Designing a Table of Content

This is one area that I believe needs to be expanded. I have CS5.5 and there is a very small amount of options when designing a Table of Contents. I can't get it to look the way I want but I can get so close. Here is what I'm looking for and maybe you can help me find the right code.
Title__________________________________1-1
Next Title______________________________1-2
Third Title______________________________1-3
I have individual - stand-alone documents (each being a separate "chapter" of a whole document). What I've been able to accomplish so far is I've got the page numbers to align on the right hand side but I can’t get that “1-“ or “2-“ chapter number or the underline that goes from the end of the page title to the page number. I’ve seen underlines like this in many documents so it can’t be that obscure that they wouldn’t add that option in this program. I have to be missing something.
Thanks,
Kyle

Lets start with the numbers. How is th echapter number making it onto the document pages? is it a section prefix entered into the Numbering & Section dialog, or something else? A section prefix included in the page number should find its way into the TOC without doing anything special at all.
Now for the underline. Any character can be underlined. Just select it and go to Underline Options and turn it on. In this case what you are trying to do is apply that underline to all the tabs, and there are actually two ways to do this automatically, but both require you to create a character style that is nothing more than turning on the underline and setting a weight, stroke type and offset for it. You can use a solid line, dashed, dotted, etc., for this custom underline which means you can get pretty much any look you want.
The first method is to simply apply the style to the tab in the TOC dialog -- you have the opprotunity to apply a character style to whatever you've entered into the "Between Entry and Number" field by choosing a style in the next field to the right (you need to have the additional options showing). This will push that underline tight up against the text on both ends, though, and I like a little bit of breathing space, so I use the second method.
In my method you add some space on either side of your tab (thin space, sixth space, your choice) in the field, and do not apply a style there. Instead, create a paragraph style for the lisitngs (which you should do anyway), then add a nested style like this: None up to 1 tab (or right indent tab, if you've used that) character, your new underline style through 1 character. This leaves the spaces on either side without the underline as well as the listing text and numbers. You can, of course, add another character style at the end to change the numbers, too, if you like, for example to bold or italic. I use this method to make forms for printing with lines where people need to write something. Adjusting the tabs adjusts the length of the lines.

With TextEdit I loose the formatting of the TOC.

The conclusion is that there isn't any easy way to place a TOC

  • Create a Table of Contents in LiveCycle Designer

    Hi Everyone,
Can any one please show me how to create a form with table of contents (TOC). I have a form that contains 8 pages with 8 sections and the customer want
to have a TOC so they can just click on it and it will directly go to a specific section without scrolling down of the form. They want it to work like a TOC that
people used in Microsoft Office. Is it possible to have it done in LiveCycle Designer? If so, could anyone please show me how to create it or if you have any
sample please post it on this forum. Any advise/help would be appreciated.

    Hi,
You can control this in the File / Form Properties  and PDF Security tab.
Select "Use a password to open" and then from the drop down select an appropriate level of control for the users. For example "Commenting" includes stamps, which is what you are seeing on your form.Setting the security to "Filling in only" will prevent the behaviour you are seeing.
This will require you to set a passowrd, which you will have to input everytime uou open the form in LC. Therefore it is worth setting this towards the end of development.
    Good luck,

  • In design table of Contents

    Can anyone help please?
I have a problem with creating table of contents and changing the order of the from paragraph styles. For example, in the document I have the title and author set as style. In the TOC I want the author to come first followed by the title with a page number. I'm getting it to almost work but page numbers are off.
    Thanks

In the TOC you have two options for order, page order or alphabetical. If you use page order, ID is going to list things in the order it finds them on the page, and it starts looking in the upper left corner and works down before moving to the right.
You may be able to solve your problem by making sure the Author's name is in a frame that extends further to the left than the chapter title frame. A screen shot of the page in question would be a big help, with frame edges and invisible characters showing. Use the camera icon onthe editing page of the website to embed the image.

  • Acrobat Pro 9.0 freezes when viewing/scrolling through the table of contents of a document

I am hoping someone can help me or has experienced the same problem I'm about to describe. I belong to the technical publications group of a fairly large company and I review a lot of PDF documents. I just installed Acrobat 9.0.0 (via CS4 Design Standard) and I've noticed on larger documents where there's a full page or several pages worth of Table of Contents, Acrobat 9.0.0 seems to freeze up when I begin scrolling through the TOC. For example, if I want to use the Text Edit tools or use a sticky note, when I press on an icon, Acrobat will freeze for a good 10 seconds, then will allow you to press the icon. It tends to freeze each time I want to make my next edit or even pressing the up/down arrow buttons to go to the next page. Once I get through the TOC pages, Acrobat seems to function normally--no freezes.
Has anyone experienced this? Would appreciate any kind of advice on how to fix--perhaps there's a patch or update?
I didn't experience any of this using Acrobat 8.0--I never had any real problems with Acrobat until 9.0.0.

Your issue may not be related to a difference between v8 and 9.
I have not had this problem on my computers, but a coworker had this issue. For many documents that others were able to open and scroll through without issue, his computer was freezing and unfreezing.  IT determined his graphics capabilities were not able to keep up with the requirements of working with larger documents and gave his computer a RAM upgrade and a new graphics card. Particularly during scrolling, higher demands are made on the computer to graphically render and re-render page content. Documents giving him problems before became a non-issue.
A new graphics card is obviously a $$$ solution, but you might want to check to see if your RAM meets the minimum requirements and check to see if there are any program updates (Help > Check for Updates).
I have had an issue of pdfs freezing, but not specifically in the table of contents areas. If your document has pages with images that have an unusually high number of layers, it may affect the ability to work effectively in the document.

  • Creating a Table of Content (toc)

    Hi
I am very new with Output designer, so please dont mind if it is a silly question.
I have to create a PDF report which has around 15-20 sections. I need a toc (table of content) at first page and at the specified position with page number for each section.
All the sections has some header and detail subforms, so pagenumber is not known at the begining for each sections. I am using xml file as the data file.
So can i use JFPREAMBLE to get the page number for different subforms, and write that on to the toc subform,
i did lot of mind storming but not able to resolve my problem, please help.
    thanks and regards

    Hello,
I was able to create a TOC for a recent customer in the UK.
Took a lot of work, but it worked.
You will have to create a TDF to get the data that you require to be on the TOC, but this is quite easy. The best way is to get the TDF to output the result as a seperate file, and then get the orginal data to call the file as the first thing that you do by using the ^file command

  • How do I create a table of content in a Pages Template (lay-out) document?

    Dear all,
I recently started designing a brochure in Pages, using a lay-out document. The document counts over 100 pages. Now I need to make a table of contents and I just don´t get how to do this...
Any help is more then welcome!
    With warm regards,
    Nina

That sounds more like a book than a "brochure".
You can not make a TOC in Layout mode. The TOC only scans the styled text in the default text area (between the margins) of Word Processing documents and ignores everything else.

  • How best to include additional on-page info (*as well as*) page numbers in a Table of Contents?

    Hi all -
I'm creating a directory / listings document. At the end of the publication, I need to create a "quick reference" section - with an alphabetised listing of each entry, some key info from each entry, and the page number for each entry.
I've created a unique paragraph style for each of the lines that I need to include here - so the Table of Contents is picking them up successfully.
However, I'm struggling to style the outputs of the Table of Contents the way I need: I want a tab between each of the included paragraph styles that are returned for each entry, and then a line return at the end.
    So…
First Hotel name -> Star Rating -> Number of Bedrooms -> etc etc
Second Hotel name -> Star Rating -> Number of Bedrooms -> etc etc
    Instead of…
    First Hotel name
    Star Rating
      Number of Bedrooms
       etc
    Second Hotel name
    Star Rating
      Number of Bedrooms
       etc
    Any suggestions?
One important point to note - I'm using CS5.5… an upgrade is in my future, but I want to finish this project first! (Don't want to switch mid-stream.)
    Thanks!

Thanks. I went there and bulleted align by decimal, but it didn't work on the page. For one thing, when I highlight that page, for some weird reason the numbers from 9 up DO NOT HIGHLIGHT. !  Only the text following those numbers highlight, altho all the other numbers and text following 9 highlight!
Don't know why it would have this weird situation! Seems like a flaw in the design.
I tried moving the little blue cursors above, but I'd need to move it half a step either way to bring those one-digit number decimals in alignment with the rest. For some reason the cursors will ONLY move a full step! So they're out of alignment no matter what I do. Darn!

  • Right-Indenting the last paragraph line in a Table Of Contents entry

    Hi,
    I'm using CS4 In Design.
I'm trying to format the paragraph styles for my Table of Contents.
I have the tab leaders working, everything looks good except that I have entries that have multiple lines, and I can't find a way to format the TOC paragraphs so that the lines BEFORE the last line are right-indented more than the last line (which of course contains the tab leads and page number).
I'd like to not have to go into my text and manually add Right Index Tabs in every heading instance that will be pulled into the TOC.
    Thanks,
    Robert

    > How DOES one set last lines that don't leave room for leaders?
One manually breaks the line short (or lives with no leaders) using a
shift-return. I usually finesse TOCs after I think the client is mostly
    done with correcting.
    > I now note that some of my neat page numbers are nudged to the right...
I'm not sure what that means. If you're using a right-aligned tab (or
two tabs, if you want to right-align the ends of the leaders) your
numbers should right-align on the tab setting. Exactly. Nothing should
    be "nudged to the right".

  • How do I create a table of contents with a nested style paragraph?

I'm having difficulty figuring out how to generate my Table of Contents with a nested style. In this screen shot, "SPECIAL EVENTS" is considered level one and the pink circled "Fittest Firm Challenge" is level 2. Because it is a nested style, it is picking up the entire paragraph. I don't want to put in a paragraph break because that would add too much space in the magazine since there are a lot of other listings like this. I've tried reading through other people's discussions but I'm totally lost with the explanations. Is there a simple workaround or solution to this?

You're asking InDesign to do something it's not designed to do, namely, to treat a nested-style section of a paragraph as an independent paragraph. That's called a "run-in paragraph" in Adobe FrameMaker, and it's been a beloved feature there since FrameMaker was introduced in '89, about ten years before InDesign.
You can make a formal feature enhancement request here: Wishform Many InDesign features have come into being from user requests, so lend your voice, and be patient. Explain why you think a run-in paragraph feature would be useful.
Others have asked about this, and there are a number of workarounds that may or may not be suitable for you. Let's hope that some of the more-intense forum folks can help you with a useful search term for this forum, so that you can review what's been suggested and tried in the past, and what results you can expect.
In the meantime, you might consider inserting the second-level heading in an inline anchored text frame in the paragraph. It will be an independent paragraph but you can adjust appear on the same line as following paragraph. Then you can extract it for the TOC.
    Here's an example:

  • Table of Content with page number for entire pdf

    Hi
We need to merge dynamic pdf with n number of static pdf.
The output of the generated pdf has one of the page called Table Of Content with page number.
For this we have created following process
We created a form using Adobe livecycle form designer to populates input data(xml).
We created process to generate dynamic pdf .
We have static pdf's in some folder location(Eg:C:\temp)
We created xsl to generate DDX to merge Dynamic pdf with static pdf's by using an assembler operation in the Process
There are number of static specification pdf's  inserted in between of dynamic pdf using logic in xsl.
We used bookmark option in xsl for creating table of content .
While invoking the process we are able to generate the correct merged pdf with some unformatted page of table of content
We can explain better in the following way where we are actually facing a challenge:
We need a table of content in the below mentioned format:
                                                                                                                 PAGE
    MAIN DESCRIPTION                                                                                    n
    ID1             NAME1            DESCRIPTION   1                                              m
    ID2POK       NAME2            DESCRIPTION   2                                              m
    FDJKHJG
    ID3             NAME3            DESCRIPTION   3                                              m
    MAIN DESCRIPTION2                                                                                 n
    ID3            NAME3            DESCRIPTION   5                                               m
    ID4            NAME4            DESCRIPTION   4                                               m
    ID5            NAME5            DESCRIPTION   5                                               m
Since the pdf merging and numbering is done  using ddx at runtime, page number tag is not there in xml and  therefore the toc page cannot be populated at the time of form design.
The issue we are facing is that, by using ddx script we are not able to align id,name, description in  table of content in proper manner. We want to wrap particular id ,name and description in their respective columns.
Currently, we are getting the below mentioned result which is not in a proper format.
                                                                                                               PAGE
    MAIN DESCRIPTION                                                                                n
    ID1HDSJHJDHFDJFHD            NAME1FDJFHDJH           DESCRIP
    TION 1                                                                                                    m
    ID2POKLFDJKHJG           NAME2FDJKFJDKFJKD            DESCRI
    PTION   2                                                                                                m
    ID3            NAME3            DESCRIPTION   3                                             m
Note: Page numbering has been done only after merging all the pdf(Dynamic and static) using ddx  instead of the adobe livecycle form designer.
Is there any solution to resolve the formatting issue or any other option to create table of content dynamically ?

    Hi SaCvP,
According to your description, you want to display the table of contents with page number in SSRS 2014.
In Reporting Services, the global variable PageNumber or Totalpages can be only used in the page header and page footer. In your scenario, you can create a table of content using document map, but we can’t specify the expression with PageNumber or Totalpages.
So your requirement can’t be achieved currently.

  • Table of contents from lists or character styles

I have a legal document and I want to create a table of contents that includes, not just Headings (Article I, II, III, etc.) but also the sub headings (eg: Artilcle IV.3) which were created as numbered lists.  If I give the list item a paragraph style it will put the whole text into the TOC.  If I put a carrige return after a List heading it makes the body text as a new number in the list.  Is there some wat to get either lists or character styles into the TOC? Can you have an in-line paragraph style? Here's what the document looks like:
    Article VII Heading
    List Heading.  body text...
    a)   Sublist heading body text
    b)   Sublist heading body text
    List Heading.  body text...
Is there any way to do this so that the TOC reads something like this:
    Article I   Heading              ....... page 2
              2. List Heading          ....... page 2
                a) Sublist Heading   ....... page 2
                b) Sublist Heading   ....... page 2
              3. List Heading          ....... page 3
    Article II                              ....... page 3
    etc. ??
I could do this manually, but this is document is being edited now and again and I don't want to have to change the TOC everytime we make a small chage to the document.
    Thanks,
    Brendan

The numbering and lettering are automatically generated by the List I selected.
It's been a few months since I did this, so I'm trying to remember exactly how the process went.
I've edited Bylaws and Constitutions like this several times for several non-profit organizations over the years, first on MS-DOS with floppy-discs using WordPerfect, later Windows and MS-Word, and now Mac OS-X and Pages '09. With each new iteration of software it keeps getting less painful, but it's still not a piece of cake.
This time, I began with scanned images of the last printed original copy (2008) for a document that no longer existed in any original computer format (1994). I imported the scans into Optical Character Recognition software included with my Canon printer/scanner.
I was determined NOT to re-type the whole document from scratch, so the editing I describe WAS time-consuming and a bit tedious, but still a bit less painful that starting from scratch. I'm a volunteer and retired. A paid fast(er) touch-typist working in an office (and their supervisor) might strongly disagree!
After cleaning up a few OCR-generated typos, I was also determined not to manually re-create the outline format and the table of contents if at all possible. Even 1980's WordPerfect on floppy discs could automatically generate an outline and a table of contents from marked text!
I used Lists to generate the desired outline format similar to the original, in some cases, correcting errors, but as shown in the above example, there are a few A's without B's and so on, because the original document (1994) was formatted that way, and I didn't want to substantially re-write the Bylaws at this time. (Save that for another day!)
As I edited, with the printed original by my computer, I did delete the original outline I's, A's, 1's a's, and so on as I went through, letting List do the re-numbering, and using Style to format the newly numbered headings.
Simple shortcuts when auto-generating lists: a [Tab] moves the active heading to the next-lower designation, and [Shift]+[Tab] moves it to the next-higher designation. Occasionally, I have to just use [Delete] to back up over the suggested letter, and start over again with [Return] to force the next letter/number.
And opening Inspector, Text, Lists, as shown in the example above, might help you more easily 'control' the outcome, as does Inspector, Document, TOC, noted earlier.
    Hope this helps!

  • Table of Contents Issue/Question

Hi everyone, I hope I can put my question accurately into words.
I'm working on a 450 page product catalog in Indesign CS5 for the mac.  The catalog has 7 main sections, in which there are numerous smaller sections. I need to create a table of contents for these smaller sections, however, my issue is this;  my table of contents is based on the product names which I've applied a paragraph style to, but, also included on the same line that the product name is, are several small icons.  I used the library function to put these icons into place.  I put my curser where I wanted the icons to be, went to the library, right clicked on the icon I wanted, and selected place item.  I found this to be the easiest way since there were approximately 1500 products in the catalog.  So, my issue is, now that I'm creating a mini-table of contents for these numerous sections, the icons are included in my table of contents, which I don't want.  I can manually go in and delete each icon, but I'm thinking there has to be a faster way.  I thought of possibly a grep style but can't figure out how to make that work.
Any help would be appreciated!  It's going to take a while to delete each one of those.  I hope I've described this accurately; please feel free to ask any questions if it's not clear.
    Thanks so much!
    Annette

Oh my gosh, that did it!  Thank you sooooo much!
I couldn't figure out how to choose just those characters because I hadn't designated them as anchored objects; that was throwing me, but I guess Indesign saw them as such.
Thanks again, you've saved me hours of work!
    Sincerely,
    Annette

  • Spacing in table of contents

Is there a way to adjust, to increase, the minimum amount of spacing between a table of contents entry and it's page number for single line paragraphs? I know that I can insert non-breaking spaces in long paragraphs, but if a paragraph fits on one line, that doesn't help.
The screen grab below shows an entry on the first line that is too close to the page number. The second line is the way I want it to look, but I have to do a forced return to set it up. Of couse, when I re-generate the table of contents the forced return disappears, so I'm hoping that there is another technique.
If editing the frame.ini file would control the spacing, how woiuld that be implemented?
Is there a script to control the spacing?
I'm cross-posting this in the FrameMaker unstructured forum as well.

    Jay,
The method I use is not obvious but works because of the way FrameMaker seems to work.
For EACH paragraph format used in your TOC, the ones ending in TOC, open the paragraph designer. One of the tabs (cannot remember which one) has a place to specify spacing adjustments. There are three boxes: minimum, optimum, and maximum. Typically, the minimum is set to 75%, the optimum to 100%, and the maximum to 125%. Add 100, or 200, or 300% to the minimum AND the maximum, BUT NOT the optimum, which remains at 100%. For example, the minimum could be 175%, the optimum 100%, and the maximum 225%. Click Update All. I would do this in the template file, and then import the paragraph formats into all the files in your book. Then update the book.
I THINK FrameMaker tries to adjust the spacing using the minimum and maximum, determines where to break the line, and then sets the spacing to the optimum 100%. The result is a line break a short space before the end of the line. You can experiment. The more you add to minimum and maximum, the longer the space between the line break and the end of the line.
