Detecting proxy settings

According to the unofficial web start faq (http://lopica.sourceforge.net/faq.html)
a web start program can find out the proxy settings by doing a ....
System.getProperty("proxyHost")
System.getProperty("proxyPort")
But this doesn't seem to work for me. I set my proxy under firefox, and run under webstart via http protocol, and these come up null. I also tried getting http.proxyHost to no avail. I also tried the reset proxy settings in the web start console (whatever that is supposed to do), which didn't seem to do anything either.
Does this work for anybody else?

These settings were used by Java 1.2 (and maybe 1.3), and superceeded by System properties httpProxyPort and httpProxyHost. These were themselves superceeded in Java 1.5 with the addition of the java.net.ProxySelector class.
Now when running in Java version 1.5+, webstart and plugin will call ProxySelector.setDefault(), which will set up a proxy selector that will dynamically set the proxy when a URLConnection is made. This allows the full implementation of proxy pac files, which may determine a differant proxy depending on the host being accessed.
If you are running in Java Web Start 1.5.0 or later you can call ProxySelector.getDefault(), and use the returned proxy selector to find the proxy using the select() method with your URI.

I would like to set my system network proxy settings to those, Firefox chose. Firefox is configured to use "Auto-detect proxy settings for this network" and this works fine. How can I read out the settings Firefox chose, so I can adapt these system?

    Hello Richard,
Download MozBackup and make a backup of your bookmarks and passwords. Uninstall firefox and remove ALL folders with the name "Firefox".
Install Firefox and restore your bookmarks and passwords. Now you should have a fresh install so you have to make all settings again.

The first time I start Internet Explorer after booting it takes a very long time (>30 seconds) to detect proxy settings.  There is nothing else running on this machine.  I have this problem if IE is the first thing I open after booting.
Why does it take so long and how can I speed this up?

So can you suggest me some thing to overcome this problem .
    Regards,

    Hi
    there's a location services checkbox in Safari-Preferences-Security
    and one in System Preferences-Security-General
However, many websites look at the country location of the isp connection you're using, which is a different matter, & not in control of the user. Some sites allow choosing a personal language/location setting, stored in a cookie.

  • Detect proxy settings and ports

Hello forum, I have a project to find out which servers or applications/services are going through ISA 2006 proxy. The servers comprise of WIndows 2003 and 2008 R2 boxes. I tried proxcfg.exe (pre 2008) and netsh winhttp show proxy (post 2008) but I get following
results. I know that these boxes do use proxy servers because they show up when I query ISA logs.
    C:\proxycfg

         Direct access (no proxy server).
    C:\netsh winhttp show proxy
    Current WinHTTP proxy settings:

I have also looked at registry keys HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings but found nothing of relevance. Checked IE settings and found no proxy configuration. How can I check which application or service is using proxy and on which port? Thanks again.

Thanks Quan, a little background, ISA version is 2004 and the traffic logging is done on a different box with SQL 2005. Which means that all server, service/application or user generated traffic first hits ISA boxes and data is logged in SQL server. Now, I
ran a query on SQL boxes to see if there are servers or applications still accessing old ISA servers and found that many still are using that route. The query I ran is
    select clientusername,Max(logtime)

  • Video times out on hosted website with Auto-detect proxy settings enabled

When going to our companies website our EMBEDDED youtube videos on the site fail to load while on our physical network (using proxy Auto-detect). The video works fine while on the wireless, or using Internet Explorer (w/autodetect).
However, if you manually enter the youtube links in the browser, the video works fine.
When the Firefox proxy is set to manual - the site and video works just fine.
When the IE proxy is set to autodetect - the video works just fine.
I used wireshark to figure out what is going on. The when clicking the video it tries to go straight out (not using the proxy) when it should actually use the proxy.
Our company cannot view our videos on our own network using this browser - PLEASE fix auto-detect bug.
    MORE INFO:
    - We have a Dansguardian/Squid proxy setup - non-transparent.
    - We use WPAD file
Please let me know how we can resolve this issue without coding our videos to pop out into a new window (ruins the look and feel of the site).

  • Firefox not detecting/using system proxy settings

I use a command line script to change among various proxies (and none). Firefox does not recognize when a proxy is turned on or fails to connect to it (no error messages), while other browsers and applications do just fine.
I have tried selecting "Use system proxy settings" and "Auto-detect proxy settings for this network."
My script contains these lines to activate a proxy
    reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Connections" /v DefaultConnectionSettings /t REG_BINARY /d 46000000b10000000200000014000000736f636b733d3132372e302e302e313a313131311c0000002a2e6c6f63616c3b3139322e3136382e31312e2a3b3c6c6f63616c3e000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 /f
    reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v ProxyEnable /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
    reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v MigrateProxy /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
The first line enables the proxy to take effect without entering inetcpl.cpl. Again, this works for any application other than Firefox.
The proxies are all through ssh with port forwarding.
I do not want to manually configure a proxy in Firefox, because I do not want to change this every time I need to change proxies or turn them off. This is not an acceptable solution.
I am on Windows 8.1 64bit, with Firefox version 35.0
Any idea what might be going on here?

Thank you for the response, but as above, the "Auto-detect proxy settings for this network." setting does not work.

  • My Firefox always changes Network settings to 'Use Manual Proxy' after every PC restart, even if I change the option to No Proxy/Auto detect proxy.

My Firefox 4 always changes the Network settings to '''Manual Proxy Configuration''' after every PC restart. I have to always go to connections and change this setting to '''No Proxy''' or '''Auto Detect Proxy Settings for this network'''.
I also tried to revert the values back to default values by using about:config and changing modified values back to default. But it still doesn't works out.
    Kindly help.
    Thank you.

I had this too, I tried running Firefox in safe mode (no add ons) - that didn't make any difference. I could save other preferences, just not the proxy setting. I'm 99.99% sure I didn't have a virus or other malware. This was only affecting Firefox, no other browser I has installed.
In the end I created a new profile - http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing%20profiles - that seems to have 'fixed' it for me - the new profile doesn't have the problem, but the old one still does.
    Windows 7, Firefox 4.01.
    Cheers

  • Proxy settings causing unwanted use of SOCKS

I have a Java app that, among other things, has to connect to a web server and get a response. Pretty simple stuff. I needed to be able to support proxy servers out of the box. So I looked around and discovered the ProxySelector and the java.net.useSystemProxies=true property. I read that it would auto-magically detect proxy settings for the platform. I added the code to detect and use the proxy if present and it worked without a hitch in testing.
I was contacted by a customer stating that they weren't able to communicate to the internet. I looked at my logs and saw that I was detecting their HTTP proxy server and port correctly. I spoke to their proxy server administrator and confirmed everything. Then, I saw this in the logs:
java.net.SocketException: Malformed reply from SOCKS server
         at java.net.SocksSocketImpl.readSocksReply(Unknown Source)
         at java.net.SocksSocketImpl.connect(Unknown Source)
         at java.net.Socket.connect(Unknown Source)
         at java.net.Socket.connect(Unknown Source)
         at java.net.Socket.<init>(Unknown Source)
at java.net.Socket.<init>(Unknown Source)They were not using a SOCKS proxy, only a standard HTTP proxy. The customer's IE could connect to the site without issue. I then asked them to describe their IE connection settings to me. They said they simply checked "Use a proxy server for your LAN" and entered the proxy address and port. I asked them to check the "Advanced" proxy settings and they had "Use the same proxy server for all protocols" checked, and that's it. They mentioned that they had never clicked "Advanced" when setting it up.
I setup my machine's config to match theirs and I got the issue to occur. I then un-checked "Use the same proxy server for all protocols" and everything worked fine. No SOCKS sockets were used.
Hopefully you're still with me here...
Why does Java assume that it should use SOCKS for the socket and IE does not when "Use the same proxy server for all protocols" is checked? How can I prevent this from happening?
Specs: WinXP, Java 6, IE 7
    Edited: Changed title...

    Hello rhimo
Im torturing my self for 3 day with a similar problem.
At first a thought it was a Java version problem, so I installed the latest 6u3.
After a lot of testing and googling, now Im sure that its some kind of a bug.
So, Im using one public web address as a test:
    http://www.dailyfx.com/charts/Chart.html
I set the java proxy settings to USE BROWSER SETTINGS
I set the IE 7 PROXY with the exact server using port 8080.
In ADVANCED SETTINGS, I Copy/Paste the same server/port to all the rest of the fields (HTTP, SECURE, FTP, SOCKS)
So the USE THE SAME PROXY SERVER FOR ALL PROTOCOLS is unchecked.
When I start the web site, everything is working OK, the daily graph comes out, and the java console log looks like this:
    Dec 25, 2007 2:54:09 PM com.netdania.ui.applet.c init
    INFO: Finance Chart 2.1.3
    Applet Browser: sun.plugin
    Dec 25, 2007 2:54:16 PM com.netdania.ui.applet.c init
    INFO: ... Loading complete.
In connect() -> Switched to polling!, attemps: 1
As you can see, the page loads after the 1st attempt.
Java is using the SOCKS protocol with the defined server.
Now, the problem comes when I select the USE THE SAME PROXY SERVER FOR ALL PROTOCOLS.
First strange thing is that all fields becoming gray (which is OK) but the SOCKS field becomes blank and gray.
Whit these settings Im unable to open the daily graph and I receive this java console messages:
    Dec 25, 2007 3:02:07 PM com.netdania.ui.applet.c init
    INFO: Finance Chart 2.1.3
    Applet Browser: sun.plugin
    Dec 25, 2007 3:02:14 PM com.netdania.ui.applet.c init
    INFO: ... Loading complete.
In connect() -> null, attemps: 1
In connect() -> null, attemps: 2
In connect() -> null, attemps: 3
    And so on
I assuming that the java is tying to connect using the same SOCKS protocol as before, but now, the server is undefined.
Ive try testing the same scenario with Firefox but there I find more bugs:
    http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6504564
So, if you decide to do the same tests, I recommend using IE7 and latest Java 6u3.
I think that this is one more Microsoft issue, and the solution will come as sooner as possible.
Please reply me with eventual solution.
    Thanks.

  • Why wont my proxy settings stay when i change them?

Every time i open my firefox browser it says "serve was reset" so i change the proxy settings to automatically detect proxy settings. when i close my browser and open it back up it says "server was reset" and the proxy settings were set back to what they were before i changed them.

Could you describe in a bit more detail what you mean by clicking on the toolbar to open your home page: are you clicking the Home button, or using reload, or using a bookmark?
Does the same problem occur when you open a new window (Ctrl+n), or only when you use your Firefox desktop icon?
''If the problem is specific to your shortcut on the desktop:''
Check whether the shortcut specifies any command-line parameters. Here's what I mean:
right-click the icon > Properties > Shortcut tab
The "Target" line should be selected. That line should not have any extra stuff after the following:
    32-bit Windows:
    "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
    64-bit Windows:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
If you see extra text after that, clear it out, save your change, and try the shortcut again. Any improvement?
