Deploying Firefox 7 with default user preferences?

I am having a hard time locating documentation for deploying Firefox with default user preferences (such as disabling automatic updates, setting a homepage, etc.). I located information for previous versions which mention of adding a user.js file to the defaults/pref folder. But this doesn't seem to work.
What is the proper way (if one exists) to customize Firefox for deployment in an enterprise scenario?

And people wonder why FireFox hasn't made much of a dent in the enterprise. This says it all......

I'm pretty sure higher access superceedes, so you could set up a group with no actual access, just to get the preferences working, then their individual security will dictate what they can do. I haven't tested this fully, but I beleive this is how it will work.<BR>As far as setting the preferences, go into the admin console and right click on the group, then select Preferences. To apply the group preferences to a user, add the user to the group, then right click on the user, select preferences and from the upper left corner, use the drop down to select the active preference, in this case, it will be the group you created and added them to.<BR><BR>HTH

  • Changing Default user Preferences in Workspace

I am using HFM 9.3.1. Each time I set up a new user I have to get them to log in, and go through the following routine..
Go to File>Preferences. Then Select Financial Reporting on the left side of the preferences window. Under the Preview heading on the screen are two radio buttons for On and Off. Select On and click OK.
Does anyone know how to change the default setting on this Preference to On?

From the workspace administrators manual, the directions are:
Assigning Reporting and Analysis Default Preferences
User Management Console enables users with Provisioning Manager and Explorer roles to set
the default folder, new document folder, and start page application preferences for users and
groups. Individual and group preferences have precedence over default preferences.
For default preferences to succeed, users and groups must have the roles and permissions
necessary to access specified folders and interface elements.
Provisioning Manager is a Shared Services role that enables you to provisions users and groups
to applications. It is also required for setting default user preferences for Reporting and Analysis.
For more information, see the Hyperion Security Guide.
➤ To assign default preferences for Reporting and Analysis:
1 Select Navigate > Administer > User Management.
2 Log on to User Management Console with a user name provisioned with Provisioning Manager and Explorer
    roles.
3 Expand the Projects node until a Reporting and Analysis application is displayed.
4 Right-click the application name and select Assign Preferences.A three-step wizard is displayed in the Process bar.
5 For step 1 of the Wizard, Select Users, select Available Users or Available Groups.
6 From the left panel, select user names or group names and click the right arrow.
To select consecutive names, select the first name, press and hold down Shift, and select the last
name. To select names that are not consecutive, press and hold down Ctrl, and select each item.
Use Add All to select all names.
7 Repeat steps 5 and 6 to select a combination of users and groups.
8 When all user and group names are displayed in Selected Users and Groups, click Next.
9 For step 2 of the Wizard, Manage Preferences, specify these default preferences for the selected users and
    groups:
    Managing Users 41
    ● Default Folder—Repository location of the default folder.
    ● New Document Folder—Default folder in which the new document wizard searches for
valid data sources, that is, Web Analysis database connection files and Interactive Reporting
    documents.
    ● Start Page—Reporting and Analysis interface displayed after logging on. Select None,
    Explore, Document, Favorite, or Scorecard.
If you select Explore or Document for Start Page, you must specify a repository location.
10 When all preferences are specified, click Next.
11 For step 3 of the Wizard, Finish, choose between three tasks:
    ● To configure options for another application, select one from the View pane.
    ● To change preferences for currently selected users and groups, click Back.
    ● To specify another set of users and groups and set their preferences, click Continue.

  • Deploy Firefox with prebuilt bookmarks and homepage

We're deploying Firefox during the SCCM2012 imaging process on our company's win7 and 8 64bit machines. Unfortunately, the nature of Firefox's randomized user profile names and non-use of a "Default User" makes it impossible for us to build/deploy a tailored Firefox with our desired homepage and bookmarks. I understand older versions (3.x) of Firefox could make use of a default folder in it's program directory (C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\defaults) for bookmark deployment, upon which, every new Firefox profile created would use it's bookmark.html or js file to build predetermined bookmarks for that user. But this doesn't seem to be the case with the newer version of FF. I could see us building the environment in IE perhaps, and then instructing our users to use the import IE favorites, etc upon their first launch of Firefox? Kinda lame, if even possible. And yes, we could probably deploy a post-deployment package to overwrite (or merge as i've seen an article address) a user's Firefox profile, but that's really undesirable for numerous reasons. Is there no way to do this?
    THANKS.

hello jackalfb, hopefully the following blog entry can provide some assistance: http://mike.kaply.com/2012/03/30/customizing-firefox-default-profiles/

  • Help with default user profile

I have created a default user profile using a local account. Once I have the local account I copy the home folder to /System/Library/"User Template"/English.lproj
    I do
    chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/"User Template"/English.lproj
    From the terminal as root
I log in with an Active Directory account and the profile is exactly as I created with one caveat, safari is trying to save to the dummy user accounts desktop instead of the logged in users account.

It seems to me that when ".plist" files contain references to other files or folders, most require full paths and they won't accept anything to represent a generic "home". Either that, or items are represented by "alias" data, referring to a specific file, which would be completely independent of paths. That of course means that any sort of "template" account must avoid containing references to items within the "home" folder because the template will contain references to the original items, not their counterparts in the new user's home. Note that things like the "sidebar" in a regular account or the "Dock" in a "Simple Finder" do contain shortcuts to items within the "home" folder, but these aren't generated from ".plist" files in the template but rather are generated on the fly by "Finder" during login.
In the case of the default download location for "Safari", I think it defaults to the user's "Desktop" in the absence of a ".plist" file. However, if the user changes the location, then a ".plist" file is created at that point. It would also appear that the default download location is set to the user's "Desktop" if the default Safari "home page" is changed, which also causes the same file to be created. The file appears to be: "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist"
I haven't tested this to see if it would work, but it might be possible to modify your existing template to remove the reference to the "download folder" while retaining the desired Safari "home page" using something along these lines:<pre style="overflow:auto; padding: 5px; width: 500px ; font-size: 10px; border:1">sudo defaults delete /System/Library/User\ Template/English.lproj/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetconfigpriv DownloadFolder</pre>

  • Have a Mini with "Default User" account.  Can an admin account be created instead of using that?

I purchased an Early 2009 Mini on eBay.  The seller reinstalled Leopard on it (that's what it came with) after erasing his stuff on it.  He put "Default User" as the user name, but no password.  He said for security that I should make an account with a password.
When I upgraded to Snow Leopard, I thought it would have an option to create a user name and password.  It didn't.  Can I make up another user account as the administration account; then use a third user account for documents, pics, etc. (not to disturb the admin account) and forget using the "Default User" account?
I really hate to take the time to erase and reinstall Leopard and Snow Leopard just to remove the "Default User" account.
    Thanks.
    silverado93

In order to create another account the account you are using needs to have admin privileges.  Does it?  If so you unlock the Accounts prefpane by clicking the lock in the lower left and entering the admin password (hence the reason the account you're using needs to be an administrator).  Then you can create other accounts and click the checkbox for an account that says "Allow user to administer this computer".
Not you can change the admin password for an account by using booting from your installer disk.
Now having said all that are you currently in a state where you have a single account that is not an admin account?

  • Unable to interact with Flash content when running Firefox with restricted user

When running Firefox with limited Windows user on Windows XP the Flash elements are displayed, the content that is set to auto-play does so even, but the flash area doesn't receive any mouse input: e.g. when I right click in the area instead of the flash context menu I get the browser context menu as if the flash plug-in wasn't even there. The exact same page on the exact same computer but with Administrator user works as expected: can press buttons, interact with flash controls and the context menu upon right-click is of course the flash one. This behavior occurs even if I disable all add-ons.

Try uninstalling your sound card driver in Device Manager and reboot your PC.

  • Default user preference of Planning

    Hi,
I would like to ask if I can set the default value of user preference of all users in the same time? For example, I would like to set the default value of Planning Preference of all users as "Use application default".
    Thanks very much.
    Porcia

Another option, which may be considered somewhat safer and has the advantage of not requiring a Planning service restart, is to use Lifecycle Management (LCM) to export user preferences (Configuration > User Preferences) from the application to the file system, modify the XML file as necessary, and then use LCM again to import the modified file back into the application.
I'll add a word of caution that I haven't used this approach myself for this exact scenario, but it should work in theory!

  • Sysprep problems with Default User profile

I've read the previous posts in this forum about using Sysprep with Windows XP SP3 and I have followed the instructions in MS Article 959753. I applied my customizations to the local Administrator account and included UpdateServerProfileDirectory=1 in the sysprep.inf file. The only other thing I've got in my sysprep.inf file is the parameter to preserve OEM pre-activation when re-installing Windows XP. I set it to Mini and Reseal. After imaging, I create a new user, log in and NONE of the customizations are present. Is there something that I'm missing?

I'm not sure why that is not working.
When a user logs on who does not have a profile, the first thing Windows
does is copy the Default Profile Directory over to a new profile folder
for that user. Then that becomes the user's profile.

  • Deploying Printers With Group Policy Preferences

Ok so I know this is an old topic but I need to clarify my position a bit here to best decide how to deploy printers to our organization.
We currently have about 600 printers on a Server 2012 R2 print server and we have 25 buildings. For several years we have deployed printers in GPO the old-fashioned way - user Deployed Printers. There have always been problems with this stemming
from issues with multiple print driver installs on the client computers. That aside, the philosophy works out pretty well. We have NTFS permissions on the print queues that handle who can print to what. GPOs are linked to the staff OUs for each building that
actually deploy the printers. This means that you have to have the GPO for a building and also have to have permission to the printer in order for it to actually install. When a user is removed from a particular building group then at next policy refresh the
printers granted to that group go away. This is good.
Based on the way that preferences work I think that they could solve our problems with occasional failed driver installs, but I can't find a way to reproduce the behavior I described above. If I use create, a user can be deployed a printer but if permission
to that printer is removed then the printer stays behind and they get an access denied error when they attempt to print to it. Same with Update. Replace sort of mimics the desired behavior but deletes and recreates the printer every time policy refreshes.
This wouldn't be a deal-breaker at logon, but it even happens while a user is logged in and policy updates in the background. They could potentially be attempting to print something and the printer will just disappear momentarily.
Is there something else I am missing here that I can configure in order to take advantage of GPP printer deployments in our environment? Thanks!

    Hi Matt,
As far as I know, if we choose to use GPP Printer extension to deploy printers, the printers will leave behind even if the policy is out of scope, unless we select the above mentioned option or delete the printers.
    >>There have always been problems with this stemming from issues with multiple print driver installs on the client computers.
To tackle this issue, had we disabled the following policy setting?
Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Printers : Point and Print Restrictions
If not, we can disable this setting, which will disable driver installation warning messages and elevation prompts on computers.
Regarding this policy setting, the following article can be referred to for more information.

    Frank,
Sorry for the delay, I recently had another issue take precedence over this one so didn't have much time to mull this over or test.
We currently have policy set to enable Point and Print restrictions, but allow driver installation from our print server. This should effectively be the same as what you have recommended.
I believe our driver installation issues have more to do with the large number of different printer models and sometimes the sheer number of printers that can be installed for each user. These are things that we have culturally always been there and probably
won't change. What happens is that when a printer deployment fails no other printers will be installed after that one. The reason is that starting with Windows 7 the printer deployment policy will only be re-evaluated if changes to the policy are detected.
So if a user is deployed 50 printers and one in the middle of the deployments fails, everything after that alphabetically fails and it doesn't retry until the GPO changes.
So far from my limited testing GPP printers gets around this since each printer is essentially a separate object and installation of one does not seem to affect the others. However, I don't like the idea that there is no way to replicate the behavior we
currently have which is to remove printers when the GPO is no longer applied. I may convince the powers that be that we need to change our philosophy about this and train our users to remove printers after they have changed buildings or positions, but for
now I think we will stick with traditional printer GPOs rather than using GPP.
    Thanks for your help!

  • "Bad request" errors in Firefox with second user account

Yesterday, I set up a second user account for my husband to use. Everything seems to work fine with one annoying exception. When Firefox 3 is used as the browser under the new user account, I get frequent "Bad Request" errors with various web mail programs (MobileMe, GMail, Earthlink's web mail).
This does not happen when the same Firefox 3 is used under my original user account. It also does not happen when performing the same functions with Safari under the new user account. It also doesn't seem to matter whether Fast User Switching is enabled or disabled.
I have tried clearing caches, deleting cookies, deleting preferences etc. in the second user's Firefox, all to no avail. Anyone have any other ideas?
I guess one thing I'm a little unclear about... is the second user actually using the same Firefox app as the first user? If so, would there be a way to install a 2nd Firefox app that would only be for the second user? I'm just thinking maybe there is some kind of conflict going on?
Any thoughts or help out there much appreciated!

I think I figured it out. I found an article online that said if you have Parental Controls enabled on an account (which I did on the second user account), it will not allow Firefox to write cookies, thus causing the "bad request" errors.
This is not exactly true, as Firefox under the new user DID seem to be writing cookies just fine. However, when I disabled Parental Controls on the account, suddenly the errors went away. So, it doesn't have to do with cookies, but there is something about having Parental Controls turned on that can cause these errors.

  • Why have a default user password feauture?

    Hi,
I (understood) read in the manual that there could be a default user password -
    28 BF 4E 5E 4E 75 8A 41 64 00 4E 56 FF FA 01 08
    2E 2E 00 B6 D0 68 3E 80 2F 0C A9 FE 64 53 69 7A.
If the file is encrypted based one this key, readers can open the file without having to prompt for password though the file is encrypted. I want to know whats the point of this? It provides no security. All it ensures is the reader be sophisticated enough to have a security handler. I don't see the point. Is there any advantage of having such a pdf with default user password?.What was the motivation behind this?
    Thanks

The Standard Security method of PDF supports TWO passwords - the user/open password and the owner/permissions password.  In addition, an encrypted PDF can have a set of rights (DRM) associated with it (eg. Don't print, don't copy, etc.)
If you wish to control WHO can open the PDF, then you assign a user/open password.  If you wish to allow ANYONE to open the PDF, then you leave it as the default.
Once the PDF is open (regardless of the open password), then the reader is responsible for respecting the DRM settings on the document.  However, if you are the owner of the PDF (and there is a permissions password), then you can get back FULL permissions by simply providing the owner password.
    Make sense now?
