Definitive Word On ID3 Tags, Library Files & Which Data Is Stored Where...

I have spent a few hours just now (and have read the discussions a lot previously) on various iTunes issues, namely ones pertaining to organization and storage of data & info. I still have quite a few questions I would like the definitive answers for. If anyone knows for sure, thanks in advance for your response!
1) Is there any difference between how and where iTunes stores data for audio (mp3, m4a, aif, etc.) files vs. movie (mpg, mp4, mov) files, and if so, what are they?
2) In the info tabs/panes of tracks in iTunes, is the entered data stored in separate places? i.e., the info under the INFO pane stored in the individual media file itself while that in the OPTIONS pane stored in the main library file? Also, did I read correctly that Convert ID3 Tags causes more of the library file data to be embedded in the media file itself? (Not desirable of course, because each play would in effect "modify" the file as if it had changed and needed to be resynched, since play count is part of the data).
3) Is there a difference between where editable data (artist, title, equalizer setting, genre, rating, etc.) is stored vs uneditable data such as play count, date added, last played, etc.?
4) Is there a list somewhere online that shows what data is stored in the library file (settings unique to the iTunes) and what is universally in the standard ID3 tag in the media file itself?
5) Is it safe to assume that rating, equalizer, volume, remember position and start/stop time settings for each individual track are not in the ID3 tag but only in the library file? If so, one can then assume that merely copying the library file will preserve these settings?
6) Are ID3 tags applied and applicable to movie and audio files similarly, and do they further differ how & if they are used among each file type (mp3, m4a, aif, wav, mpg, mp4, mov, etc.)? I know with movies you cannot set or change the poster frame in mpg (muxed) files, for example.
7) I do all my iTunes importing, editing, managment, etc. on my PowerMac desktop, with the prefs, library and xml files stored in my home folder on the PowerMac's OS drive and the large media files store on an attached ext. 500 GB FW drive. If I use a synching program to continuously keep the library/xml files the same on my iBook laptop's home folder and the media files the same on another ext. 160 GB FW drive, then when I use the iBook with the 160 GB at different events it should operate exactly the same a when using my PowerMac at home with the 500 GB? The only thing I should have to change is the location of the iTunes folder in the Prefs on the iBook to point to the 160 GB, right?
8) Finally, now that iTunes 7 allows you to indicate sort order ("The Beatles" can now appear under "B" without writing "Beatles, The" as I have been) would it retain that sort when importing the song list into other database programs or even an iPod, or would it default back to "T"? (AppleWorks database has a similar feature where you can specify an ARTIST field which sorts by first letter of last word, but won't stay that way in other programs).
PHEW! ...long post I know, but I spent a lot of time reading and hopefully over time I can get the answers to most (or even all) of these questions. Thanks!!!
PowerMac G4/500 MHz (1 GB); iBook G4/1.33 GHz (1.5 GB)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   (still using 10.3.9 Panther on PowerMac)

I read this on the ID3 site:
ID3 tags were designed with the MP3 file format in mind. ID3v2 tags will break formats which are container-based such as Ogg Vorbis and WMA. Here is some information on specific formats:
ID3 tags work in MP3 and MP3pro files
WAV has no tags
WMA has its own tagging format, which is specified in the wma spec, available in the MSDN (which unfortunately, basically does not allow Open Source implementations)
Ogg Vorbis uses "Xiph Comments" (same as later versions of FLAC and Speex), which are embedded into the Ogg container. You can find information on these in the comment and container specs on www.xiph.org
AAC uses yet another tagging format, which does not at present have a published spec as of 3/1/2006.
So since I rip in AAC, does that mean the tags work differently, are stored differently or offer different editable info? Also, I found nothing regarding tags for video files as I mentioned in my question. Within iTunes I am assuming all the information you may edit or view when you Get Info for each file is not all stored together: some is in the file's ID3 tag and others in the iTunes Library file. I guess you are always safe if you keep back-ups of your media files and library files, even if you don't always know which info resides where.
I found a complete list of frames (fields) that are available in ID3v2 at the following link, many not available in iTunes, but the site lists other apps that allow you to edit tags for both Mac & Windows.
http://www.id3.org/Frames
I am curious, if you use another app to edit the tag with a frame not offered in iTunes, will it still work in iTunes (like if you use the frame for synchronized lyrics; since it is part of the tag itself will they show up when played in iTunes even though not editable in iTunes)?

    You can, but how are you going to back up those other files?  When (not if) your Time Capsule fails, you risk losing them.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for details.
    Then can i access these files only on the time capsule without connecting it?
    Not sure what you mean.  You have to connect a computer, either via Ethernet cable or wirelessly, to read or write to the disk.

  • ITunes "grouping" tag - ID3 tags and file rewriting

    From Wikipedia's entry about ID3 tags:
    "ID3v2.2 and 2.3 require that the tag data precede the file. Whilst for streaming data this is absolutely required, for static data it means that the entire audio file must be updated to insert data at the front of the file. For initial tagging this incurs a large penalty as every file must be re-written."
    So what I'm wondering, essentially, is whether the "grouping" tag in iTunes is a part of the ID3 tag information, which would mean that altering this tag necessitates re-writing the entire file. I don't like the idea of this, because I'd be paranoid/anal about the possibility of introducing errors in the process. However, I'd love to use the "grouping" tag for creating smart playlists. So does anyone have any more information about this tag? Thanks.

    iTunes uses the TPE2 frame tag for grouping. This is also known as the 'Band/Orchestra/Accompaniment' frame which is included in the list you linked to. This isn't a guess - I've been playing about with dnuos and querying id3 tags in mp3 files. I can confirm it is a id3v2 frame.
    As to having to re-write the entire file. Yes this is likely but the id3v2 standard also covers padding which can be used to avoid a complete re-write in these situations. Whether or not this happens in the case of iTunes I couldn't tell you.
    As far as worring about quality or reliability when performing this... If a player (in this case iTunes) can't even write some tags you probably need to be worrying about using it full stop. Damage could also happen if the storage device itself is dying but again you don't want to be using it full stop.

  • Aperture keeps multiple duplicate images in the library file which do not show up in the app

    So, I recently had to merge two libraries which have some common images.  Although upon import Aperture asked me if I wanted to "Add or Merge" the libraries (I selected "merge", which wouldn't import duplicates), I wanted to confirm there were no duplicates in fact brought in.  I ran Duplicate Annihilator, which made a strange claim (about most photos, in fact): it showed a file as a duplicate which had no copies that I could find - searching for it by name revealed exactly one image.
    Curious, I searched inside the actual photo library.  Imagine my surprise when I found the following files
    ...Library/Masters/2007/Aug 10, 2007/IMG_0002/IMG_0002.JPG
    ...Library/Masters/2007/Aug 10, 2007/IMG_0002 (1)/IMG_0002.JPG
    ...Library/Masters/2007/Aug 10, 2007/IMG_0002/IMG_0002.JPG
    which are in fact *exactly* the same image.  Meanwhile, to reiterate, Aperture shows only ONE photo:
    IMG_0002.JPG
    Shocked, I investigated further.  In fact almost every single file which was in common between both libraries was "imported but not displayed", which explains why my two libraries of sizes 50GB + 50GB after merger = 100GB when, the two libraries in terms of images had 10k + 12k after merger = 14k images.
    Aperture imported all the photos into the new library.  But it just opted not to use half of them.
    So, now I have a bloated-by-2x library, and of course the frustration with Aperture having made such an insane, bone-headed move.  Those files are essentially dead weight which will follow the library around for all eternity.
    1) Why?
    2) How to fix?
    thanks!

    I would take  a step back here before going further.  William's suggestion might very well clean up the library but something obviously did not go right and to start mucking about in the library might make things worst.
    For starters I'm surprised to see the folder structure you showed in your first post. Aperture stores managed masters (originals) by import date and time. The structure (in all libraries I've ever seen) looks like:
    So something seems wrong with your master folder.
    Also the three folders you showed the first and third are identical ( the middle one has the (1) added to which is how the OS handles duplicates in a folder) so this shouldn't even be possible, those folders should not be there.
    I'm wondering if this is something left over from your using Duplicate Annihlator. Do you have a copy of the library before you ran the merge and used DA on it? Would be interested to see what the master folder looks like.
    Finally when you ran the merge which library did you tell Aperture to use as the master, the one that was used to resolve conflicts?
    Again William's suggestion might be all you need to do but it would be good to figure out want went wrong before proceeding.
    regards
    Message was edited by: Frank Caggiano - A better first step might be to run the Aperture first aid tools, repairing and possibly rebuilding the library.

    Thank you so much Paul. I have been trying all day to locate the method by which I could create a spreadsheet using the pdf submit route. I suppose the tutorial in CS4 should have been changed to reflect the changed explanations, but I guess that would be difficult to do. Anyway it worked and I can now do the analysis I need from my customers (lots of pupils!).

  • Lost id3 tags moving files from mac to external drive

    No matter what audio file I move from my desktop to any of my 20 external hhds in finder not itunes the meta data gets lost in the transfer.
    My music hard drive died and I'm having to copy all my CDs to a new drive, I like to have all my tags set and ready for when I import songs into iTunes
    Can anybody help??????

    Drag and drop should work with the movie files.  Use these instructions for iPhoto library:

    Consider making a new library with the events you want or move the library and then edit it leaving the events you want to remain.

  • ITunes 6.0 messing up ID3 tags and file names

    Hey guys, i have just upgraded to iTunes 6.0. I have noticed that this new version is messing up my mp3 file names. When i start up iTunes, there would be files that have their Title, artist and other info either missing, reverted to the original mp3 file name or changed to something else. This is incredibly annoying and troublesome as i have a lot of mp3 files. Does anyone else have this problem?

    Welcome to the world of Gracenotes. This is the database that Itunes reads to name your files. Apple pays a royalty to these clowns and this is what you get; misspellings and just plain wrong info.
    I constantly sort and edit my 1300 CD collection so I would suggest you learn to do the same within iTunes. If the author names are reversed, fix one then copy. Itunes will let you select and change multiple fields once you learn to do multiple selection..not hard but tedious at times.
    Apple needs to threaten to let us use the free CDDB for an alternate look up and a swap button on authors names, and so forth..

  • How Do I View iTunes Library File's Data Intelligibly?

    Hello Everyone,
    I am trying to set up a library on a new PC, I have most of my audio files in itunes now and I have several old itunes metadata folders containing itl and xml files. What I want to do is import the playlists and data into my new itunes. When I do this I get a message telling me some songs are missing. I want to work out WHICH songs itunes thinks are missing so I can correct these playlists.
    It occurred to me that I could do this by manually reviewing the data in either of the old libarary's itl or xml files. I can't work out how to do this! I know nothing about xml and it just looks like code to me when opened in a web browser. I want to open them up and clearly view what they say are in the playlists.
    Can anybody help me with this?
    Thanks.

    Examining the XML file will not tell you what is missing. All that files will show is what tracks iTunes has in the playlist, and you can get that same listing in a format that's easier to read by using the Export Playlist command under the File -> Library menu.
    If you really want to work with the XML file, it's just a text file with special formatting. Any text editor capable of reading XML will display the file in a format that's somewhat more readable. But I know of nothing that would read the Track ID in the playlist section and automatically relate and fill in the track information. You'll have to do that yourself; the track ID and the applicable data (track name, artist, etc.) will be "higher" in the document and should be locatable with a normal search function.
    Regards.

  • ITunes sometimes changes ID3 Tags/Deletes Art

    Hi
    I currently keep all my MP3's ID3 tags as 2.2, as that version is what seems to allow the artist/album information to show up in the actual file info in my My Music folder.
    Sometimes, when scrolling through on iTunes, an album's art will suddenly turn blank, and all of the songs in that album have turned to 2.3, and occasionally added things like composer and album artist, which I prefer to keep blank. I have to then select them all, change the ID3 tags back to 2.2, then paste the album back.
    Why is iTunes doing this? Is 2.2 not the ideal ID3 tag for files?
    Oh, and extra details if it helps. I'm running the most current version of iTunes, and all of my music is from CD's (so nothing from the iTunes store)
    Message was edited by: Book1245

    I agree with polydorus. It's WMP making hte changes. Esp since itunes by default uses ID3 v2.2, not v2.3 tags.
    Also, it doesn't matter if you never use WMP - its default settings allow webpages to open WMP in the background without you even knowing.
    You need to turn this auto-update "feature" off in WMP in 4 places.
    Player tab: everything unchecked so WMP won't touch your files
    Library tab: everything unchecked, esp the box to retrieve info from the internet
    Privacy tab: everything unchecked, esp the box to update files
    Security tab: everything unchecked so web pages can't launch WMP in the background
    You also need to check these 4 settings after every windows update that includes a WMP update, because it has reset them back to some of the defaults, I have noticed.

  • Rhythmbox 0.13.1 not handling ID3 tags properly from mt-daapd server

    I have an mt-daapd server (Firefly) serving a music library to various clients on my home network. My wife's Ubuntu desktop with Rhythmbox 0.13.1 reads the ID3 tags of files served with no problems (screenshot below):
    My Roku SoundBridge device can also access the files and read the ID3 tags without issue, as can iTunes on a Windows XP machine.
    However, since the the 2010-10-04 update of Rhythmbox on Arch x86_64, ID3 tags on files served by the mt-daapd server appear to be only partially readable (just the title and the genre), which results in all tracks being categorized as "Unknown" artist, album, etc. in Rhythmbox (screenshot below):
    Until the Oct 4 update, things worked well. Any ideas as to what may have changed? It does NOT appear to be an ID3 support issue on the host computer running mt-daapd, as other client devices on my network can read the tags just fine, and things only went awry after the latest update.
    Any help is much appreciated. Cheers.

    Hmmm ... PKGBUILD listed the dependency as musicbrainz-2.1.5 without any editing needed:
    pkgname=rhythmbox
    pkgver=0.13.1
    pkgrel=1
    pkgdesc="An iTunes-like music player/libary"
    arch=('i686' 'x86_64')
    license=('GPL')
    url="http://www.rhythmbox.org"
    depends=('libgpod>=0.7.93' 'libsoup-gnome>=2.31.92' 'gnome-media>=2.31.6' 'totem-plparser>=2.31.92' 'musicbrainz>=2.1.5' 'libmtp>=1.0.2' 'libnotify>=0.4.5' 'lirc-util$ ...
    I removed libmusicbrainz3 (and sound-juicer, as it depends on it) anyway. Then I rebuilt Rhythmbox with abs and reinstalled (largely because I hadn't done this sort of thing in a while), but no change.
    Thanks in advance for any other suggestions.

  • How to delete multiple old ITUNES LIBRARY files safely ?

    I'd like to clean up my Itunes LIBRARY files, but don't know what's safe to do and not to do. (I have Itunes 8.1 / OSX10.4.11)
    MY QUESTION IS TWOFOLD :
    (1) how do I create a new Itunes library file now with today's date; and
    (2) how do I delete multiple (old) Itunes library files, without risking the loss of what I've got ?
    This all stems from exploring Itunes as a result of a problem I had today... when trying to import mp3's from my terrabyte drive, after about 150 successful mp3 track imports, Itunes froze and everything else on my MAC froze as well (constant spinning colored wheel). After many failed attempts to force quit Itunes, I turned off my MBPro. On restarting, Itunes tooks ages to "import" files. Eventually Itunes opened but with only half of my original tunes (1500+ songs 8.11GB) and had nothing from today's import.
    I found a post suggesting to hold down OPTION while starting Itunes. Then I selected a file from my hard drive > me > music > Itunes > "Itune library" with the most recent date and shezam, Itunes once again has all my songs, as before. Nothing I imported from the terrabyte drive today appears however, but no matter.
    In my "Itunes" file there appear MULTIPLE Itunes libraries ! such as Itunes library, Itunes Library (damaged), and as well a folder called "Previous Itunes Libraries" which itself contains multiple Itunes Library files and multiple "previous Itunes Library files" with dates back to 2007. These I want to clean up and delete .... should I ? ... Can I ?
    I really could use some words of wisdom from the wise ! Thanks in advance

    Whenever you install a new version of iTunes and run it teh first time, iTunes will create a backup of the current iTunes library file and copy it into \Music\iTunes\Previous iTunes libraries, then update the iTunes library file in \Music\iTunes\ for the current version of iTunes.

  • ID3 Tags and multiple Libraries

    I think I really have 2 separate questions here.
    1) I have an external hard drive at work with all my music files on it. I use iTunes to listen to these songs at work. I have spent a lot of time adding song ratings, and album art, and cleaning up some of the album titles, song names, etc. on these songs. I copied all of these music files to my hard drive on my home computer. I don't listen to music on my home computer very often. Is there a way to copy over all of the updated song information to the library on my home computer?
    2) I assume that much of the information about a song (artist, album, etc.) is stored in the ID3 tags. Is there any way to write ID3 information to a file from iTunes?

    Some, but not all of the information is stored in the ID3 tag. Examples of information not stored included (but are not limited to): ratings, play counts, date added, and last played.
    If you want to transfer information about some songs, you can put those songs into a playlist, then export it as a text file (select the playlist, then File..Export). On the other computer, you can then import it. NOTE: if the path (folder) of the song is different on the two computers, you will need to edit the text file before importing it on the second computer.
    Also note that the exported playlist still does not contain all of the iTunes information. But it does have the rating, play count, and some other stuff not stored in the ID3 tag.

  • How to include javascript resources in  Facelet tag library

    I've been trying out Duncans watermark behavior tag (https://blogs.oracle.com/groundside/entry/placeholder_watermarks_with_adf_11). Indeed a great article and the example work perfectly when the tag library is included within the project and when the javascript resource (common.js) file is added to the document using af:resource tag.
    I would like to create a deployable tag library, including a setWatermarkBehavior tag, for reuse in various apps. I'm able to create and deploy the tag library as a ADF library and include it for use in an application. But on runtime, the pages are not able to find the "addWatermarkBehavior" method, which I hoped automatically got loaded from the javascript file defined in the tag library jar. In the tag library file, I've added a "adf-js-features.xml" in META-INF. This file and the .js file is included in the ADF library jar. "adf-js-features.xml" looks like this:
    <adf-js-features xmlns="http://xmlns.oracle.com/adf/faces/feature">
    <features xmlns="http://xmlns.oracle.com/adf/faces/feature">
    <feature>
    <feature-name>adfExtTaglib</feature-name>
    <feature-class>com/cgi/adf/ext/taglib/js/adfExtTaglib.js</feature-class>
    </feature>
    </features>
    </adf-js-features>
    I'm not sure, what value should be used for "feature-name" - I've tried many different "meaningful" names. I presume, that the ADF framework, should automatically discover all "adf-js-features" files and automatically load js-file on pages, which are using tags from the particular tag library. But apparently I'm missing something. In the facelets page used for testing, I have these few components.
    <f:view xmlns:f="http://java.sun.com/jsf/core" xmlns:af="http://xmlns.oracle.com/adf/faces/rich"
    xmlns:adfext="http://xmlns.cgi.com/adf/ext">
    <af:document title="testAdfExtTaglib" id="d1">
    <!-- af:resource type="javascript" source="/resources/js/common.js" / -->
    <af:form id="f1">
    <af:inputText label="Label 1" id="it1">
    <adfext:setWatermarkBehavior value="CHR-Nr"/>
    </af:inputText>
    </af:form>
    </af:document>
    </f:view>
    Doing some debugging, I can confirm that the "getScript" method of the setWatermarkBehavior class is called. I can also find the javascript produced by the "getScript" method in the DOM. But I cannot find anywhere in the DOM, where the javascript file from the tag library is loaded.
    Please, help me out?

    The Javascript source URI has the value "RES_NOT_FOUND".
    If I try to access it using ".../faces/javax.faces.resource/javascript.js?ln=js" I get a blank page (contains a Html and Body only).
    If I try to access it using ".../faces/resources/js/javascript.js" I can download the javascript file from the taglib.
    If I manually copy the javascript.js file from the taglib into the enclosing project and save it in "resource/js", then the javascript source URI is resolved correctly to ".../faces/javax.faces.resource/javascript.js?ln=js" and I can downloaded it, but then it is the local copy and not the one from the taglib jar.
    Do I need some specific configuration in web.xml or other deployment descriptors, to be able to use "javax.faces.resource"?
    The only configurations whoch smells like "javax.faces.resource" is this context param: javax.faces.FACELETS_RESOURCE_RESOLVER=oracle.adfinternal.view.faces.facelets.rich.AdfFaceletsResourceResolver
    In web.xml various "resource" servlets is defined (I'm not sure whether I need them, JDeveloper has created them automatically):
    a) resources = org.apache.myfaces.trinidad.webapp.ResourceServlet, maps to: /adf/*, /afr/*, /bi/*
    b) adflibResources = oracle.adf.library.webapp.ResourceServlet, maps to: /adflib/*
    I appreciate your help.
