Debugging PDF Reviews in SharePoint

Wanted to share my resolution to a recent problem. Some review participants with Adobe Reader 9  were unable to connect to the review server (SharePoint), and could not see the Shared Review Information Bar (which displays the options to Check For New Comments or Publish Comments). Other reviewers had no trouble at all.
We confirmed that the server location was properly setup via the wizard in Acrobat Pro 9. The reviewers had correct permissions in SharePoint. They uninstalled and reinstalled the latest version of Reader, downloaded directly from the Adobe site. All to no avail.
What finally made a difference was a change to Internet Explorer settings. The SharePoint site was in our company intranet, but it was not consistently recognized as an intranet site. Therefore it did not automatically rely on the reviewer's Windows authentication settings when joining a PDF review. Adding the root URL of the SharePoint server to the Intranet Zone, and allowing automatic login, cleared up the problem.
Procedure: In Internet Explorer, choose Tools > Internet Options > Security tab > Sites, and add the SharePoint root URL. Return to the Security tab, and choose Custom level. At the bottom of the Settings list, in the User Authentication | Logon section, make sure that "Automatic logon" (e.g., "only in the Intranet zone") is selected.

One way to annotate PDF file in SharePoint is to check it out to local drafts.
To accomplish that you need to enable edit by changing  PDF mapping in C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\Web Server Extensions\15\TEMPLATE\XML\DOCICON.xml from <Mapping Key="pdf" Value="icpdf.png" OpenControl=""/> to <Mapping
Key="pdf" Value="icpdf.png" EditText="Foxit Reader" OpenControl="SharePoint.OpenDocuments"/> and restart IIS.
The only browser that allows local checkout is Internet Explorer (IE TAB works as well), remember to check use my local drafts.
I have not found any other way to do it, Adobe solution in Adobe Reader 11 Pro does not work and an ran into problems using Foxit solution, this solution has similar complexity for user as Foxit solution if their user manuals are correct.

  • Acrobat Pro 9 SharePoint PDF Review Remote Service Authentication

I am using Adobe Acrobat Pro Extended 9.4.3 (as part of the Technical Communication Suite 2.5). I am hosting PDF reviews on our company SharePoint server. In the past, I haven't had any problems doing this.
However today I cannot connect, and a "Remote Service Authentication" dialog box (see below) appears everytime I try to connect to a PDF review. This is the same for both reviews I have started, or for reviews others have started. Also, I have full permissions for the SharePoint Document Library.
I entered my credentials, then clicked OK. The dialog box just reappears over... and over... and over.
It doesn't seem to matter which program the PDF documents were created with (same dialog for documents generated from MS Word and Framemaker). And a co-worker was able to connect without a problem and enter comments (of course, I can't see his comments since I cannot connect to the server). This leads me to believe that it is a problem on my machine.
    Any ideas?

Yes, I initiated the review. When I initiated the review, I saw a different dialog for entering my username and password. That took my credentials and uploaded the PDF to SharePoint.
I don't remember seeing RSA dialog (see the image I attached to the first post) when I created the review, only when I opened the PDF after the review was generated. At that point, I did select to save the credentials, but it didn't seem to save them (since everytime the dialog appears it is blank).
I had another one of our tech writers test it before sending it to the rest of the team, and he was able to access the review and put in test comments. He never saw the dialog. At that point, I looked at other reviews that I had initiated in the past, and was unable to add comments to those either (at least for the ones that didn't have a deadline). So I am pretty sure it is something that has changed on my system in the last few weeks. Perhaps a Microsoft Security update?

  • Synchroniser bug? shared reviews on Sharepoint Server

    Hope someone can help.
We have a hosted sharepoint service which our customers use as a place to conduct shared PDF reviews. Our customers use a mix of versions 8 and 9 of Reader and Acrobat. Much of the time things work well but we are frequently running into a situation where the shared comments become lost. By that I mean in review tracker there is no listing of comments that have been made by lots of other reviewers. Some reviewers can see all ther comments but others cannot.
What seems to be happening is that the local off-line copies of the comments on the users hard disk are being corrupted. When this happens Reader/Tracker is unable to cope and no longer manages to find the comments on the Sharepoint Server. By deleting the corrupted local comments and then disconnecting and reconnecting the shared review we can get everything working again but this is not an acceptable solution for our users. We need a way of not having the problem happen in the first place.
The reason the local comments become corrput seems to be the synchronizer task. When we look at the local comment files instead of containing nice xml comments they actually contain the html of a sharepoint "you failed to login" web page. Our sharepoint server uses form-based authentication. In normal operation we are already logged in to Sharepoint and so we can download the PDF, view it in Reader and track comments fine.
However the synchronizer is running outside of a browser based session. It seems to be trying to log into Sharepoint using a cached session ID but after a while this id expires and it can no longer log in. Instead of failing gracefully it actually downloads the html of the "you failed to login"web page and thus corrupts the file. From this point on Reader/Tracker no longer works correctly.
Is this a bug in synchronizer and is there a fix available?
    Thanks.

Amboo,  I'm using Acrobat Pro 9.3.3 and Windows XP.
My login name is grayed out and I cannot change it. It does NOT match my
acrobat.com login, which is [email protected]  Also, note
in my preference categories that acrobat.com preferences is not
available. I think it used to be...
I did get the new 2011 TOU agreement box a few days ago, and agreed.
    Have not seen it since.
Thanks for responding!  I am desperate to get this working!

  • Shared review using Sharepoint 2010 Foundation

    Brief description *
    Sharepoint for Shared review
Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible *
Shared review using server acrobat.com works fine. However, when using Sharepoint as server the testing fails and it is not possible to finnish the set up of the shared review.
This is pictured in(bild1.jpg.) As the return code is Status: undefined it is not possible to proceed.
However, when looking into the sharepoint site a file called com.adobe.acrobat.sharepoint has been created as shown in attachment2 (bild2.jpg)
When this file is opened it contains the following text written by acrobat; Testing Writeablility
It seems like the test has been done sucessfully but that Acrobat is not able to read/understand that.
My Acrobat 9 is swedish version but the 'Testing Writeablility' is in english regardless of if I create a Sharepoint site in swedish or english.
    Please help me out.
    regards Anders K

The login names of the sharepoint server is not controlled by my organisation. Sharepoint is hosted.
At the time initiating the review when Sharepoint is presenting possible locations (shared documents libraries) for the review then I need to login
using credentials very much diffrent from the windows credentials.
They are of course also diffrent from the identity that Acrobat itself is carrying from the acrobat.com?
This situation is the same for for the reviewers that has no problem.
    regards
PS do you have a suspicion that windows credentials or Acrobat credentials are thrown automatically at Sharepoint although I have logged in
at the time of finding possible review location.

  • Disable IRM for PDF files in SharePoint 2013

    Hi,
Do anyone know how to disable PDF protection in SharePoint 2013. Earlier version they did not have it OOTB, so users were using same library to upload office documents and pdf as well expecting that only office docs are protected. But now PDF protection
    is enable by default.
Please let me know if anyone know how to disable IRM from PDF docs only and keeping other Office docs protected as it.
    Thanks,

I had the same issue, as my customer was not prepared to implement IRM on PDF documents, and there seems to be only a third-party solution PDF viewer which supports AD RMS. I was surprised to find this enabled by default, but it can be removed. Delete
the key below from the registry, and then run 'iisreset' from an elevated command prompt.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\15.0\IrmProtectors\{FC93F6CC-D367-4FC9-B3F6-E0933A24A8C8}

  • Shared Reviews on SharePoint 2010 Won't Open on 11.0.09

Does anyone else run shared reviews on SharePoint 2010?  Since the 11.0.09 update shared reviews will not open in IE 10 or 11 causing a fault in it's Data Execution Prevention.  Our marketing team is up in arms at this point as our help desk has to consistently go and remove Acrobat and reinstall it back to some prior version.  Inevitable though, someone will take the update again and bring things to a crashing halt.
Our network team is unwilling to disable DEP so I've found some articles on how to have them disable Acrobat updates through group policy.  Adobe just seems to be ignoring this so I'm not sure I have any alternative but thought I'd ask first, if anyone else is having this issue and been able to find another way around it?
Otherwise disabling updates seems to be our only option but that means locking them down to the original purchased version.  Not ideal but it's essentially where we are today anyway.
    Thanks.

  • PDF Output: Why is "PDF Review" styled different than "Generate PDF"?

I am new to RH.  I have imported a folder of HTML files (used in an Eclipse Help plugin) into RH9 for HTML as a project. My goal is to produce a PDF document.
When I generate a PDF from Printed Documentation in the Single Source Layouts pad, many styles are incorrect. I've tried generating to Word and from there to PDF with the same effect.
However, when I use Create PDF for Review from Project Manager the styles shown in the PDF (fonts, alignment, etc) are nearly perfect! Is the PDF Review option using a different CSS?
I have tried exploring the CSS specified in the Generate PDF flow, but I am unable to make changes, perhaps due to my massive state of confusion.  So I'm losing hope that I could manually tweak to CSS that I think I use in the Generate PDF flow to appear like the "PDF Review" flow. I specified the same CSS used in the Eclipse Help system, but evidently there must be some defaults built into the Eclipse viewer that are not specified in the CSS we use.
    Thanks in advance,
    Charly in SJ

Here's what I think is happening. You say PDF review is good but printed documentation gives wrong styles. You also say you assume PDF review uses the Stylesheet (CSS) for each topic, yes it does. Now if that is giving the correct styles it tells you that is what you need when you generate printed documentation.
When you use a Word template you will get very different styles unless you have set up the template to mirror your CSS. Using the Map to CSS option you have two choices, you can select None when each topic will be printed according to the CSS attached to the topic or you can select one of the CSS files available in the project.
I suspect that if you select the None option, you will get the same as you are seeing in the PDF review.
If your document is not going to be worked on by anyone, such as a training department using it as a based document, then the CSS options are fine. If others will be working on it, then the Word template option is better as lists will be true lists and headings will be true heading styles.

  • Pdf Filter for Sharepoint 2003 not working properly

We are having some problem in crawling pdf documents in Sharepoint sites.
We installed Adobe's IFilter 6.0 on the Sharepoint Farm.
But, found that crawling is not happening properly. i.e, when full text search is given for some key words present in pdf documents, for some of the words search is not returning the documents.
    Here is a senario.
There is a document called 'Best Practices.pdf', in 3 sub sites.
'Throw EDMSException from catch blocks.' - a line that is present in the above document.
In full text search if 'EDMSException from' is given, all the 3 documents under 3 sites are being displyed in the search results.
But, if 'Throw EDMSException' is given, no documents are getting displayed in the search results.
    Please help on this issue.
P.S. : There is a table in that pdf document and within a cell, the above line is present.

    Hi there,
We are developing an application where we are storing pdf files as Image in SQL Server 2000. We tried to implement Full Text Search for the same, but it works only for text files and not for pdf files stored in database. We have installed Adobe's IFilter 6.0 and followed all instructions that i found in one article (http://www.indexserverfaq.com/Blobs.htm). We are not getting what we wre missing. Any help whill be greatly appriciated. My emailid is [email protected]

  • Online pdf reviewing

We are looking for online PDF reviewing solution. Could you help me to decide which of Adobe products are required to implement the application featured with:
    -Web Application
-Allows concurrent review to any PDF file.
-Enables the PDF commenting before uploading PDF packages
-Comments added in Adobe Reader or Acrobat
-Comments should be extracted and inserted into Comments Database
    Thanks

1] At the beginning of the article I say "This topic was originally produced for RH HTML X3 but has been revised for RH X5. Changes in RoboHelp 6 and 7 were minor so the article remains good for those versions. Some additional output options were added to RoboHelp 8 and I will be updating the article for those."
2] Where do I say links for PDFs don't format properly? Popups yes but I cannot see such a reference for PDFs.
3] The topics in your printed document will be whatever you have defined in the print layout. You can start with the TOC and add them in the print layout, as my article describes or you can define a separate TOC, that's how I would do it. I am not clear why that is unrealistic.

  • Native PDF Conversion in SharePoint?

    Greetz!
Both Word Automation and Document Conversion are in SP 2013 but everything I've read points to either custom development or a 3rd party solution for converting word docs in a library to pdf on some sort of a schedule. I'm looking for a way to convert word
to pdf thru a workflow or on a schedule via A timer job but I don't want to program or manually convert.  Am I wasting my time? Does Document Conversion  even go to PDF? I've seen things on Word to html for that service but not to pdf.
    Thanks!
    Love them all...regardless. - Buddha

There are 3rd party products that can do this (http://www.muhimbi.com/Products/PDF-Converter-for-SharePoint.aspx), and I also wrote a solution that can do this via SharePoint 2010 Workflow (works with 2013) - https://github.com/Nauplius/WAS.

  • Issues opening Acrobat pdf's in SharePoint 2013

In SharePoint 2007, once I checked a pdf out and clicked on it, the pdf opened in Acrobat and I could edit it as necessary.
However, I am having an issue opening pdf's in SharePoint 2013.  When I check the pdf out and click on open, the pdf opens in Word Web app.  How can I get SharePoint to open the pdf in Adobe?  I have researched and looked at all of the settings I could and haven't found anything.

    Yes, it is possible.
About Philip point. Once installed, office documents will be opened in web apps by default - you can change it by activating site collection feature called "Open Documents in Client Applications by Default". After this setup, users will opens office document
in their client applications as they've been used to before, but they will have additional option to open office documents right in their browsers (through web apps) through item context menu.

  • Saving changes in PDF back to sharepoint

I have a pdf on a sharepoint server that I want to add a note to, but when I try to save it the save function is not available. I can only use Save as... and then the file is saved locally on my computer not on the sharepoint server. Is this a "Feature" or is something wrong? If it is a error is it with sharepoint or Acrobat?
I can save changes to word files back to the server without any problem.
    Thanks for any help.

    Geo,
A bit of time has passed on this topic, but I, too, would like to know how to patch Sharepoint so that Adobe Acrobat files can be edited. Specifically, we would like to post Acrobat files enabled for commenting to Sharepoint, and have users check out the files, add comments using Acrobat commenting functionality, then check them back in. Can this be done? Any light you can shed will be greatly appreciated.
    Thx,
    GMc
