Dblink_encrypt_login, So what in Oracle 10G?
Hi
using of dblink_encrypt_login= true to encrypt the login that is passed from the local to the remote database over the database link.
For Oracle 10G& 11G this parameter is no longer used,
So, How can encrypt login from local to remote db over the DB link?
What is the best practice to encrypt accounts used by DBLINK?
Thank you
The parameter is not valid in 10g and above because 10g cannot create database links to ancient versions of Oracle that could accept connections where the password was sent unencrypted.
When dinosaurs roamed the earth and Oracle 6 was current, passwords were sent unencrypted over the network.
That changed in (if my understanding and recollection is correct) Oracle 7.1 which supported both encrypted and unencrypted passwords
I believe it was somewhere in the Oracle 8-ish time frame that Oracle stopped accepting unencrypted connections.
By Oracle 10g, Oracle stopped initiating unencrypted connections because it no longer supported database links back to versions of Oracle that could accept only unencrypted connections.

Hi
What mechanism Oracle 10g use for write (Insert/ Update) and Read (Select)?
Thank youAren't the answers given in PL/SQL forum sufficient enough?Well, as the first answer in that forum directed the OP to this forum you can hardly blame them for the repost.
There is some high-level stuff in the Concepts Guide. If that is insufficient the OP will need to tell us what more details they need to know (and perhaps why).

What is Oracle 10g Release 2 Real Application Cluster?
Hello Guys,
I have been working in Oracle database 9i for last 2 years. Just using the simple features of oracle. Now our data have grown and company wants to enhance the database version and also want to perform load balancing at oracle's end.
Have heard a lot about Oracle RAC, but i am not sure what actually is oracle rac and its installation.
What is the difference between Oracle 10g Release 2 Enterprise Installation and Oracle 10g Release 2 Real Application Cluster installation. Are these 2 different softwares available on different CDs or RAC is only a different way to install oracle 10g database in RAC mode.
Please clerify and explain. Sorry this is a very beginner level question but i want to learn it and implement it.
Regards,
Imran BaigWhat is the difference between Oracle 10g Release 2
Enterprise Installation and Oracle 10g Release 2 Real
Application Cluster installation. Are these 2Enterprise Edition is the database management software provided byu Oracle.
RAC is an extension to the Standard and Enterprise Edition to permit the same database to be managed from two or more computers. (Withe Enterprise Edition, it is an extra cost option. With Standard Edition, it is included in the price, since SE has other limitations.)
Conceptually, RAC is simple - IF you understand the difference between Instance and Database. RAC = 1 database managed by many instances
Physically, RAC requires a healthy investment in infrastructure - the infrastructure and the RAC software addresses the question: how do you get several computers able to read and write to the same disk and the same block without data corruption?
If you are serious about RAC, take a course. If you are in the US, consider http://www.psoug.org as an 'Intro to RAC' course provider. -

What will you do if any SQL is not working. in oracle 10g....apps 11.5.10.2

tnx,I haven't a clue.
As you have been advised in many of your posts, go study the documentation for whichever specific topic you are interested in.
For me to answer your questions, I would need to go get that documentation.
Then I would need to read that documentation.
Then I would need to write a forum post that interprets what I think I learned from that documentation.
It is so very much faster if YOU go do that instead of posting to a forum and expecting others to do it. You will remember what you study for a lot longer time if you teach yourself. -

What are the Issues in Migration from oracle 8i to oracle 10g
Hi,
Can you let me know what are the issues that i face when i migrate from oracle 8i to oracle 10g. I will be very thankful if you give me a list of issues that you face while migrating from 8i to 10gIn addition to Max's reply, you must be aware that you have to test your applications agains 10g database before you actually upgrade the database.
If you use CBO, it may produce different execution plans for one query when you run it in 8i and 10g. This may affect your application performances, which you don't like to happen.
Also you have to decide how much downtime you can afford during the migration. Can you afford some downtime and how much? If you can't than this makes the situation more complicated.
How big is your database? You may end up only with simple export/import solution using export import utility.
The bottom line is, whatever you decide, you must test your applications running against 10g database before you actually upgrade your database. -
What Are the Tables in new oracle 10g express
Hi guys,
I am new at oracle and I just installed the Oracle 10g express. after login to the oracle by SQL Developer I noticed there are lots of tables in table folder which some of them come with $ and some not! can you please let me know what are these tables for? are they like system tables in SQL Server? if so then what are the tables under
-->Other Users/System/Tables?
I am lost here and I can't figure out what are the Other Users? are they like databases? I tries to google them but I couldn't find any thing

What is the maximum number of characters in an Oracle 10G Instance Name
All,
Can I know what is the maximum number of characters in an oracle 10g instance name under AIX? Is it 7 characters or 8 characters?
regards
SanthoshOne should really make the difference between db_name and instance_name: if instance_name default value is db_name it can be different
(even on a non RAC database).
For example with Oracle 10.2.0.4 you can create a database named DB78 with instance_name=DB12345678:
$ uname -a
Linux lx01.localdomain 2.6.18-92.el5 #1 SMP Fri May 23 22:17:30 EDT 2008 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
$ ps -fu oracle | grep smon
oracle 6353 1 0 20:30 ? 00:00:01 ora_smon_DB12345678
oracle 6412 5596 0 20:37 pts/1 00:00:00 grep smon
$ export ORACLE_SID=DB12345678
$ sqlplus / as sysdba

db_name string DB78
db_unique_name string DB78
global_names boolean FALSE
instance_name string DB12345678
lock_name_space string
log_file_name_convert string
service_names string DB78I would not recommend this practice: but it's interesting to know to avoid confusing between db_name and instance_name. -

Hi all,
i'm a housewife.... i like to work on oracle which is very new to me.... so i recently downloaded "oracle 10g Express Edition" from oracle.com....
i got
run sql commamd line
get started
backup database
start database
stopdatabase
go to database homepage
why those all above???? how i can practice myself on exp' edition???.... actually what the s/w engineers do with express edition???
i follow the instructions given for get started....
i can view sometables which already exist....
what is the use with that.....i don't have any idea when work with get started.....i just follow the instruction given on help and create a table....
what is the actual use of express edition???Hi,
10g express edition (XE) is free database version of 10g. Application Express (Apex) is already installed to it.
Apex version that comes with XE is 2.1.
You can upgrade it to version 3.2.1 witch is latest one. New version of Apex comes with some nice features like interactive reports.
If you have installed XE you are ready to go developer Apex applications and practice Oracle database

Edited by: Arun on Oct 23, 2010 10:19 AMHi,
Just check below link..would be helpful..
http://www.oracle.com/global/ap/openworld/ppt_download/database_manageability%2011g%20overview_230.pdf
and
Each release of Oracle has many differences, and Oracle 10g is a major re-write of the Oracle kernel from Oracle 9i. While there are several hundred new features and other differences between 9i and 10g, here are the major differences between Oracle9i and Oracle10g:
Major changes to SQL optimizer internals
Oracle Grid computing
AWR and ASH tables incorporated into Oracle Performance Pack and Diagnostic Pack options
Automated Session History (ASH) materializes the Oracle Wait Interface over time
Data Pump replaces imp utility with impdp
Automatic Database Diagnostic Monitor (ADDM)
SQLTuning Advisor
SQLAccess Advisor
Rolling database upgrades (using Oracle10g RAC)
dbms_scheduler package replaces dbms_job for scheduling
and you need to refer oracle documentation for sql, plsql references where you will know particular enhancements made...
thanks
