  • Seagate Free Agent Pro 750/Leopard Incompatible?

I have been trying to use a Seagate Free Agent Pro 750 (purchased off the shelf at Costco) as a Time Machine backup drive. Leopard is unable to format this disk as anything other than FAT32 (which cannot be used for Time Machine). I spent about 2 hours on the phone with Seagate tech support, and finally returned the drive. I got another, duplicate unit, and repeated the experience (except this time I used Seagate's online chat tech support instead of the phone). I tried this with 4 different machines (2 G4 12"s, a Macbook and a Macbook Pro), and with both the firewire 400 and USB 2.0 interfaces (the Free Agent has a replaceable interface module that I switched out to try both ways).
Is this a known incompatibility? Anyone else have this problem? Is there a fix?
    Thanks!

    Hi there,
I have the exact same hard drive that I bought at Costco and think I experienced the same error as you did. You probably got some file formatter error using disk utility? This issue is known and there is an easy workaround. Here is the Gizmodo link to the solution:
    http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/apple/leopard-disk-utility-format-issue-screws-with-t ime-machine-but-theres-an-easy-fix-316573.php
Please let us know if this solves the problem you are experiencing. The solve involved creating 2 partitions, reformatting, then combining the partitions again.

  • Can I delete the files off of my MacAir after a Time Machine download to an External hard drive?

I need to free up space on my MacAir.  Does doing a Time Machine to an external hard drive allow me to delete the files off of my laptop without worry?  I have lots of pictures that I don't want to lose.
    Thanks!

No. It is not an archival backup. It essentially is a mirror of what is on your hard drive. However, it will not delete those backups until it needs the space.
If you wish to archive them to other storage, you need to use something else (copying in Finder to an external would suffice).

  • Maverick can't mount seagate free agent GoFlex

I have been using a 1 TB Seagate Free Agent GoFlex external drive to backup Time Machine on an Early 2009 iMac.  Since upgrading to Mavericks, the drive will not mount.  Dates for previous Time MAchine backups appear but the screens remain black when I try to open them.  How can I get Mavericks to mount the drive?

Of course. Your external drive compatibility depends on the file format it uses.
You won't have any problem reading your external drive because exFAT, FAT32 and NTFS are compatible with OS X. However, if your external drive is formatted with NTFS, you won't be able to write in it. You will notice it when you try to copy data to your external drive from the iMac. If that happens, you have two options:
    1. Use a third-party application like Parallels NTFS.
    2. Format the external drive with exFAT or FAT32. You have to do this in a PC. Copy your data to the internal disk of your computer before formatting the external disk.
If the external disk is formatted in FAT32 or exFAT, your external disk will work correctly

I tried your suggestion, and it's been giving me the message "Preparing for Backup" for the past 8 hours.  Does this mean TM is backing up my hard drive?  I'll give it a few more hours, but if nothing else happens, I'm not sure what else to do.  I'm not sure if there are any new external hard drives that are compatible with ML yet.

This article has a link for more information on finding your profile directory: [[Fix the "Could not initialize the application's security component" error message]]. On Windows 7, you can try this (either in a Windows Explorer window address bar or from the start menu search box):
    %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
You may see one folder in there and that's the one you want. If you see more than one, look for the one with the most recently modified files.

  • Is Seagate Free agent Go Flex 1TB fit in MacBook Pro 2010 13?

Is that Seagate Free agent Go Flex 1TB fit in MBP 2010 13.
I want to take out hdd from Seagate free agent go flex from it's casing and put in MBP.
Its that possible? what height of actual size Seagate Free agent Go Flex 1TB HDD?

You would be a whole lot smarter just to buy a 1TB bare drive with a height of 12.5mm or less, install it in your MBP, and keep the external GoFlex drive intact to use for backup.

  • Photo Smart 8250 Conflicts With Seagate Free Agent External Hard Drive

I recently installed a Seagate Free Agent External hard drive.  The hard drive will not work when my printer is connected.   I checked Device Manager and found that both the printer and the hard drive load a USB Mass Storage device driver that is the same version number. If I unplug the printer the driver is removed from Device manager and the hard drive works fine.  Should the printer load a USB Mass Storage device driver when it is connected?

I have an iMac purchased in May 2011.  OSX Lion 10.7.3.  I deleted backup file from the external hard drive which operates from Time Machine.
Now, the trash can will not empty some of the files deleted from the backup harddrive.
The trash contains-- File folder: "Core Services" which contains a locked file: "boot.efi".
    It will not delete.
How do I get the trash can empty of these files?

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

  • Very slow performance with Seagate Free Agent 320GB

I'm trying to use a Seagate Free Agent 320GB drive with my MacBook Intel 10.4.11). It's extremely slow. When I check information about the machine, it does not show up on the high speed bus (but instead an another USB bus, which I assume is not high speed.
Any idea what's happening? I found another thread related to this issue, but no resolution to the problem.

Could you describe the cabling which connects the drive to your Mini, how the drive is powered, and what else is connected via usb to your Mini? Thanks!

  • I went to back up my Mac on the same Seagate Free Agent I've been using for a year, but I got a message "the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer."  I'm still using Snow Leopard like I've always been.  What is going on, and how do I fix it?

I went to back up on the Seagate Free Agent I've been using for almost a year.  I got the message, "the disk you inserted is not readable by this computer."  What do I do now?  How can I fix it?

10.7.4 is not Snow Leopard.    10.7.4 is Lion.
Also, is the drive connected via USB or Firewire?
If USB are there other devices on the USB bus?
Are you using Time Machine, Superduper, Carbon Copy Cloner, or another software?.

  • TS2942 I want to delete a file off a thumb drive but get error 1407 which won't let me delete or trash the file.  What do I do?

I want to delete a file off a thumb drive but get error 1407 which won't let me delete or trash the file.  What do I do?

Hmmm, what Format is the Thumb drive?
    In the Mac/AFP world...
      errFSNotAFolder               = -1407, /* Expected a folder, got a file */
Is there perhaps a colon or Backslash, or slash in the filename?

  • 1TB seagate free agent turned into a brick

After a year or so my free agent 1TB external seagate drive turned into a brick. Luckily I have friends in Seagate who told me this was a known issue, they resurrected my drive for me but told me that I needed to update the drive firmware to prevent this issue reoccurring. I plugged the drive SN into the Seagate web site but it tells me that there are no firmware updates needed. Has anyone had this issue or updated firmware on their external drive. I know that if you do this you can avoid the drive failure. I also know that if the drive is internal to some systems, such as an HP, that you can get a firmware upgrade.

    Hi,
i have an 1,5TB Seagate Free Agent connected via Firewire 400 (with a conversion cable to my old MacMini) ther i had always problems that the Free Agent just stopped working (without any error) and Superduper just stopped the copy job.
Now i have the new MacMini and the same problem happens when connected to 800 Firewire with proper cablin ONLY when i let the harddisk go to sleep (System Preferences / Powersaving / let Disk Drives go to sleepp or something like this in english, i have a german installation)
So i try now to set without letting disk go into sleep because it sometimes does not wake up (you see the logo ligt softly flashing) hope anyone has a solution.

  • Rescue and Recovery Crashes While Deleting Backup Files

I've seen many threads in regards to Rescue and Recovery crashing while deleting backup files, but no solutions were ever mentioned!  I have a T400 (Vista SP2, Intel T9400, 4GB RAM, 300 GB HD) and was quickly running out of disk space.  After finding mention of Rescue and Recovery I was able to delete some of the backups but not all.  For example I have one from 2008 (18GB) but it won't seem to delete.  I let it sit for quite a while (over night) but it still didn't delete.  Does anybody have a solution for how to get R&R to delete this files?  Or how to delete these files manually?  Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
in this situation I assume, you are using the GUI for the deletiong of the RnR Backups.
What I always prefer is the rrcmd.exe which you can use with the "delete" whicht so that the backups that you want to will be deleted.
    Cheers

  • TS3992 If I back up pictures from the camera roll on my iPad to iCloud and then delete the pictures off my iPad will the next back up to iCloud erase those picutres from iCloud?

If I back up pictures from the camera roll on my iPad to iCloud and then delete the pictures off my iPad will the next back up to iCloud erase those picutres from iCloud? or will all pictures remain in iCloud?

They will be erased.  The backup only includes the data (and photos) on the iPad at the time of the backup.  To keep your photos permanently, import them to your computer as explained here before deleting them: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.
