Default keys in window menu-Gnome Shell 3.14

Hi,
On any active window, hitting Alt+Space will show the window menu. This part is working on latest gnome Shell version too. But, in earlier versions, hitting 'c' after the window menu is shown by Alt+Space combination would close the window which is not working in Gnome Shell 3.14. Other default keys such as 'x' for maximize etc are not working either. Is this the default behaviour? If so, is there some seeting or some work around to get the old behaviour back?
Thanks,

window menu is managed by gnome-shell in 3.14, while previously i twas handled by gtk: http://worldofgnome.org/shell-is-now-ma … nus-sweet/
they probably missed this functionality during the transition.
you should open a bug for gnome about this

  • [solved] Undecorate a single window in Gnome Shell

Is there a convenient way to toggle the WM decorations (specifically the title bar) off and on in Gnome for one specific window?
I'm trying to play an old game in wine that only has static resolution options and it crashes if you try to edit the options in the save files. unfortunately the 2nd-largest option is pretty small on my 1080p 14" laptop monitor and the largest option puts me about 20px off the bottom of the screen. I could regain these 20+ pixels if I could toggle the title bar off once I get the game going.
Does anyone know how I could do this? Googling for this is a little difficult since the results are polluted by people who are trying to undecorate maximized windows (by editing the GTK theme and I don't want such an invasive/wide-bore solution).

Thanks to your tip and some google, I've improved my answer.
The game I'm playing is being run in a wine virtual desktop, so the window title is "Default - Wine desktop"
I found this blog: http://mathematicalcoffee.blogspot.com/ … mised.html which details how to set the WM hints on windows with xprop. I hacked together my own solution in the form of this script:
    if [[ $1 == "undec" ]] ;
    then
    xprop -name "Default - Wine desktop" -f _MOTIF_WM_HINTS 32c -set _MOTIF_WM_HINTS "0x2, 0x0, 0x0, 0x0, 0x0"
    else
    xprop -name "Default - Wine desktop" -f _MOTIF_WM_HINTS 32c -set _MOTIF_WM_HINTS "0x2, 0x0, 0x1, 0x0, 0x0"
    fi
Running it with "undec" undecorates the window, running it with anything else redecorates it.
Caveat: if you redecorate the window, sometimes the window stops responding to keyboard input. Mouse still works. This isn't an issue for me since I won't be redecorating the game until I'm done playing, and I can still alt-tab and stuff. Restarting gnome (with alt+f2 and running 'r') might fix it as well, but I didn't check yet.

  • Gnome 3.8 - nautilus crashes gnome-shell

Hi, I have a problem on two users where by once opening nautilus, the shell crashes and then re-blinks in and recovers some times, and sometimes I get a grey screen saying I need to logout. I did a complete removal of gnome 3.6, and then removed all config files in my home folder:
    .gnome2
    .config/gnome-session
    .config/dconf
    .config/gconf
    .config/nautilus
    .config/gtk[2,3]
cant remember them all exactly but I'm pretty sure I have stock settings, I could create a new user to confirm. Will do that tomorrow.

  • Gnome-Shell functionality in Openbox?

    Hey,
i just tried out gnome3 and i really liked some of its features.
I particularly liked that you could "switch desktop modes" from normal viewing/working to (re-)arranging windows (which are sized down to have a nice overview of all open windows) on workspaces by moving the mouse to the top left corner.
Do you know of a way to emulate similar behaviour in Openbox?
Anything that comes close, really. As long as it gives me the option to
    a) get an overview of all open windows _simultaneously_ (alt+tab doesn't quite do it for me)
    b) maybe let me arrange those windows in workspaces
Doesn't have to be as pretty

enable a composite manager, a good one for open box is cairo-compmgr
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Cairo_Compmgr
When installed and running I believe win+e key shows all windows like gnome-shell or compiz-fusion

  • DPMS/Screen blanking not working in gnome-shell

The title pretty much sums it up. I've tried setting screen blanking in gnome-control-center->power, but it doesn't seem to work. However DPMS has worked in pretty much every other WM I've tried by default.
I've installed gnome-shell and gnome-control-center. Not using gdm.
I've tried 'xset -dpms' which apparently should've helped at least in earlier gnome releases, but it makes no difference on my system.
Any ideas what could be causing this?

    \hbar wrote:
Could you be more specific so as to what does not work? Is it the automatic screen blanking, or just plain screen blanking? If you run
    xset dpms force off
    does the screen turn off?
I want my screen to turn off automatically when system is not in use, so I've enabled the automatic screen blanking from gnome settings.
That command turns my monitor off fine, but doesn't happen automatically when system is idle like it does in other WMs
\hbar wrote:Also 'xset -dpms' disables dpms, so I don't understand how that would help.
Apparently there's been an issue where xserver's dpms settings get in gnome's way, and disabling dpms with xset has helped some people in arch forums and others. Although if I'm not mistaken that issue should be fixed already.

  • [SOLVED] Gnome Shell remove top rounded corners

There's something that lets me down with Gnome Shell's design: the rounded/circular borders on the top left and right corners of every single window on Gnome Shell.
Does anybody know how I can change this, and make them rect? Or at least rectangular on maximized windows.
    Thank you!

I don't want a new theme, I like Adwaita, but I just needed this changed, thank you so much! I just put the radius to 0px.

  • Gnome shell, media keys and strange X11 cursor bihaviour

    Hi guys,
I'm new in this forum, but old arch-user. This time I'm experimenting a really strange issue.
I have a lot of packages installed (pacman, but AUR too), and I tried some beta packet, so I don't know if this issues is caused by me, or is a sort of out-of-the-box, but this is what happens:
During Gnome-Shell session (3.16.2 actually), if I press any media keys (my keyboard has prev-next song, play/pause, stop, vol up-down) my cursor goes hidden (all works, but I can't see pointer). If I'm in empty desktop (no opened window), after 20~50pixel in any direction I can meet again my mouse. Instead, if I have some windows open...random behavior...cursor could reappear after 50pixel mouse movement, or it could stay hidden after 4-5Kpixel. The only way to get cursor again in short time is go to gnome overview (the function linked with super key or upper-left corner, by default).
    Additional strange facts:
    - mouse is working all the time (link is focused, button is pressed, focus follow mouse event, and so on...)
    - seems gnome top bar get same effect as empty desktop (20~50pixel and cursor is visible again)
    - if I link key combination with media function (Ctrl + Up/Down for volume, for example), everything goes well
    - I have a secondary bluetooth keyboard with same media keys, but this peripheral is not affected by this issue
Any additional informations will be provided, but first, I did my homework:
    - main keyboard: Thermaltake Tt eSPORTS Challenger Ultimate
    - secondary keyboard: Logitech diNovo Mini
    - main mouse: Kensington Expert Mouse
    - secondary mouse (secondary keyboard has build-in touchpad): Logitech diNovo Mini
    - tertiary mouse: Logitech G9x
    - Gnome shell: 3.16.2
    - X.Org: 1.17.1
    - Kernel: 4.0.4-2-ARCH
    - Nvidia-driver (beta from AUR): 352.09  --- GPU: GeForce GTX 780

    Thanks in advance

    Got is sorted myself.
I installed KDE which worked perfectly. Then went about trying to install chromium. After installing and trying to launch chromium I noticed it would just hand unless launched by root (terminal).
Which led me to check permissions under /home.
Turns out that somehow my /home/{me}/.config directory was owned by root:root  . A simple chown -R ~/.config  and a reinstall of gnome got everything working fine
NB: maybe someone with more insight can figure how/why ~/.config was owned by root from a fresh install and setup of systemd ??

  • Thunderbird window disappears after GNOME Shell restart

When restart GNOME Shell with Alt f2+r, thunderbird window disappears and leaves a process you cannot kill.

You are using a theme which does'nt support gnome 3.10 yet.
Try using the default Adwaita theme.
Looks like you are using Zukitwo, try this Zukitwo beta theme for 3.10

  • Gnome-shell: black windows with nvidia

    Hello,
gnome-shell with nvidia makes black windows when there are lots of windows (5-6 windows).
When the window is black, I can resize the window to a little size and window show fine, but if I resize big it show again black. At times, the window is completely corrupted, random information in black and white. If I close some windows, everything returns to normal.
With gnome2 (compiz or metacity) I had not this problem.
I have not found any similar issue in the bugs section. Any advice?
    Two captures of this issue:

With nouveau driver everything appears corrupt.
In the past, when I used the nouveau driver in gnome2 with compiz, the desktop was only slightly slower but functional.
I have logged again and I have reproduced the error of black windows for a better log messages (sorry for the log messages in Spanish):

  • Help:  How to add a library item to hide the default Window menu

    Hi,
In this post: Help: How to add a library item to hide the default Window menu, it described how to create an menu that will hide the default window menu.
I'd like to know if there a way to put this component into library so that others can directly inherit this menu in other FORMS and how to implement it.
    Jimmy

    Hi,
I found the solution and the post was not properly phrased. There is no need to add menu into library. All we need is to put the compiled menu into Oracle AS and add the menu name the menu module of the given form.
    Thanks.
    Jimmy

  • What is the default key command for the COMMAND key?I seem to have changed it somehow along the way and now when I push the command key it hides all windows or shows desk top I need to correct this as soon as possible-.any ideas?

What is the default key command for THE COMMAND (apple) key? I seem to have changed it somehow along the way and now when I push the command key (only) it hides all open windows and shows the desk top and when I push it again it shows all windows again...I need to return to default A.S.A.P. just this one key...Any ideas? Thanks in advance...

    Go to
     > System Preferences > Keyboard
Click on the 'Keyboard' tab and hit the 'modifier keys...' button. You can see and change the defaults there.
As I'm not sure if all the labels are the same in Lion, he's a screenshot from Snow Leopard. It should be similar enough:

  • Help: How to get rid off the default Window menu from FORM screen?

    Hi,
I am working on a FORM application. On the very top left of the FORM screen, there is a default Window menu with:
    Cascade
    Tile Horizontally
    Tile Vertically
    etc.
The end user will never use it for this application. To make the screen look nicer, is there a way to hid or get rid off it?
Also if possible, I want to hid or get rid off very top "Oracle Developer Forms Runtime - Web"
    Thanks.
    Jimmy

Also if possible, I want to hid or get rid off very top "Oracle Developer Forms Runtime - Web"I see you are running with separate frame. In the When-new-form-instance trigger, use
    Set_Window_Property(Forms_MDI_Window, Title, "xyz" );
    to change the window title.

  • [GNOME Shell] Switch default browser for "overview" search

Have anyone been able to do this?
Using Chromium as my default browser, entering a search string in the Overview Panel still only grants the option of searching with Epiphany. As far as I'm able to tell it seems defaulting to Epiphany is hardcoded into GNOME Shell, but please tell me I'm wrong...
    Cheers,
    Kristian

Does that for me too. Very strange that GNOME Shell does not respect the GNOME default application web browser setting?

Is it enough to delete .gconf in home folder?

I think gnome-shell also uses something called dconf. The only folder I see though is "~/.config/dconf"
Maybe instead of deleting just move the file somewhere else just in case.
