Dataguard info

Hi,
I am new to data guard and was going through the docs, i do understand what a physical standby and logical standby database is.
In both the redo logs are applied in physical its redo apply and in logical its sql apply, but i want to know as to how these redo logs get automatically transferred from production to standy database? which parameter is set during configuration that makes these changes.
Also do the production and standy share a common archive log destination or recovery destination or its different or different.
thanks,

thanks you for quick response Asif,
I have gone through the link, i am confused as to which parameter helps in transfering the redo from primary to standy
From the below standyby server and primary database pfile's which parameter transfers the redo logs
Note: We will be modifying both the primary and standby parameter files to handle being in either the primary or the standby mode for quick switchovers.
Standby Database Parameters (changes in copy of primary’s values):
Change pathnames, such as control_files, background_dump_dest,
core_dump_dest, user_dump_dest, and audit_file_dest, and add:
# log_archive_dest = /orcl/oradata/PROD2/archivelogs
log_archive_dest_1 = ‘LOCATION=/orcl/oradata/PROD2/archivelogs MANDATORY’ # for switchover
log_archive_dest_state_1 = ENABLE # for switchover
log_archive_dest_2 = ‘SERVICE=myserver_prod LGWR SYNC’ # for switchover
log_archive_dest_state_2 = ENABLE # for switchover
standby_archive_dest = /orcl/oradata/PROD2/archivelogs
standby_file_management = AUTO # or MANUAL for raw devices
remote_archive_enable = TRUE # TRUE or RECEIVE, change RECEIVE to SEND on switchover
instance_name = PROD2
lock_name_space = PROD2 # use when primary and standby on same system; same as instance_name
fal_server = myserver_prod # “fal” is Fetch Archive Log, for log gap resolution
fal_client = myserver_prod2
db_file_name_convert = (‘/PROD/’,'/PROD2/’)
log_file_name_convert = (‘/PROD/’,'/PROD2/’)
Primary Database Parameters (changes in primary’s values):
#log_archive_dest = /orcl/oradata/PROD/archivelogs
log_archive_dest_1 = ‘LOCATION=/orcl/oradata/PROD/archivelogs MANDATORY’
log_archive_dest_state_1 = ENABLE
log_archive_dest_2 = ‘SERVICE=myserver_prod2 LGWR SYNC’
log_archive_dest_state_2 = ENABLE
standby_archive_dest = /orcl/oradata/PROD/archivelogs # for switchover
standby_file_management = AUTO # for switchover; or MANUAL for raw devices
remote_archive_enable = TRUE # TRUE or SEND, change SEND to RECEIVE on switchover
instance_name = PROD
lock_name_space = PROD # use when primary and standby on same system; same as instance_name
fal_server = myserver_prod2 # for switchover
fal_client = myserver_prod # for switchover
db_file_name_convert = (‘/PROD2/’,'/PROD/’) # for switchover
log_file_name_convert = (‘/PROD2/’,'/PROD/’) # for switchover
(If primary uses spfile, wait until after the standby database
files are copied/created to make these parameter changes.)
Standby Database Datafiles, etc.thanks again,
regards,

    ThxWhy would you want to? Don't you think you might possibly need that information when tracking down a problem? I can already see your next post a month from now ..

  • 5 Dataguard questions on implementation and maintainence

    I have created Oracle10g Dataguard Physical standby. Everything seems to working properly. I switch a log@primary and i see it applied at standby. In OEM the Primary instance is shown as "Primary" and Dataguard Normal.
    Questions
    =======
    1.I used cold backup to create physical standby where i copied just the datafiles. I DID NOT copy the online logfiles from primary DB . Is this ok?
    Reason i am asking is, I am seeing this in alertlog (Please see in Bold below). Could this message in alert be ignored?
    Fri Mar 14 16:11:55 2008
    Redo Shipping Client Connected as PUBLIC
    -- Connected User is Valid

    Media Recovery Waiting for thread 1 sequence 141 (in transit)
    Fri Mar 14 16:12:58 2008
    2. Physical standby was created in default mode " MAX PERFORMANCE" but i followed the manual and i realize i created standby redo logs at primary DB.
    Is it true we do not need standby redo logs for MAX PERFORMANCE mode?
    3. What is the quickest way to create a physical standby taking into consideration the downtime of the primary database.
    4. Can we setup Dataguard for a live running production database (assuming prod is all set with prepare steps as laid out in manual) without downtime.
    5. I hear dataguard management involves lot of shell scripting for log shipping, failover, switchover etc. Looking at 10g manual all these appear to be handled automatically if configured. Is it true that all the Dataguard functionality is auto and does not need shell scripting?
    These are the things came up to mind. Please list any others you can think of for a Dataguard implementation. Any help greatly appreciated.
    Thanks and have a great time.
    S~

    My question is , I havent created either online logfiles or standby log files on the secondary database, then how is RFS process applying the logs to the standby database?
    If you do not create standby log files on the secondary database, then RFS process will apply logs from primary DB's archieved redo logs, refer 5.1 Introduction to Redo Transport Services.(http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14239/log_transport.htm)
    Also i see entries in v$log@standby, since i haven't created log files@standby where is this info getting from?
    It will be through the entry in Stndby DB parameter file "LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT=
    '/arch1/chicago/','/arch1/boston/','/arch2/chicago/','/arch2/boston/'
    Thanks

  • Change db name in dataguard

    Hello
    Has anyone experience changing database name(including datafile locations),sid,data and control file location in operational dataguard setup
    My understanding following below steps
    1)shutdown primary and standby (stop managed recovery)
    2)change db name in init.ora of primary and standby change database name control file location
    3)create control file for primary from trace(script) make changes for db name and file locations
    4)mount and open primary database
    5)create standby control file
    6) transfer standby control file to standby
    7) mount stand by database and start manage recovery
    let me know if these steps can change database name and file locations without any error
    Thanks

    I would think the control file would have to know about the change.
    I would consider the DBNEWID Utility to change the database name if I had to.
    If you change the database name the DBID will change.
    I'm thinking it would require a standby rebuild.
    Here's some more info:

    Hi All
    I am trying to aquaint my self with the DataGuard concepts but I must admit I have limited knowledge/exposure into this side... when I have set-up the DR so as to ship archives from the primary to disaster recovery site geographically located else where.. and that was in oracle 9i 9.2.x release..
    Now there is 10g and then 11g.. and as I learn DR has evolved alot in its implementation methodologies. I am trying to fid an anecdote which can talk in a little detail/more detail but some detail less than the oracle documentation it self would be..
    Honestly, when I pulled out the pdf's, I could not proceed much length... and am coming here.. for your help...

I got a very good link from oracle corporation. This is divided into topics, you can go one by one and ask quetions in the forum if you feel like. Check this

  • Script for auto recovery of standby node - Simple dataguard

    Hi.
    I have set up several solutions with Oracle SE and simple dataguard on linux.
    On physical standby, I have created a script which performs the recovery every 15 minuts:
    source /u01/app/oracle/sb_scripts/.profile_websb
    /u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/bin/sqlplus "/ as sysdba" <<EOFSQL
    recover automatic standby database;
    exit;
    EOFSQL
    However, I am trying to perform the same on a windows environment but struggles a bit with the script.
    Initally I tried %ORACLE_HOME%\bin\sqlplus / as sysdba @c:\scripts\recover.sql
    Where recover.sql has been:
    recover automatic standby database;
    exit;
    and :
    recover automatic standby database until cancel;
    alter database recover cancel;
    exit;
    Neither of these exits the bat scripts but awaits user input on CANCEL after the last archived log has been added.
    Anyone with a bright idea on how to solve this?
    Thanks.

    This script I use for windows (linked from my old site at http://www.niall.litchfield.dial.pipex.com/ ) uses
    alter database recover automatic standby database until cancel;
    alter database recover cancel;Note the extra alter database I'll admit I haven't run this personally in 2 or 3 years now.

  • Third party backup software support for dataguard configurations

    Any Oracle document about the subject?
    I would be interested in an answer about backupexec 2010 r2 in particular, because reading the manual for its oracle agent there is information about Oracle/RMAN and RAC support, but nothing about Dataguard integration, that could be a value added.
    Anyone using third party backup agents in a Dataguard configuration?
    Interested in version 11gR2 on Linux.
    Thanks,
    Gianluca

    yes, you should be able to use the full backup taken in middle and use the rest of the log backups taken afterwards to restore the database.while I do not use TSM, we use QUEST(DELL) LITESPEED, that takes full backup once a day and log backups
    every 15mins.
    if someone accidentally takes full backup in the middle of day with out 'copy only',
    log sequence will break and successive log backups depend on this full back up.
    while this should be prevented from happening in first place, you can still restore from native full backup and then apply log backups taken from third party taken after the  native Full backup.
    if this happens, I would restore the FULLBACKP with NORECOVERY using NATIVE SQL and then use  lite speed syntax to restore the log backups.Remember, native sql cannot read third party formatted backups(atleast litespeed), thats why I restore the full backup
    using native sql, since it was taken with native sql backup and log backups using litespeed syntax.
    Hope it Helps!!
    Thanks, well it was just a theory discussion we had about the issue. But none of us could find info on the internet easy to prove our point :) Thanks.

  • Will Oracle9i Dataguard broker work with Oracle10g Grid control ?

    Hello all,
    I have recently configured Oracle9i dataguard using Dataguard broker and it's currently working fine but I am not sure if this could be managed with Oracle10g Grid control as it does for Oracle10g dataguard (i.e. Switch-over, Protection mode switching and so on ..)
    I would appreciate if anyone could enlighten me further on this as I have not been able to find any proper document to provide me with the appropriate answer .
    Thanks..

    Ram,
    For your JBCL questions:
    JBCL 2.0 WILL be included in the production release of JDeveloper
    2.0, but will not be visible on the palette by default. You can
    add it back in if you really want to use JBCL.
    For more info on this decision and why we are recommending Swing,
    over JBCL see the post titled 'Which Oracle JDeveloper 2 GUI Lib
    for database access' dated March 26. It includes plenty of
    detail.
    As for your gridControl question:
    You can use a picklist with a gridcontrol, but there's not an
    'automatic' way to do it (i.e. via the properties sheet). You
    need to create a new rowsetinfo object that contains your query
    for the picklist. Then bind this rowsetinfo object to a Swing
    list control or combobox control. Finally, you need to hook the
    list control to the cell of the grid you want the list to appear
    in.

  • Dbstart and dbshut scripts in Dataguard Oracle 11g

    Hi there,
    I have been testing/learning dataguard with physical standby and 1 observer. To that end, was wondering if anyone has modified their dbstart script to
    start the db instance as primary or physical standby depending on their status before the host was rebooted.
    If it was one instance, it was no big deal at all, but we have 8 prod instances that will be in DG env, so that is why this post.
    Any hints/tips are greatly appreciated. I
    have already downloaded a script (.sql), but that is for earlier version.
    best regards,

    Hello;
    Looks like Oracle Restart might be a good solution. There's a good intro here :
    http://gavinsoorma.com/2009/10/11g-release-2-oracle-restart/
    The Database Administrator's Guide has additional information E10595-04
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E14072_01/server.112/e10595/restart001.htm
    Check out the section "Oracle Restart Integration with Oracle Data Guard"

  • Latency in dataguard !!!

    Hi ,
    How can I get the time it takes (latency) for the primary instance to get an archive log over to the physical standby instance and get it "archived" and "applied".
    Any ideas on how I can get the latency info I'm looking for?
    is latency value should be defined for dataguard?
    Thanks
    JP

    You can use ping to check latency.
    Below is an example i found from IBM.
    During the process, ping can monitor the time it takes to send and receive the response, which can be an effective method of measuring the response time of the echo process. In the simplest form, you can send an echo request to a host and find out the response time
    Listing 1. Using ping to determine latency
    $ ping example
    PING example.example.pri (192.168.0.2): 56 data bytes
    64 bytes from 192.168.0.2: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=0.169 ms
    64 bytes from 192.168.0.2: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.167 ms
    ^C
    --- example.example.pri ping statistics ---
    2 packets transmitted, 2 packets received, 0% packet loss
    round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 0.167/0.168/0.169/0.001 ms
    On Solaris and AIX®, you need to use the -s option to send more than one echo packet and get the timing information. For getting baseline figures, you can use the -c option (on Linux®) to specify the count. On Solaris/AIX, you must specify the packet size (the default is 56 bytes), and the number of packets to send so that you do not have to manually terminate the process. You can then use this to extract the timing information automatically (see Listing 2).
    Listing 2. Specifying the packet size when using ping on Solaris/AIX
    $ ping -s example 56 10
    PING example: 56 data bytes
    64 bytes from example.example.pri (192.168.0.2): icmp_seq=0. time=0.143 ms
    64 bytes from example.example.pri (192.168.0.2): icmp_seq=1. time=0.163 ms

  • Delete Archive Logs In Dataguard Environment

    Hi YFA,
    I'm facing a FI, in my DG environrmnt :
    OS : Solaris 5.10
    Oracle : 10.2.0.4
    I've this env :
    Prod >>> Prod_DG
    In my rman shell svcript that delete archivelogs I make a "Delete Input" after Backup,
    but
    I fear that the archivelog are deleted without being applied in the dataguard Database.
    Does anyone has find a workarround? or does it exist a parameter in RMAN to bypass this ?
