Designing a new small network

Hi,
We are in process of starting our new branch office. This office has one 1841 router, two 3750 switch and 3 Cat500 switch. Could anyone give the best possible way to connect it together . Requirements are Core switch redundancy,VLANs must be enabled,DSL connection to established. Diagram of the network has been attached.
Thanks in advance

One recommendation for connecting your devices would be to "stack" the pair of 3750 and connect one uplink from each Cat500 to each 3750. The pair of uplinks from each Cat500 to the 3750 stack would be configured as a Etherchannel. If you plan on having multiple VLANs extended to the CAT500s, then the Etherchannel would be also configured as a trunk.
You didn't note the particular model of Cat500 or 3750. Hopefully you'll be able to run the Cat500 uplinks at gig speed. Copper if distance permits, otherwise fiber.
If you will have multiple VLANs within the 3750 stack, enable routing. (If you only have one internal subnet, you could do all your routing on the 1841, but would still be good to enable routing on the 3750 stack, better positions you for routing between LAN VLANs.)
Between the 3750 stack and the 1841, again you should run a link from each of the 1841's Ethernet ports to each member of your dual 3750 stack. You can Etherchannel between some 2800/3800 Ethernet ports and 3750s, don't know whether this could be done with your 1841. If it could, beside making an Etherchannel between the 1841 and 3750 stack, you could also trunk all VLANs to the 1841 (I assume it supports trunks). The 3750 would be the default gateway for your VLANs with a default route to the 1841.
If it's not possible to Etherchannel between the 3750 stack and the 1841, you'll need to route across both links. If the number of subnets is small, you might just use static routes, or perhaps RIP.

  • Best DSfW Design for new small Tree

I looking to build a replacement tree and server infrastructure for a small network, 80-90 users at a single location, with the possibility of adding 1 or 2 additional locations in the future. I want/need to make it as Active Directory friendly as possible for use by Microsoft SQL Server and VMware View. The current tree structure is O=parent company down to OU=company down to OU=city and then OUs for each server (file, print, and email) and OU=users for users, groups, profiles, and templates.
Ex: someuser.users.moosejaw.rocketpacks.acme for a user. fileserver.moosejaw.rocketpacks.acme for a server OU.
My question is do I do a name-mapped install or a non-name-mapped install for maximum AD compatibility, I can design the tree however best suits the task so whichever approach makes the most sense works for me.
Oh, FYI, fully virtualized infrastructure VMware vSphere 5.1, single purposed virtual servers for each task, DsfW, File, Print, SQL, etc...
    Thanks,
    Tracy

    tcarlton sounds like they 'said':
    > Well since its a new install I could install DSfW first as a
    > non-name-mapped tree or I could install DSfW later in the process
    > AFTER having built a Traditional eDir tree instead. My
    > question is, given the environment, which is a better approach, if
    > any, and what are pitfalls of each approach.
So my response to tcarlton's comment is...
Hmmmm, well if your current tree makes sense to all involved, might be
just as easy to do a name-mapped install at your parent company level.
With OES11, your DSFW domain can span multiple partitions, and this way
all your users, etc would be in your domain.

  • New hardware - revisiting dns/dhcp on small network

I'm trying to replace a failed SMC wireless router with a new Airport Extreme Base Station on our small network.
The network consists of OSX Server 10.4.x running on a G4, 6 wired client machines, and the occassional wireless client. Things were working fine with the old router, but web activity was sluggish, which I blamed on the router (but now suspect was due to my dns config). The router's wireless function broke, thus the effort to replace with Airport.
When things were working, I had the router dishing out ip addresses via dhcp, OSX Server was running DNS for its internal needs and to resolve for a few of our services that are hosted elsewhere.
The server machine was manually configured to look to the wireless router for routing , and look to itself for DNS. DNS could properly lookup and reverse lookup the server name from all machines.
Clients were configured to pick up ip addresses via dhcp, and dns from the server.
This worked, albeit web surfing was sluggish.
I had assumed dns requests were going through the OSX Server machine, which would in turn send them via the router address to my isp's dns (assuming its not one of the few records in my internal dns).
What I am suspecting now is that the client machines, when my server dns could not resolve a domain name, would turn directly to the isp's dns. I guess the dhcp would have supplied this info??? In other words, the OSX Server dns was not looking outside itself to resolve a name for which it didn't have a record.
Anyway - I feel like my problem lies somewhere in the server's dns. Question: How that the OSX Server dns resolve a request for which it does not have a record? Does it need an entry for an external dns it can forward the request to? Or does the ip address in the Network config's "Router" field cover that?
    Many thanks.

As you are using "advanced services" in the server you should use only the server (internal private IP) DNS on your server LAN. Don't use any public DNS as they don't know your LAN private IP machines names or domainname.
The DHCP server in OS X should be setup to send out only the server IP for DNS to LAN clients and using the server DHCP it's possible to send LDAP info to clients too (you don't have to manually set directory services on each client to find your server).
In 10.5 Apple has provided the possibility of settig up DNS forwarders in the DNS GUI, in previous versions you have to enter them in /etc/named.conf "by hand" using the terminal (pico/nano).
Forwarders (usually your ISP DNS IPs) speed up dns lookups.
As it sounds like you are reusing your public domainname internally you seem to already have setup you public IP services too. This is neccessary for LAN clients to be able to find them as any domains configured in your local DNS will make the DNS server think it's the SOA (?) for those domains and it will not try to forward any requests/lookups for those to any external public DNS (DNS root servers or ISP DNS/forwarders).
If you have another static IP machine/server on your LAN you can make it a slave DNS so LAN clients can get at Internet if your server is temporarily down.

  • Help in creating a small network

I just bought a TC and I want to make a small network with two Airport Express boxes that I already had. Right now the TC is connected and working, but I have also connected the two AE but I can not make them show in Airport utility, when
I reset one of the AE it shows in Airport utility but I can not make any changes.
I have TC set to "Create a wireless network", is this correct? I want to extend my network, can someone please guide me step my step, I am illiterate about Networks
    Thank you

Ok, since you will be using a mix of 802.11n & 802.11g base stations, your only option will be to create a WDS to wirelessly extend the range of your TC.
Here are the basic steps to set it up:
(Note: To facilitate the WDS set up, place the base stations within near proximity of each other during the set up phase, and then relocate them to their desired locations when complete. Also, jot down the AirPort IDs for each of the base stations to be used in the WDS.)
o Perform a "hard" reset on the Time Capsule (TC) and a "factory default" reset on the 802.11b/g AirPort Express Base Stations (AX).
Main Base Station Setup - TC
o Click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar and choose the wireless network created by the TC.
    o Open AirPort Utility.
o Select the TC, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base
    Station menu.
o Click Wireless in the toolbar, and then choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and then choose “WDS main” from the WDS Mode pop-up menu.
o Select the “Allow wireless clients” checkbox if you want client computer to connect to this base station.
o Click the Add "+" button and enter the AirPort ID of the AX.
o Click Update to send the new settings to the base stations in the WDS.
Remote Base Station Setup - AX #1
o Click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar and choose the wireless network created by the AX #1.
    o Open AirPort Utility.
o Select the AX, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar and click Wireless. Choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and choose the same channel as the main base station from the Channel pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and choose “WDS remote” from the pop-up menu.
o Enter the AirPort ID of the main base station in the WDS Main field.
o Click Update to transfer the settings to the base station.
Relay Base Station Setup - AX #2
o Click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar to join the wireless network created by AX #2.
    o Open AirPort Utility.
o Select AX #2, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar and click Wireless. Choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and choose the same channel as the TC from the Channel pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and choose “WDS relay” from the WDS Mode pop-up menu.
o Enter the AirPort ID of the TC in the Main AirPort ID field.
o Click the Add "+" button and enter the AirPort ID of AX #1.
o Click Update to transfer the new WDS settings to the relay and remote base stations.

  • NEED HELP TO SET UP SMALL NETWORK - WIRELESS SIGNAL FROM NOVATEL U760 USB

    Hello -
I need help setting up a small network in my new home in Florida, which has no wired broadband capability - not cable, not dsl. My options are satellite (which I'd like to avoid) or wireless broadband via Millenicom (or now Virgin Mobile) using their Novatel U760 USB stick.
Here are the network components - someone please tell me how to set this up:
PC #1 (has wireless card, but I've connected it by ethernet to the router)
PC #2 (no wireless card; connected via ethernet to router)
MACBOOK, 1 1/2 years old (2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 gigs RAM), running OS 10.58, connected wirelessly to router.
AIRPORT EXTREME BASE STATION, Model A1143.
I'm not thrilled about using a wireless 3G signal as my primary one, (sprint network, claims 600 - 1400 kbps speed), but it costs 1/2 to 1/3 of what a slightly faster satellite signal would.
I have not ordered this service yet. Before I do, I'd like a clear understanding that I can, in fact, set up my simple network, which I'd probably do the same as it's now configured with cable broadband - both PC's plug via
ethernet into the Airport Extreme router, the MacBook connects wirelessly - AND,
    my question is this:
Can I plug the wireless card - a Novatel U760 USB-stick device - straight into that USB slot in the Airport Extreme base station and will it automatically recognize that device?
Or, do I have to plug it into the MacBook and somehow share that wireless signal between the 2 PC's (only 1 of which has a wireless card, so I'd have to get a card for PC #2)?
And help anyone can provide will be much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Em

    from the Airport FAQ #14:
"Question: Can I connect my Soundsticks or other USB speakers to AirPort Express?
Answer: No. The USB port is for connecting a printer, not for other devices."
Im assuming other devices include USB modems.
So, I would say your cheaper route would be to get a second wireless card and just share your internet connection from one of your PC.

  • Design the New process set up for Materials in one physical stock plant

    Hi Experts,
The requirement is one physical plant as two different logical plants in the system. The main issue is how to administrate or how to find the set up which allows one Physical warehouse in Hamburg which we have supplying two Logical warehouses in the system without having thru really physically separate the warehouses into two different ones. Materials physically will be only for one warehouse.
Requirement is for Design the New process set up for Materials in one physical stock serving plant into two different system plants.
Most of the things are pointing in the direction that order Backlogs will not be converted into new organization. We have backlogs for the material requirements for purchase orders, sales orders whatever we have in the current setup; then there will have all are new orders from the certain dates taking in the  new organization set up. These backlogs are very long at least three to four years.
We would like to find some way to have the all the material requirements ending up in one basket instead of two baskets. That still be able to deliver at least in system point of view from two different baskets.
We need to do analysis on one physical stock serving plant into two different system plants that could be done either by material master data or as i understood that could be from PS side.
can any one please tell me how we can maintian this setup in the system.
    Please provide your valuable inputs.
    Brgds,

    RK,
Sorry, the creation of such an end-to-end solution is outside the scope of an online forum.  Most consulting companies would send a multi-disciplinary team to perform this task, and would take several weeks to research your requirements, and come up with a prototype.
Sales order availability checking is described in SAP online help
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_erp60_sp/helpdata/en/93/744b51546011d1a7020000e829fd11/frameset.htm
I will say this.  If your goal is to have two plants, with two company codes, and you wish to only procure or produce in one of the plants, then generally I would recommend using Special Procurement via Stock Transport Order (in standard SAP, Special Procurement 40).  This based on a very small knowledge of your requirements.  I have already cited the Sap online help for special procurement.
SAP online help for Warehouse management is at
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_erp60_sp/helpdata/en/c6/f8386f4afa11d182b90000e829fbfe/frameset.htm
As you begin to read the required topics, I am certain you will realize that this task is beyond the capability of an untrained person.  I again suggest that you search for professional consulting services to assist you in this project.  It will be money well spent.
I am now closing my responses to this thread.  Good luck in your project!

  • Small Network Trouble

I am currently trying to setup a small network at my Mothers work and I have ran into a small problem. Here is the situation: I have ten iMac G4 that I have networked together using a NetGear switch. I now need to get internet to these ten computers. The hard part about this is I need the switch to get the internet from an AirPort Extreme in here office and the switch is located down the hallway in another room. I don't have the option of running a sing CAT5 cable from the Base Station to the switch it needs to be done wirelessly. I will include a link to twitpic (http://twitpic.com/1x1xsz) where I have uploaded a diagram that I drew to give you a visualization of my problem.
Any and all suggestions are welcome.
    Thanks

    Welcome to the discussions!
You might want to explore all the options.
You could use wireless and setup an AirPort Express to "join" the wireless network that the Airport Extreme creates, then enable the ethernet port on the device to feed the switch.
While this should work most of the time, you would be trusting an entire network to a single wireless connection. I would think long and hard about this and use this only if there were no other alternatives.
You could also use a pair of ethernet powerline adapters to transmit the ethernet signal over the AC powerline. Just run an ethernet cable from the AirPort Extreme to an adapter and plug it in the wall. Plug the other adapter in the wall and then run and ethernet cable from the adapter to the switch.
Works great. Faster and more reliable than wireless by far. Newer powerline equipment is almost up to Gigabit speeds...almost as good as running an ethernet cable.
Just make sure that everything is on the same master electrical circuit.
Whichever you decide upon, it would also be a good idea to have a full understanding of the store's return policy in case things don't work out as hoped. Sometimes, it really is worth the extra expense to have the security of a traditional ethernet connection.

  • I want  to design a News like the *LInklist* by XML Form Builder

    Hello:
       Everyone!
Now I have another problem about XML Form Builder
I want  to design a News like the LInklist by XML Form Builder
       I want the result,For Example
    SAP News
           1news1
           2news2
           3news3
who can give me some adviseon about how to disign the Edit, Show and Renderlistitem in XML
    Thanks a lot
    Hope your help!

    Hi,
    In XML Form
    1) Edit form is used for designing the user interface.
    2) Show form is used for displaying the xml form to the end user
    3) RenderListItem is used for  rendering the xml form into a small description like 1News1, 2news2  etc..
Here you need to display only the heading of the xml form
After you create the xml form
Create Layout set  where you need to give the proerties like xml renderer form , no of items to display etc...

  • MPLS for small network

In the past we have always had point to point links between our 3 remote offices and our corporate office. We're now switching to a MPLS network for all four sites.
We currently use Cisco 1721 routers for our WAN. What protocol should we use for routing across this new MPLS network? I'm also looking for a document what else I may need to configure for this MPLS design on the router itself.
We will have 1721 routers at all sites.

    Hi,
for you as a customer the most appropriate picture is: The MPLS VPN behaves like one single IP router interconnecting your sites.
In your case just consider your 4 1721 being connected to one ISP router. There is no MPLS specific config needed on your 1721, MPLS is only within your ISP network.
This means: you send IP routing updates from one site to the "MPLS IP router simulator" and the updates will be sent further on to the other 3 1721. You forward an IP packet to the "MPLS IP router simulator" and it forwards it as IP packet to one of your other 3 1721.
If you are not dual homed or using backups then RIP would address all your needs. Also static routing might be suitable and the most simple aproach in your scenario.
Hope this helps! Please rate all posts.

  • WRT1900AC being used in small network

I've been using the WRT 1900 AC in a wireless configuration to support one laptops wireless internet access.  Now I'd like to add it to a small network consiting of a laptop that is hard wired to network along with 10 other workstations all wired through a Cisco switch to a file server.  Ther file server provides DNS, DHCP and Active Directory services along with access to system files.  I've attached the WRT 1900 AC to the network via the Cisco switch using port 1 for the Ethernet connections.  My problem is on the laptop I connect wirelessly to the WRT1900AC and can access the internet however I can't access the file server and when I can access the file server I can't access the internet.  In my network settings I see two networks.  One for the WRT1900AC that shows internet access and one for the file server that shows no internet access.  I'm pretty sure there's a problem with where the laptop is getting it's IP address assigned from depending on what it can access.  I've tried connecting the router directly to the file server and turning on ICS for that port on the server.  The server can then connect to the internet but the wireless laptop can't.  I haven't really messed with the other workstations but assume I'll have to do the same thing with them after I determine what needs to be done with the laptop.

Active Directory is heavily meshed with it's DNS Server and it's DNS registration.
The Linksys Smart Wifi firmware is designed to DNS proxy www.linksyssmartwifi.com to Linksys Cloud servers for Smart Wifi services like remote access but it also does this for local access to the router's UI.
If you specify your Active Directory DNS server in the DHCP settings to pass to the client devices AFAIK when you look on the client devices their DNS servers will always be 192.168.1.1 instead of your Active Directory DNS Server.
This breaks DNS registration and causes issues with Active Directory services and DNS resolution.
Please remember to Kudo those that help you.

  • Need a product recommendation for small network

    Hello All!
I just started a small computer and network consulting company (in addition to my "day job"). I work for a huge company with several hundred sites, all Cisco networking of course. I am also setting up a small network and computer consulting company to do on the side and will be dealing with small companies and helping them with their network needs. Anyway, I am looking for a entry level Cisco product because my Linksys just isn't going to cut it any more. I want to set up 3 servers and I currently have 5 static IP's from Comcast. I want something that would operate like a PIX515 firewall but that would obviously be overkill for what I am doing. I want the capability to set up port forwarding to the inside from my 5 external IP's. Wi-Fi isn't critical but would be a "nice to have" if it didn't cost too much more. What would be a good product for my needs? I want a NICE CISCO product but not an EXPENSIVE one, either. I am also interested in certification and possibly becoming a VAR soon. Any pointers would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    --GREG--

I would steer clear of the 500 express. Since you seem to be new to cisco products, I would use the opportunity and buy what most of your potential customers already have. Get yourself a pix/asa and a 2900 series switch as first poster suggested. If you are interested in certifications, you will need to learn the command line interface. The 500 express will do you no good as it is all gui. This is only my opinion of course. Oh, and did I see not expensive and cisco in the same sentence. :)

  • New server Network & DNS Setup

I just got a New Dual G5 Server and set it up using the pdfs from apple. Mainly the Getting Started Appendix B page 149 Small Business Setup using the Gateway Setup assistant. I ran into all sorts of problems like being unable to login to the open directory and i think it was my DNS setup that was the problem i then changed the setup multiple times using various How-tos in this thread to no avail.
So i have reinstalled the the Server software and will start again using the following steps.
This is my first post so i please let me know if i have provided enough info or to much?
    SETUP:
ADSL 2 connected to DLINK 4 port Wireless Router (24Mbps) 1 port plugged into Ethernet 1 on Server. Router is setup as a DHCP using 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 for xserve. subnet mask is 255.255.0.0 (dynamic ip address from ISP)
Xserve Ethernet 2 will provide DHCP and NAT via a 16 port switch to Computers and Printers. Setup as 192.168.2.1, 255.255.255.0
I want to use the xserve as a file server, filemaker database server, web server for a test site for some of our content and also possibly an email server.
    INSTALL
    1. Install OSX 10.4 with ethernet settings above eth1 is DHCP eth2 is manual
assigned, no services will be set to start up and i choose Standalone
    Server
    2. Update with Software Update
    3. Setup DHCP for the Clients - Start Service
    4. Setup DNS use " company.private" for the host name and the DNS server ip
    will be the 192.168.2.1 address
    5. Upgrade to Open Directory Master and Kerberize
    6. Setup Sharepoints for Data Storage and Home directory location
    7. Start Apple File Services AFP
    8. Create user Accounts / Groups
    9. Setup Directory Access on clients to see LDAP server and DHCP.
Login from clients to get an automounted sharepoint and Home directory,
"sounds easy when i type it up like that".
Could anyone let me know if i am doing it the right way or if there is anything i have missed wrong order or something important.
Should i change the routers subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 ?
Obviously wireless clients will have access direct to internet due to the router and the routers DHCP. Can wireless users access their Home directory in this manner via the ethernet 1 port?
Should i just let the router handle the DHCP for everyone and plug it into the switch with only 1 ethernet being used on the server?
I will eventually have to have another subnet for student computers in the future.
I would greatly appreciate any advice

Pretty long post, and I doubt anybody here will want to go through the entire setup process. However, I'd re-think your baisc hardware configuration.
I don't know why everybody gets so excited about using that second ethernet port on the Xserve. It's necessary in some setups, but if you already have a router providing DHCP on a small network it seems like overkill.
I'd setup the chain in this order:
    Internet - ADSL Modem - Router - Switch - Xserve / Computers / Printers
Setup your server with a manual IP address (192.168.0.2 is fine). Point it to itself as the DNS server.
Leave the router at 192.168.0.1, and configure the router to assign DHCP above the Xserve's address (say, from 192.168.0.10 and up). Also let the router handle NAT.
Network homes work over wireless, but it's not an entirely satisfactory experience. You might consider using portable homes instead; sync times will still be slow, but overall you'll cut down on network traffic and it should at least appear faster to your users.

  • Need Time Capsule to join new existing network after Uverse box swap SSID

When I first bought my Time Capsule it was creating my wireless network.
Then last year we moved to a new house, and got Uverse service. I successfully changed Time Capsule's config to join the existing Uverse network, so the TC does backup and nothing else. (The Uverse box is in the basement, so the TC connects to that network and all client machines over the Uverse wifi.)
Now I just had problems with Uverse (lost voice service, and so they swapped their box, which means I have a new SSID (and password). So I need to change the config of the TC to join the different existing network. I've tried connecting an Ethernet cable to both the WAN and other-Ethernet ports on the back of the TC, but the Airport Utility on that desktop still doesn't recognize the TC.
    What do I do?

    Welcome to the discussions!
The problem is that the ethernet ports on the TC are not enabled when it "joins", so that type of connection between your computer and the TC won't work.
The other issue is that the TC is remembering the old wireless network and you can't access it that way any longer.
You'll need to perform a "hard reset" on the TC by holding in the reset button until the amber light blinks more quickly, then reconfigure the device using the settings from the new wireless network.
This will not affect your existing backups, but you will need to reset Time Machine to point it as the Time Capsule again.
    Open System Preferences
    Click Time Machine
    Click Select Disk
    Click your Time Capsule
    Click Use for Backups

I am trying to set up Time Capsule so that I can do my first backup (after 1 1/2 years!) with Time Machine.  I have read other forums, but in each case they instructions eventually do not apply.
I have connected my TC to my existing wireless router.  This sits in a bedroom and cannot be moved as a rental home.
I have plugged in the TC and updated the software.
Now - do I want to A Create a New Wireless Network (remember I can't connect the TC to Mac using an Ethernet cable). B Replace an existing base station or wireless router with TC (only intend to use for TM as don't know other benefits as of yet). or C want TC to join current network.
Thinking C.  If I choose C, it then asks A TC to wireless join current network (NO as already connected using Ethernet). B want to connect TC to my network using Ethernet to extend my existing wireless network. C want to disable the wireless network on this TC and connect it to my computer or network using Ethernet - CANNOT do this as devices can not be in the same room.
Or do I want to create new wireless network - first set of questions - choice A?  What is the benefit to creating a new one when I won't be in this rental house for longer than 18 more months??
    Please help and quickly!  Thanks!

    Let me suggest some things.
But first ask exactly what wireless router you have now and what type of broadband service?
Are you happy with the wireless on the current router? If so, then you can plug the TC straight into whatever computer you have by ethernet, short 1M cord with no connection to the network. And use it without affecting your existing network at all. This is trivial setup.
Although you don't say exactly what Mac and printer you are using, is it a desktop? Laptop it is definitely easier not to plug it in, but a desktop you can plug in the TC and it will all sit happily together.
How is the printer connected and to what?
I am not sure why you need such quick help.. this is all minor setup stuff.. and 18months in todays world is like permanent man.
Your multiple A, B, C are more confusing than helpful.
The best choices without more info.. are to replace the existing wireless router with the TC. ie your option B.. but how to do this depends on the type of connection. Is it cable or adsl? Can you easily bridge the existing modem router.. if that is what it is?
Think carefully in the ideal world what would you like..
    and what do you have..
We can probably suggest ways and means to fit what you like to what you have.. without introducing a stack of options that are doing your head in.
