Datasocket localhost faster than network name

When I set my datasocket urls to dstp://localhost/var instead of dstp://machine_name/var the various connections are made MUCH faster. When using localhost, all variables seem to connect instantly, while if I use machine_name instead, it seems to make about 1 connection per second (I'm just watching the led indicator change to green) and so if I have a bunch of variables connecting, it can take quite awhile. I can use localhost on the server machine, however I need to be able to make fast connections on the client machine, and so I have to use machine_name. Is this some inherrent flaw in datasocket? Is there a workaround, or could I have a poor network driver?

"Localhost" does not require any name resolution...it is a "builtin" name in a windows environment. A "real" machine name requires name resolution,which always requires some time. You might try assigning your own machine as the name resolver. (YOu might need to poke around to see what machine on your network is really performing the name resolution.)
Alternatively, use the IP address instead of the machine name.

I've written an inter-application script that moves from InDesign, where it starts in AppleScript, to Photoshop, where the AppleScript runs a JavaScript to perform various tasks.
It runs beautifully on my laptop at home where I do my development. Yesterday, using myself as guinea pig, I tried it in the office.
On about the third run, I was horrified to see the ExtendScript Toolkit pop up with an error message (about as welcome as seeing an AppleScript inviting the user to open the Script Editor and fix a script).
The error message was that app.bringToFront(); was not a valid function.
This was true in InDesign, which has a different activation function, and I realised that even though my AppleScript had called for Photoshop to activate I was still in InDesign.
The JavaScript app.bringToFront had been called as well because I had enclosed my code in the Tranberry template.
So I pressed the stop button on ExtendScript, went back to InDesign and ran the script again. This time it worked as usual.
Occasionally on our network we spend some time beachball-watching as some communication goes on in the background. So I imagine that the time the error was thrown was on one of those network slowdowns.
The switch from InDesign to Photoshop did not happen fast enough, but the script ran on and issued a Photoshop JavaScript command while I was still in InDesign.
In AppleScript such unfortunate communication with users can be avoided using "try... on error" blocks.
Would there be any error-handling equivalent in JavaScript which would enable me to avoid them being thrown into ExtendScript Toolbox and would give them a friendly message apologising, explaining what had happened and inviting them to try again?

Also AppleScript has a default timeout of 60 seconds before it wants to execute its next command. If in you case the opening and processing of the image in JavaScript takes any longer than this wrap your call out to Photoshop in a timeout block thus extending the alloted time to whatever you think may be suitable? Like so:

Yes, but be sure that the drive is formatted correctly for Mac in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

Very slow network performance - with uploads faster than downloads

I just got new ISP - 100 mbps through a Cat5 line. It checks out when I run ethernet directly to a computer. However, I want a totally wireless network.
I have a Time Capsule attached by ethernet and that is my main network device. I also have two airport Xpress' to extend the network.
I am getting, on average, 16 mbps! And, upload speed is generally higher.
The Time Capsule is about 2 yrs old, but it is an "n" device.
Anybody have any idea what the problem might be? I was considering getting a new extreme and using the Time Capsule as an extender instead of the expresses because, as I understand it, the express has one band only. Would that be better? Mainly, I want to get the speed up to what it should be.
Is there some way to trouble shoot the Time Capsule?
Others in my building with D Link or Linksys routers are getting over 80 mbps wirelessly, so I know it is possible.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I want to stay with Apple products, but if not possible I will get another brand of router.

That makes sense, if they're configured to extend an existing network. They must communicate on the same channel as the base station they're extending.

Can iphone with vodafone network unlocked faster than two days?

Nobody can help. Vodafone are the only people who can initiate the unlock. If they say it takes 2 days, that's how long it takes.

I have a weird situation. I am using both iMac and Dell laptop. I use AEBS a1s a bridge - AT & T installed a wireless router and one hard line, and I plug my AEBS on the hard line. Dell is connected to AT&T router (and then to AEBS through hard ethernet line) with 801g. I connect my iMac to AEBS with 801n. I also attach a USB printer and 500G external HDD to AEBS. I formatted HDD with FAT32.
In terms of iMac, everything is working fine; I can print, I can read (or play) the files in Airdisk, and I can write (or copy) the files on Airdisk. No problem.
Dell laptop is a problem. Good things: I can print to the USB printer plugged in AEBS. I can read/play files stored in Airdisk. BAD THINGS: Every time I try to copy a file(s) to the HDD plugged in Airdisk, this error message appears: "the specified network name is no longer available"
If I cannot see the Airdisk at all, or cannot print any documents to AEBS-connected printer, then I may believe the network problem. Well, I can print a paper, I can read/play files in the HDD, but I cannot copy a file to the HDD! The size is less than 400MB, so the size should not be a matter.
I called Apple Tech Support, and they have kept me waiting for 32 minutes (and counting - now is 5:50pm PST - 10 minutes to go!). I have searched Apple discussion, Google, whatever, in vain.
Please share any tips with me. My iMac is run by Leopard, and I have Win XP SP3 for my Dell; Airport Utility is 5.3.2.

I solved the problem in this way: i had the hard disk and the printer connected to a usb hub. I tried to directly connect the hard disk to my airport and everything was ok! Now I can copy files without any problem...

Failover Cluster Network Name Failed and Can't be Repaired

I have an issue that seem to be a different problem than any others have encountered.
I've scoured everything I can find and nothing has fixed my problem.
The problem starts with the common problem of the cluster network name failing on my 2 node server 2012 file server cluster. The computer object was still in AD and appeared to be fine so it was not the common problem of the object
getting deleted somehow. At the time, there was no other object with that name in the recycling bin, so I don't think it was mistakenly deleted and quickly recreated to cover any tracks, so to speak.
Following one guide, I tried to find the registry key that corresponded with the GUID of the object, but neither node in the cluster had it in its registry (which may be part of the problem).
Since it was in the failed state, I tried to do the repair on the object to no avail.
We run a "locked down" DC environment so all computer objects have to be pre-provisioned. They were all pre-provisioned successfully and successfully assigned during cluster creation. The cluster was running with no issues for a month
or so before this problem came up.
When I do a repair on the object while taking diagnostic logs the following 4609 error appears:
The action 'Repair' did not complete. - System.ApplicationException: An error occurred resetting the password for 'Cluster Name'. ---> System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: Unknown error (0x80005000)
There appears to be a corresponding 4771 error with a failure code 0x18 that comes from the security log of the DC that states there was a Kerberos pre-authentication failure for the cluster network name object (Domain\Clustername$)
I believe this is what is causing the repair failure. All the information I found related to security error 4771 was either a bad credentials given for a user account or the fix was to reconnect the computer to the domain. I can't seem to find
a way to do this with the cluster network name. If there's a way please let me know.
I've tried a number of things, like resetting the object, disabling it, deleting and creating a new object with the same name, deleting that new object and recovering the original, etc...
Can anyone shed some light on what is going on and hopefully how to fix it other than rebuilding the cluster? I'm quite close to just tearing it down and building it back up but am hesitant because this cluster in currently in production...

I don’t find out the similar issue with yours, base on my experience, the 4096 error
often caused by the CSV disk issue, and the 0x80005000 error some time caused by the repetitive computer object in OU. Please check the above related part or run the validate test then post the error information.
Although I do have a CSV, there doesn't seem to be any problems with it and it was running just fine for a month or so before the problem started. I double checked and there is no duplicate computer objects, maybe I don't understand what you mean by
repetitive, could you explain further?
The cluster validates successfully with a few warnings:
Validating cluster resource Name: DT-FileCluster.
This resource is marked with a state of 'Failed' instead of
'Online'. This failed state indicates that the resource had a problem either
coming online or had a failure while it was online. The event logs and cluster
logs may have information that is helpful in identifying the cause of the
failure.
- This is because the cluster name is in the failed state
Validating the service principal names for Name:
DT-FileCluster.
The network name Name: DT-FileCluster does not have a valid
value for the read-only property 'ObjectGUID'. To validate the service principal
name the read-only private property 'ObjectGuid' must have a valid value. To
correct this issue make sure that the network name has been brought online at
least once. If this does not correct this issue you will need to delete the
network name and re-create it.
- This is definitely related to the problem and the GUID probably got removed when we attempted a fix by resetting the object and trying the repair from the failover cluster manager.
The user running validate, does not have permissions to create
computer objects in the 'ad.unlv.edu' domain.
- This is correct, we run a restricted domain. I have a delegated OU that I can pre-provision accounts in. The account was pro-provisioned successfully and was at one point setup and working just fine.
There are no other errors nor warnings.

I've already did try to create there various profiles but no luck. Even when I try 'Join other network' and select 'Show networks' I don't get my corporate network on the list. Maybe it's hidden. Where I can see a Log what's going on?

How can I get tracks to play faster than normal speed in itunes?

I have lectures, audio books, and other recordings that I would like to play at faster than normal speed (like 1.5X or 2X normal speed).   I've set all of these recordings as audio books because I read that they have the option to play faster, but, I can't find how to actually make them play faster. I also read that it's possible to open them in quicktime, but that is very much less than ideal and a waste of time. Surely there is a way to do this in itunes, but I can't figure it out.

I will show you how I played my audio or mp3 files at any particular speed. This method will allow you to simply enter in your desired speed.(ex. 1.5 or 1.33)
In my case Im using an audio book [Lord of the flies] I download off youtube as a MP3 file using this program:

      First off, you will need to make sure your audio file is open in QuickTime player rather then iTunes. First you need to locate the audio file. If your audio file is in itunes then right click the file and select "Show in Finder"
     The file should open in a finder window, highlighted. Right click the file, go to "Open With.." And click Quicktime Player. (If quickTime Player is not an option, you need to go to "Other..." and select QuickTime Player from your Applications folder)
Now that your mp3 file is open in a QuickTime window you may proceed to step 1.
1) Open Finder
2) Click Applications
3) Click Utilities
4) Open AppleScript Editor
5) In the program copy and paste the script below.
6) Click "Compile"
7) Now to test this script, click "Run" A window should pop up prompting you to enter your desired speed (default is 1.5)
8) press "OK" and quick time should start playing your audio at the speed you entered in.

WebDav using https fails with network name cannot be found.

When I attempt to connect to a Webdav server from a Windows 8.1 box it fails with
System Error 67 has occurred.
The network name cannot be found.
I am using the net.exe USE command with the following syntax:
net.exe use Z: https://dav.DomainYaya.com/ <PASSWORD> /user:USERNAME
This exact syntax works for Windows 7.
I have more than one Windows 8.1 box where this fails.
There are various suggestions found all over the internet for various other situations. They do not apply or do not work.
For example, you will find an issue involving sending Basic authentication over http where there are suggestions about changing HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\WebClient\Parameters
That does not work. There is also discussion about the Webclient service. (it is running). One can find discussion of the redirector. (The SYS file is present and is installed with Windows 8+ anyway.)
Using HTTP only fails similarly but with error 53 (but I only did that as a test.) The issue is the HTTPS version.
I have BTW tried this with two different webdav servers.

Based on our research, the error 67 have the following several possable causes:
•IIS is not installed or is not running on the server that you are attempting to connect to.
•You have not installed the WebDAV Redirector on your client system.
•The WebClient service is not running on your client system.
•You have not enabled WebDAV on your web site.
•You are using Basic Authentication and connecting to your web site using HTTP instead of HTTPS.
•You are connecting to a web site on your local network that is using Fully-Qualified Domain Names (FQDNs) for name resolution, your web site uses Windows Authentication, and you have not added the web site's FQDN to the proxy server bypass list on your client.

According to the test, I am able to reproduce this issue in my lab. By default, the Webclient service is not running on windows 8.1 client. But for windows 7 client this service is running by default.
So please try to start the WebClient service on windows 8.1 client to check if it helps.

How do i get a network name? HOSTNAME=... doesn't work anymore

Hi,
I'm sure this question sounds very n00by, but this used to be working just fine in archlinux by setting the hostname variable and that was the network name as well. No issue and worked like a charme. However, i reinstalled my system and i got the (unpleasant) surprise of a lot of changes.
So, what's the "new" equivalent of HOSTNAME="pc-name" so that it works on the network again? I'm using just the default stock network stuff but with a static ip, no special things.
Right now i do have my hostname set in rc.conf but i can't ping my machine by that name. No, nothing in the local network changed. It really is only a reinstall of a local machine.

And do you have a nameserver in /etc/resolv.conf?
If none of this works, can you try using dhcp in your rc.conf just to make sure it's a config problem?

I tried your suggestions and using dhcp it works partly.
This is my static config:
interface=eth0
address=192.168.1.99
netmask=255.255.255.0
broadcast=192.168.1.255
gateway=192.168.1.2
When i use dhcp (so comment out the lines except interface=eth0) then i do get the name assigned, but i can't ping the pc or access it by name. I can by ip.
If you have more suggestions, please do share

Why is my MacBook downloading faster than my new Imac?

I have a two year old Macbook; 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM with about 30GB left of memory. I also just purchased, from apple, a 27" Imac; 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 with 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3. and have just under 850GB left. The Macbook is running on 10.5.8 and the Imac is on 10.6.3.
My issue is that when i download/stream video to my Imac it takes a substantial amount of time. I love to watch movies, tv shows, ect, on my Imac. I was disappointed by how slow the downloads would take. So I set up my macbook right in front of the Imac to compare the speeds. I went to the Movie Trailers section on apple.com and I clicked on The Last Airbender 1080p (149MB) at the same time for both computers (on WiFi of the same network). My macbook finished the download 5 minutes faster than the Imac. I then tried the 42MB version with a minute difference with the Macbook. I then went to youtube and it was almost the same speed. I tried Itunes and it was about the same speed as well. I then did an internet speed test with both and got these results:
Macbook: Download 18.45Mb/s, Upload 2.28Mb/s, Ping 93
IMac: Download 20.88Mb/s, Upload 2.3Mb/s, Ping 89
I don't know if any of this information helps or if anyone will even read this far but the apple store is extremely far from my house and would try almost anything to fix this issue. My questions are:
1) Is this a known issue that has a fix, if so how do i fix it?
2) Is this possibly a faulty computer that i would have to return?
3) Is this the way it's supposed to operate and if I don't like it take it back

You may also want to check your router. Some routers use a priority bandwidth feature that will dedicate more bandwidth to one machine. If for some reason the macbook's download was started earlier than the imac's, then this might be part of the discrepancy. There are a lot of factors to think about when it comes to wifi bandwidth.
I do agree with the one comment about testing one computer at a time instead of simultaneously.
Also, when you said you have the movies from the Macbook on your iMac, can you elaborate? If you are using a shared library, then your iMac is going to be using part of your download speed for updates to your shared itunes library, where your Macbook is only going to be uploading the list. If I am incorrect in my understanding of the sharing of iTunes library, someone please let me know.

Why would oracle 9i drivers faster than oracle 10g drivers against a 10g?

I'm skeptical of the claim but we have a system at work and tests have been done that apparently is showing that the older oracle 9i thin jdbc driver is performing a fetch faster than the 10g driver. This for a query that is currently doing a full table scan.
Is there a default setting in 10g vs 9i that can explain why the perceived query performance is faster with the older thin driver?

I did a simple test over the weekend and want to share with
u. "SQL7 is Faster than Oracle8051 by 60% in my little test".
Perhape somebody can point out what I had not setup correctly.
one same PC installed with multi boot:
Microsoft platform

JDBC from SQL7 installation
Linux Oracle Platform

RedHat linux 5.2
Oracle8051EE
jdk1.1.7A
jdbc ( oci ) from Oracle8051EE installation
I used identical Java program ( almost identical, except the
connection string) to insert 100,000 record into both platform(
one platform at a time). The table has 2 fields ( on NT name
varchar(50) and Address varchar(1024). On Oracle, is varchar2
with the same size ). No index is created in both platform. And
Linux Oracle took 32 minutes, NT SQL7 took only 13 minutes.
I were hoping that it is the different version of JDK that
contribute to the compareingly slowness in Linux Oracle.
Any one else can share some light ?

please don'feel offended, but I think the problem with these
sort of benchmarks are:
a. It's not obvious the servers (in both cases) are optimally
tuned for the task to be done
b. The task is far too simple to state that SQL7 is 60% faster
than ORACLE 8
c. I don't know any installation where inserting 100000 rows
is the main business for the DBMS installed. Normally there's
a mix of about 85% selecting and 15% writing data (these
percentages may differ for your installation). So if you
want to test the performance of a DBMS, a bit of selecting
data wouldn't harm your benchmark
d. You did a single user benchmark (I assume). An important
issue is the behaviour of a system under multi-user load.
(NT is very strong at this point ;-)
e. The outcome of these benchmarks is irrelevant (see above)
but the psychological effect isn't ! It is the kind of
messages salesmen sprinkle around. A lot of hot air but
nothing behind it.
without wanting to be offensive, I think the correct title for
your message should have been:
I managed to configure an SQL7 and an ORACLE 8 in such way, that
an insert-job of 100000 rows is about 60% faster on the SQL7
engine. (I admit, this doesn't sound very spectacular)
