Dead ipod touch 4

I am very dissapointed with Apple at the moment. My daughters ipod touch was bought on 1/11/11 and it died yesterday. It had been dodgy to charge all week but today it was totally dead and will not connect to PC, Laptop or docking station. Took it to the genius bar and expained it was 2 weeks out of warranty but was only registered on Boxing day.  As it has died from no fault of out own I was expecting a bit more advice than I recieved or even better an offer of replacement. I just got the standard "it could have died for any number of reasons. £75 to repair or 10% off a new one." No thank you!!! Terrified my other daughters is going to die on me now. Very sad to think of an empty and now useless docking station next to her bed.
Has anyone else had any luck arguing the warranty between purchase date and activation date? Especially as the failure is the device itself and not damage by the user?

The warranty clearly includes:
"against defects in materials and workmanship when used normally in accordance with Apple's published guidelines for a period of ONE (1) YEAR from the date of original retail purchase by the end-user purchaser ("Warranty Period").

    There is nothing you can do now. There are apps available from the app store that would give you that information if installed before it was lost/stolen.

  • 2nd dead iPod Touch 4G in 2 months?  Battery/charging problems!

    Hi everyone,
    It seems as of tonight that I will have to return my second iPod Touch 4G in the last two months. In both cases, it was an issue where the device would no longer charge, and became very hot on the top of the back panel when the device was turned on even for a few seconds (while not being plugged in). In the first case, the device seemed to be defective from the time I opened the box, which was confirmed at an Apple Store, but they asked me to ship it to Apple Repair to be checked out. Apple took a very long time to get a replacement to me, but was good about that problem, and I was happy with the replacement for the past month when all of a sudden tonight the new one would not change and became very hot.
    Is this an issue that anyone else has seen? I essentially only charged it off of my laptop or a wall charger unit, but it seems like the battery essentially is shorting out. I love this device, but actually need to use a PDA-type device enough that I am questioning whether I should get a replacement or go back to my old Palm TX.
    Thanks for any thoughts/feedback on my iPod Touch 4G battery/charging problems.

    Most battery complaints complain about loss of charge. The iPod is designed to lose heat through the back as the battery discharges. This is most common when using the device a lot - like playing games. If yours will no loner charge, by all means return it to Apple.
    As far as being a PDA goes, it is as good as any smart phone out there. The PDA, as you once knew it, is dead and has been for 5+ years. Take your iPod to an Apple store and insist on a replacement.

    Cross-posted to "iPod Touch" forum... But because another person had a similar problem with Vista as well, am posting here too in case someone can help...
    ...Not only during update to 3.0, but also during update to 2.2.1 and during a restore attempt 6 weeks ago. All 3 "dead" iPods have been replaced by Apple - I'd like a solution...
    I have videoed the update taking place and the iPod dying during it - sadly it is in MOV format (439MB) and I cannot convert to an uploadable version for Youtube... By DEAD, I mean, no power and will not display ANYTHING on the screen. Simply won't power up again.
    This is what happens: Download update using iTunes... Extracting software... Backing up iPod... Preparing the iPod for the software update... (iPod shows USB plug and CD - then apple logo...) then the updating progress line appears on iTunes and on touch. Updating iPod software... Verifying updated iPod software... Updating the iPod firmware... White progress line on iPod disappears after a few seconds and screen goes black. Error message displays on iTunes - "The iPod xxxx could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (6)"
    iPod is now dead and needs to be replaced,
    1) Has anyone experienced this?
    2) Has anyone SOLVED it?
    Maybe related is a problem with some videos that have happened recently (and were the cause of me trying to restore the iPod last time it died) MP4 (or MPV files) play for about 20-30 minutes, then screen goes white, then black, then apple logo appears, then iPod returns to home screen after about 30 seconds. My usual solution to this has been to remove all videos, photos (which are corrupted by this time), audio, and then re-sync back.
    I'd appreciate ANY help please. I intend buying an iPhone soon and would like to know that the problem won't occur on that, every time I try to restore.

  • Dead iPod Touch after upgrade and multiple freezes

    I have kept everything up to date on my MacBook Pro and iPod Touch, but I began having problems on the Touch once updates for new Apps appeared. If I tried to update the Apps wirelessly using the Touch (is there any other way?) the thing froze up from the first try. Getting it back to normal would take several hard restarts or a complete reinstall from iTunes. However, whenever I got it restored and working there was still the problem that most of my Apps were still waiting on updates and the number was increasing. I figured the problem was a bug in one of the updates, so I tried updating just one App at a time -- but every time the Touch would freeze and the cycle of several hard restarts and much time waiting before it became usable was repeated. My next thought was to remove all Apps and try them one-by-one to see if there was a particular problem. In this way, I was able to get wireless updates to work (one-by-one) and most of my Apps back on the iPod. THEN while I was still doing this, the recent upgrade appeared for the Touch and of course I installed it immediately thinking my problems would soon go away. All seemed fine, and after checking it I went on to try to install the last few apps. But upon the installation of my last app (Texas Hold'em) iTunes froze along with the iPod. I had to force quit iTunes and tried to hard restart the ipod. I WAS able to get the iPod to shut down, but since that time, I am unable to fully RESTART the iPod Touch at all. It shows the Apple logo and over a period of a few minutes might beep a couple of times, but appears frozen. If I wait for a long while the battery eventually goes dead. If I connect it to a power source it makes no difference. I have tried restarting 6-7 times, but this time it just won't get past the Apple. Reconnecting it in its dead state to iTunes starts a vain effort that leads to iTunes freezing. Before I return it to Apple for repair, is there ANYTHING else I should try??

    I too have been having many issues with the recent upgrade as well as updating my apps. For the upgrade, I rebooted 3 times and on the last try, I waited for over an hour before the apple logo finally gave way to the menu. Since then I attempted to install the app upgrades through the wi-fi on the iPod Touch to no avail. My previous attempts only resulted in the Touch freezing and I had to force a reboot. Today if I "install" I see the loading progress on the app's icon but it keeps repeating the process. One app gave me a message that it cannot be installed directly and that I had to use iTunes. I synced the iPod and I did see the message that it was installing the app; but, the icon on the iPod still indicates that it's attempting to load. Is there a way to update using iTunes? Is there a way to simply update using any method?

  • How to revive my dead Ipod touch?

    Last time I used my ipod was yesterday at about 5pm, working completely normally. I went out from then and had the ipod in my pocket. I got home at 12 and noticed the Ipod was dead. I connected it to a dock incase it was just out of battery, left it for about 10 minutes and still nothing.
    This morning I've attempted to restore the Ipod. On connecting to Itunes, the software told me the Ipod was in "recovery mode" and couldn't be used untill the device was restored. I attempted a restore several times, each ending the same with error code 28 (sometime varying to 2005).
    ((On connecting the Ipod and attempting the restore, I do see the screen light up and show an Apple logo and a loading bar. After two minutes Itunes gives up on the restore and says "Unknown Error 28".))
    The Ipod is a forth generation
    Itunes also cant tell me anything on about the ipod e.g. Serial Number, Memory and so on are all "n/a".
    After calling Apple earlier they've told me to try switching wires, USB ports and PCs (all of which I've done). The I told the "Genius" that the restore wasn't working and resulting in Unknown error 28, to which they replied "The restore has to work"... They then went on to tell me that because my warranty was out, I'd have to fork out £124 for a replacement which (In all honesty, I want to avoid at all cost).
    Since then I have found out how to Force Restore my already seemlying capput device. This did make me slightly optimistic as the "Connect to Itunes" picture showed up. One seeing this I attempted to once again restore the decive  having (seemingly) a little more success as on this occasion the device appeared to reach the end of the restore load bar. But lone behold, I met another error, this time "Error number 14".
    I realise this is ask to get this back to the way it was. Just feel a little cheated is all.
    Any help is appriciated.

    Your symptoms are almost identical to a problem I've had for the past two days.
    I'm trying to revive an iPod touch 4g that wascompletely drained of battery power. When plugged into a computer, It gets stuck at the Apple logo for 5 seconds, then reboots, ...logo, reboot... in an endless cycle.
    Changing PCs did not help.
    The main difference is that I'm getting error 21 (when attempting to restore), both errors refer to http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3125
    I followed those instructions, they did not help. :-(
    Note that when you connect it to iTunes, that does NOT necessarily mean it is charging. If you don't see a battery indicator next to the eject button, that confirms it's not charging.
    So I went and got an AC charger for iPhone/iPod and after a couple hours of charging, that seems to have "partially" revived mine.
    Right now as I post this the ipod is on AC power and loops from the Apple logo to the locked screen, with a picture of a red battery that is almost empty. Hmm, makes me wonder if the battery is on it's last limb? They are replaceable (although it's not easy and requires soldering skills).
    I will keep you updated.
    I would suggest try to charge yours with an AC adapter if you haven't already?

  • Dead iPod Touch screen

    Hi,
    my 2nd generation iPod Touch screen won't work properly (which I got a year ago along with a university special with a Macbook Pro). When I plug it to iTunes, it shows all the info thats in the iPod, but the screen would only turn bright-white for 15 seconds and then stops. It worked well when I last used it, a couple of hours ago.

    Did you already try to reset the ipod by holding the sleep and home button until the Appl logo comes back again?

  • Updating to 6.01 = Dead Ipod Touch

    Warning - not all updates end in happy smiling improvements
    Selecting update last night (from 6.0 to 6.01) on the Ipod Touch 32gb :  Serial No: dj6gf0f5dc..
    Unit froze half way through updating.
    Now has either a red screen or blue screen after various attempts to restart.
    Have tried draining the power, connecting to a computer etc... nothing happening.
    I'm guess the Apple Software update has bricked the ipod touch.
    I've been a user, tech support, apple guy since my 512 in '88 - but I have never felt such ineptitude as with this little silver and black box.
    What a dissapointment.

    This has worked for some others.:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Dirty dock = dead ipod touch?

    I just sent my iPod touch (2nd gen) in for repair because it froze on the Apple logo after powerup. Apple said the iPod was not eligible for warranty work because it was mistreated. When I called Apple to find out how it was mistreated, I was told the dock area on the iPod had hairs and "gunk" in it and that it could have caused the power circuit to die. Really? A dirty dock on the iPod can kill it? I never thought iPod would be that sensitive to dirt; now I think maybe they are! So keep your iPods squeaky clean. Personally I'll find another PMP that's better at fighting "gunk".

    My daughters ipod touch does will not come on at all.  I've tried to reset it by holding down the 2 buttons for 10 seconds but that doesn't work.  I've also tried putting on a docking station but there is no power.  Do you have any suggestions?

    How long did you wait after connecting the iPod to the docking station? When the iPod has been discharged completely, it will take some time (at least a quarter of an hhour) before you will see some reactions.
    If the docking station cannot charge the iPod, connect it to an USB port of the computer and try to charge it from there.
    If that does not help, put the iPod in recovery mode by following the instructions here

While doing this, version 2.1 and iTunes 8 were downloaded. When I try to restore my iPod I keep getting the message "The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (6)." I have restarted my computer and iPod, and I have used all the USB ports (which work perfectly) in my computer.
    Any suggestions?

    Do you have an Apple story nearby?
    If so take make an appointment with them and take it in.
    If not, then contact Apple support by phone, sounds like you may have a bad iPod.

    All of your media should already be in iTunes on your computer.  iPods and iPhones are not storage devices for your content.
