Dependecy conflict freetype2 vs freetype2-ubuntu

Hi there,
my system update just failed due to a dependency conflict. This is the output:
schorsch@archie:~$ sudo pacman -Syu
:: Synchronizing package databases...

community is up to date
:: Starting full system upgrade...
warning: nvidia: ignoring package upgrade (180.22-1 => 180.29-3)

:: freetype2 conflicts with freetype2-ubuntu. Remove freetype2-ubuntu? [Y/n] n
error: unresolvable package conflicts detected
error: failed to prepare transaction (conflicting dependencies)
:: freetype2: conflicts with freetype2-ubuntu
schorsch@archie:~$
Why is pacman canceling the whole system update just because of freetype? Why can't I keep freetype2-ubuntu if pacman gives me the choice of saying "no"? How do I find out which package is requesting freetype2?
How should I proceed? Just add freetype2 to my IgnorePkg list?
TIA,
Blackhole

The freetype2-ubuntu package should have a "provides=('freetype2')" line in it.   So, its not pacman's fault, but the PKGBUILDs fault...

  • How to switch between conflict packages?

    Hi,
    Recently, I want to switch to freetype2-ubuntu from freetype2-cleartype. They are conflicting each other. However, a lot of other packages depends on freetype2-cleartype, so I can not remove it now. I guess such dependence can be moved to freetype2-ubuntu. But the problem is how to install freetype2-ubuntu without removing the other freetype2-cleartype dependent packages? Can anybody help me?

    Use the pacman -d switch:
    pacman -Rd freetype2-cleartype

    I tried updating freetype2-ubuntu first (using yaourt) but am encountering a strange error:

    It appears the freetype2-ubuntu package does not exist any longer?  Originally I installed these to fix issues I was having with Firefox rendering fonts - following the guidelines here:

  • Having Trouble Installing Ubuntu Fonts

    Here's my console output: http://pastebin.com/MbeHpdES
    Yes, I did remove libxft cairo fontconfig freetype2 before attempting to install.  I just did a fresh install so maybe I forgot something because yesterday installing this worked fine
    Any suggestions?

    enable-valid.patch is already applied by the Ubuntu patches.
    I suggest you contact the maintainer of freetype2-ubuntu (see inside of PKGBUILD for email). And give him a smack for not even bothering to compile it before submitting it
    Has it really been broken for 2 months, and no-one else has noticed??

  • Fonts again - not as good as in ubuntu

    Hi,
    I came back to arch after some time. I was using Ubuntu 10.10 before. I have installed all fonts related packages from aur - freetype2-ubuntu, libxft-ubuntu, fontconfig-ubuntu and still didn't managed to get fonts rendering as good as in ubuntu. It's not bad at all, but some sets of colors (background, font) are still hurting my eyes.
    Can you, more experienced arch users share your experiences? Which packages (including fontconfig) are most used?
    Thank you in advance for help.

    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Font_Configuration
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fo … g_Examples
    Most people use Ubuntu or Infinality from aur. I use Infinality with the "sharp" example in the second link and everything looks great. You'll have to find what works best for you.

  • Getting Consolas font to look like Windows

    Hey all,
    I just got Arch installed with KDE, and I must say I'm liking it a lot because Arch seems like the only distro with up to date versions of chrome and gcc. But I digress.
    I'm having problems getting fonts to look good. I've tried following the directions on the Fonts page on the wiki with regards to subpixel rendering (which might end up not being the problem, I don't know), but it hasn't helped. In particular, my favourite font, Consolas, looks pretty bad on Arch.
    Here's Windows 7, which is how I would like it to look:
    And here's Arch:
    The Arch version isn't nearly as smooth, and it looks especially bad in the console (Konsole) and in my web browser (Chrome). Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Thanks.

    Hi brebs, thanks for the reply. I had tried installing infinality, but I can't because pacman says this:
    $ sudo pacman -U freetype2-infinality-2.4.7-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
    resolving dependencies...
    looking for inter-conflicts...
    :: freetype2-infinality and freetype2-ubuntu are in conflict (freetype2). Remove freetype2-ubuntu? [y/N] y
    error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
    :: fontconfig-ubuntu: requires freetype2-ubuntu>=2.3.11
    :: libxft-ubuntu: requires freetype2-ubuntu
    I'm sorry if this is a stupid mistake, I'm pretty new to Arch and linux in general. What should I do?

  • X font problem - libfreetype removed

    Whenever I try to start X or use "X -configure /etc/X11/xorg.conf" I receive an error message
    stating - "X: error while loading shared libraries: libfreetype.so.6: cannot open shared object
    file: No such file or directory."  This most likely occurred while blindly following the wiki
    in an attempt to make fonts look crisper/cleaner on my LCD.  I commented out "load freetype"
    in my xorg.conf file which did not solve the problem.  I also performed a few pacman searches
    which returned no results, though my query skills are still being honed.  Any advice toward
    solving this problem would be greatly appreciated.  In the interest of nostalgia I registered
    on these forums and wrote this post in lynx and I'm missing my desktop environment having written
    this for the second time...

    $ pacman -Qo /usr/lib/libfreetype.so.6
    /usr/lib/libfreetype.so.6 is owned by freetype2-ubuntu 2.3.5-2
    See cairo-ubuntu, if you want the best LCD font-rendering.

  • [solved] GTK3: Fonts not rendering smoothly

    Here's GTK3 app and GTK2 app side by side:
    Fonts are not rendering correctly on any GTK3 app. I use Ubuntu's patched versions of freetype2, fontconfig and cairo from AUR:
    freetype2-ubuntu fontconfig-ubuntu cairo-ubuntu
    How can I get GTK3 apps to render fonts correctly? I don't use any DE, just dwm as window manager.

    Stupid me!
    The cairo-ubuntu from AUR had failed to build. Followed Ichigo-Roku's tip in comments and now everything works.

    In the PKGBUILD you have to replace "autoreconf" by "autoreconf -fi".
    Anyway, thanks for your help and sorry for taking your time.

  • ASUS UL30 Elantech touchpad jitter/jumping

    I've been running Arch x86_64 for over a year on this laptop, and recently had to send it back for  (dropped it).  I think they simply replaced the laptop instead of just replacing the shell, so it may actually have a different touchpad or a hardware revision.
    Anyhow, the touchpad works, even with two-fingered scrolling and three-finger right click, however I experience cursor 'jitter' and 'jumpiness', even with a single finger completely still.
    I tried enabling [testing] and updating everything....that didn't fix it.  Does anyone have suggestions for /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-synaptics.conf settings?  In the past on my other laptops I've never had to configure anything, just simply install xf86-input-synaptics.
    It looks like there was a kernel fix in the aur at one point in time, but it's quite old:
    http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=24815
    Also, it's an Elantech touchpad.  Here is the output of dmesg:
    dmesg |grep elan
    elantech: assuming hardware version 2, firmware version 4.1.1
    elantech: Synaptics capabilities query result 0x7e, 0x13, 0x0d.
    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  This has rendered my touchpad very inaccurate.

    I am running [testing], yes. It's working great when your computer is all-intel
    I have also never done any config, and I have the same file present.
    When I press a finger down it's completely still. It moves like it should, and tap-to-click, two-finger-scroll and two-finger-middle-click is enabled by default and working.
    I use gnome, and under mouse settings I have a 'touchpad' tab, but none of the settings seems to work.
    Now I may be imagining, but I think that the bug where Elantech touchpad = Logitech mouse is solved. You should try and enable testing repository. I don't know what kernel you are using, but in 2.6.37 it's all good.

  • [SOLVED] Fat fonts in KDE

    Hi everyone,
    I'm using the ubuntu patched packages from AUR and my fonts look great on GTK apps but they look fat (bold) in KDE/Qt apps. I recall this happened too with the infinality packages so I'm sure it must be some configuration option, maybe some leftover from all the font things I've tried and messed with to get the fonts how I wanted.
    I want my fonts in KDE apps to look like the GTK ones as in the screenshot attached. Any ideas what might be the problem?
    GTK
    KDE
    Here's my /etc/fonts/fonts.conf ~/.fonts.conf in case it helps.
    Thanks.

    Which ones?
    I've got installed cairo-ubuntu fontconfig-ubuntu freetype2-ubuntu libxft-ubuntu and keep installed an old version of ubuntu fonts. My configuration looks exactly the same as yours, so, according to this (read the comments), you could try changing the hinting style from slight to medium in system settings/fonts/configure anti-aliasing. It will overwrite your ~/.fonts.conf, so do a backup copy before
    Or, better, if your ttf-ubuntu-font-family version is 0.71.2-1, downgrade it to 0.70.1, the third comment from the top will instruct you on how to do that.
    If it doesn't work, could you please post the directory listing of /etc/fonts/conf.d ?

  • [Solved] Yaourt + bash problem?

    Hello.
    For couple of weeks I am occasionally seeing a strange problem.
    When I use Yaourt I get some issues that I suspect might be caused by some bash configuration problem.
    Here is the output:
    $ yaourt -Syua

    Please note the first problem:
    "You are not allowed to launch pacman with sudonPlease enter root password"
    I checked the line of code and it reads:
    "echo -e $(eval_gettext 'You are not allowed to launch $command with sudo\nPlease enter root password') 1>&2"
    So obviously, the "\n" direction is not respected here. I tried to reproduce this problem in my bash prompt, but there everything seems to work as expected.
    $ echo -e "aaaa\nbbbb"
    aaaa
    bbbb
    After upgrade to the latest Yaourt version (0.9.5.2-1) this is gone and Yaourt only promps like this:
    $ yaourt -S yaourt
    Password:
    But there is second problem:
    /usr/bin/yaourt: eval: line 24: syntax error near unexpected token `required'
    /usr/bin/yaourt: eval: line 24: `echo (required by $requiredbypkg)'
    Which is still persistent and was not solved by version upgrade. I have feeling in the gut, that it might have the same culprit.
    I also have second Archlinux box (notebook) with installation that is very similar to this one. I have cloned it, but removed some packages. Most of the system is the same. This problem is not present there and Yaourt works fine.
    I know that Yaourt is not officially supported and there are other frontends, but I prefer Yaourt.
    Does anyone have idea what might be the problem?
    Thanks.

    With regard to the sudo problem:  sudo recently underwent an upgrade that featured a rewriting of its plugins, including /etc/sudoers; I noticed the same issues for a couple days.  Add your user to the "wheel" group again, and it should clear things up.

  • [SOLVED] Incorrect / Ugly Fonts in Epiphany Web Browser

    Hello everyone. I've done a ton of a searching (here and google) on this subject to no avail. It seems fonts on Facebook / Tumblr as well as some other sites have very incorrectly rendered fonts.
    I am currently using the freetype2-ubuntu patch and I have the ttf-win8 fonts installed as well. I also have the google fonts package installed.
    Here are some screenshots of what I am seeing.

    Any input on this? Has anyone else experienced this?

    Hello everyone. I solved the issue myself.
    It turns out that installing infinality from AUR was NOT a good idea. After doing a proper install using the pacman key and adding it to pacman.conf I now have beautiful fonts. Thanks for the responses!

    What I've read, there should be /usr/share/fonts/local/* too in that list.
    I run my window manager, dwm with startx and ~/.xinitrc has these lines before dwm:
    xset +fp /usr/share/fonts/local
    xset fp rehash
    I have also tried to include those with xorg.conf:
    $ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    Section "Files"
    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/local/"
    EndSection
    I'm using Ubuntu's patched versions of freetype, fontconfig and cairo if that has anything to do with my problem:
    freetype2-ubuntu fontconfig-ubuntu cairo-ubuntu
    Xft fonts work fine with urxvt, but bitmaps don't. What am I missing?

    There isn't a "tamsynu" family in the tamsyn-font package.  You're trying to use a font that doesn't exist on your machine.
    $ xlsfonts -fn "-*-tamsynu-*"
    xlsfonts: pattern "-*-tamsynu-*" unmatched
    $ xlsfonts -fn "-*-tamsyn-*"
    -misc-tamsyn-bold-r-normal--0-0-100-100-c-0-iso8859-1
    -misc-tamsyn-bold-r-normal--12-87-100-100-c-60-iso8859-1
    << And more >>
    The syntax for the resource is fine, but it is case-sensitive.  The class is 'URxvt', an instance would be 'urxvt'.
    This should be good for a first attempt at the proper size:
    urxvt.font: -misc-tamsyn-medium-r-normal--14-101-100-100-c-70-iso8859-1
    urxvt.boldFont: -misc-tamsyn-bold-r-normal--14-101-100-100-c-70-iso8859-1
    That's about equal to DejaVu Sans Mono at 8 points.
    If you have rebuilt your font cache, either by restarting X or running 'fc-cache -f', and you want to use Xft, then this is equivalent (Tamsyn does not use anti-aliasing):
    urxvt.font: xft:Tamsyn:style=Regular:size=10.1
    urxvt.boldFont: xft:Tamsyn:style=Bold:size=10.1

    I appreciate the reply.
    My fresh install from the DVD finished and the problem was still occurring. I'm now zeroing the data (one pass), per your suggestion. I'll then do an install of Leopard via Firewire, as I'm unable to start it from the DVD.
    I'm curious how a bad install would prevent the computer from starting from a CD/DVD. I'm able to use the install CD/DVD in other computer without any problems, so I don't believe the physical disk is the issue. When I start while holding OPTION, and insert the DVD, it comes up as a boot-able option. Also, the disk image I initially used hasn't had any issues to date.
    Thanks again,
    Ben
