DECODE to return a null value

I would like to know how to return a Null value for a number based on users input.
Somethingh like where A = DECODE(:input,'any',return is not null,:input)
A is a number datatype.

Like if the input variable is 'any' then decode should return 'is not null' i.e. the query should return all the records where a particular column is not null.

Thank you for your promt response...I tried doing them as well. but nothing seems to work.
It returns a length value of 1. It appears to be strange. I even tried to catch the null and set some junk text. When i try to check for the returned text again it returns a false.
I dont know if this is the way responseText works. I tried setting a form variable but it doesnt do that too. Is there a specific way to check for the values in returned responseText?

CFQUERY results return a null value for a varchar(MAX) field in SQL

I'm using ColdFusion 9 and SQL Server 2008.
One the fields in a table is defined as a varchar(MAX). Other fields in the table are ints, varchar(8000) varchar(256), etc.
When doing a query for records in the table and displaying the results using the cfdump tag, I see values in all fields in a row EXCEPT for the data in the varchar(MAX) field. The varchar(MAX) field shows a null value. Yet, I can verify through the SQL interface or through Microsoft Access querying the database that the varchar(MAX) fields have data.
How can I retrieve data from this field type?

I'm wrong. I AM getting query results, but not what I expect. I had maxrows set as a variable in my original query, so when it returned 5 rows, the first row always showed as [empty string]. I've tried numerous queries now (where UID >100, where UID >200, where UID> 300, etc.) When I use <CFDUMP> to return the query, the first records always shows empty strings.
Here's an example of some records retrieved from this simple query:

Delete after trigger returns a NULL value for the old primary key??

I am creat an After trigger that I was using to delete a row from another table. However, the OLD value returned for my primary key is a NULL value. I have an UPDATE and an INSERT portion to this same trigger that work fine with just grabbing NEW values, but this OLD value cannot be grabbed for some reason, although it seems to work on other tables when the owner is me, the problem table is not owned by me though. Has anyone run into this before? Is there a view that I need access to from this table or perhaps a setting I need to turn on? I am at a loss. Thanks.

So the trigger has the OLD AKEY value when DELETING and it does successfully store it in the VARRAY.
Hence the problem is in that pl/sql block at the end.

Problem with select query when it returns a NULL value

Hi all,
I have a d/b table called QMEL and i picked VBELN from that table. Now if the VBELN value in that table is NULL i have to wtite an if condition.
Can i say it like this
IF VBELN = ' '.
write: enter into the if condition.
ELSE.
write: enter into the else condition.
ENDIF.
or should is say some thing else? my objective is ..i should execute some statments if VBELN has no value and i should execute some othet statements if VBELN has a value.
Kindly help..as even though i put above condition..it deosnot work

Dynamic configuration "null" value returned

I have reviewed the Michal blog and created a function to return the directory name, but it always returns a null value...

Null value in OA shuttle bean

Hi,
Can a shuttle have a null value.
ie the VO query attached to the shuttle returns null value.
and whenever we attach that particular shuttle to the page,on clicking on any LOV it gives the error

when I put a where clause to restrict the query (in this case it does not return any null value) I am not getting any error.

Actually, on page 1 itself the parameter value is null. After issueing a commit, the parameter has a correct value but without a commit, the parameter has a null value.
We are on 11.5.10 / RUP7.

Inserting a 'null' value in an IF THEN ELSE statement

I'm using Business Object webi XiR3
I'd like to return a 'null' value in certain cases for an IF THEN ELSE statement. Depending on if I format the field as a text or a number, I can return blanks ("") and zeros (0). However, what I really need to do is leave the field / column formatted as a number and return a 'null' value. You can see the variable below ... this will return a blank but the column is text.
Suggestions?

I don't think this is possible using a formula, as formulas deal with content, and images can be placed in cells only as 'image fill', which is Format, rather than Content.
Might be possible using an AppleScript, but I'm not the person to advise you on that.

Struts ActionForm bean retuning null values

Hello friends,
I am new to struts framework, I am trying a simple application which gets form details from user store it in ActionForm and showing in a jsp. Now the problem is when i try to get the bean values form the Action form it is returning only null values. but the values i entered in <html:form> is getting stored in the ActionForm.
I am very much confused with this problem.Your help is greatly appreciated

ORA-01405 in Pro*C Although no Column has NULL Value

I have a Pro*C program that fetch a cursor from Oracle 8.1.5 into host variables without indicators. I have tried the SQL statement and the SQL will never return any NULL value in any column, however I still got the ORA-01405 error. Any one has any clue?

Help. HTMLDocument.getElement(id) doesn't work, return me null.

Duplicate NULL values

It's a challenging question to all experts
Q1)
If we create an UNIQUE Key on a table Why it's accepting morethan one NULL value.
Q2)
If we use DISTINCT key word on a column that contains morethan one NULL value why it's displaying one NULL value.
Q3)
If we use UNION on a column that contains morethan one NULL value, why it returns one NULL value.
Q4)
If we write a query like this
SELECT * FROM emp WHERE comm IS NULL
Why it returns all the employes those contain no comm.
For 1st question some pleople are answering any NULL is not equal to other NULL value so that it accepting multiple NULL values.
For 2nd,3rd question some people are answering because DISTINCT and UNION eliminates duplicate values.
According to the first question answer how it is possible.
For 4th question answer some people are saying all the NULLs are equal so that it displaying all the employess which are having no commision.
Any One Plese help how NULL works in all four scenarios.

If it's a concatenated INDEX then the number of NULL values may be limited. See below for an example:

If it is the condition evaluates to true. You can't use WHERE COMM = NULL because you can't use an equality operator to compare NULL values.

I have a report that is showing facts for different months.
For some months there is no row in the facts table.
But in the report, I have to show a * when there is no data.
If there is a row in the facts table with null value for data, the conditional formatting successfully shows a * when data is null.
But when no row is present in the facts for a particular month , conditional formatting is unable to detect any null, as none exist.
How we can check that no rews returned for a particular month and then show *?

Null values returned when using request.getParameters(

I have a html form which allows the user to choose options and select a file to upload. When I use method=Post I get null values returned. When I use method=Get I get my parameter values fine.. but I get an error.
"Posted content type isn't multipart/form-data"
I would like to know why I am getting null values returned when using Post. I am using the following to get the values from the name=value passed to the servlet.

I have another form where the user can search information in a database that works just fine w/ either Get or Post

you could do it like this. in this case, you submit your form with the parameters (industry, company, collaboration), and upload your file at the same time. and in the target servlet, you can build your MultipartRequest object like this:
MultipartRequest multi = new MultipartRequest(request, temp_location, 50 * 1024);where variable temp_location stands for a temporatory diretory for file uploading.
and then you get your parameters, so you can build the directory with them. and after that, you can move your file to that directory using File.renameTo();
but as i've suggested in my previous posting, i just recommend you upload your file in a separate form. and then you can perform an oridianry doPost form submit with those parameters. or you may have problems with the file uploading. (this is just my personal experiences with Multipart).
there is one other thing i'd like to mention, file.renameTo() won't work if you need to move files to a network drive in windows. it won't work if you move files across file systems in unix.
