  • Database disk/tape backup

    Hi,
Could someone help me as to weather the following is a plausable scenario.
-Lets say we have We have one database using ASM, ..
-Database is backed up to disk (+FRA) - regular intervals eacj day
-Database is then backed up to tape every 2 days
When the database is backed up to tape.. would it be normal to back up an entire copy of both the data disks and the FRA? or just the data disks? or just the backups currently on disk in the FRA?
High level (very simplistic) overview I know, but would appriciate any opinions
    Thanks

All you need to do is take the backup file from FRA to tape.

  • Full Database Backup in DB13 for MS SQL Server databases

    Hello,
We have some SAP systems using the MS SQL Server database. I want to know if it is possible to setup the Full Database Backup option in transaction DB13 to store the files in a hard disk space.
I already did this type of configuration in SAP systems in Oracle databases and for this I used the init<SID>.sap where we can put all the configuration, for instance the disk path where we want to save the backup files! But for MS SQL Server databases, in DB13, I don´t know how to do that, when I add the "Full Database Backup" option in DB13, this show me some options but only for tape, but I don´t want to store the backup files in tapes, I want to store/save the files on the server disk itself or else to an external disk but I don´t see where I can set this way of storage!
This is what you see in DB13 (when using a MS SQL Server database) in "Full Database Backup" and as you see I only have options for TAPE not for a disk or other type of storage! How can I do that? (if that is possible):
    Can you help me please?
    Kind regards,
    samid raif

    Hello Raja
Sorry for the delay of my answer! Many thanks for that tip, it helps a lot and it solve the last error/problem that I reported here, in fact, the problem was we had named the device with two words containing a space. So we removed that space from the backup device (in SQL management studio) with one word only and the job runs successfully without any errors!
It works in Development and Quality systems but in our Production system (AM1) the Full backup option in DB13 stopped with the following error, in fact the error is on verification of backup, it means that the Full backup finished with success, but when it does the backup verification, the job in DB13 stops with an error, the following one:

    Hi,
since you are getting a read error, it might as well be, that your datafile is defective.
Try the same dd-command to /dev/null, to see if it is possible to read the entire file.
First make sure that your null-device is existing, otherwise you might face a root-fs full problem.
    dd obs=1024K bs=1024K if=/oracle/ANP/sapdata2/sr3_9/sr3.data9 of=/dev/null
or try a dbverify on it, which would also read the entire file and do a checksum test.
    brbackup -c -u / -m /oracle/ANP/sapdata2/sr3_9/sr3.data9 -t online -w only_dbv
    Good luck

Due to this we are not able complete the BW Process tarnsfers... which is very important.....
We use DB13 for this activity.
The error mesage reads as follows

Sorry for posting twice, but the fact is that i missed out a point that the same is not case with BW prd server for which it is the same backup device we are using,
Also FYI both our BWDEV and BWPRD are in a single physical server, but running on different HDDs....
Now what is the next solution that i can suggest my client....
I m working on this from OFFSHORE....
so there depends a lot on the suggestion i give them...and i just dont want to misguide or suggest them with my HALF knowledge...
So can you plz focus a lil more into the explainaton u sent me, please.
    Waiting to hear from you,
and I thank you for your quick and helpful responce.

  • Whole database online + redo log backup

    Hello all,
we are running SAP on a Oracle Database and doing a daily backup.
In the DBA Planing Calendar, we do have the action
Whole database online + redo log backup
    What exactly does that mean?
    Thanks,
    Anne

This backup will save the CONTENT of the database only, not the database software itself.
To get a full consistent backup you need to backup more things if you want to have everything - depending on the operating system:
On Unix you will need to backup the software directory (/oracle*, oraInventory, oratab (depending on the location)) etc.
On Windows you will need to backup <letter>:\oracle, the registry keys and more things.
However, in case of a recovery you can also install the software after an OS installation and then restore it from tape.

  • Taking Backup on tape Getting Error

    Hi,
My production server is running with SuSE Linux 10 SP2 with DB2 9.7 database.
I have LTO4 tape drive directly connected to my Production server
I am able to take backup to disk but when I am trying to take backup to tape I am getting error as below.
    SRSPROD:shpadm 38> db2 backup database SHP to /dev/st0
SQL2031W  Warning! Please mount the target or source media on device
    "/dev/st0".
Do you want to continue(c), terminate this device only(d), abort the utility(t) ? (c/d/t)
I have full permissions on tape
    SRSPROD:shpadm 39> ls -l /dev/st0
    crwxrwxrwx 1 root disk 9, 0 2010-04-26 08:57 /dev/st0
    Thanku

    Hi,
Before we start into deeper analysis I would like to confirm that normal
writes to the tape works e.g. with OS meanings. Could you please test
if you are able to put an archive with tar to the tape?
    e.g. with "tar cvf /home/<user> /dev/<TAPEDEVICE>"
What happens if you select continue as this message is only a warning?
Does the backup then end with an error?
If so please update with the error you recieve.
    Regards,
    Paul

This error are only reported from brbackup which is running on backup server which is "client side". We don't have problem with connection from work processes on all instances to db server, we have only problem with brbackup which lost connection after split disk system. Umesh,
Since it is case of Ora 600, for which only last solution is oracle support, but i would like to mention that your are getting ORA-00600: internal error code, arguments: [4193].... So, this 4193 is cause to read following links too:
http://www.orafaq.com/forum/t/47048/2/ and. see Metalink note 153788.1 and 39282.1.

  • Full database backup and restore

I have a doubt on the syntax for a full database backup and restore. For a single schema, the syntax for backup & restore is :-
    exp JISPREPCORBILLINGPRD501/JISPREPCORBILLINGPRD501 owner=JISPREPCORBILLINGPRD501 STATISTICS=none
    log=JISPREPCORBILLINGPRD501_exp.log grants=y constraints=Y rows=y compress=N

    imp <userid/password> file=<export dump file location> fromuser=<export user name> touser=<import user name>
    grants=y constraints=Y rows=y log=<import log file location>
I hope, my question is clear.
Please, help in solving the doubt.
    regards

    hi,
thanks, for your answer. I took a export of one schema of the database. But, when I tried to import the schema to the destination database, it showed
imported with errors with the existence of functions showing. The commands used by me for export and import are as follows:-
    exp JISPREPCORBILLINGPRD501/JISPREPCORBILLINGPRD501 owner=JISPREPCORBILLINGPRD501 STATISTICS=none log=JISPREPCORBILLINGPRD501_exp.log grants=y constraints=Y rows=y compress=N file=JISPREPCORBILLINGPRD501

Do, we need to drop the existing schema before importing or somethinig else. Please, help.

I think you misunderstand some concepts.
    1) drop tablespace RTESTUSR including contents and datafiles;
is a valid command, it removes the named tablespace from the database. There's nothing wrong with the database (although it may be a logical (human) error). Restore/recovery is used to repair media failures. RMAN is right: 'RMAN-06019: could not translate tablespace name "RTESTUSR"', since there's no such tablespace in the actual database, the restore/recover process fails.
    2) Unfortunately you hide your database version. Up to 10gR2 tablespace point-in-time recovery cannot be used to recover dropped tablespaces, in 11gR1 and higher it's possible.
And - TSPITR - requires a little bit more than 'set until ...'. Refer to the doumentation for your unknown database version.
