Design thoughs CTAS vs TRUNCATE / INSERT

Would like to hear your thoughts on the speed / other pro's and con's of
Create Table As Select * from table
and
truncate table
insert into /*+ append */ select * from table;
Consider at present we have force logging on.

Create Table As Select * from table This requires that the table doesn't exist already. If it's something being done over and over, then it's generally bad practice to drop and recreate database objects in production code.
truncate table
insert into /*+ append */ select * from table; This is typically what people would do to "clear down and refresh" data in a table.
The other alternative would be to have a materialized view that you just refresh on demand.
Speed wise, there's little difference between your two methods.

When using Truncate/Insert as the Loading Type, what would be the most efficient statement: "trunc table A drop storage"or "trunc table A reuse storage"?
I'm replacing 6 milj rows by 6 milj plus 100.000.
If the table is shrunk to the initial extent by the source OWB generates, I loose a lot of time to overhead.
Am I able to configure the truncate anywhere in OWB? In what release to come will I be able to do so?

    There is no exact error
When I run the map from Deployment manager I got the message finished with errors.
If I run it in a debug session all work's perfect.
I can select the Inserted rows.
If I run it from deployment manager with Insert only it work's also perfect.
Only if I change from INSERT to TRUNCATE/INSERT I got that problem and only with deployment manager not with debug session

  • What is difference of truncate/insert and delete/insert ?

    hi all:
what is difference of truncate/insert and delete/insert ?

    Hi,
Truncate will truncate the table, which means there is a DDL operation to empty the table. DDL operations cannot be rolled back, but truncate is much faster than delete (because of that reason). If you do not require recovery of the deleted records in case of a failure, then truncate/insert is more optimal than delete/insert. Notice that for truncate to work, you cannot have enabled foreign keys pointing to the table. Truncate will never perform cascaded deletes.
    Hope this explains.

  • How to Design a Page for Both Insertion and Updation

    Hi,
I have Page where I need to populate a table from Standard PO/AP table and once the save is clicked on the table,
the data shoudl be inserted in custoim table.
Ex: Ui table wil have 3 columns and say 5 rows
    - PO#
    - Line#
    - Amount for 'X' purpose
where PO# and Invoice# is populated and Amount is empty
User will enter value in Amount column in all 5 rows and click on Save button.
Now these 5 rows with 3 columns should be inserted into the custom table (PO#, Line# and Amount)
How Can I design Model Objects for such a requirement?
    Thanks,
    Kamath

You should create an EO on your custom table and a VO on your EO. As you insert records in the VO, corresponding rows are created as EO rows and when you commit (getOADBTransaction().commit()) in the AM everything would get committed to the DB.
As far as subject goes of having a common page, everytime you can execute the VO with the bind parameters and check whether a row exists. If it does exist then update the VO Row (I expect the master record to be unique row). Otherwise create a new Row for the master and then correspondingly for the details row.
Do let me know in case you need additional information.

    To Creative Labs,

Also?in that soundcard i want flash memory chips that i can load?Soundfonts and Samples?and after PC restart or Shut Down the sounds will stay in memory of the soundcard and remembered perfectly with the effects settings after Log on back to Windows.

I have this problem only when using mic in?ventrilo. If you want to get rid of this problem you need to disable sound enchantements? in sound settings and then its fine, however you lose CMSS-3D with it. But its funny tho, if you disable CMSS-3D in Creative Control Panel you still get this issue, it only works if sound enchantements are disabled in windows sound settings.

Can you read the card in your computer?  Try removing the card, power down the phone, insert the card and then restart the phone.  If it's still not detected, try a different card.

  • Unable to insert table in design view???

Im using Dreamweaver MX 6.0, been using it for a while
trouble free. Recently installed it on my new Vista laptop, install
went fine, program opens fine. I was in design view today, tried to
insert a table and was initially getting some weird error message,
but the table WAS created. After a few minutes I went to make a
change and the program crashed. Started Dreamweaver again, tried to
insert a table and nothing happens. I can click the insert table
button, try Insert >>> Table, and nothing happens, no
    error message, nothing.
If I manually enter the code to create a table, I AM able to
do that, and I can edit it in design view, such as splitting a
cell, etc.. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

ANN: 6.1 Updater on build 1714
Macromedia has been working with our customers to track down
    the source
of problems a minority of users have been having with the ...
    Dreamweaver MX
6.1 updater. Several users reported that the updater
    incorrectly indicates
that it cannot find the Dreamweaver
application or executable file in the specified folder and
    doesn't perform
the update. While researching this, we found that there were
    several
different causes for similar issues. Those solutions are all
    detailed in the
    technote at:
    http://www.macromedia.com/support/dreamweaver/ts/documents/dmx_updater_issues.htm.
However, we also noticed that many customers were trying to
    update a build
of Dreamweaver MX, 1714, that was never legally released to
    the public or
made available for purchase. The release version of
    Dreamweaver MX 6.0 is
build 1722, and build 1714 was only released to a small group
    of beta
testers under a non-disclosure agreement. Beta testers
    received the final
build of Dreamweaver MX at the completion of the beta
    program.
Because build 1714 is not a commercial release, it cannot be

  • How to insert a widget in a editable region from a template

    Hi there,
ok so basically I am trying to create a HTML page from a template i have already designed.
when I try to insert a widget (Lightbox Gallery) in the editable region I get the following error.
"the widget requires code that must be inserted into the head of the document. insertion cannot happen because this document is read only"
I saw a previous thread (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/901299) that had the same problem with a solution but cant seem to make sense of it.
Not exactly sure where and what to paste in the header of the HTML page.
Any help will be much appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi Murray,
ha funny you would say that is the exact answer you would give me seeing you posted it
I understand the logic behind it though not sure what i need to copy and where.
Basically i craeted a "dummy page" and inserted the widget-no problem there.
next step- what code do i copy from the dummy page and where do i paste it? in the template or HTML page.

  • Why is exception not thrown in AseCommand when "Truncation error occurred"?

In the below SQL, data is written to SOURCE and from there to TARGET.
The DECIMAL columns in TARGET are deliberately smaller than those in SOURCE (eg a DECIMAL (12, 2) column populated from a DECIMAL (19,11) source).
When I run this in an Query tool (eg, SqlDbx) I get the messages:
    "Truncation error occurred
    Command has been aborted"
But when I run this using the .net Client (supplied with the Developer Edition of ASE 16.0) no exception is thrown (the INSERT fails though).  The method is AseCommand.ExecuteNonQuery().
    Is this deliberate?
Is this believed to be correct?
How can I tell that a truncation error has been raised?

    Hi Dave,
I am consulting internally on this. To my understanding, this behavior is based on the ASE severity level, as returned in the TDS_EED token. AseExceptions are thrown when severity level is 11 or higher.
Our docs are not explanatory in this regard.  Once I get clarification we will provide something in the form of wiki or KBA or doc bug to further explain the detail.  Apologize for the delay and problems this caused. I guess since the command is aborted by ASE, therefore no insertion occurs, even though ASE indicates truncation occurs prior - makes this confusing.
The message severity, etc is controlled by ASE and the client is just following suit according to the TDS spec. Its just lacking in the client docs. This can be remedied.
ASE does provide the option to allow truncation and not abort.  It's a set command:
    Enter a query:
    1 > set arithabort numeric_truncation off
    Enter a query:
    1 > INSERT dbo.TARGET (S_Name_NVARCHAR,S_RedComponent_DEC_15_6,S_BlueComponent_DEC_12_2,S_GreenComponent_DEC_18_10) SELECT LEFT( S.Name_NVARCHAR,8000),S.GreenComponent_DEC,S.GreenComponent_DEC,S.GreenComponent_DEC FROM (SELECT * FROM SOURCE
    ) S
    4 rows Affected.
Notice though ASE does NOT send truncation message. This is when it is well known and accepted to insert and truncate the numeric data.
    Cheers,
    -Paul

  • Unable to view report from Bex Report Designer

    Hi,
When I log on to Bex Report Designer, I click execute button, it is giving a blank page. It is neither giving any error nor any message. We have recently installed NW2004s and BI Cont 703. Now my problem is how to make report visible in the BEX Report Designer.
    Thanks,
    Subhani

    Dear Prakash,
    Thanks for the quick reply.
I have religiously followed your Blog.  As far as I know any one who wanna setup BEx has to follow this.  It is the one place where all the settings related to BEx front end were discussed and disclosed.  Thanks a lot for your exemplary attempt.
Though you have mentioned about the .NET frame work I could not understand how it will effect the "insert" menu of BEx report designer.  But i have checked that also and its matching with your recommendations.
My question is pretty simple. With sapgui6.40compilation5 with all the latest patches both for gui, BW and BI. Will i get the options of <i>"Report section", "Report section based on Querry"</i>in the <b>"insert"</b> menu of BEx report designer.
The mentioned options <i>"Report section", "Report section based on Querry"</i>  were shown in the webnair of BEx report designer.  Pls check the link:
(As per the SDN these menu items should be available in BEx report designer..Pls observe the Insert menu in the very first few seconds)
    https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/9c059b57-0701-0010-3283-e5e8669f827e
We have installed and upgraded the system to spstack 8 and done all the settings.  Our front end is also updated with the service packs.  But we could not get those options.  If you can give me your mail id i can send you the screen shots.

  • Transferring work from Illustrator CS4 to In Design CS4

I recently started using Adobe In Design for a book layout. I haven't used the program before, but am I finding it relatively easy to get around. However, I have just encountered an issue, where I am trying to get a drawing of an entire golf course from Illustrator to In Design. I have been inserting .jpg files easily into In Design, but when I make a .jpg of my Illustrator file and try to place it into In Design, the drawing looks terrible, it's badly pixelated and not at all readable. I tried to copy and paste also, straight from the illustrator file into In Design but the same thing happened.
Can anyone point out what I am doing wrong?
    Thanks!

jpg is always a bad idea -- its only rational use is to save photos in a smaller file format when quality is not important. Every time you resave a jpeg file, it gets recompressed and looks worse. That said, your jpeg file might not be as bad as it looks -- in order to work quickly, Indesign defaults to a lower-resolution preview. You can use View:Display Performance:High Quality Display to look at it in full resolution (though Indesign will work more slowly until you turn it back off again). And the true proof is in the printing -- print out a page.
As suggested, what you really want to do is place the Illustrator file directly into Indesign. This preserves all of your line art and text as line art, not pixels, and your output will be much cleaner. Also, in Indesign you can right-click (control-click) on the object and select "Edit Original" to open the original file in Illustrator to make changes, which is much more convenient the exporting a new jpeg file and relinking.

you can't use a dotx as a template in any automated way to create report files.
you can add them as a background though by going to Insert > OLE Object and adding them via OLE. please note though this is only good for 1 page objects.

  • CTAS in OWB

    Hi,
    Im trying to use
create table tbl_name as Select Query in OWB
Is that possible to do there in OWB?
    Suggesstions please
    Regards
    Ela

    Maurice,
As far as I know a parallel insert doesn't write the data in the temporary tablespace but into temporary segments located on the "data" tablespace.
When the transaction get commited Oracle merges these temporary segments with the segment of the target table.agree with you but only in case very simple query (insert ... select from one table ). But if will try to join big tables or select big table over dblink Oracle will use temporary tablespace.
I just performed test with CTAS and direct parallel insert (BIG_TABLE contains 175 millions records and has size 10Gb):
    10:04:17 SQL> create table test_ctas parallel as select /*+parallel(a)*/ * from BIG_TABLE a;
    Table created.
    Elapsed: 00:16:08.33
    10:22:43 SQL> truncate table test_ctas;
    Table truncated.
    Elapsed: 00:00:06.90
    10:23:10 SQL> alter session enable parallel dml;
    Session altered.
    Elapsed: 00:00:00.01
    10:32:41 SQL> insert /*+parallel(b)*/ into test_ctas b
    10:32:42   2  select /*+parallel(a)*/ *
    10:32:43   3  from BIG_TABLE a;
    175646535 rows created.
    Elapsed: 00:16:45.45
10:49:38 SQL> commit; So in my case duration of CTAS and direct insert operation about 16 minutes.

  • VLD-1119: Unable to generate Multi-table Insert statement for some or all t

    Hi All -
I have a map in OWB 10.2.0.4 which is ending with following error: -
VLD-1119: Unable to generate Multi-table Insert statement for some or all targets.*
Multi-table insert statement cannot be generated for some or all of the targets due to upstream graphs of those targets are not identical on "active operators" such as "join".*
The map is created with following logic in mind. Let me know if you need more info. Any directions are highly appreciated and many thanks for your inputs in advance: -
I have two source tables say T1 and T2. There are full outer joined in a joiner and output of this joined is passed to an expression to evaluate values of columns based on
business logic i.e. If T1 is available than take T1.C1 else take T2.C1 so on.
A flag is also evaluated in the expression because these intermediate results needs to be joined to third source table say T3 with different condition.
Based on value taken a flag is being set in the expression which is used in a splitter to get results in three intermediate tables based on flag value evaluated earlier.
These three intermediate tables are all truncate insert and these are unioned to fill a final target table.
Visually it is something like this: -
    T1 -- T3 -- JOINER1
    | -->Join1 (FULL OUTER) --> Expression -->SPLITTER -- JOINER2 UNION --> Target Table
    | JOINER3
    T2 --
    Please suggest.

I verified that their is a limitation with the splitter operator which will not let you generate a multi split having more than 999 columns in all.
I had to use two separate splitters to achieve what I was trying to do.
So the situation is now: -
    Siource -> Split -> Split 1 -> Insert into table -> Union1---------Final tableA
    Siource -> Split -> Split 2 -> Insert into table -> Union1

  • How To Insert A object into Conext

    Hi Techies,
I have 8 tables in my designer
and I have two contexts at designer level
And how to insert a object into a context that is not referencing any table.
For Example I have an object like "rownum" (Which should must be added at Universe level only not at report level). Here this object is not referencing any table and I want this to be used in a query where the remaining objects are coming from the context..
    Thanks in Advance..

Double-click the Objects and click the TABLES button and select the table you want to associate the object to for the context to work properly (see below).
    Regards,
    Ajay
