Default Environment layer ?

Hey, does anyone know how I can specify which Environment layer gets new objects if/when they're created by Track->Create Multiple... ?
I've played around with inserting and deleting layers, and I haven't yet found a reliable way to control where these new objects go.
Thanks!

JN, see my post in your other thread. I think there's something screwy going on with "create multiple".

    When I do it, it looks like this without the Environment layer effect attached:
    And this way then I apply the environment layer:
    Is there a way to select the image so it will maximize the quality of the image when the effect is applied. I tried  a stitched image of several photos done in PS, with a better outcome but still a lot of distortion.

    As Mylenium says, the environment layer's purpose is to provide reflections and such for 3D layers in a scene. The distortion that you're referring to is because the layer is being formed into a spherical shell surrounding the 3D scene so that reflections can come from any direction.
    If you want a layer to serve as both an environment layer and as a visible layer, you'd use two copies of the layer, with one set as an environment layer to appear in reflections only.

  • Change default new layer order - top to bottom

    By default Adobe Photoshop creates new layers on top of the current layer. In the Western languages we read from top to bottom and left to right. So when I start creating a web site in Photoshop I start from top to bottom as well. However Photoshop creates the new layer above the current, which is the opposite of what I would like to do. I need Photoshop to create new layrs below the current layer. I know by holding CTRL/COMMAND and clicking the NEW LAYER icon, will do what I need. However if I do CTRL+J to jump/dublicate the current layer, or select a layer and ALT+DRAG again to dublicate it, again it puts the new layers in top. Is there a way to reverse the default order Photoshop places layers? If not, I suggest that to Adobe implement an option in the general settings for Photoshop. Flash for example had similar option to read/place layers from top to bottom or bottom to top. Thanks!

    Trevor.Dennis, yes you are correct that perhaps the new layer MIGHT be hidden, but since I am asking such quesiton I am aware that this might happen. I see your point and why what I need is not the default option in Photoshop. However, for some (like me for example), it will still be a lot better of I could tweak that as an optional setting KNOWING what I am doing and the risk behind it.

  • Possible to customize/organize Environment Layer List?

    Hello everyone,
    I did a quick search for this topic on the forums but couldnt find anything (still havnt gotten the hang of apples search features I guess). I also couldnt find any info in the manual, so I'm hoping you wonderful Logic gurus can help me out!
    I'm currently redoing my Template to have access to all possible instruments/sounds, some of which require their own routing system with auxes, multi-instruments etc. Thus I have placed many of these instruments in their own layers (i.e. Stylus RMX layer, Kontakt 2 multi layer, DKFH multi layer, MIDI Instruments layer, etc). The problem is that the layers are listed by "last created" in the environment while alphabetical in the arrange listings, which always makes me "double take" when looking for an instrument quickly (which can be quite distracting).
    Is it possible to organize the layers listing by either make the environment list alphabetical or better yet put them in "custom order?" I guess in worse case I can use numbers to correspond with the "last created" method implied by the environment, but thats not a very good organizational method IMO.
    Thanks in advance for any help/tips you can provide on keeping your environment organized!

    I suggest creating your new layers starting from the bottom of the layers list as it currently exists. You can create new layers in one of two ways:
    • selecting *CREATE* from the layers list. This ALWAYS creates a new layer at the bottom of the list (keeping in mind that the *create* thing will always be the last thing in the list regardless)
    ==OR==
    • selecting an existing layer and using the Environment's local menu Options>Layer>Insert. The behavior of this function is such that it will always insert the new layer ABOVE the one you've previously selected
    A few fine points:
    • The ALL OBJECTS layer cannot be moved or deleted. It is "protected".
    • You can hide the ALL OBJECTS layer by unchecking the option in Prefs>Display>Other
    • The order of the layers in the Environment cannot be changed once created. The only way to accomplish this is by inserting a new layer at the desired position, cutting (I don't recommend copying) all of the objects from original layer and pasting them into your new layer. However, don't attempt a mass transfer of multiple objects from one layer to another in a song where you've already got lots of music recorded. You could be in for a nightmare. But if you need to do this because you absolutely need to be more organized for your work, cut/paste the objects one at a time from original layer to destination layer. It's possible I'm being over-cautious here, but I've just had too many nightmares in the past. So the above is a conservative approach.

  • [AS] Making "keep overrides" the default graphic layer option for all placed graphics?

    If I relink thisLink when it is missing, and update link option was set to keep overrides, everything is fine. But if it was set to application settings, I am in a world of hurt, because suddenly all my Unit numbers will show 1-32 piled on top of each other (all layers visible in Photoshop) or the wrong one (just one layer visible in Photoshop) or nothing at all!
    The catch-22 is that until I relink missing links, update link option only shows "unknown" as the result. Arrrgh?
    set myLinks to every link whose status = missing
    repeat with thisLink in myLinks
        get update link option of graphic layer options of parent of thisLink
            -->Returns "unknown" instead of "application settings" or "keep overrides"
        try
            set update link option of graphic layer options of parent of thisLink to "keep overrides"
            relink thisLink to newLinkPath
            update thisLink
        on error
            -->This always errors on the set update link option line
        end try
    end repeat
    Anyone know a way around this or should I just change my name to Yossarian?
    Thanks in advance,
    Eric.

    Well, I give you points for creativity! Unfortunately, relink is destructive and overwrites any info with the default (which in CS2 is application settings).
    What really kills me is that InDesign has some Sooper Seekrit internal list that only the Links palette knows about. So if you *manually* try and relink the document and then revert it, it automatically relinks against all the paths you've tried since launching it and therefore, the second time all the links show as linked and the process is non-destructive, unlike the "relink" command.
    Argh.
    I will think on it some more though. Thanks for your input!
    PS: Adobe apparently broke the ability to relink against a string in CS4 from what I can tell. In spite of the fact that the dictionary specifically lists alias or string or string (yes, says or string twice in the dictionary), only alias really seem to work.
    So...
    set newLinkFolder to "" & path to home folder & "Pictures:"
    set newLinkPath to newLinkFolder & name of thisLink
    try
    relink thisLink to newLinkPath
    on error
    display dialog "FAIL!"
    end try
    try
    relink thisLink to newLinkPath as alias
    on error
    display dialog "No fail. You'll never see this message!"
    end try

    While we're on the subject of variables...

    Hi,
    Command History (vi mode)
    The fc command: a brief history lesson
    Take a look at the fc (fix command) man page. This command works almost exactly like the fc
    command in bash. You feed it the number of your
    previous history command and its execution is repeated. This command was actually introduced as
    history in the C shell, but has evolved
    since. By default, fc allows you to edit your previous commands with the ed editor (which can be
    changed by modifying the FCEDIT shell variable.
    Clearly, the Korn shell's command line editing features are more advanced and easier to use,
    however, there are three such cases where fc can be handy:
    Case 1: Repeating the Last Command Explicitly
    You may already be familiar with the fc operator "r" (bash/csh equivalent is "!!") which is a built-in
    alias that repeats the last command issued.
    Of course, if you prefer to use the !! syntax, you can use the following alias:
    alias !!='fc -e -'
    Case 2: Repeating the Last Command with Replacement
    If you're repeating the last command with only a slight modification, fc works great also. For
    example, suppose you ran this command:
    mv app-09.26.00.log oldlogs
    And you also want to move the file app-09.25.00.log to the oldlogs directory. In this case, you
    could use fc to accomplish your goal in less keystrokes.
    fc -e - 26=25
    or, you could use the Korn shell shortcut like this:
    r 26=25
    or even using the alias specified above:
    !! 26=25
    Case 3: [ESC]-v and Full vi Editing
    Alternatively, you can edit the entire command line with vi using the "v" command. This type of
    editing can be especially helpful for editing "for"
    or "while" loops that span multiple lines. This is actually another fc alias that edits the current line in
    full screen vi mode. However, since the
    command is executed immediately upon exiting vi, you should pay extra attention to the command
    syntax, especially when editing commands as root.
    Command Line Editing in vi Mode
    Instead of using fc to edit your previous commands, it's usually easier to use ksh built-ins in vi
    mode.
    You can use vi mode by setting the option like this:
    set -o vi (when in ksh already) OR ksh -o vi (when launching a ksh shell)
    In this mode, you'll want to get familiar with a few commands:
    Previous Command
    ---->
    [ESC]-k
    Use this key combination to access your
    previous command
    Next Command
    ---->
    [ESC]-j
    Use this key combination to access your
    next command (if applicable)
    Filename
    Completion
    ---->
    [ESC]-
    Use this key combination to complete a
    filename, or partial portion thereof
    Filename Check
    ---->
    [ESC]-=
    Use this key combination to show which
    files would complete the command at this
    point
    Caveats:
    There is no command completion in ksh88, though there is in ksh93.
    There is no tab completion in ksh88, though there is in pdksh and ksh93
    To use tab-complete in pdksh, you may need to use set -o vi-tabcomplete
    To use tab-complete in ksh93 you may need to use set -o viraw
    Commands can be editing using the standard vi editing keys, however, the arrow keys are not
    standard vi editing keys.
    There is no way (that I have discovered) to use arrow keys in ksh88
    Arrow keys should work fine in pdksh
    Arrow keys in ksh93 may need special key-bindings to work. Some samples are available
    here from www.kornshell.com.
    Finally, you can also find the last command you typed that included a certain string. This can often
    be faster than searching through
    previous command lines one at a time. To do so, use the syntax
    [ESC]-/string
    where string is the text string you're searching for. You can also use the "N" and "n" to move
    forward and backward in your searches, respectively.
    Other ksh Interactive Features (vi mode)
    Command-line Editing
    In conjunction with recalling your previous commands, you can also edit these commands.
    A subset of the most common editing commands are listed below.
    Forward One Character
    ---->
    [ESC]-l
    Backward One Character
    ---->
    [ESC]-h
    Delete One Character
    ---->
    [ESC]-x
    Replace One Character
    ---->
    [ESC]-r
    Forward End of Word
    ---->
    [ESC]-e
    Backward Beginning of Word
    ---->
    [ESC]-b
    Delete to End of Line
    ---->
    [ESC]-D
    Insert Text (current space)
    ---->
    [ESC]-i
    Insert Text (adjacent space)
    ---->
    [ESC]-a
    Move Cursor to Beginning of Line
    ---->
    [ESC]-^
    Move Cursor to End of Line
    ---->
    [ESC]-$
    Note: The [ESC] key is not necessary if you are currently in command-mode.
    Job Control
    Job control under the Korn shell actually works identically to job control under the bash shell.
    However, since its a very useful
    interactive shell feature, I'll summarize its uses here.
    Suppose for example you want to watch the system messages on a Solaris box, you might run this
    command:
    # tail -f /var/adm/messages
    But perhaps something isn't logging correctly and you need to make some changes to
    /etc/syslog.conf. You decide to send ^Z (suspend)
    to your tail process like this:
    ^Z[1] + Stopped (SIGTSTP) tail -f /var/adm/messages
    You still want the process to run however, so using the number in brackets, you send the process to
    the background like this:
    # bg %1
    [1] tail -f /var/adm/messages&
    Now, you're free to make your syslog changes, and when you're ready to return to your tail process
    you've forgotten which job it was.
    In this case, you would use the jobs command to see which jobs are tasked to the current shell like
    this:
    # jobs
    [3] + Stopped (SIGTSTP) ls -al /dev | more
    [2] - Stopped (SIGTSTP) find / 2>&1 > /dev/null
    [1] Stopped (SIGTSTP) tail -f /var/adm/messages
    Once you know what the job number is, you can return the job to the foreground using the
    command:
    # fg %1
    tail -f /var/adm/messages
    Note that if the job number is not specified the most current active job, indicated by the "+" is
    the default job. So, fg with no arguments would bring job 3 to the foreground.
    Alternatively, if you wanted to kill the job at this point, this could be accomplished by using
    the kill command in the following manner:
    # kill %1
    [1] + Terminated tail -f /var/adm/messages
    Thus, we can easily see how useful job control can be, especially if you have a limited number of
    login shells available.
    Revert back.
    Thanks.

  • Default environment for user Oracle when launched from Scheduler?

    Hi:
    This is probably pretty basic but I haven't found the answer yet. I'm trying to run an import job using imp from Scheduler. I've modified the file $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin/externaljob.ora so that the jobs are running as user oracle. If I echo the result of 'whoami' in the program it indeed says I'm oracle, but ORACLE_HOME etc. are not set. Is this intentional? I would think that it runs the .bashrc etc. to get the proper environment for the user.
    Thanks.

    You can not rely on any variable set in the environment.

  • Locking/protecting environment values ?

    The manual recommends that you never assign two audio objects to the same channel.
    Wow... I did that by accident today, and it's horribly confusing. I created two channel strips assigned to the same output track, and it's a mess--you get two channel strips with different names, so they look like two different objects in the track mixer, but they're effectively the same object. Any changes to one of the objects (fader, pan, insert, etc.) take effect on both objects.
    I can't think of a reason why anyone would ever want this behavior. Maybe someone else can ? Actually, I don't really understand what is to be gained by having an adjustable channel assignment for a track object, anyway. Is there some power here that I'm not seeing ? Would Logic lose functionality if it forced all track objects to be assigned to unique channels ?
    I'm new to Logic, so I'm looking for any tips in how to avoid shooting myself in the foot with arrange tracks, audio objects, and output channels.
    As best I can tell, once I create a track assigned to an audio object, I am almost never going to want to change that audio object assignment. And I can't see why I would EVER want to change the output channel assigned to a track object.
    Is there some way to lock these settings so they aren't easily changed by an errant mouse click in the arrange window ? I want to leave the object parameters visible so I can change the instrument name easily, but having those object and channel settings immediately available to be changed seems like a problem waiting to happen. If either of those settings gets changed to match another arrange track, I'm likely to have what are effectively overlapping regions, so I'll stop hearing regions that are still visible in the arrange window.
    Is there any way to lock these settings so they can't be screwed up once they're set ?
    Alternatively, is there any way to get Logic to identify audio objects that are incorrectly assigned to the same output channel ? And is there any way to get Logic to identify audio regions that aren't literally "overlapping" on the same arrange track, but are nevertheless still effectively "overlapping" because they're assigned to the same audio object ? I'd like to be confident that everything I see in the arrange window is actually going to play, and it seems like there are a bunch of ways this can go wrong.
    I'm new to Logic, and I'm still getting a feel for the workflow--thanks for any tips!

    I was also wondering if it made sense to rename the
    environment object, or just add a track name. It
    seems
    like it will be less confusing to keep the
    environment
    object as created: Audio 1, Audio 2, Instrument 1,
    Instrument 2.
    That's the way I like it, but other tastes differ. I
    like to know on what and where I'm putting my audio,
    but I have seen other people not care about this -
    they just find a free track, regardless of where it
    is and of they go.
    Interesting--my concern is that since the output channels can still be changed easily, the default instrument names (Audio 1, Audio 2, etc.) seem less useful to me. i.e. your object might be called "Audio 1," but that doesn't necessarily bear any relation to anything physical inside or outside the computer. Maybe I'm not conscientious enough about managing my tracks, but the way I see it, I really shouldnly RELY on the instrument names to reflect channel assignments if this is something that I (or any musician touching the computer during a break...) can easily screw up. I'm leaning toward naming the objects with typical track names ("Lead VOX," etc.), especially since that gives me meaningful audio file naming without the need for separate track names (Use Audio Object Name for File Name).
    But, the saving grace in all of this for me may be "Create Multiple..."
    "Create Multiple" does exactly what I WISH "Create with Next Instrument" would do (too bad the names are ambiguous): "Create Multiple" creates a new track (or several) with an unused instrument--it grabs an object out of the Environment if one exists, and it creates a new object if the Environment doesn't have one. Perfect! ("Create with Next Instrument" may or may not assign an unused instrument--that's not very useful in my opinion... seems to me that when you need a new track, you very clearly want either a used instrument or an unused instrument--you don't want uncertainty, or to have to reference the Environment to see what instruments exist...)
    Anyway, since I found I can set the default inputs and outputs for objects in the "Audio Configuration," I'm thinking maybe there isn't much point in having extra objects in the Environment at all. Just use "Create Multiple" to create a new track, and you automatically get a new, unused output object. Simple. And the "Create" command works great when you want a new "take" for an existing instrument.
    As a new user to Logic, I was left with the impression that the "right" way to work is to create enough objects in the Environment to handle most expected work. But for audio and instrument tracks, personally, I'm thinking it's WAY less confusing just to use "Create Multiple" to create tracks and objects only as I need them, rather than to start with a "big job" environment as created by the Setup Assistant.
    Hey, this frustrated me for a while, and I found a solution that is working for me, so I thought I'd share, in case anyone else finds it useful.
    There is one problem, though--I haven't figured out how to control which Environment layer gets the objects made by "Create Multiple"... I'll post a separate question about that.
    Thanks for all the advice, Bee Jay, and iSchwartz!

  • Can Automation be used to send User-defined CC's to Environment objects?

    Hi, this is probably a really dumb question but I'll ask it anyway:
    I've bought a controller-environment for a synth (Alphajuno2, PG300 programmer) for Logic, the faders in the environment layer use sysex to communicate with the synth.
    Apparently it is possible to map an external midi-controller to these environment-faders, and that's all and fine, but what I'm after is a method of using automation to control the environment-faders. How would I go about doing it?
    I've only ever really automated some volume changes or plugin parameter changes, I've not yet automated faders in the environment, so how would I go about doing it?
    Would I create a fader which I'd link to the sysex-sending fader, and automate the fader, or maybe an environment-monitor (and add it to the arranger) and somehow configure a set of CC#'s to be automated with that arranger object, and then just cable them up to the various Sysex-sending faders (I do know enough to be able to set the input of those sysex-faders to match the CC#'s which the automation would be sending).
    Is this kind of "User-defined CC#'s in Automation" possible? How should I go about it?
    Message was edited by: esaruoho to further clarify it

    Is it just because there is currently no way whatsoever of Automation CC, and I should have known to use Hyper Draw to talk to an Environment object directly, which would then be connected to the Faders of choice?

  • Can I set a "default color" for new layers?

    I find myself constantly changing the color of new layers back to my favorite: Magenta. Is there a way to just make this the default new layer color?
    I understand the reasoning of using different colors for each layer, but so many standard colors do not preview well, with the artwork, I find them useless. I'd just as soon use one color.

    I have a hotkey for an action creating a new layer but unfortunately the layer color option cannot be recorded in the action. What I do is create a bunch of layers I would eventually need, select all of them in the Layers panel and double click on the selection to open the options dialog where I can change the layer color for all at once.

  • Unlocking Background layer

    I am making a collage of pictures and realized I had added a number of pictures directly onto the background without creating separate layers. When I wanted to move some of them, I couldn't because the background is locked.Is there a way to unlock the background so I don't have to redo it?Abbey

    Abbey,
    To unlock the Background layer, simply double-click it and rename it to something other than "Background". The default name "Layer 0" is sufficient.
    But I'm a bit confused. You say you already added some items to the background? Since these are not layers I'm guessing they are permanent and unlocking the Background won't buy you anything.
    I find it good practice to first duplicate the Background layer, turn off it's visibility, and start working from the duplicate layer. This way the orignal will still be there in an emergency.

  • How Do I Import Multi Instrument/Environment Page From Lp7 Into LP8?

    I've just started using LP Studio and I'm trying to use the multi instrument setup that I have in LP7 but I cannot find a way to import or copy them into 8.
    Any idea/help will be greatly appreciated.

    You do it the same way you did in L7.
    In the Environment choose Options > Import Environment > Layer and it will ask you to lead it to the L7 project/song you wish to import it from and choose the layer.

  • Environment question for experts...

    Is it possible to save an environment layer, for example a multichannel VI setup, to then import into another song?
    Thanks...

    You can't save an individual Environment layer (as "in a discreet Environment file"), but as the previous poster said, you can copy and paste Environment elements between two open songs (make sure "hide inactive songs" is unchecked in your prefs).
    Note, however, that you can't copy/paste the layer itself; you can only copy/paste the objects in a layer between songs. If you want to create a similarly named layer in your target song, use the Create New Layer function in the Environment and then re-name it. Note also that you can't change the order in which the layers are listed in the Environment. So if you create a new layer, it will always appear as the bottom-most layer in the layer list. You can't move it inbetween existing layers or move it to the top.
    On the flip side, you can import whole, individual layers from one song into another using the import functions available within the Environment (and the song from which the layer is imported does not have to be open). But depending on what you're trying to do you may end up with huge headaches. The import functions are not only a bit hard to understand, but they're buggy in some respects.
    So post what you're trying to do exactly and I'm sure people will chime in as to whether you're better off copying/pasting or using the import layer function.
