Design Guidelines Needed

I'm currently part of project which requires the implementation of Analytical Platform for a logistics domain. We have identifed some KPIs that has to be implemented within Analytical Platform. In addition there have also been request from users to have
ability to generate daily transactional reports also which would even include things like remarks,comments etc up to lowest transaction level. Just wanted to ask approach to be followed for including these also.
Currently we've planned for SSAS Cube in MOLAP mode for the Analytical part. But we feel including things like comments/remarks etc to get up to transactional level detail inside cube wont be a good approach. Can anyone suggest whether our thoughts are correct?
Do you suggest including this also in the cube? Or do you suggest an alternate mechanism?
Also the end user wants to have the ability to select fields they want to see against each other in the transactional report platform so we cant go with static reports. They're currently planning to use Excel powerpivot to browse the cube so thoughts are
around how we can integrate the transactional reports also through the same tool itself so as to minimize the end user overhead in getting all data from a single place.
Any insights on how we can achieve the above be really appreciated.

As far as my knowledge, Writing a one time Macro in Excel to Fire a SQL Stored procedure(With Hardcoded Connection string) and connect the cube with that Excel and You can use SQL Report as an Drill Through this would be the ideal Option for your problem
in the Long Run.
Problem1: User dont need to know Macro. As part of Development you can write Macro to call the StoredProcedure and render the Result in the New Excel sheet on Double click on the Data Region of Excel Pivot. Share these Excel with Users.
You can Host the Cube in IIS with the XMLA Configuration and connect the Excel Pivot to this IIS XMLA Virtual Directory so the the Dimension Level Security can be applied and you dont need to change the Username and password to connect to the Cube for each
user. Security will be applied Based on the Windows Account. Check this URL on how to configure XMLA for Cube :http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-IN/library/gg492140.aspx.
Problem2: If the Data Level Security is applied on a Single Level Dimension or on the Highest level of Hierarchy then, we wont have any issues since the Drill through happens only on the Data Member shown on the Excel Pivot is based on the
Rights applied on Cube(Stored Procedure Input <Dimension Level>=<Member 1,2..n> will take care of Dimension security).
If the Data Level Security is applied on the least level then Data Level Security in drill through can be applied with the Help of MetaData with the Windows UserName and its corresponding Dimension member level rights.(In the Stored procedures you can implement
Data Level Security with the help of Dynamic Queries with the Stored Procedures Input: <Dimension Level>=<Member 1,2..n> and Windows UserName).we tried Implmenting an Logic to read
the Security of cube with MDX and Fill this SQL Metadata table to automate this process. But we failed. you can try to do it to make it an complete Solution.

If you look at the first one, you should be able to align quite easily as follows, View>Smart Guides being your friends:
1a) ClickDrag the top flower with the Selection Tool (black arrow) so it is clear of the pointy part;
1b) Click an empty spot on the Artboard to deselect, then ClickDrag the top flower by its bottom Anchor Point (Smart Guides say anchor when you are close enough to grab it) down to snap to the top Anchor Point on the pointy part (Smart Guides say anchor when you are close enough);
1c) Do the same for the boroom flower.
If you look at the third one, to get the triangles and the hexagon sized and aligned precisely, you may, creating them with stroke and no fill:
3a) Click with the Polygon Tool and select a suitable/chosen Radius and 6 Sides, then Object>Transform>Rotate by 30 degrees (or use the Rotate option in the Transform palette), you may Object>Transform>Reset Bounding Box to have it look nicer;
3b) Click with the Polygon Tool and select the same Radius and 3 sides, then deselect and ClickDrag the top Anchor Point to snap to the top Anchor Point of the hexagon;
3c) Object>Transform>Rotate by 180 degrees clicking Copy, deselect, and ClickDrag the bottom Anchor Point to snap to the bottomAnchor Point of the hexagon;
3d) Select all and Ctrl/Cmd+G to Group (for alignment purposes, you will know why if you try without grouping, see below).
To create full symmetry, you may use circles rather than almost circular ellipses; you may:
3d) Click with the Ellipse Tool and select a suitable/chosen Width = height;
3e) Object>Transform>Move a copy vertically by the Height (= Width) twice (or you may Ctrl/Cmd+D to repeat), to get three circles over one another with no gaps;
3f) Select the topmost and bottommost ones and Object>Transform>Rotate a copy by 120 degrees twice, to have all the seven circles precisley touching one another; you may Group them, but it is not necessary.
To have everything aligned, just:
3g) Select everything and click Vertical Align Center and Horizontal Align Center in the Align palette; you may click the pointy group or the circles ojnce more before aligning if you want to keep it in place (that will make it the key object that the other set is aligned to).
These ways may also help you further.

Case design guidelines missing corners/radius dimensions

Trying to design cases for iPhone 5 and 5c. Most dimensions are outlined clearly in Apple's case design guidelines. But the corner radiuses are conspicuously missing. Seems all the community advice I find is to measure it yourself... Being a risk averse perfectionist, I am looking for something more precise, if available. It must be out there, and think it could help quite a few with same dilemma. Anyone?

Design Help Needed Desprately

Okay... I am trying to solve this problem but no ideas are popping into my head. I will explain my current design and if anyone has any solutions please let me know. The design may need to be reworked.
Currently I have an index.html page split in 3 (A left and right, but the left frame has a top and bottom)
The left top frame has input boxes. I am sending that information to a servlet that creates a webpage to go into the bottom box.
Based on the information that the servlet recieves I also want to update the bottom left with an image dynamically.
Any ideas.... Should I use JSP in anyway ?

Use javascript to tell the bottom frame to reload,
getting the new imageOkay, someone at work told me this method... something like including the javascript inside the onload= of the HTML body tag of the right frame.. so when it loads the bottom left will reload. Can the bottom left page by a static HTML page, if so how will I change the picture. If I make it a jsp page or something I can just share a variable with the servlet ?

Generic design guidelines?

I`m currently writing an 2d/3d engine and I`m using generics in my design. But I`m getting in design problems: the design is getting to complicated because I`m using a lot of generics. I know how generics work, and I can apply them in'simple' systems. But this is the second time I`m getting in trouble with a large system using much parametric polymofism. Are there guidelines for using Generics?

By that I dont mean that you don't have to, but that it might be helpful to stand back and ask yourself that question, then answer it. p.s. I am not particulary interested in your answer.
The whole purpose of abstraction is to hide the implementation, and separate concerns, so your statement suggests to me that your architecture/design might not be ideal. If you believe your statement, (and I assume you do, since you wrote it), then there is a possibility that this belief needs to be questioned, so that you either 1. Understand it (and believe it) more confidently, or 2. Ammend or discard it.
I have done a bit of tinkering with the generics compiler which is written with generics and is quite a large application. It does not exhibit the problems you are having.
If I were having the problems you are having, I would be starting to ask myself Have I done something fundamentally wrong in this approach? Because every time I take a step forward, I get deeper and deeper into something that feels like mud.
Usually, once those doubts start to rise, they just get keep coming, and the sooner you address them, the sooner you start moving forward again. (albeit, usually, in a different direction).
On the other hand, maybe there is a real problem here. That is the exciting part about pioneering the use of new solutions, you get to find a whole new world of new problems, and contribute to their solution.

I was asked for a GUI Guideline Documentation for InDesign product (plugin), I searched the SDK and the only thing I found close to this "ww-user-interface.pdf" =, I Just wondering if you aware of any other resource that describes gui elements, usage, ... for designing User Interface in InDesign.

Nothing in descriptive prose that I know of.
There are tools - The debug build has a palette with plenty live information, including the boss class in use. If I need more details I use an own plugin to iterate through the widgets and produce a dump.
Besides there is also the Eclipse based resource editor, but I prefer copy-paste from my own sources using computed exact dimensions rather than manually approximated layouts.
Sometimes I'd wish for icon templates - use that gradient angles and start/stop colors and transparency for a palette icon on that background...

Spatial database model design guidelines?

Are there public guidelines on how to design a Spatial Database
Model?
i.e.
- is it better to have one table of geometries (elements) or is
it better to have many?
- is it better to store structured data (alphanumeric) in the
same table with spatial data or is it better to reference them
with foreign keys?
- etc
I guess all I need is some kind of methodology for building a
spatial model. Is there anything like this available?

From a database design perspective, spatial data should be
modeled in the same way other data is modeled. For instance, if
you have river data that has 1 row in a database for every river,
then you might add another column in the same table stored with
the other information about the river that includes the location
information about the river. The same would be true of other
information. For instance, if you wanted to store the location
of all of the customers in your customers table, it is simple
another column in the customers table.

So geometries are just column information like other column
information that you store in a table. There shouldn't be
separate tables that hold only geometry information.

Treat spatial data the same way from a design standpoint as other
data.

Video over ip design guideline

Hi
I want some guideline for designing video over ip setup.
We have central monitoring system and multiple sites connected to central site.
Now sites will have cameras and alrm system.
Live videos will be recorded at sites.
Now this is BOD application where we will pass video may be voice
and also data.
Central site may take archived data from sites at any time.
Now in such scenario what solution is best and cost-effective?
Whether DMVPN or MPLS/VPN or any other solution as we
require bod and not continuous dedicated bandwidth?
Pls let us know any document having such type of solutions.

What "flavor" of video over IP are you looking for?
If it's streaming video, then the Cisco IPTV would do the trick. There are four basic models: A control server, a broadcast server, an archive server, and a "starter kit" that can do all of the above, but with limited resources.
Do a site search for IPTV to get the docs & application info.
If you were looking for video conferencing, there are also several possibilities.
So, streaming video or conferencing? What's the application ?

J2EE Architectural Design Solution Needed

Hi,
I am coming up with an issue in designing the application architecture. It would be great if some one suggest solution for the problem.
The basic flow of application:
1. Client initiates a transaction from a Portlet.
2. Portlet invokes business service component (Coarse grained Stateless Session Bean) by passing XML document.
3. Corse grained SLSB process the incoming XML and invoke local session beans by passing relevant Document objects built by using service API.
4. Based on Incoming Message, message splits and placed on multiple destinations (Linked by Message Queues) hosted on Enterprise Service Bus (ESB).
5. A Message driven bean listens to the incoming request at Queue and invokes external services/Web services
6. Response xml is built and placed Response Queue in ESB by invoking business service API.
6. A MDB listening to the Response Queue will process outgoing messages which needs to be routed to original request invoker.
The Messages are linked with correlation ID and request and response are tied by some rules and business logic.
The design problem I am facing now is, how do my client waits till response comes from response queue as application need to give response to the client in synchronous manner.
The other issue is some of the incoming requests need to be executed (placing in queue) in orderly fashion and run in a transaction. (Which I am trying to process them as command Lists in prototype using Message sets and flows in MQ, but is there any implications if try to push this logic to J2EE container)

I think that you need not worry about the client waiting for the response..since this is a simple request response cycle and is synchronous...thus the invoker need to wait for the response anyway.
Secondly, I hope that you would definitely carry the points 4,5, and 6(the actual 6
) in a transaction, the option to choose the programmatic or declarative always remains on you.

Graphic Design major needs help choosing a Mac!

I'm a Graphic Design student, and I'm about to purchase my first Macbook Pro. I need to know the minimum specs my Mac needs, without sacrificing performance. I'll be running multiple Applications/Programs simultaneously without stalling or crashing. (ie: Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Internet with lots of tabs, music, and occassionally whatever program they'll use for my animation class.) I have a MyBook external terabyte, so saving large projects won't be an issue. Also, I kind of want to have an internal CD/DVD drive, but if that sacrifices performance way too much, I can get an external.
I've been offered this used MBP that is one year old, for a reduced price, http://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/specs/ (See the specs for the 13" for $1199), but will it be enough? Even if I buy more RAM and install it myself, will the processor be fast enough? Will everything else be enough?

Your link to the Best Buy MBP does not work for me but I looked on the best but website and found the only 17" MBP, model MC725LL/A, which is an early 2011 MBP. It does not say which CPU it has, a 2.2 GHz or 2.3 GHz. Either way the price is the most attractive.
If this is left over and not an open box, it probably represents the best value in that respect. I would establish if it is really new and what CPU it has before committing any funds. I note it has Snow Leopard as the OS which has been supplanted by Lion and Mt. Lion. You might think that this is a negative, but it really is not. You may always install Mt. Lion at a later date ($20) if you feel you have to. I have a late 2011 17" MBP which came with Lion and I have also installed Snow Leopard on it. Snow Leopard is the most efficient OS that Apple has offered and I do not consider obsolete by any means.
Though Apple says that 8 GB RAM is the maximum, all 2011 MBPs will accommodate 16 GB. I have that in my MBP.
There is one point that you should seriously consider. That Is the Glossy vs. the Anti-glare display. It would be best that you go to an Apple store and look at them side by side in order to make an informed decision. I have a MBP with the Glossy display, my first one, which I like but the second one I got has the Anti-glare and that in my opinion is the more practical. The newest one is also Anti-glare. I have heard it said by serious photographers that the colors are more accurate on the Ant-glare displays. It may be worth the price differential, but you have to decide. (That is another item that should be determined with the Best Buy option)

Here are the general step for designing for file to r/3 integration using IDOC,RFC
After doing this ull get good idea abt the sap xi designing
To Configure the FILE TO SAP R/3 OR SAP R/3 TO FILE, proceed as follows:
Step1:Repository
1      From the Integration Builder page, select Integration Repository. This will launch the Java Web Start Application. Log with the User id and password from the Integration Server.
2.      Choose Tools->Transfer from System Landscape Directory->Import Software Component Versions
      From the list of Software Component Versions, Choose your own software component version .Click Import.
3      On the left hand side frame ,software components will appear .Select your own software component. Open your own software component. Double click on this software component. A screen will appear .Switch to display mode. After doing this first add a namespace under Namespaces.
        The namespace should always begin with urn:
4.     Then choose the Radio Button ->Import of RFC AND IDOC interfaces from SAP systems permitted
     After this specify the connection parameters to the R/3 system:
     System : Name of sap R/3 system
     Client     : Sap R/3 client number
     These two fields are mandatory. You must Specify these fields.
     Then Save it. The new namespace will be visible under software component version node in the left frame.
     Under the namespace node, you will find the section Imported Objects. Right click on it and choose Import of sap objects. A wizard will display. In the wizard provide the following details.
Application server:IP address of sap r/3 system.
System number: Number of sap r/3.
User name: user name of sap r/3 .
Password: Password of sap r/3 system.
        Then click continue .You will find IDOC and RFC node. Click on this node and select the   Idoc or Rfc which is to be imported from R/3. Click Finish to start the Import. Close the wizard. After doing this the   Rfc and Idoc will be available into XI as Message types. So no need to create any Rfc or Idoc Structure. We need to create a structure for file only.
5.      Under your namespace in the left frame, expand the node Interface objects. You will find a node DATA TYPES
6       Create new data types.
        Right click on Data types and select New. Give a suitable name to Data Type(DT_datatype). In the data type Editor ,Create a structure having Elements of type String , integer, Boolean , Float etc as per the requirement.
        Save the object.
6.2     The Import function for XSD files enables you to upload message definitions from external sources. The object type External Definition is a container to make external definitions available in the Integration Repository.. While Importing the XSD files from External Definition
        no need to create Data types. They are imported directly as Message types.
        To do so, In the left hand frame Under Interface objects Create a new object of type External Definition and give name to it.
     Select the following.
Category: XSD.
Messages: From All Available Global Elements.
File: Here we need to specify the file name(file.xsd)
     Once the XSD is imported, click on Message tab , You should be able to see 2 messages(Request and Response)
7.      Create a new Message Type.
7.1      In the left hand frame under Interface objects, right click on the Message types and select new.
7.2      Give a suitable name to the Message type.(MT_ messagetype).
7.3      For the section Data type used you can go to input help (F4) or Search help provided and choose your data type (DT_datatype) from there.
         Save it.
8.         Create a Message interface from the left frame and name(MI_ messageinterface) it.The interface Should be Inbound or Outbound and mode should be Asynchronous .It should reference your Message type(Use F4 or Search help).
           Save it.
9.         Create a graphical mapping between the target document and the sender .
9.1        In the left hand frame ,expand Mapping objects. Right click on Message mapping and name it.You are now in a graphical editor.The Source message is on left, the Target message is on right.
9.2        As Source message select your own Idoc , Rfc or Message type.You can choose Search for Integration Object.As a reminder you can find your Idoc or Rfc under Software Component- >     Namespace->Imported Objects.
9.3      As Target Message you can choose your Message type or Idoc, Rfc .Choose Search for Integration Object.
9.4      Now that we have defined the Source and Target message, we can start defining the Mapping rules.
9.5      Map the fields of Source document to the equivalent fields in Target document .This can be achieved easily by locating the field in Target document and then Drag and Drop the   Source fields to the respective Target Fields.
     Save It.
     You can also Test your Mapping by selecting the Test Tab.
9.6     Fill in the values in the Idoc fields and click Start Transformation. On the right hand side you will see Target Document populated with the appropriate Values.
10.      Create an Interface Mapping.
     In the left hand Frame expand Mapping objects. Right Click on Interface Mapping and Name it. You are in a Interface Mapping Editor .Assign the following References.
Source interface : Your Outbound Interface (Idoc from the Software component Version).You can Choose Search for Integration Object.
Target interface:    Your Inbound Interface( The Target document interface).
     Then Select Read Interface and Assign your Mapping Program .
Mapping Program: Your Message mapping.
     Then Save it.
11.      Finally , in the left hand frame ,go to your change list and Activate it.

I am appalled by the lack of empowerment your associates are given. After an hour of being told "no" by your in-store associates about a replacement phone which was approved for junk out replacement, I now have to deal with the product being shipped to my home. The subject line order number was shipped with UPS and delivery was attempted today. I am not home during the day because I WORK FOR A LIVING. Tracking number {Edited per forum guidelines}
After contacting UPS, they state only the shipper can change the terms for package to be held at a UPS facility for pick up. I called 888-best-buy and am now told UPS will not allow them to change the terms to be held at my local UPS facility. They tell me I MUST wait another 5 days until UPS makes 3 delivery attempts and then is obligated to hold for 7 days. I do not want to and cannot wait that long.
I should have been made whole the day I went to the store to pick up a replacement phone. I begrudgingly accepted it to be shipped to me and now look at where I am. I use this phone for my job and this is unacceptable. I need someone to take action immediately and have UPS hold the package. I also suggest changing your UPS contract to give your associates the ability to make this change.
Who is going to fight for their customer's satisfaction and do everything they can to keep business profitable? Anyone care enough?
