DBMS_ALERT Unknown Within User-Defined PL/SQL Package

Greetings,
I am using Oracle 9i (9.2.0.4.0) database on SUN [sparc] Solaris 9.
From an anonymous PL/SQL block, I can invoke procedures in the DBMS_ALERT package, for example:
begin
  DBMS_ALERT.SIGNAL('Avi','was here');
end;But if I put the above call to DBMS_ALERT.SIGNAL() in a stored procedure, or in a PL/SQL package, I get the following error:
Oracle9i Enterprise Edition Release 9.2.0.4.0 - 64bit Production
With the Partitioning, OLAP and Oracle Data Mining options
JServer Release 9.2.0.4.0 - Production
PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.

4/3      PLS-00201: identifier 'DBMS_ALERT' must be declared
4/3      PL/SQL: Statement ignoredI have searched the OTN forum archives, and the MetaLink Web site, and the Oracle documentation, but I couldn't find anything of help.
I would like someone to explain what I need to do in order to be able to invoke DBMS_ALERT.SIGNAL() from within a user-defined (PL/SQL) package, or an alternative to DBMS_ALERT.SIGNAL().
Basically, I have a procedure that receives a list of parameters, and updates several database tables, based on the supplied parameters. If one (or more) of the parameters is invalid, the procedure does not raise an error, it merely sends an "alert" that notifies any interested parties, that a database table was updated with possibly invalid data.
Thanks (in advance),
Avi.

I'm terribly sorry. I just realized that I had to grant EXECUTE permission specifically to the database user that was trying to call the DBMS_ALERT package procedure.
The following GRANT did the trick (as the SYS user):
grant execute on DBMS_ALERT to SCOTTNow the SCOTT user can invoke DBMS_ALERT procedures from within SCOTT's stored procedures and packages.
Please forgive me for this waste of bandwidth.
Cheers,
Avi.

  • Dose oracle.sql.ArrayDescriptor support the user defined type in package?

    Hi folks:
    I get a obstacle in calling stored procedure by using JDBC driver (ojdbc14.jar).
    I have the following code:
    create or replace package xxx AS
    type var_table is table of varchar2(50);
    procedure(parameter in var_table);
    end xxx;
    When I use the jdbc driver try to create a type for
    oracle.sql.ArrayDescriptor arrayDes = oracle.sql.ArrayDescriptor.createDescriptor( "var_table ",connection);
    The SQLException is thrown out like those:
    Invalid name pattern:user_schema. var_table
    So, my question is : Dose oracle.sql.ArrayDescriptor not support the user defined type in package? And I also tried to define such type by using sql "create xxxx" outside of package, then there is no SQLException.
    Hopefully for your response and suggestion.Thanks...

    To my knowledge, the Oracle JDBC driver does not support using the ArrayDescriptor for array data types (varray or nested table) that are defined inside of a package. The same is true for StructDescriptor as well. If you want to use array and object data types, you must define them outside of a package. Then you'll be able to use the descriptors in your JDBC programs.

  • User-defined function in package

    Hi all,
    is it possible to return more than 1 value when using user-defined function in package?

    I'll try to describe my situation. My need is to find correct client type by its cid number. If it's individual (ct.officialtype = 3) then function returns 3. • Java class within user defined function

    Hi all,
    in order to have a JDBC-lookup java function "globally" in XI i created a java class and imported it to XI as an imported Archive (i have to do the lookup within a mapping). I then can include the class to a user defined function. However the problem is now that this works fine within one Software Component Version but when i want to use it in several SWCV i have to import the jar to every SWCV. My question is therefore if anybody has already had this problem and if there is another possible solution - maybe deploying the class to XI using SDM?
    Thank you for your thoughts.
    Mathias

    hi Markus,
    >>>>My question is therefore if anybody has already had this problem and if there is another possible solution - maybe deploying the class to XI using SDM?
    if you do that then you'll have to remember about it
    every time you import a new SP or upgreade your XI
    this is not standard so SAP may always overwrite it
    and your interfaces will stop working
    consider importing it for every SWCV

  • Calling PL/SQL user defined functions from ODI Constraints

    Hi All,
    We are trying to call user defined PL/SQL functions from ODI. We are able to call them from ODI's User functions. But when we are trying to call them from ODI Constraints under Models, it is throwing an error 'ORA-00920 invalid relational operator'. Kindly let me know if anyone has faced the same issue and got the resolution for the same. Thanks in Advance.
    Regards,
    Abhishek Sharma

    Hi Ace,
    Thanks for the response, the same error was coming in operator also.
    I am able to call PL?SQL user defined functions from ODI Constraints. We have to first call ODI User functions from the ODI constraints as we cant call PL/SQL function (compiled in database) directly.
    From the ODI User functions, we can then call the PL/SQL functions.
    Please reach out to me if you need further details reg this.

  • Querying user-defined types

    I have a table in which one of the columns is a user-defined datatype:
    SQL> describe my_table
    USER_DATA    MYTYPEThe type "MYTYPE" is a simple object that contains one field: a CLOB called MESSAGE:
    SQL> describe mytype
    Name       Null?    Type
    MESSAGE          CLOBWhen I do a "select * ..." from this table, the column USER_DATA is displayed as "MYTYPE(oracle.sql.CLOB@898c2d)"
    I know that for CLOB and BLOB fields, SQL Developer will let me double click the value and view the contents. But for a user-defined type like this that contains a field, I cannot browse into the data members of the type. I find myself wanting to do something like a "select user_data.message from my_table", but this is not valid syntax. Is there a way to query a specific data member of this user-defined type with the rest of the columns in the table so that I can be shown the CLOB member instead of a representation of the object? If not, is there a way to configure SQL Developer to allow me to browse the data members of user-defined types? TOAD has a feature like this but I would like to use SQL Developer exclusively and this is one table I must work with regularly.

  • SQL User Defined Functions for performing statistical calculations

    Hi!
       I hope you can help.  I just wasn’t sure where to go with this question, so I’m hoping you can at least point me in the right direction.
       I’m writing a SQL Server stored procedure that returns information for a facility-wide scorecard-type report.  The row and columns are going to be displayed in a SQL Server Reporting Services report.
       Each row of information contains “Current Month” and “Previous Month” numbers and a variance column.  Some rows may compare percentages, others whole numbers, others ratios, depending on the metric they’re measuring.  For each row/metric the company has specified whether they want to see a t-test or a chi-squared statistical test to determine whether or not there was a statistically significant difference between the current month and the previous month.
       My question is this:  Do you know where I can find a set of already-written user defined functions to perform statistical calculations beyond the basic ones provided in SQL Server 2005?  I’m not using Analysis Services, so what I’m looking for are real SQL User Defined Functions where I can just pass my data to the function and have it return the result within a stored procedure.
       I’m aware that there may be some third-party statistical packages out there we could purchase, but that’s not what I’m looking for.   And I’m not able to do anything like call Excel’s analysis pack functions from within my stored procedure.   I’ve asked.   They won’t let me do that.   I just need to perform the calculation within the stored procedure and return the result.
       Any suggestions?  Is there a site where people are posting their SQL Server UDF’s to perform statistical functions?  Or are you perhaps aware of something like a free add-in for SQL that will add statistical functions to those available in SQL?   I just don’t want to have to write my own t-test function or my own chi-squared function if someone has already done it.
     Thanks for your help in advance!  Oh, and please let me know if this should have been posted in the TSQL forum instead.  I wasn't entirely sure.

  • How to use user-defined packages in JAX-RPC web service

    I am trying to use Object of my class located in my package in jax-rpc webservice,the code is
    package supercomputer;
    import Hello.*;

    public String sendParam(String data)
    Temp ob=new Temp();
    int i=ob.get1(10000);
    return data+"returned by supercomputer";
    Temp is located in Hello package,I have jar the Hello package as Hello.jar and has set its classpath in targets.xml of Ant tool.
    The code compiles well and service is deployed successfully,but when i try to call the service from the client its gives me following error.
    [echo] Running the supercomputer.SuperClient program....

    I dont know if it deploys why it gives error on client side.
    Please tell how to use user-defined packages and class in jax-rpc service code ,i am not talking about passing user-defined parameters i am just talking about making objects of user defined classes in jax-rpc service.I think there is some problem in classpath.
    Please guide me in doing that.
    Thanks,
    Farrukh

    Farrukh,
    I don't know if your error is about a missing class from your custom package, ... what track did you followed to say that?
    To use your package in the implementation of you web service, you should only follow the rules of making a web application: put your package jar in your \lib directory inside WEB-INF/ or your package classes unjared in classes (also in WEB-INF/).
    As I already said, I have doubts that your error should be originated from a missing class from your package, but:
    -try to see the logs (errors?) when you deploy your web service that could give a hint about the problem.
    -try to see if you can access your endpoint through your browser to see if there is a online status
    -display your config/WSDL file, and the steps you did to build your web service.
    regards,
    Pedro Salazar.

  • User defined table types sometimes show up a unknown data type in Profiler

    A couple of our users have a problem when using user defined table types. Calls are made using UDTT as variables and these are then passed to a stored procedure as parameters. Sometimes the application returns a timeout. In such situations a Profiler-Trace
    shows the following:
    declare @p4 unknown
    whereas the correct trace (that is sometimes displayed) should be:
    declare @p4 dbo.ReportFilterTableType
    ReportFilterTableType is a UDTT. The users do have correct permissions for the UDTT (otherwise they would never be usable for the user). What could be the reason that the data types for the variable
    @p4 in the example are sometimes returned as unknown and at other times are returned correctly as
    ReportFilterTableType? Could this possibly be a network related issue?
    Thank you.
    Graham Goodwin Email: [email protected]

    I know this is a old post, but i am also facing the same issue that too in my production server. Did you find any workarround for this issue. Please do reply. Critical problem we are facing.
    Alka, Is your problem timeouts when passing TVP parameters, or is it that a Profiler Trace shows type "unknown" for the TVP data type name?
    If your problem is timeouts, be aware that TVPs do not have statistics so the optimizer might not be able to generate an optimal plan for non-trivial queries. Declaring a primary key or unique constraint on the table type may help since that will provide
    useful cardinality information.  You may need to resort to hints in some cases.
    I suggest you start a new thread with details of your specific situation if the information in this thread doesn't help.

  • Issue in passing Oracle User Defined Types to PL SQL from Websphere Applica

    HI,
    I am facing an issue when trying to pass Oracle collection object(User Defined Types) from Java to PL SQL. The issue happens inside J2EE application which is running inside Websphere Application Server 6.x. My database is Oracle 10g and i am using ojdbc1.4.jar as thin driver.
    The issue is that when i pass the Oracle Object from java side, the attribute values of the collection objects at the Oracle PL SQL side is coming as empty. I have tried the same java code in a standalone application and it works fine. The issue happens only when the application is running inside WAS.
    Anybody has any idea how to pass Oracle User Defined Types from WAS 6.x server to Oracle PL SQL?

    Andy Bowes wrote:
    Hi
    I am using WebLogic 8.14 & Oracle 9i with thin JDBC driver.
    Our application needs to perform the same DB operation for every item in a Java Collection. I cannot acheive the required performance using the standard Prepare & Execute loop and so I am looking to push the whole collection to Oracle in a single invocation of a Stored Procedure and then loop on the database.
    Summary of Approach:
    In the Oracle database, we have defined a Object Type :
    CREATE OR REPLACE
    TYPE MYTYPE AS OBJECT
    TxnId VARCHAR2(40),
    Target VARCHAR2(20),
    Source VARCHAR2(20),
    Param1 VARCHAR2(2048),
    Param2 VARCHAR2(2048),
    Param3 VARCHAR2(2048),
    Param4 VARCHAR2(2048),
    Param5 VARCHAR2(2048),
    and we have defined a collection of these as:
    CREATE OR REPLACE
    TYPE MYTYPE_COLLECTION AS VARRAY (100) OF MYTYPE
    There is a stored procedure which takes one of these collections as an input parameter and I need to invoke these from within my code.
    I am having major problems when I attempt to get the ArrayDescriptor etc to allow me to create an Array to pass to the stored procedure. I think this is because the underlying Oracle connection is wrapped by WebLogic.
    Has anyone managed to pass an array to an Oracle Stored procedure on a pooled DB connection?
    Thanks
    AndyHi. Here's what I suggest: First please get the JDBC you want to work in a
    small standalone program that uses the Oracle thin driver directly. Once
    that works, show me the JDBC code, and I will see what translation if
    any is needed to make it work with WLS. Will your code be running in
    WebLogic, or in an external client talking to WebLogic?
    Also, have you tried the executeBatch() methods to see if you can
    get the performance you want via batches?

  • PL/SQL Using SQL%NOTFOUND to raise a user defined exception in a function

    I have written the following function for finding the number of items in stock in the item table.
    CREATE OR REPLACE function getAmount (ItemID IN NUMBER)
    RETURN NUMBER
    AS
    invalid_id EXCEPTION;
    returnedQty number;
    BEGIN
    Select qty
    Into returnedQty
    From item
    Where itemNo = ItemID;
    RETURN (returnedQty);
    IF SQL%NOTFOUND THEN
    RAISE invalid_id;
    END IF;
    COMMIT;
    Exception
    WHEN invalid_id THEN
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('Invalid ID entered');
    END getAmount;
    The function compiles successfully, although there is a problem that Oracle is not handling my user-defined exception invalid_id
    If I use the following for a valid itemID:
    DECLARE
    return_value number;
    BEGIN
    return_value := getAmount(1);
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE (return_value);
    END;
    then the function returns the quantity of items in stock correctly.
    However, if I enter an incorrect itemID, say 20
    DECLARE
    return_value number;
    BEGIN
    return_value := getAmount(20);
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE (return_value);
    END;
    The invalid_id exception is not raised, and the Oracle errors says: no_data_found and the function has not returned a value. If I add a no_data_found exception, this works perfectly, but for this assignment I must write my own user-defined error.
    Any help would be very much appreciated!
    Thank you.

    What you're trying to do, is to use an implicit cursor. Implicit cursors will raise no_data_found and too_many_rows in case of an error. Explicit cursors will not.
    Also, you have a small coding error ... a little rewrite and your code will do as you want to:
    CREATE OR REPLACE function getAmount (ItemID IN NUMBER)
    RETURN NUMBER
    AS
    invalid_id EXCEPTION;
    returnedQty number;
    cursor citem is
    Select qty
    From item
    Where itemNo = ItemID;
    fnd boolean;
    BEGIN
    open citem;
    fetch citem Into returnedQty;
    fnd := citem%found;
    close citem;
    if fnd then
    RETURN (returnedQty);
    else
    RAISE invalid_id;
    END IF;
    /* Do not catch your own exception or the calling code will not receive it.
    Exception
    WHEN invalid_id THEN
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('Invalid ID entered');
    END getAmount;
    Your problem is, you're not using a package. This means, that the calling code has no way of catching this user-defined exeption. The correct way is to define a package, define the userdefined exception in the package and refer to it in your code:
    create or replace package amt
    is
    invalid_id EXCEPTION;
    function getAmount (ItemID IN NUMBER)
    RETURN NUMBER;
    end;
    create or replace package body amt
    is
    function getAmount (ItemID IN NUMBER)
    RETURN NUMBER
    AS
    returnedQty number;
    cursor citem is
    Select qty
    From item
    Where itemNo = ItemID;
    fnd boolean;
    BEGIN
    open citem;
    fetch citem Into returnedQty;
    fnd := citem%found;
    close citem;
    if fnd then
    RETURN (returnedQty);
    else
    RAISE invalid_id;
    END IF;
    end;
    end; -- end package
    To do a simple test, you'll do:
    declare
    a number;
    begin
    a := amt.getAmount(123);
    dbms_output.put_line('The result is '||a);
    exception
    when amt.invalid_id then
    dbms_output.put_line('ID not found');
    end;
    Other ways is to raise the exception in your no_data_found block.
    But I'm REALLY puzzled if there's really someone out there who prefers a user-defined exception instead of the clearly defined NO_DATA_FOUND exception.
    I can't be sure of course, but are you sure what they mean is they don't want ANY exception? That's a pretty common requirement.
    In general - explicit cursors are a bit faster because Oracle does not have to do a second fetch to determine TOO_MANY_ROWS. And it's not too much additional writing. Explicit cursors will never raise exceptions - unless you use dynamic sql and your SQL is invalid.
    Good luck
