop)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = oracle)
    EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC1))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SID = PLSExtProc)
    (PRESENTATION = RO)
These are the default settings that were made on installation. I have been working with this installation for 2 months, and it just suddenly stopped working. I have changed no other settings apart from the mistaken ORACLE_SID environment variable in this post, which has now been changed to PLSExtProc. Here is my init.ora:

  • Multiple database instances and JDBC

The data I need resides in two different database instances. Can I make two jdbc calls to two different instances, in the same java code?Any better suggestions?? Please.

No, you don't need to close the first before creating the second one.
The connections will be entirely unrelated unless (as duffy indicates) you need to wrap the operation in a transaction so that they will either complete together, or not at all. If the operations are unrelated, there is no need to do this.

  • ASM and database instance sharing same home. Can i split them?

Hi I am running on 10.2.0.1.0 in a 2 server RAC cluster on linux. ASM and db instance are sharing the same home.
I now need to upgrade my ASM instance and clusterware to 11g, but just want to keep my db at 10g because of some compatability issues ( i will probably still need to upgrade the db to 10.2.0.5.0).
Is there any way i can split my Oracle Home so that i now can upgrade my ASM home and keep my prod DB instance still at 10g?
    Thanks again. John

  • 10g Enterprise Manager is not able to connect to the database instance

I am running a Oracle 10g database in Solaris 10 server. When i am trying to connect to the enterprise manager it says Enterprise Manager is not able to connect to the database instance.
The database instance is open, the listener is up and the agent connection also says that it succeeded.
The server houses two 10g databases and the EM was working properly till yesterday. Kindly Help.
    Thanks in advance.

I tried the following fixes spread across different threads in this Expert Forums:
    1. Someone said network problem.  I rebooted, restarted the install and even redo it.
    2.  Another suggestion was to use caps on the password.  Didnt work.
    3.  One suggestion was to update the keydb.xml file.  However, I could find such property name:
    search for the table t_SAPComponent_SAPSystemLogon_SHARED
    then look for <fld name="pPW">, <properties>,
<property name ="GUIENG_USER_INPUT" and set the value
    "GUINEG_TRUE" to "GUIENG_FALSE".
    4. I even used the ddic password 19920706 which is supposed to be the default.
    5. Restarted the instance and applied all the fixes above.
Does anyone know what is going on base on the logs above?  Thanks.

try moving all your install disk onto local file system then rerun the install. That might work....
