Dent in Macbook Air

Hi
I have a Macbook Air 13" 2011.
It has a dent in the bottom left corner of the bottom and upper left of the screen frames. The dent is not particularly large (not even a mm) but the bottom corner has bent in slightly and it is noticeable on the upper side.
Do Apple repair cosmetic damage such as this? (there is no other damage, laptop is fully functioning)
What is the cost of repairing/replacing?
How do I go about gaining such information?
Are there any alternative methods to fix it?
Thanks for any help

Sure Apple can fix it, but they don't do "body work", if you know what I mean. They will simply replace components. The lid can get a bit pricey, since I've not seen the metal as a separate part from the display.
For some, it is more than cosmetic. My 11.6" had a slight marring of the same edge. As a result, I could not fit a hardshell case until it was "remedied". The case has to be essentially perfect dimensionally in order to snap a fitted hard case onto it.
I would first check with a Genius Bar appointment the cost to repair the unit. Then compare that to the same spare part from the likes of ifixit.com, using a Apple Service provider to do the actual install.

  • Macbook air have dented corners upon receival

    I was recently gotten a gift from a friend, a new 11" macbook air. He just ordered it from US Online store and didn't check on it content upon arrival (as it supposed to be a gift).
    And last week I received it from him (I am in Indonesia), opened the sealed package, and saw my supposed to be brand new Macbook Air is dented on its corners.
    I have tried to contact Apple Support by phone and visit retail stores here to no help.
    I do understand that I can't claim it to retail stores as it was purchased from US Online Store (I am in Indonesia).
    How should I contact Apple regarding this issue please advise.
    Thank you.

    I have called the number listed at the online store page, it's a Singapore number. And was told there is nothing they can do as it was purchased from US Online store.
    I have brought the package and the damaged macbook to physical store as well and was told the same thing...

  • Macbook Air Dent

    Hi, I dropped my macbook air and I belive it is still covered by the warrenty it came with. There is a fairly large and noticable dent in the corner of the upper casing. Everything still works fine as far as I know apple says they won't fix it but my friend has a macbook and the plastic cracked and they replaced the whole part for him. I was just wondering if anyone has done anything like this

    If Apple abides by it own terms of coverage, the dent will have no coverage. It is considered user induced damage, and is excluded.
    Certain provisos have been afforded for coverage of plastics which were deemed to have been a design defect in specific cases.
    p.s. Same thing happened to me a few years ago on an 11" MBA. I installed a hard shell to reduce the visual detraction (it was still under warranty at the time).

  • Project "Revive old Macbook Air"

    Hey guys,
    I can already see the TLDRs coming and I apologize in advance for my lengthy post, but oh well, here it goes:
     A friend of mine gave me her Macbook Air 1,1 (US - Feb 2008 - MB003LL/A) to see if I can rescue some of her files on the "dead" hard drive and I got to keep the machine itself as a reward for doing so (don't ask). The Macbook took a fall and has a few scratches and dents but apart from the light sensor and the actual faulty hard drive it works just fine (booted into a Lion partition on an external drive to test it).So yeah, I would really like to revive - not to say restore - this thing, preferably without spending too much money in the process. The main purpose of it would be emails, browsing, Skype, watching video (if disk space allows it) and maybe a little Photoshop/Illustrator. So what I'm trying to figure out right now are the following points:
    Boot disk, System:
    As I can boot from an external drive and have Lion run pretty smooth through USB 2.0 I thought I might just get a 16GB mini thumb drive and try a minimal install of Lion, I guess this would be the cheapest (and dirtiest) option. For double the price I could get a 16GB SSD and replace the faulty drive and for double that price I could get a 32GB SSD. I installed Lion on a 16GB partition of my external drive today, removed languages with  monolingual, got rid of printer drivers etc. but couldn't get the size of the system (and it's recovery partition) down to less than 10GB.
    Any idea how to reduce the size of OSX Lion or get rid of the recovery partition? I don't need a few of the system apps, which ones can I uninstall safely and will I run into any problems with Apple software updates if I do? Also I'm thinking about replacing some of the system apps like f.e. Mail for Sparrow as my main email client etc..
    As I obviously have to look at disk space in both 16 and 32GB options, I would try to outsource as much data as possible to the cloud and my home "server" that I can access via afp and dynDNS. Do you guys have any tips on how to best set this up? My Dropbox is fairly big and I also still have those 10GB of horrid iDisk space, so in theory I should be fine with file storage over the web, I guess.
    Dents and scratches:
    Like I said the Macbook is a little beat up, has a strange dent in the back of the top where the hinges are and a few dark grey stains in it's unibody. I've read I could get the stains off with Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser but am not sure if these actually are damages to the aluminum and rubbing them will only make them worse? The big dent is something I would really like to get rid of, but I know unibody dents are not easy if at all possible to deal with. I once had a repairs guy recommend trying to bent a dent back on my Macbook Pro by using a piece of cloth on the aluminum, a piece of soft wood and a hammer. But hammering so close to the screen sounds pretty scary. Again, any tips on how to deal with this would be highly appreciated.
    Stains:
    Dent:
    Cover:
    And lastly, to prevent new scratches etc. I'm looking for a cover/case for the 13" (I am positive the latest cases fit the new and the old Mabook Air). I like the Incipio Feather but then the dent would really have to go. What kind of covers/cases are you guys using for your Airs, any recommendations?
    So yeah, that's all for now. Thank you for reading and thank you even more in advance for any tips and ideas to my questions.
    Thanks,
    V

    "don't ask"
    I wasn't going to.
    "the actual faulty hard drive it works just fine"
    Why do you consider a working drive to be "faulty"?
    "I would really like to revive - not to say restore - this thing..."
    Yet, you ask how to restore the coverset.
    "I once had a repairs guy recommend trying to bent a dent back on my Macbook Pro by using a piece of cloth on the aluminum, a piece of soft wood and a hammer"
    You're worried about using a product to clean the coverset, yet you're considering using a hammer to remove dents.  Amazing.
    "Ah sorry, I used Apple's uploader for the images, higher res is here: stain, stain and dent."
    The links still do not work properly.
    Last thing first: leave the coverset alone.  You'll spend more money fixing the cosmetics than anything else.  In case you missed my point: do not use a hammer, do not you body filler, do not use sandpaper or steel wool. Apple's documentation spells out clearly how to clean the case.  If those ideas don't work, do not attempt anything else.  As for cheap internal storage, replace the drive with the same type.

  • What case/sleeve should I get for my macbook air 11"?

    I just got a macbook air 11" for Christmas, and don't know what kind of case to get. I carry it around in my backpack everyday for school, so I need a solid case. A lot of my friends have the hard case and a neoprene case/sleeve. I used a neoprene case/sleeve for my macbook (white) but I've noticed that this unibody design makes the computer a lot more prone to denting easily. Any ideas on what cases to get?

    Your Macbook charger will specify the number of watts it uses (very fine print somewhere on the charger brick).  Your inverter MUST be able provide at least that much power, or I'm guessing your Macbook charger would have problems.

  • Macbook Air general question

    Ok, guys i have a question which sounds really ridiculous but as a new mac user, i cant stop thinking about it.
    Recently, i just bought my macbook air 13 inch.
    Yesterday, my wife was using it and she constantly used her fingers to drum around the area next to the trackpad and when she drums, she drums hard and i could hear her fingers hitting the aluminium body repeatedly.
    She also used her thumb to hit against the smooth aluminium edge on the area below the trackpad repeadtedly.
    My wife's really rough with my laptop and she did it for almost half the day. Is the Macbook Air's aluminim body able to withstand all these actions or will the trackpad and battery get damaged?
    Sorry for the stupid question and thank tou  for all your feedbacks/answers

    Unless you start denting the case, the internal components will be fine.  No hammers, please.
    Ciao.
    The only time I dented a MBP is when I dropped a three foot 2" x 4" piece of wood on it.  (very stupid of me).

  • Late 2008 Macbook Air Hinge Problem

    Hi guys, I bought a used Macbook Air a few months ago, I absolutely love it. However the hinge has been getting kinda loose, to the point where the screen will start to fall backwards if the laptop is moved at all. I am told Apple replaces the hinges for out of warranty Macbook Airs, but this one has dents in the corners from previous owners, although it is in good condition overall. The Apple store is very far from me, is it still worth my time to bring it in or is that automatically considered user damage?
    Thanks!
    RIP STEVE!

    Maybe, but not conclusively. Try it again, but for security I would make a backup if you don't already have one.
    If the drive cannot be repaired this way, then you should erase the drive and reinstall OS X:
    Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
    Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
    Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on
          the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero
            Data option to one-pass. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
    Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
    If this doesn't work then the drive should be replaced.

  • Sparks when connecting MacBook Air charger to the wall

    Hi everybody. Today when I plugged in the MacBook Air power charger to the wall in my room I saw and heard sparks for the first time and the I noticed that the connecter ends of the charger have burnt a little (I see small black dents) but the charger is working normally. Shall I stop using the charger and buy a new one? I mean does this have any effect on the Macbook?

    then you indicate a grounding issue on a certain socket in your house.
    You mentioned "connecter ends of the charger"
    lets make sure, youre referring to the magsafe end that connects to the MAC, or to the 2 prong wall connector
    which is it?
    post a pic of the "small black dents"
    otherwise use a regulated power strip in the location which has the faulty wall outlet you indicate.

  • Complaint on Macbook Air Repair - To whom this may concern

    Complaint on Macbook Air Repair - To whom this may concern
    I would like to file a complaint through this community regarding my encounter with the Apple Hardware Repair Service in HongKong involving both Apple Technical Support in Hong Kong (Tel: 2112 0099) andAuthorized Service Provider - Wah Fung Computer Services Limited.
    For background information, I had purchased my Macbook Air 11" (Late2010) at the end of October 2010 in Hong Kong (with valid purchase receiptstill with me). The machine to this date is still under the standard one yearwarranty. I am one of the first to pre-order this machine when it was firstannounced back in late 2010 and waited for the pre-order to arrive for 3 weeks.So you can see how much desire and hope I had on this machine.
    Just about 1 and a half week ago, the MBA screen failed. About 50% of thescreen turned bright white, while the rest of the screen is still displaying.It just happened overnight with shutting down the MBA, closing the lid and thescreen failed the next day when being turned on. At this point, I must stress that the condition of my MBA is as follow:
    - No scratch, no cracks and no dent on the monitor lid and the rest of theMBA body;
    - No scratch, no cracks and no dent on the monitor glass;
    - No scratch, no cracks and no dent on the inner surface, i.e. keyboard;
    - No visual damage or any sort;
    - No dropping or no sign of any impact suffered; (Again no cracks ordented surface);
    - No water damage;
    Unfortunately, when I bring this failed machine to Wah Fung Computer ServicesLimited (Authorized Service Provider in Hong Kong) for carry out repair worksthat is covered by warranty, Wah Fung had informed me that they considered themachine had suffered "physical damage" and whether the machine isconsidered under warranty is out of their jurisdiction. Hence they advised meto contact "Apple Technical Support Hotline of Hong Kong - Tel: 21120099" to explain to the representative regarding my case for their followup. Despite disappointment on the Authorized Service Provider, who had notproactively follow up on my case and instead "kick" the responsibilityball to the Apple Technical Support Team, I nevertheless had gone through thetrouble to contact them to explain my case. The first time I contacted Apple Technical Support is on July 18, 2011, I explained my case and the representative informed me that she will get back to my by Wednesday (July 20).
    On July 21, the same representative called me back, again informing methat the machine had suffered “physical damage", which had not seen or comeinto contact with my MBA. I again need to explain to her that my MBA had notsuffered any scratch, cracks or dent or even any sign of physical damage. Therepresentative then transfer my line to "Customer Care and RelationsRepresentative", which basically throughout our whole conversation had continuouslyto repeat the phase " physical damage" without offering any customercare at all. This Customer Care Representative, who again had not seen or comeinto contact with my MBA, had informed me that the Technical Engineers in UShad made the "final" judgment that my MBA had suffered "physicaldamage". And so how did the US Technical Engineers came to this"final" judgment?? The Customer Care Representative told me that thisjudgment was made from by looking at "PHOTOS" given to them by thestaff in Wah Fung Computer Services Limited (Authorized Service Provider inHong Kong). So again the US Technical Engineers, who had not seen or come intocontact with my MBA, had came up to the "final" judgment that my MBAhad suffered physical damage and then telling me to pay $6300 HK dollars(approx. 808 US dollars) to repair the monitor while a new 11"inch 64GBMBA is costing $7688 HKD ($999 USD) The Customer Care Representative cannotexplain or proof to me the cause of the physical damage, according to her, thisis because all the people and engineers, who most of them had not even physicalseen, examine the MBA had said that it is cause by physical damage.
    To be honest, if I had crashed, hit, hammered, or accidental dropped orimpacted, water damaged my MBA in any sort of way or if the warranty had beenexpired, I am willing to accept it as physical damage and pay this money to getmy MBA repaired or consider other option to get a new one. However, without anyphysical or visible damage (or any damage mentioned above) of any kind, andwith the MBA still under warranty, but I am still being accused of implyingphysical damage on the machine without any evidence and need to pay huge sumsof money for its repair, then I am really disappointed with Apple's service andthe so called "warranty". Every hardware product can basically haveno warranty, because every failure as defined by Apple can be"physical damage" that may occur without any impact, scratch, dent orcracks, no matter it is hardrisk or motherboard, whatsoever; even it may havemanufacture defects or latent defects. So what’s good with the warranty andApple care plan??
    I hereby summaries my points as follow:
    1) No physical damage on the machine, no scratch, no cracks and no dentetc;
    2) The people and technicians who refuse to repair my MBA and decline itsvalid warranty for repair service, calling this as the "final judgment", had NOT physical seen orexamined my MBA and so called "final judgment" are made by photos;
    3) No proof on the machine had suffered physical damage, why it is not manufacturerdefects??;
    4) Authorized Service Provider and Apple Technical Support Hotline bothkicking the ball to each other on the repair service
    I sincerely seek the community attention on this matter as it had beenfustrating communicates with the Authorized Service Provider and AppleTechnical Support Hotline in Hong Kong. I hope Apple can look into the situation, examine the machine to realize that it had not suffered any damage and offer me the repair service which I am entitled to under warranty.

  • I am having macbook air recently my iphotos did not open and was showing report apple and reopen but i came to know that by pressing alt and iphotos i open an new photo library and stored the pics but now how can i get the pics which i had in the earlier

    i am having macbook air recently my iphotos did not open and was showing report apple and reopen but i came to know that by pressing alt and iphotos i open an new photo library and stored the pics but now how can i get the pics which i had in the earlier photo please help me to recover my photos

    Well I'll guess you're using iPhoto 11:
    Option 1
    Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
    Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
    This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
    Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Can I return my macbook air that I brought during the holidays (Thanksgiving)

    I was gifted a Macbook air during the thanksgiving season, and since I am a computer science developer ( a student to be precise), I want to return my Mac and opt in for a Windows machine ( so that I can get enough software support if needed, there are several people around me with a pc). I was wondering, how can I return my laptop ? What are the terms and conditions ?
    Thank you in advance.

    I would think you cannot return a product after the return date has passed.
    Call the Apple Store and ask them.

  • How do I use my Macbook Air with a display?

    I wish to use the display with the Macbook Air. The screen on the MBA is too small for home use so I want to use the display instead. How do I do this? It's awkward to type on the MBA keyboard and then look at the display next to the MBA.
    However I want to keep the MBA as my main computer because I like to use the MBA outside my home a lot. So that is why I do not buy an iMac.
    I also do not want to go to the trouble of syncing a Macbook Air and an iMac.
    I figured if I can use the hard drive on the MBA and then use the cinema display to show everything like my LCD screen that would be great.
    How can I get around the problem of awkward placement on my desk?
    Can I buy a keyboard and will that prevent the need to type using the MBA's keyboard?
    I plan on replacing my old MBA with the new MBA that has two USB ports.
    Will the separate keyboard and display fit into a USB hub? I need to keep one hub free on the MBAir for the USB ethernet.
    Is it just a matter of plugging the cinema display and keyboard into the MBA and then just typing away, using the MBA's hard drive?
    I do not know how this will work.
    Thanks for any explanation.

    There are two USB ports on the display. Use one for ethernet and one for the keyboard (a USB mouse can plug into the keyboard).
    Is it just a matter of plugging the cinema display and keyboard into the MBA and then just typing away, using the MBA's hard drive?
    Yes. Or you can use a wireless keyboard and mouse.

  • Movies from iMac 27 do not show up on macbook air

    I have 24 home-made movie that show up on my main computer, iMac 27, two iPads and and iPhone5. However, I am baffled how to get the same movies to show up on my Macbook Air. I've tried Sharing the Library, turning Sharing off and on on both compueters, and many other obvious possibilities. This is baffling me. Has anyone else had the same situation and a solution to go with it?
    Thank you,
    Steve Roesler

    Hello, Steve.
    Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
    I would need a little more information on this issue to provide a better answer.  Are these movies in your iTunes library?  If not see the steps in the first article below.  Some imported movies do show as Home Videos when imported.  If these are in your iTunes library, see the troubleshooting steps in the second article below.

  • Mid 2013 macbook air keyboard/trackpad stop responding

    I have a mid-2013 13" Macbook Air - 512GB SSD, 8GB RAM - 1.7Ghz i7
    I spend a good deal of time working at my home, where I have two external monitors (one via USB, one via the thunderbolt port) and a bluetooth wireless mouse and keyboard.  Things are great.
    I also go on the road, and when I do, I simply unplug my monitors, close the lid, and go.
    Lately, I've had some very odd behavior happen which acts a lot like what is described in the latest 13" Macbook Pro Retina EFI fix:  http://www.macrumors.com/2013/11/07/apple-releases-fix-for-13-inch-retina-macboo k-pro-keyboardtrackpad-issues/
    Here's what happens....when I'm traveling and away from my bluetooth keyboard/mouse, I will open up my MBA and the trackpad and internal keyboard are unresponsive.  I can press the power button and get it to turn off...power it back on and am able to use the keyboard to control various boot options (diagnostics, single-user, safe-mode, recovery model, etc).  Booting up full, however, the issue will still exist.  Looking at the console log, when this is happening, there are a ton (about 4000 every minute) of the following :
    11/1/13 7:45:26.000 PM kernel[0]: Error: AppleHSSPIController::doSPITransfer CRC from device was invalid
    11/1/13 7:45:26.000 PM kernel[0]: Error: AppleHSSPIController::InterruptOccurred Failed to transfer interrupt data with Err (0xe00002eb)
    Eventually, something happens and things start to work -- I will generally see the following in the console log when it starts working:
    11/1/13 7:45:27.000 PM kernel[0]: Apple Internal Keyboard / Trackpad::start Start Succeeded
    If I let the machine sit at the unlock screen, eventually a dialog comes up and says "unable to find external bluetooth keyboard/mouse..."  It says it will continue to search and will pair with one eventually....it's the same message I would get from my mac mini if it couldn't find the bluetooth keyboard (and has no internal/hardwired keyboard).
    When it is happening, I can use "cmd-r" to boot into recovery mode and recovery mode will complain about not having a mouse/trackpad - yet the keyboard seems to work to control what happens at boot time.
    I called Apple and got sent to the apple store with a "it sounds like a faulty logic board or a connection that needs soldering".  The Apple Store "genius" didn't quite think that was the case and has instead suggested I re-install the operating system.  I'm non-plussed by both suggestions. This has happened both before and after Mavericks...
    On one of my latest trips, I had a case where I took my laptop out on the plane to try to use it...only to have this issue occur.  I landed, got to the hotel, tried again and everything worked fine.  Went to dinner - leaving my laptop on the desk plugged in - only to come back to have the keyboard unresponsive....  I've now resorted to traveling with my bluetooth keyboard and mouse "just in case".
    Any ideas/thoughts?

    I will open up my MBA and the trackpad and internal keyboard are unresponsive.
    Do four things to test for fault on this,
    reset SMC ,
    reset NVRAM,
    uncheck "put hard disks to sleep"
    and UNPAIR both your bluetooth mouse and keyboard from this Mac that you are using with it currently.
    yes, the notion that your logic board is at fault is extremely unlikely, additionally (though far more likely) that your Mavericks OS is corrupt.
    RESET SMC
    Shut down the computer.
    Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
    On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
    Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
    Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
    RESET NVRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
    Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
    Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
    Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
