DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT and LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT and Data Guard

Can somebody give me an example of when DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT and LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT would not be set?
Assume the following:
Oracle 11 R2
Location of the datafiles are the on both servers
Physical Standby Server (One only)
Archive in FRA

You don't set if you have something like db_create_file_dest=whatever in your init file...then by default all files go there.
Another way not to use them is to set newname or set auxname in rman...but the easiest is db_create_file_dest in your init file

  • RMAN and 11g Active Data Guard

I just build my first 11g Active Data Guard . . . well the next thing to do is the RMAN part.
At this point I want to know:
    A) How/What do you query to know that a log has been applied on the Standby side
    B) How does RMAN know what has been applied
    C) If I do the RMAN backup on the Standby side, won't there always be some difference because there is always some delay between the Primary and Standby?

I presume you mean using RMAN to delete archive logs? If the log hasnt been shipped and applied to the standby yet RMAN wont remove it, instead it outputs the following error:
RMAN-08137: WARNING: archive log not deleted as it is still needed
Until the log has been applied on the standby, this intelligence is built in at 11G (at 10G you needed an "_" parameter to get this working).
    Thanks

  • Oracle data guard configuration for primary and standby db_name

I am working on configuring an active data guard for one primary DB and one standby DB. I have a few questions:
    1. Can I use different db_name, db_unique_name and instance_name for primary and standby. For example: primary(db_name, db_unique_name and instance_name)=chicago. When I create standby DB with Rman backup and copy of pfile and control file from primary DB or use Grid control to create standby database. Oracle document or Grid control all keep standby db_name=chicago. Only make standby db_unique_name and instance_name=boston. Due to my application system condition, I want to make db_name=boston, not keep it as the same as primary=chicago. Is this valid configuration?
    2. In primary datafiles, application system generate datafile name like this: hr_chicago_01.dbf, fn_chicago_01.dbf. When I move datafiles to standby server, if I plan to use db_name=boston for standby DB, can I rename datafiles as
hr_boston_01.dbf, fn_boston_01.dbf? In this way, datafile name match up with db_name. but I will create standby log group and members on primary and standby identically. If in future switching over, DB will not have problems.
    3. If I don't use primary DB backup. Instead, I copy all datafiles, redo_log files (no control files) to standby. Then "alter database backup controlfile to trace" from promary and also " create pfile='/xxx/initSTANDBY.ora' from primary. Then modify init.ora and controlfile. Then run control.sql to bring standby DB up. After that, configure redo log shipping and apply with data guard or SQL. Is this a acceptable way to create physical standby DB?
Please advise your comments. Thanks in advance.

I want to make db_name=boston, not keep it as the same as primary=chicago. Is this valid configuration?NO. DB_NAME must be the same ("chicago") at both sites. The Standby will be using a different DB_UNIQUE_NAME (e.g. "boston") and can be using a different Instance name / SID (e.g. "boston").
can I rename datafiles Yes. The database file names can be changed.
If I don't use primary DB backup. Instead, I copy all datafiles, redo_log files (no control files) to standbyWhat is the difference between the first sentence (a backup of the primary) and the second sentence (a copy of the primary) ? A Copy is a backup.
Are you intending to differentiate between an RMAN Backup and a User-Managed (aka "scripted") backup ?
Normally, for DataGuard, tou can use non-RMAN methods to copy the database but there's no value add in this.
You'd still have to setup DataGuard ! (and I wonder if you'd have complications setting up Active DataGuard).
But remember that you MUST create the Standby controlfile from the Primary and copy it over to your Standby -- particularly as you are planning to use DataGuard. This is not created by 'alter database backup controlfile to trace' , but by 'ALTER DATABASE CREATE STANDBY CONTROLFILE AS 'filename''

  • Difference between physical standby database and Data Guard

    Hi guys,
Today I attended one interview. They asked me a difference between the Oracle Physical Standby database and Oracle Dataguard?
Upto my knowledge Oracle Physical Standby Database is one type of Standby Database can be configured using Oracle Databaguard Feature.
Can you people calrify me on this.

    hello,
yes you are right upto some extent...here is para form oracle doc
Oracle Data Guard is the most effective and comprehensive
data availability, data protection, and disaster recovery solution
for enterprise databases. It provides the management, monitoring,
and automation software infrastructure to create and maintain one
or more synchronized standby databases to protect data from failures,
    disasters, errors, and corruptions.
Data Guard standby databases can be located at remote disaster
recovery sites thousands of miles away from the production data center,
or they may be located in the same city, same campus,
or even in the same building. If the production database
becomes unavailable because of a planned or an unplanned outage,
Data Guard can switch any standby database to the production role,
thus minimizing downtime and preventing any data loss.oracle data guard is maximum availiblity solution which maintain physical standby databases and in case of failure of production can switch production role to and standby database.

  • Database issues after starting data guard

Hi. We run OEM12c in Linux. All is working well and we monitor several targets and DBs.
In our QA db server, sun solaris 11 running oracle 10g, we started to test data guard configuration for several instances we are running there. our standy server is called STDBY. All works fine, but now we have a problem managing some aspects of data guard with OEM12c.
First problem is that the instances appear as SID_IPaddress of server, as opposed as DB_UNIQUENAME.DB_DOMAIN. curiously enough, the std by copy, appears correctly (SID_sbyp.db_domain)... This is very puzzling...
Second problem is when we try to access the Data Guard performance pane, it fails showing (both in primary and secondary DBs)
Data Guard Internal Error : See the OMS log for details.
No clue where to look for this problem.
All other functions, TOP, performance home, etc... look fine.

    Hi ,
Regarding "Data Guard Internal Error : See the OMS log for details"
    Follow the below steps
On the Data Guard Page run the 'Verify Configuration'-Option twice. The first Execution will show an Output like
    Initializing
    Connected to instance test.oracle.com:mydb
    Starting alert log monitor...
Updating Data Guard link on database homepage...
WARNING: Broker name (mytest) and target name (mydb) do not match.
WARNING: The broker name will be renamed to match the target name.
Skipping verification of fast-start failover static services check.
    Data Protection Settings:
    Protection mode : Maximum Performance
    Redo Transport Mode settings:
    pnjpcep1: ASYNC
    cnjpcep1: ASYNC
Checking standby redo log files.....not checked due to broker name mismatch. Run verify again.
    Checking Data Guard status
    mydb : Normal
    my11g : Normal
Tthe second Execution does not show this Warning any more, ie. it got fixed during the first Execution. Now it's possible to access the Data Guard Performance Page without Errors and you can see the Statistics.

  • Oracle 11g Active Data Guard是怎么收费的?

    原来在Oracle 10g中,DG是免费使用的,想请问一下,在Oracle 11g中,性能得到加强的ADG是怎么收费的?谢谢

    FYI
Use customary EE Option License Practices
Active Data Guard license required if using either Real-time Query or RMAN block-change tracking on a standby
Example with primary and 5 separate standby databases
    S1 = physical - real-time query
    S2 = physical - real-time query + RMAN block change tracking
S3 = physical - RMAN block change tracking
S4 = physical - neither real-time query nor RMAN block change tracking
    S5 = logical
Active Data Guard must be licensed for primary and for S1, S2 and S3.
Active Data Guard is not relevant to logical standby

  • License Type Requirements To Use Data Guard For Oracle EE

    Hi,
I haven't been able to get a straight answer on this, so hopefully someone can help me.
We currently have two physical servers, both licensed to run Oracle Database 11gR2 EE, however one is running a cpu-based license (primary server/production) and the other is running a named-user based license (secondary server/soon-to-be-standby server).
I had no hand in selecting the license model, so this is what I have to work with. So the question is this: With this type of license model differences, can I use Oracle Data Guard?
Our Oracle software vendor says no because of the differences in the license models.
Any feedback would be invaluable. Thanks.

That is so because there is not much to say about it: You create your standby as described in the Data Guard doc (RMAN DUPLICATE)
Then you ship the Archivelogs to the standby and do recover database there. Technically easy. No higher protection mode possible, though.
I am no License Specialist, but I think that you will always need some kind of license for the standby database - even if you maintain it this way.
My recommendation would be to clarify with your company first what your Recovery Point Objective is - can you live with the probably high amount of data loss in case of Disaster on the Primary?
If not - purchase the correct license and continue with Data Guard Best Practices instead of doing a home grown solution.
    Security is not cheap.
    Kind regards

  • Veeam backup compared to Data Guard.

    Hello to all.
Our sysadmins are thinking about virtualization of Oracle servers to vmware and instead of Data Guard to use Veeam backup. Will it be optimal ? Some documents tell that OS snapshots, hardware replication etc. used on opened database can create inconsistent data.

    Hello;
You would be lucky if all you got with Veeam backup is inconsistent data.
Data Guard offers things a backup solution cannot :
Real Disaster Recovery since block are transferred via. a different mechanism, than the primary writes block.
Rolling Upgrade capability of OS (and special DB patches, not all).
Block corruption are automatically detected (and can even be automatically be resolved).
Read Only request and backup can be directed to the standby system to save system utilization on primary.
11.2 Active DataGuard will automatically do the RMAN block repair from the standby.
Has Oracle endorsed this backup solution?
Can your company tolerate ?? minutes of transactional data loss?
This would be my main push back.
    Best Regards

  • Need some low level help/info on Grid Control / Data Guard

I need to get some info concerning the set up and administration of Grid Control. In particular, I need to know why Grid Control needs to have the Oracle OS-Level username and password stored in Grid Control in order for GC to set up and manage a Data Guard database.
Is it because when the database is being created, GC issues commands like RMAN and SCP to put files onto the standby host?
Also, for accountability purposes, can I not use a named user account (with the same privs as the oracle user) saved as the preferred credential and still perform the necessary functions to use DG and GC together effectively.
Probably a lot of info and variables, and I've not explained much, but happy to explain further if needed.
    Thanks!
    Edited by: joe.bednarz on Oct 14, 2009 9:38 AM

Thanks for the input... we need to use another account other the "oracle" account so there is some accountability for who does what. If I create an account that has similar privileges as the oracle user, I can still run all things Oracle, while still having a log of my log in time and actions.
    More of security issue...
    Thanks again. Appreciate it!

  • How to setup a remote recovery process - Not using Data Guard?

    Hello -
Has anyone (or can send me some links) set up recovery at a remote site - and not used Data Guard? For example, shipped off logs via FTP, applied the logs, and kep the DB in recovery mode?
    Thanks!

    Mlike,
This manual procedure is described in the Dataguard Concepts manual for 10gR2, hopefully is this your unmentioned version (BTW what happens if you do type your version? Does your boss beats you up for doing that?). I don't know why someone wants to replace something robust by something unreliable by default, using FTP. Not only unreliable, also unsecure!

  • What is the major plus with Data Guard compare to standby

    Hi,
We don't need active active replication between our prod and DR, our DR can be 20 minutes RPO (Recovery Point Objective) so what is the main advantage of configuring and installing oracle data guard compare to a simple standby server?
My understanding of data guard is a that oracle will ship your log auto on the DR and apply it instead of me, doing it with 2 script (one on primary server that ship log over, the second on standby that apply the archive log).

    1. Your Primary site get hit by something you can failover to the standby.
    2. If you have a large group of "Reader" users on the Primary you can switch them to the Standby using Active Data Guard.
    3. You can do a switchover and avoid an outage if your Primary server needs work of any kind.
    4. You can preform backup at either site taking even more load off you primary if needed.
    or as the books says:
Disaster recovery, data protection, and high availability.
    Down Side
    1. Cost
    2. Network Load (or additional load)

  • DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT and LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT

    hello guys,
I am configuring a data guard with one physical standby on VMWARE.. with primary database on one system and physical standby on the other.. database 11g r2
oracle document says that the DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT and LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT has to mentioned if the directory structure is going to be different on both the sites.
directory structure on the primary database will be
    /u01/app/oracle/oradata/oracle/
    and on standby will be
    /u01/app/oracle/oradata/oracles/
now my question is do we have to set this parameter on the standby system (i use RMAN to create the standby using DUPLICATE command so it renames the filepath of all the datafiles on the standby system during duplication process.) or on the primary database tooo please tell me..
i believe the log_file_name_convert parameter need not be set as the RMAN will automatically create the logfiles. please tell me if i am correct..

Yes you need to set both the parameter..
these parameters will update the controlfile regarding locations of datafiles & log files. it is mandatory.. if you specify these parameters then only RMAN knows where these need to restore.
because we are using controlfile from primary database http://www.stanford.edu/dept/itss/docs/oracle/9i/server.920/a96536/ch144.htm

  • Data Guard: db_file_name_convert/log_file_name_convert when using ASM/OMF

    All,
I have a call currently open with Oracle regarding the setting of the parameters db_file_name_convert and log_file_name_convert in a data guard environment. We use ASM / OMF for storage and file naming and my question is basically do these parameters have to be set. The documentation says they do where the file structure is different between PRIMARY and STANDBY.
I have successfully tested failover and switchover without these parameters. I have also added a new tablespace on the PRIMARY and watched it create a new OMF datafile on standby when the logs are switched.
I just can't see a reason for setting them when using ASM / OMF.
I'm hoping someone can enlighten me here because I'm getting nowhere whith support. The following is our Data Guard setup:
    PRIMARY
    DB_NAME=IBSLIVE
    DB_UNIQUE_NAME=IBSLIVE
    ASM Disk Groups:
+PRODDATA (Data Files, Control Files, Redo Logs)
+PRODFLASH (Archive Logs, Flashback Logs, RMAN backups)
+PRODLOGS (Multiplexed Control & Redo Logs)
    STANDBY
    DB_NAME=IBSLIVE
    DB_UNIQUE_NAME=IBSDR
    ASM Disk Groups:
+DRDATA (Data Files, Control Files, Redo Logs)
+DRFLASH (Archive Logs, Flashback Logs, RMAN backups)
+DRREDO (Multiplexed Control & Redo Logs)
    Many Thanks,
    Ian.

    Ian,
    I'm having similar thoughts.
I have created a new instance with files in asm under +datadisk/obosact (this is the smae name as primary)
I then modify the db_unique_name from obosact to obosactdr as is required for standby to work
When I recover (duplicate target database for standby; ) I find that the files are in datadisk/obosactdr not in the datadisk/obosact area
    I found this reference http://www.oracle.com/technology/deploy/availability/pdf/MAA_WP_10g_RACPrimaryRACPhysicalStandby.pdf
    4. Connect to the ASM instance on one standby host, and create a directory within the DATA disk group that has the same name as the DB_UNIQUE_NAME of the standby database. For example: SQL> ALTER DISKGROUP data ADD DIRECTORY '+DATA/BOSTON';
This step seems to indicate that the location of the files is determined by the db_unique_name not the db_file_name_convert paramenter
DId you ever resolve the issue?
