Dataguard Queston?
Presently we have two schemas on a "development" database that developrs use for their work, we back this database up nightly using a cron job that launches EXP full=Y.
They want to keep a "hot copy" of these just two schemas only on another database on another server (actually different brand of machine and different O/S, same version of Oracle 10.2.0.3) The target machine has a limitation on max_filesize (2GB) that will not accomdate the *.dmp file...no problem we merely run the import using fromuser/touser from the source machine across the network on a schedule.
I have read the Dataguard doc and the concept of "logical standby" seems appealing in this context, the standby is more or less always up to date and would require less effort to switch the developrs over in the event of a failure on the primary or even to offload potetially time consuming tasks to the standby.
The question...
Is it possible to limit this logical standby to only the two of the schemas of interest on the primary and avoid any interference with other schemas either on the primary or standby?

nullHi
Thanks everybody for helping me on this issue...........
As suggested, I had taken the parameter log_file_name_convert and db_file_name_convert out of my RAC primary database but still I am getting the same error.
Any help will be appriciated..............

Hi everybody!
I have a problem. Some weeks ago I opened a post related to this issue. We have two dataguards with dataguard broker. One of them is resync (thanks to mseberg and this forum) and now I have problems with the other.
Once I have learned how to configure and start/stop dataguard broker, I have a more basic problem, which is to resync it. I follow a process, where I backup the primary with RMAN, I copy the rman files to the other server with the controlfile, at once, I recover with rman again.
The problem is that it is too big, 2 hours for backing it up more or less, and when I restore it, no archivelog list appears being syncronized.
I have followed the same process than the other one and I can't resync it. I think there is something at my params or something new at 11g version...

I have quick couple of questions on dataguard.
1) how much time time it will take to generate (move ) the logfiles from production to standby database ?
2) Can we speed up the transfer the logfile from PROD to Standby?
3) If 2nd Questions is YES. How can i speed up the process?
In IBM DB2 its just 30 Sec max to replicate the data from PROD to STANDBY. Becasue we dont want to loose the data for a while.
Thanks

Assuming that it is 10g R2, the following white paper has all the answers you need:

5 Dataguard questions on implementation and maintainence
I have created Oracle10g Dataguard Physical standby. Everything seems to working properly. I switch a log@primary and i see it applied at standby. In OEM the Primary instance is shown as "Primary" and Dataguard Normal.
Questions
=======
1.I used cold backup to create physical standby where i copied just the datafiles. I DID NOT copy the online logfiles from primary DB . Is this ok?
Reason i am asking is, I am seeing this in alertlog (Please see in Bold below). Could this message in alert be ignored?
Fri Mar 14 16:11:55 2008

2. Physical standby was created in default mode " MAX PERFORMANCE" but i followed the manual and i realize i created standby redo logs at primary DB.
Is it true we do not need standby redo logs for MAX PERFORMANCE mode?
3. What is the quickest way to create a physical standby taking into consideration the downtime of the primary database.
4. Can we setup Dataguard for a live running production database (assuming prod is all set with prepare steps as laid out in manual) without downtime.
5. I hear dataguard management involves lot of shell scripting for log shipping, failover, switchover etc. Looking at 10g manual all these appear to be handled automatically if configured. Is it true that all the Dataguard functionality is auto and does not need shell scripting?
These are the things came up to mind. Please list any others you can think of for a Dataguard implementation. Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks and have a great time.
S~My question is , I havent created either online logfiles or standby log files on the secondary database, then how is RFS process applying the logs to the standby database?
If you do not create standby log files on the secondary database, then RFS process will apply logs from primary DB's archieved redo logs, refer 5.1 Introduction to Redo Transport Services.(http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14239/log_transport.htm)
Also i see entries in v$log@standby, since i haven't created log files@standby where is this info getting from?
It will be through the entry in Stndby DB parameter file "LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT=
'/arch1/chicago/','/arch1/boston/','/arch2/chicago/','/arch2/boston/'

SCN can be differ in standby and it can be behind to primary based on the backup you have restored. Of course by performing recovery you can synchronize standby with primary database. You can use incremental backups for standby using link http://www.oracle-ckpt.com/rman-incremental-backups-to-roll-forward-a-physical-standby-database-2/

How to configure oracle dataguard for connecting to the second nic.
hi
i want deploy my oracle dataguard on a remote site on a separate lease line
and on the second nic of the primary. i just have a concern that what
configurations should be made in the primary or standby to make sure the replication can work as the first nic is connected to receive the general database
data and the second nic is being planned for replication only.
so how standby will come to know that it has to pick which one of then.
waiting for an early reply
manish lall
[email protected]thanks for the reply
does that mean nothing is to be needed to configure for oracle standby as such.
can you give me some idea of how this ip routing configuration will be done -

9.2.0.6 DataGuard - how to "break" replication, make standby "standalone"
Hi All,
I have an existing 9.2.0.6.0 DataGuard environment, where currently I just have one primary and one physical standby database. I am planning to add in another physical standby database, but then at some point, I want to "break" the dataguard replication to this one, and basically take it out of the DataGuard environment, and have it run as a standalone database. I am not talking about putting it into "open read-only" mode, I want to completely remove it from the DataGuard replication, and have it up and running as a standalone db. Is that even possible? I don't see anything mentioned about this in the official DataGuard documentation.
If anyone has any thoughts on the best way to do this, I'd really appreciate it!!
Thanks,
BradActually, both... here is my potential plan:
1. Put a copy of the production database onto the new hardware, and instantiate it into the DataGuard configuration as a new physical standby database.
2. "Break" the dataguard replication, so that the new database on the new hardware becomes a standalone database, separate from DataGuard. At this point, we can test out some of the application against this database. The testing could last up to a few weeks.
3. Once we are happy with the testing, then we need to re-create this database as a backup from production, and get it back into the DataGuard replication as a standby. When it is time to cutover the production system, then we do a DataGuard Switchover, so that the database on the new hardware becomes the new primary database, replicating out.
Does that sound feasible? I think I can take care of all of those steps, the only one that I don't really know how to do is step 2, where we "break" the dataguard replication, and bring up the database on the new hardware as a fully stand-alone db.
Thanks,
Brad -
Oracle 10gR2 RAC / Dataguard on Linux Redhat 4.2 X86_64 and ASM / OCFS2
Hi All,
Well don't know if this is bleeding edge or not, but wanted to know if anybody has a system running the following setup and if there are any issues like some components are not certified on 64 bit (e.g is OCFS2)
We are in process of building a system with
Oracle RAC on 10gR2 on a 64 bit Linux OS 4.2 (2.6.9-22.ELsmp)
The system has a EMC CX500 and we are going to use ASM for the datafiles and OCFS2 for the Voting Disk and OCR.
We are also going to have a single (no RAC) Physical Dataguard instance at another site also using ASM.
We have seen that the OEM Grid Controller and agents are not supplied on x86_64
so we can't use it in a 64bit environment. (are we correct)
Anybody with suggested alternatives with the kit we have or a strong suggestion that 32 bit for RAC and Dataguard are best
Thanks in advance
JohnI have a similar configuration, 3 nodes of SunFire X4100 (dual opteron), on RedHat 4 ES Update 2 using Dell/EMC CX300.
I am using OCFS2 for data and voting disks.
We had a couple of freeze-up (total node lockup) and I could not figure out what was wrong (this happens randomly).
Anybody have any idea where should I look for possible reasons? -
Oracle 9i database software upgrade issue with standby (Dataguard) database
All,
I have encountered a problem in upgrading the Oracle software on 2 of our databases in-house. The databases in question here are using Dataguard, so one is set to primary and one is set to standby. The version that they are/were starting at is 9.2.0.7.
I was able to install and complete the 9.2.0.8 and 9.2.0.8 OCT CPU patches on the primary database, however when I moved to working on the standby database, I am got an error when attempting to follow step 6 of the post installation tasks:
Enter the following SQL*Plus commands:
SQL> STARTUP MIGRATE
SQL> SPOOL patch.log
SQL> @ORACLE_BASE\ORACLE_HOME\rdbms\admin\catpatch.sql
SQL> SPOOL OFF
(Please note that this is my first experience with working with Dataguard, so my methods in updating might have been a bit off-base.)
If I attempt to startup the standby database in MIGRADE mode, I get the following error (which is expected):
ORA-01666: controlfile is for a standby database
If I try to run the catpatch.sql script, even after mounting the database in standby mode, I receive the additional error:
ORA-01219: database not open: queries allowed on fixed tables/views only
My question here is, how do I get the standby database to allow me to finish the software upgrade process, so that both versions of Oracle match on the primary and standby databases? :)
(I did try some research on Metalink, but only found an article detailing how to upgrade your dataguard database from 9i to 10g, which did not look especially helpful in this case...)
Thank you!
-SabrinaDepending on the kind of Dataguard you currently have, physical or logical, there are two useful metalinks notes:
Upgrading to 10g with a Physical Standby in Place
Doc ID: Note:278521.1
Upgrading to 10g with a Logical Standby in Place

Could any one please shed some lights on finding the reason for this issue ?It's been interesting, The job runs only on ADG?
Even it is only reporting purposes, Which runs only select statements. Are you sure that issue is only because of this job?
Moreover am interested to know, How you able to monitor at the same time? Using EM?
What all are the jobs ran on primary at the same time?
Then, is it possible to run the job on primary and see whats the response?
I suggest you to run the same job again on standby and see the ET of the job and also gather the statspack to check whether you got same buffer busy waits or not.
What storage you are using for primary and standby? In terms of I/O and performance all are same?
You got chance to take statspack even on primary database?
What are the parameters differ in primary and standby?
Also check this note, Heresome work around provided.
