Decompressing video files using After effects

Hello!!
I have a SONY Full HD camcorder that records in an AVCHD format.
So when I import my clips into my computer's hard drive, they are compressed. That meens that I have to decompress them in order to work with the best quality.
So, I use After Effects to export the AVCHD clips totaly uncompressed (I export them into none compressed Quicktime files). Then I re-import the uncompressed Quicktime clips into After Effects and start working with them, adding effects, color correction and so on. When I finish, I export them again totally uncompressed, in order to import them to Premiere for the final editting. I do that because I do not own an Adobe production suite so that to use Adobe Link for transfering files from After Effects to Premiere.
I decompress all my AVCHD clips because I won't need to apply effects to all of them, so some will go straight to Premiere without passing through After effects, since there is no need. So they must be decompressed.
I have noticed that when I decompressed an AVCHD clip, it got 578 GB from 84GB. So when I re-imported the uncompressed 578 GB clip in After Effects and added some effects and color correction, the final clip got out 392GB, although I chose the uncompressed settings and although I added effects. Normally it should be more than 578 GB.
Would you happen to know why is that?
Do you have any other suggestion of how should I decompress my camcorder clips? I have Quicktime but I cannot play AVCHD files, since it is an unsupported format for Quicktime.
Thank you!!
Giannis

The default QT output uses the Animation CoDec, which is a visually lossless compression. No problem here and I think you are overdoing. There is nothing wrong with converting files e.g. to LZW compressed TIFFs, PNG or EXR files, all formats producing much smaller file sizes than QT files and without losing any info...

I'm new to after effects--I want to scale up a H.264 video file using bicubic. How do I do that?

Here is detail about the bicubic sampling option added in After Effects CC (12.0):

  • Using After Effects to Enhance 3D Animation Output

Check out the following Before/After clip that shows a 3D animated movie produced with Antics V3 and how Antics user, Tony Bannan, who is a compositor by trade, used After Effects to add a few lighting effects, motion blur, color grading and depth of field effects.
    http://www.previz.com.au/videorestricted/comparefolie.html
Tony won the Antics Medical Shorts Competition with this clip Folie a Duex and you'll see what can be achieved right out of the box with Antics, but you can also see how your After Effects skills can really allow you to produce stunning 3D animated movies.

You render images or movies from AE and import them into Flash itself, plain and simple. AE does not generate FLA files and in this case even the XFL format would not serve, either, as it does only transport transform animation. What kind of movie or image format you use is pretty much your choice, but naturally PNGs with Alpha or Flash Video with Alpha seem the most logical. Though, with PixelBender, you'd probably not care to even do that and code a respective simple box filter in flash...

  • Horrible final video quality in After Effects CS6 when rendering a 1920x1080 video with H.264 format

I've been using After Effects CS6 on my Macbook Pro for over a year now with no issues. However, today when I exported a video to be rendered in 1920x1080p with H.264 format, I got the worst quality final video I've ever seen. I filmed my video files in 1920x1080p (like usual), and I clicked all the same buttons I normally do to export a video, but every HQ video I try to export looks horrible. I haven't clicked any crazy buttons or anything out of the ordinary.
I always export a video following this sequence:
File > Export > Add to Render Queue > Lossless > H.264 (quality format) > video output (make sure it's checked) > audio output (make sure it's checked) > OK > Output to Desktop
My render settings are always set as "best settings" including "full" resolution and "best" quality.
Now, when I click H.264, a "settings mismatch" pops up and says:
"Warning: Output file will be resized from 1920x1080 (1.00 PAR) to 320x1080 (6.00 PAR) to meet format constraints"
The rendering quality and playback quality within After Effects is great, but once the video is exported, it is horrible.
PLEASE HELP?! I have deadlines I need to meet!

Use the H.264 encoding presets in Adobe Media Encoder.
The H.264 export features in After Effects have been removed in later versions because of numerous problems.

    Hey guys, when i use after effect tones of little LAV Splitters and Decoders open;
How do i get rid of this and what does it affect?

  • SWF File in After Effects

If one creates an animated symbol in flash, then nests that
another layer and creates a SWF file. The inner animation plays
correctly. If one imports that SWF file into After Effects the
    inner animation is not played.
Does anyone know how to get around this?

When I resize the video it looses quality and looks fuzzy.  How do I resize the .swf video within the new comp without loosing quality?
By not resizing it?! You are seeing normal behavior - when you scale up anything, the program needs to "invent" (extrapolate) pixels to fill in missing data, resulting in softening. There is no way around that. You can of course try to use effects like Sharpen to regain some sharpness, but there is no magic recipe. Even dedicated resizing plug-ins such as Red Giant's Instant HD or BorisFX' Resizer can only do so much. You will have to find other ways of dealing with this, if the bluriness is unacceptable to you, like rebuilding the stuff from original sources.

  • .AVI files into after effects do not work? how do I fix?

When I record with my vivitar dvr 840xhd camera, and try to import the files into after effects. The files import into after effects just fine, except the little icon of the video is all grey. But when I put it into the comp and try to view it. The whole video is only a black screen. I try to watch it and find out that the audio works in it. but not the video. Throwing it into media encoder and trying to convert it only does the same thing, just a black screen with audio. But when I play the file on windows media player it works just fine. I have After effects CS5 and I run windows 7. Anyone have any good anwsers? Perferably one that does not reqire another program video converter to put it into the file type I. I tryed that before with many other video converters. I either loose quaility. If im filming in 60fps, it is reduced to 30fps. I can only convert so much in one clip. And most leave watermarks. I would much rather be able to import these .avi files into after effects without the wait and annoyance of a 3rd party program. Thanks for the help.

Anyone have any good anwsers? Perferably one that does not reqire another program video converter to put it into the file type
Probably not. AVI is just a generic container format and without any more info we will not be able to give you any proper answers. Even their website doesn't give any specifics. Use GSpot or MediaInfo to find out what CoDecs it is using exactly. Since the camera is based on Flash memory, though, I already get this ugly feeling it is using some atrocious non-standard MPEG4 derivative nad that would mean there is no chance at all to use it directly in AE...

  • How to create editable .mov files from After Effects

    Hi,
I am creating videos for my clients using after effects.
The requirment is that they should be able to edit the .mov files e.g adding their company name, text or logo without using after effects without losing any effects.
    How can I accomplish this?

Editing video is not possible with Photoshop Elements.
Photoshop Elements is for photo editing
In order to edit videos , you should use Premiere Elements or Premiere Pro
However, Adobe does offer a combined package of Photoshop Elements and Adobe Premiere Elements, which might work perfectly for someone who just needs the most basic tools for editing both photos and video.

  • How to add video created in After Effects or Premiere  to a Captivate project?

I’m new to Captivate.  I received a .cpvc file which is basically a screen capture  of using a website. I can create animation of a company logo, and other effects using  After effects and I also have Premier.  I need to integrate this with the  .cpvc presentation.
What is the best way to do this with the minimum loss of quality of the content created with Captivate and After Effects or Premiere?

    Hi,
From your description, my understanding is that you want to use video tag in your Office 365.
You should check the video type in your issue, video tag only support mp4 file which you could refer to this article:http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_video.asp.

  • Exporting edited PE9 files into After Effects?

Is it possible to import edited Premiere Elements 9 files into After Effects to apply effects?
    Thanks in advance

    Steve,
I respectfully disagree on this point.
You can put an  uncompressed AVI into Premiere Elements and output an uncompressed AVI from Premiere Elements -- but the video is compressed a DV while it's in the program so there's no way to avoid the issue of compression
If one starts with DV-AVI, there is slight lossy compression, but PrE is natively editing that DV-AVI footage. Now, if one Exports/Shares to DV-AVI, again there is a slight lossy compression, but if they Export/Share to Lagarith, or UT, there is no loss, though there is compression. AE can work with the lossless material fine, so no need for it to re-compress, and no need to introduce loss. When one Exports from AE (no ADL - Adobe Dynamic Link between AE & PrE), again with a lossless CODEC, that IS turned into DV-AVI, when back in PrE, but two levels of lossy compression have been eliminated from the workflow, and eliminating any compression that is lossy is my goal for ultimate quality.
The beauty of Lagarith, or UT, is that the files are much smaller, than with AVI Uncompressed, so other than the encoding porttion of the workflow (both CODEC's are quite fast), the resources needed are greatly reduced.
An extreme example of the use of compressed material is where one produces a DVD (MPEG-2 CODEC, which IS highly-compressed), and then uses that compressed material in a new Project, outputting again to MPEG-2 for a DVD. If one can go to the material, before the first MPEG-2 Encoding, thus saving one level of compression, the qualtiy is much better. Again, this is an extreme example, and the DV/DVC CODEC in a DV-AVI is no where nearly so bad, as with MPEG-2.
Are the extra steps worth the effort? Only the user can determine that.
Just my observations, when creating and editing intermediate files. For me, the advantage outweighs the encoding time, as quality is as high, as I can obtain.

  • How can I use After Effects filters on a whole sequence without getting stuck in After Effects?

It appears that, with the options that are visible to the user, Dynamic Link only goes one-way and can't make round trips from Premiere Pro to After Effects and back again.  If I send a sequence to After Effects, that part works fine and I can do what I want and save the comp.  However, even though the comp appears as an asset in Premiere Pro, I am not allowed to do anything with it.  If I try to drag it to a new sequence, it just says no.  If I click "Create Sequence from Clip" it creates an empty sequence.
So how can I use After Effects on whole sequences/tracks instead of just on a clip-by-clip-by-clip-by-clip-by-clip basis?  is this possible?  For instance, if I have a whole sequence where I've neutralized the white balance, I might want to apply a warming filter to the whole thing as a unit.  That would be really painful with even a few clips to keep doing that again and again, and if you want to modify it slightly you have to do it over and over.  If there is a way to do that through Dynamic Link through some hidden option, what happens with the audio?  Would I have to cut it out of the lower sequence and paste it into the higher sequence with the After Effects comp as a video track?

I'm not an Adoby guy, hence you may ignore my reply, but Adobe Dynamic Link is obviously not just one way ticket and in most cases works just fine.
You have already been explained by J-MS and tclark513 how to properly use it and which pitfalls may occur.
So as to apply an effect onto a whole sequence or a group of clips you need to either nest them in PrPro or pre-compose them in AE. Then just apply an effect (or several ones) onto that composition.
So, if you nest clips in PrPro, select your nested sequence in the timeline, right-click and choose 'Replace with After Effects Composition'. Done! Your dynamically linked AE composition is in the right place in your timeline and in your Project panel as well. If you can not treat it as an ordinary footage, there are obviously some mistakes in your workflow.
If you didn't nest your sequence or a group of clips in PrPro before replacing them with AE composition, you may easily do it within AE. Just select all the layers in AE composition and choose Layer -> Pre-compose... (Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+C) Done! Switch back to your Master comp and apply your desired effect(s)
You may loose some effects or/and transitions while travelling from PrPro to AE via Adobe Dynamic Link, whereas you don't while travelling back
(If you start building your AE composition from scratch right in AE and then need to import it into PrPro, DO NOT export one as PrPro project out of AE, but rather choose Adobe Dynamic Link -> Import After Effects Composition... within PrPro)
P.S. And yes, submit a feature-request so that Adobe will convert 'Transparent Video' into fully functional 'Adjustment Layer'.

  • I can't see WMV files in After Effects CC since I installed the AE patch 12.0.1

I downloaded yesterday the Mac update called Maverik (OS X 10.9) and also the After Effects patch 12.0.1 in order to open AE using Maverik as operative system (before downloading the AE patch was impåossible to open After Effects CC). The problem now is that I was able before to see and edit window media files in After Effects but now, when I open the project that I've been working on, After Effects shows an error "After Effects error: file xxxx.wmv cannot be imported - this wmv file is damaged or unsupported". I am pretty sure that all the wmv files are not damage as Iø'e been working on these files the last couple of months. Besides  I have imported again the same wmv files from colleagues who can see and edit these files in After Effects CC for PC.
Would you please advice me on this? Should I download a codec or Adobe will resolve this issue with the next update for After Effects CC?
    Thanks in advance
    Sebastian

Can you open your WMV files in QuickTime Player?
After Effects on Mac does not read WMV files natively. You probably have the Flip4Mac QuickTime components installed, which allows QuickTime to read WMV files, and through that AE can read WMV files.
My guess is that Flip4Mac is either having problems on your machine after the upgrade to Mavericks, or it is not compatible with Mavericks. I didn't see any notices on Telestream's site, so I would guess the former.
