Deployment failure in WLS 8.1 sp2
Hi,
Iam getting the following EXCEPTIONS while deploying my war file.
Iam getting this exception………………in the log file too.

I think the code that is causing the problem is due to one JSP that has the following

String rootPath = this.getServletConfig().getServletContext().getRealPath("/");
// get the config file property value
String settingsFile = this.getServletConfig().getServletContext().getRealPath("/WEB-INF/config/ApplicationSettings.properties"
// is the above code will work ?????
// i suppose this will give javax.servlet.ServletException: Unable to resolve
location....
// is the following code could create singleton problems .....
Resources.Instance().load(settingsFile); configFile = Resources.Instance().getResource(RESOURCE_KEY);
// load the properties
File fileObj = null;
fileObj = new File(rootPath + configFile);
xmlContainer = new XMLDataContainer();
xmlContainer.load(fileObj);
// get the element names and their values.
names = xmlContainer.getElementNames();

Rob,
2 questions:
1) You told me this:
"foo.xml in the same directory"
Here, what do you mean by "in the same directory" ????I meant deploy /foo/myApp/myWar.war and /foo/myApp/myConfig.xml
>
2) why do you want foo.xml to be separate from the deployment unit....what is
the reason ??I'd want to separate the configuration from the application code. If
you find a bug in your app and rebuild it, you're going to have to merge
in any changes you've made to your configuration file.

Please explain and help me learn this.

No, I'd suggest having it external to the deployment unit. ie deploy

do you suggest taking this config out from the .war file and put itinto a .jar

It is possible to write back to a zip file, but I wouldn't encourage

If you need to update the config file, I'd suggest that you either
deploy exploded, or keep the config file external to the war file.

Rob,
You told me a workaround to read the configuration file in a .war
file.
That is
done and iam experiencing no problems.
BUT i also need to write back some changes to the configuration file,how can
i do that ???
Iam getting exceptions and it looks like the weblogic container doesnot handle
this. some protocol exceptions.
please let me know.
thanks, sangita

No, neither of these would be bugs. getRealPath is supposed to

would that mean that this is a bug in WLS8.1+sp2 ???

getRealPath will return null if the war is archived rather than

war.

Upgrading WLS 8.1 SP2 to SP5: does SSL setup need to be re-done?
All,
Our production application has been built using Workshop 8.1 SP2, and is deployed on a WLS 8.1 SP2. We are now wanting to upgrade to SP5, and so I used the "Smart Update" utility to upgrade my local instance to SP5. Our application is accessed over SSL, so I was wondering if the whole SSL-setup that was done when we setup our production SP2 environment a year ago needs to be re-done? Our application has a web module, two java projects, uses SSL-based web-services and has a custom Oracle JAAS login module. I already found out that there is a particular setting on the domain that has changed between SP2 and SP5 that allows anonymous lookup of MBeans(Anonymous Admin Lookup Enabled). Are there any other such settings/considerations i need to be aware of in moving from SP2 to SP5?
All help is appreciated..it will help me decide on moving to SP5.
Thanks in advance!
Vik.Hi Vik
When you use smartupdate to upgrade from sp2 to sp5, it will upgrade only the weblogic workshop instance and not the domains.
Either you will have to upgrade the existing sp2 domain to sp5 or create a new sp5 domain and configure it just like sp2.
After the upgrade open the config.xml under the new domain and check the SSL config under the server just to make sure.As far as the SSL config is concerned it did not change from sp2 to sp5.
More information on this is available at

Standalone WLS server instance deployment failure - missing ADFLogger
I was hoping somebody could help me please with issues of installing ADF JDev 11g apps to separate WLS server instances (ie. not Admin Server) and the ADFLogger class.
I've successfully configured a separate standalone WLS, installed the ADF Runtime Libraries and deployed/run an ADF JDev 11g app to the server under the default AdminServer.
We encountered one issue with deployment regarding the ADFApplicationLifecycleListener class which is addessed in the following forum post with the documented workaround of removing ADFApplicationLifecycleListener from the weblogic-application.xml file: Standalone WLS deployment failure - incorrect weblogic-application.xml
Next we want to deploy to a separate server instance/machine on the standalone WLS (we have the eventual requirement of deploying our apps to a WLS cluster, so we're experimenting with configuring separate WLS server instances+machines).
I've created via the Admin Server a new separate server instance (say ADFServer) on a separate WLS machine (say ADFMachine) within my standalone WLS. I've configured the separate WLS server instance to run on a different port from the default Admin Server port. In addition for the 3 deployed libraries jsf, jstl and oracle.adf.domain, via selecting them in the Admin Console under Deployments, then the Target tab, I've also "targetted" (read: deployed) these 3 libraries to the new server instance so they reside both on the Admin Server and ADFServer.
However when I redeploy my original application via JDeveloper's Application Menu -> Deploy option, on deployment to the ADFServer directly I receive the exception at the bottom of this post. The relevant error message:
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: oracle/adf/share/logging/ADFLogger
This class is included in numerous ADF Runtime Libraries, and I would expect that once I targetted the oracle.adf.domain library for both Admin Server and ADFServer, the relevant ADFLogger class should be available (and given the fact I've run the application successfully on the standalone WLS under the Admin Server, it proves the library is available).
The missing ADFLogger library seems to be a reoccuring theme for application server deployments, in particular OC4J. This is the first time I've seen it broached for WLS when using the ADF Runtime Libraries and haven't found much assistance via the OTN forums, Google searches etc.
Does anybody know what I've configured incorrectly on my standalone WLS such that the ADFLogger is not configured for the separate WLS server instance? (I suspect I'll have to try the WLS forum too, but lets start here).
Any help appreciated.
Thanks & regards,
CM.

Also, after extending the domain, the oracle.adf.domain library shows up in my deployments page and is pointing to "/ u01/ app/ oracle/ product/ wls/ jdeveloper/ modules/ oracle. adf. model_11. 1. 1/ adf. oracle. domain. ear". It seems like the extending step is missing a step to give access to all the libraries?

# This script initializes the following variables before calling commEnv to set other variables:
# WL_HOME - The BEA home directory of your WebLogic installation.
# JAVA_VM - The desired Java VM to use. You can set this environment variable before calling
# this script to switch between Sun or BEA or just have the default be set.
# JAVA_HOME - Location of the version of Java used to start WebLogic
# Server. Depends directly on which JAVA_VM value is set by default or by the environment.
# USER_MEM_ARGS - The variable to override the standard memory arguments
# passed to java.
# PRODUCTION_MODE - The variable that determines whether Weblogic Server is started in production mode.
# DOMAIN_PRODUCTION_MODE
# - The variable that determines whether the workshop related settings like the debugger,
# testconsole or iterativedev should be enabled. ONLY settable using the
# command-line parameter named production
# NOTE: Specifying the production command-line param will force
# the server to start in production mode.
# Other variables used in this script include:
# SERVER_NAME - Name of the weblogic server.
# JAVA_OPTIONS - Java command-line options for running the server. (These
# will be tagged on to the end of the JAVA_VM and
# MEM_ARGS)
# For additional information, refer to the WebLogic Server Administration

Problem starting wls 6.1 sp2
Hi
I have developed an appliaction using wls 6.1 sp2 on w2k, which I want to migrate
to Solaris 8.
I have modified my windows statup scripts to Solaris, but I get a strange error
when starting weblogic. I am starting the server as root and my weblogic.policy
file is modified according to my installation.
Has anybody encountered anything similar?

Solaris Deployment Failure for cannot resolve symbol on PersistentContainer
Hello, I'm having trouble diagnosing the following deployment failure.
What are some common causes of this? My server was created using an
Express Integration domain with some custom JMS destinations added
afterwards via the console. I am deploying an application built with
Workshop (straight from workshop). I copied over an application from
Windows to Solaris, deleted the .workshop directory and .beabuild.txt
and rebuilt the application to deploy.
I get this error a few times.

This then causes other errors repeating that the deployment failed (let

It looks like this is a bug in the BEA-generated code that is then
compiled by WLS. The generated code was using the Class1$Class2 notation
to reference the class, but since $ is a valid character in the class
name, this does not behave as intended. This used to be a bug in
pre-1.4.2 but is now fixed in 1.4.2 (look at bug 4635044, and this is
also mentioned in the 1.4.2 release notes and the Java Developer forums).
The generated code should be:
com.bea.wlw.runtime.core.bean.BMPContainerBean.DuplicateKeyRemoteException
not
com.bea.wlw.runtime.core.bean.BMPContainerBean$DuplicateKeyRemoteException
Thanks again for the good response. I'll send this in to BEA support.

One other thing to add, this was fixed by changing the JAVA_HOME
variable inside of the startWeblogic.sh script. Setting it in workshop
did not change anything.

Wow, you hit it right on target! I was using 1.4.2 then tried it on
1.4.1_03 and it deployed fine.
Is this a bug in BEA or in the JDK? In either case, where should I
report this bug?
Thanks again

What version of the JDK are you using? I believe they changed the
inner class naming conventions in 1.4.2, and it's breaking lots of

Hello, I'm having trouble diagnosing the following deployment
failure. What are some common causes of this? My server was created
using an Express Integration domain with some custom JMS
destinations added afterwards via the console. I am deploying an
application built with Workshop (straight from workshop). I copied
over an application from Windows to Solaris, deleted the .workshop
directory and .beabuild.txt and rebuilt the application to deploy.
I get this error a few times.

WLS 6.1 SP2 and Apache 1.3.26 Windows NT/2000
Hi,
Is there an Apache plugin available for WLS 6.1 (SP2) and Apache 1.3.26 running
on Windows NT/2000?
thanksI've solved my own problem. I learned that there was a sp4 (let alone a
sp3) for WLS. Installed that and the problem went away. Sorry for the
noise.

WLS 6.1 SP2 and JDK 1.4.0
In configuring our WLS 6.1 SP2 to run on the released JDK 1.4 and starting the

J2EE deployment error in iPlanet 6.0 SP2
My J2EE application works fine in iPlanet 6.1, however when I try to deploy it in iPlanet 6.0 SP2, I get the following error. To me it looks like some configuration error as it deploys fine in iPlanet 6.1. Is there any setting that needs to be changed in the 6.0 webserver to run J2EE applications?

DB2 type 2 driver blocking WLS 8.1 SP2 on startup
Hi,
I use DB2 type 2 driver with WLS 8.1 SP2 and did configure a jdbc connection pool as described in edocs. But when I start the server and the server tries to deploy the jdbc connection pool, the server hangs. I took some thread dumps and the thread to load the driver seems to be stuck, as it always shows the same stack trace.
Did anybody manage to use this driver? Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Nicole

Hi,
I have a WAR file that causes WL 6.1 (refresh build) to fail when I attempt
to deploy it from the console. This WAR file deploys correctly on WL 6.0 SP2
and several other Web containers (Tomcat, Orion, JRun, Resin). The file is
large (> 5 MB) but I can send it by email if somebody wants to give it a
try.
I have noticed in the logs (see below) that the failure is caused by a
NullPointerException that is thrown in our DataSourceProxy class here:
private void setPingQuery(GenericDataSource dataSource)
dataSource.setPingQuery(PropertiesGetter.getInstance("Constants.properties")
.getProperty("persistency.pingQuery"));
here is the relevant piece of code in PropertiesGetter:
public static Properties loadProperties(String propertiesFileName)
throws IOException
Properties props = new Properties();
InputStream in =
PropertiesGetter.class.getClassLoader().getResourceAsStream(propertiesFileNa
me);
props.load(in);
return props;
so it is the loading of the Constants.properties file that fails and causes
the NullPointerException. This properties file is located under
WEB-INF\classes.
Note that with WL 6.0 SP2, although deployment goes fine, the application
fails later at runtime when Log4J tries to load its own properties file from
the same place. Other Web containers do not have this problem.
Alain.

I have figured out the problem. The file path had '\' like c:\abc.xml. The java programs which read the archives does not like backward slash. So, what I did was I replaced backward slashes with forward slashes and things worked fine.
Winzip handles the slashes and that is the reason I was able to open the war file.
Hope this will help you.

Wls 7.0 sp2 proxy plugin issue with iplanet6.x and wls 6.1 sp3 app server
Hi,
I've a setup with iplanet 6.x webserver using the wls 7.0 sp2 proxy plugin to
route requests to the clustered app server instances (2 of them) that are in wls
6.1 sp3.
The issue is, I'm noticing that the session is not sticky and is getting routed
onto the other app server instance. The error that I see in the wlproxy.log is
as follows:
*******Exception type [PROTOCOL_ERROR] raised
at line 654 of URL.cpp
Thu Nov 13 11:30:08 2003 failure on sendRequest() w/ recycled connection
to Instance1:7001, numfailures=1
Thu Nov 13 11:30:08 2003 Marking Instance1:7001 as bad
Thu Nov 13 11:30:08 2003 got exception in sendRequest phase:
PROTOCOL_ERROR [line 654 of URL.cpp]: unexpected EOF
reading HTTP status at line 1010
Thu Nov 13 11:30:08 2003 Failing over after sendRequest exception
Thu Nov 13 11:30:08 2003 attempt #1 out of a max of 5
Has anyone seen this issue? Can anyone explain why this issue is occuring.?
Thanks.Did you find a solution for this problem?
I have somthing very similar going on where I am currently working.
Thanks!
Andy.

WLS 7.0 SP2 stop response
The size of the ear is 43MB. It is deployed to WLS 70Sp2 successfully.
But after using the app for a few minutes (access the pages by IE 6.0), WLS stop
response: a white page is displayed(no text, no image, nothing displayed).
I want to see what hapened by type http://localhost:7001/console, the browser
also displayed a white page.(no login)
At the same time, I notice that the DOS console didnot display INFO log message
any more.
The app works fine on WLS 8.1.
I want to know it is caused by the bugs in my app or it is an issue of the configuration
of WLS.There could be dozens of reasons for this; impossible to diagnose with so few details.
If you want to rule out known problems in WLS 7.0 SP2, then install SP3 and try again.

Report to Show All Machines with ANY Deployment Failures
I need to generate a report, daily, that displays all machines that have
any kind of an deployment failure. This list will then be used to generate tickets for consultants in that area to check on them.
I know I can look at specific deployments and see which machines show up as failed, but I am not seeing a report that shows all machines that have
any kind of a failed deployment. Does one exist, or will I need to create it?you can try this report to list all failed deployments(only for applications but not packages).

Hi!
We need to implement authentication using our own methods, and the authentication
information is provided to the web service implementation in a basic authentication
header. The problem is, that the servlet
weblogic.webservice.server.servlet.WebServiceServlet, which handles web services
in
wls 7.0.sp2, always attempts to perform authentication, if the header is present.
Is there any way to circumvent this, because we want to implement authentication
on our own?
I already know two workarounds:
The best would of course be to implement a custom security realm for our own
authentication system. This is not an option, implementing an own security
realm is overkill for this specific web service.
The other way would be to route the requests by way of a custom servlet, which
would
remove the basic authentication header, and put the authentication info in custom
headers, such as x-auth: <user:password>, or smthng similar, and after successful
authentication, make a call to bea's servlet weblogic.webservice.server.servlet.WebServiceServlet.
But still, I'd like to know if there is any way to tell bea's servlet to ignore
the basic
authentication header?
Oh yeah, by the way, this is URGENT, as always. (really!! ;)
Toni NykanenCurrently there is no option to turn off security check.
I think you can use a servlet filter mapped to the URL
of your service, instead of a proxy servlet?

Wls 8.1 sp2: weblogic.jspc complains about struts-html tags
Hi,
I am trying to compile jsps with weblogic.jspc, which use struts' html tags. However,
the compilation fails with the following message:
[java] Translation of /views/viewPageBody.jsp failed: (line 3): Error in using
tag library uri='/tags/struts-html' prefix='html': The Tag class 'org.apache.struts.taglib.html.BaseTag'
has no setter method corresponding to TLD declared attribute 'server', (JSP 1.1
spec, 5.4.1)
I opened the BaseTag class from the struts jar and found the setter exists for
the attribute 'server' of html tld. So does the property 'server'. The property
'server' is a string and the parameter in the setter is a string. I read about
the jspc errors in wls 8.1 about the setter parameter being of different type
than the property. However, that is not the case here. I tried using both Sun's
and BEA's jdk. None of them help. Btw, there is another attribute mentioned in
the html tld, which is 'target'. The compiler doesn't complain yet about this.:(
Also, I happened to compile other apps which have struts logic tags.
My environment:
OS: Win2k sp3
WLS: 8.1 sp2
JDK: Sun's 1.4.2 sp4 / Bea's 1.4.1 sp5 (tried both)
Ant: 1.5.3 (I had an issue earlier with ant until I found that Bea officially
without any mention supports only ant 1.5.3.)
I would appreciate any help in this regard.
Thanks,
Abbas
What version of Struts are you trying to use?
Are you certain you're not encountering a different instance of that class in
an unexpected location in your classpath?
