Develop Java GUI to interact with MS Access

I am doing a Java course and got this assignment to develop a GUI application using MS Access to get data and to update information for an automated library system. I would realy like some help with integrating the GUI with Access. I started Java a few weeks ago from scratch and would appreciate all the help I could get. I really have fallen in love with Java and I think that it is a really great programming language to use. I really would love to become a Java expert some day.

Take a look at the Java tutorials page. Theres a tutorial on "Creating a GUI Using JFC/Swing" and "JDBC Database Access":

  • Java-ACT! Interaction with J-Integra

    Hi,
    I'm currently evaluating J-Integra for an ongoing project which requires J2EE app to communicate with ACT!.
    I was working out the example app for java-ACT! interaction provided in J-Integra website. :
    (http://j-integra.intrinsyc.com/support/com/doc/#other_examples/Symantec_Act!.htm)
    It was mentioned in the example about generating java proxies from ACT.tlb type library, however, we were unable to locate the specified file (act.tlb).
    I'm currently using ACT! by Sage 2006/8.0.2. Please guide me, so that I can solve issue.

    While I think a few members of J-Integra do frequent this forum, it is unlikely you will get a good reply here for a none-Sun product.
    As such it might be work contacting the J-Integra support team directly.
    Good luck, Mike

  • Java ODBC image database with MS Access

    hi ,
    Can any one please tell me if it is possible to put and get image from MS Access database with java JDBC ODBC driver? If it is possible then what will be the data type in Access and java. Thanks in advance

    I've not seen a data type in Access that would be
    appropriate for iimages--and I believe Access may
    still have an overall size limitation (this may have
    been taken off in Access 2003). If this were Oracle, you'd be using a BLOB. But the reasoning that follows would be the same, regardless of database.
    What I'e had best
    luck doing is leaving the files in their native
    format and storing them in directory structures to
    keep them segregated if need be, and storing their
    names and locations in the DB.This is what I've seen done. It makes little sense to stick the JPEG bytes in the database. You can't use them in a WHERE clause. They just kill database performance. morgalr's solution is a good one.

  • Connection Pooling in Java Application for interacting with Websphere MQ

    I have following infrastruture at my site.
    1> Machine #1 has below
    - Websphere MQSeries 6.0 (client setup - Slim Client)
    - OS = Windows 2003
    - i/p address : 10.1.11.10
    - Tomcat web server 5.5
    - No Websphere Application Server.

    - Websphere MQSeries 6.0 (Server setup)
    - OS = Windows 2003
    - i/p address : 10.1.11.21
    - Queue Manager Name : qMngr
    - Queue Name (client will put the message) : toServerQ
    - Queue Name (client will get the message) : fromServerQ
    - I have developed the web application in Tomcat web server 5.5 using MQ base classes for accessing the Websphere MQ.
    - Since it is web application there can be atleast 25 request at time.
    i.e. when client#1 request data from queue he must get data related to client#1 only not other than client#1.
    - For accessing the websphere MQ, I am using websphere MQ base classes in Client mode. (Not JMS)

    Could any one help me following in questions.
    1> Since there is 30 request at time so for improve the performance and resources I need to do connection pooling.
    How can I achieve this using base classes.
    2> While retrieving (getting) the message for particular request how can I identify the response message.
    i.e. when client#1 request data from queue he must get data related to client#1 only not other than client#1.
    because In above scenario there are separate queues for getting the message and putting the message.
    I have read the tutorial on connection pulling but I am little confused.
    i.e. default connection pool and MQSimpleConnectionManager.

    Can you tell us whether the swing application that you are referring could be used by multiple client machines at the sametime ??
    If yes my advice for you would be a costly affair yet effective.
    Think of seperating your DAO layer from the swing client and you can make an attempt to make a centralized tier where DAO and business services are handled (also ensure that we you use connection pooling with a good tranaction support for building that tier).
    Think of publishing those as services either by using remoting tehnologies like RMI,Burlap, Hessian or as a Webservice.
    All you'd do is implementing respective client in the swing or client application which you are referring to..
    (if you things are too wierd and what is the best solution to go about the below url offers a good solution
    [http://tuscany.apache.org/]
    And in doing this you'd ensure there is not toomuch load on the Database and you'd have a centralized location where you can start tracing the problem.My guess would be that since the OP said that they have a server that they do in fact have a server.

  • Which is the best and user freindly IDE for developing Java GUI application

    Please advice me if there is any good IDE for developing all kind of Java applications.
    I m confused about which IDE to use.
    I have Searched on Net also. and most of the answers i found was for JBuilder and JBoss.
    But cant confirm until u guys suggest me.
    Because i think this is the best place to ask questions about java.
    Please advice

    If you're developing JSPs and Servlets....
    I've found that using Eclipse (which is free) coupled with the MyEclipse plug-in (an advanced J2EE specific plug-in which costs $29.99USD/year) was the best for me. I've tried several free J2EE Eclipse plug-ins, didn't like them. Wasn't a big fan of NetBeans either, but I liked it tons better than the other Eclipse plug-ins.
    Therefore, IMHO for free I'd go with NetBeans, for a small fee I'd go with Eclipse/MyEclipse plug-in.
    If you are new to J2EE but not to Java, you may want to consider going straight to JSF and Sun's Java Studio Creator. This is not free, but the fee is one-time and development is (mostly) visual using Java Studio Creator.

  • Developping a web simulation interacting with C++ Program

    Hi,
    I want to develop a web site (servlets or applet) that communicate with a simulator written in C++. My question is : What technique to use to develop the client program(the web site)? and how to communicate with the Simulator (c++ program) ? The goal of my application is to make simulation available on the web.
    thank you

    Hi,
    How about using sockets.
    Your Java servlet is the client,
    C++ simulator is the server.
    Since both are on the same machine
    the client should use 'localhost' for
    IP address.

    Hi,
    Can java accessibility be used for developing java GUI testing tool for applet embedded in IE? If not is there any other way we can test Java Appet GUI?

    I do not know of a free tool, but you can use the Robot class in Java to create what you need.

  • Using java to interact with a website

    I'm looking to build a program that will function as an alternate front end for an online database so that users can perform batched operations. Is there a way to have java navigate and interacte with a website? This would be something a macro would do, except that I need to be able to interact with the desktop, among other things. Also, I'm stuck with internet explorer, as the IT people don't want Firefox on any of the machines, so that excludes the iMacros add on.
    anyone got an idea? thanks

  • Issue with assistive access not keeping permissions

    Since a recent upgrade (likely from OS X 10.9.x to 10.10.2) I've had issues with Assistive Access blocking Automator and Applescript from interaction with dialogs.
    If I run my script or my Automator workflow (which basically has the same script in it) I get the error:
    System Events got an error: Automator is not allowed assistive access. (in the case of Automator).
    If I open Automator, and then untick and retick the Automator entry in the Accessibility options within Security & Privacy (System Preferences), then workflow can run again. It continues to work until I Quit Automator. Then it's as if OS X no longer trusts Automator to be the same app I gave Accessibility permissions to.  And the situation repeats. It's much as if it were not code-signed. The exact same issue plays out with Apple Script.
    I came across this info, which I hoped would solve the problem, but it made no difference: http://macscripter.net/viewtopic.php?id=43394 and http://bit.ly/1x3SRmc
    In my Accessibility permissions I now have:
    Script Editor
    Automator
    1Password 5 (which the script interacts with)
    com.apple.security.agentStub.xpc (in case that's being called up and triggering the Accessibility issue)
    osascript (in case that's handling the script and triggering the Accessibility issue)
    SecurityAgent.xpc (in case that was triggering the Accessibility issue)
    I added all these because the post at http://bit.ly/1x3SRmc     indicated that anything Apple Script is interacting with needs Accessibility access permissions.
    My script is as follows:
    set appName to "SecurityAgent"
    set passApp to "1Password 5" (* set this to the name of your password manager *)
    tell application "System Events"
      if not (exists window 1 of process appName) then -- test if SecurityAgent window exists
      set answer to display dialog "The password dialog was not found. Please check." buttons {"Ok"}
      return -- abort if SecurityAgent window does not exist
      end if
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
      set position of window 1 of process appName to {10, 10}
    -- move SecurityAgent window out of the way
    end tell
    activate application passApp
    tell application "System Events"
      tell application "SystemUIServer"
      set answer to display dialog "Make sure correct 1Password item is actively selected (i.e. click it again if it was previously selected), then click “Continue” to proceed." buttons {"Continue"}
      end tell
      tell process passApp
      (* If you are not using 1Password, you may need to change the menu item clicks, below, to whatever is correct in your particular password manager *)
      click menu item "copy password" of menu "item" of menu bar 1
      delay 1
      set appData to the clipboard
      end tell
      tell application "System Events"
      tell process appName
      set value of text field 1 of window 1 to appData
      if exists (text field 2 of window 1) then
      set value of text field 2 of window 1 to appData
      if exists checkbox 1 of window 1 then
      if value of checkbox 1 of window 1 is 1 then
      click checkbox 1 of window 1
      end if
      end if
      set value of checkbox 1 of window 1 to 0
      delay 1 (* gives  a moment to see what's going on *)
      click button "OK" of window 1
      else
      if value of checkbox 1 of window 1 is 1 then
      click checkbox 1 of window 1
      end if
      delay 1 (* gives  a moment to see what's going on *)
      click button "OK" of window 1
      end if
      end tell
      end tell
    end tell
    In Automator it would appear the script is generating an error as soon as it reaches line 5, "if not (exists window 1 of process appName) then"
    I would greatly appreciate some assistance in resolving this issue.

    Starting with Mavericks, Apple changed the way that the accessibility works (see Using AppleScript with Accessibility and Security features in Mavericks) - each individual application needs to be given access, instead of a global option.  A regular AppleScript application saves properties and global variables with the script, which makes it a new application as far as the system security is concerned, so it needs to be re-added to the accessibility list.  To work with this new security feature, you need to code-sign your AppleScript application or make the script(s) in the bundle read-only so that they don't get changed (note that an AppleScript-based project in Xcode does not modify the application bundle by saving properties and globals).

  • Opening a Java GUI with Matlab? Is this possible?

    Hi all,
    I'm developing a GUI using Netbeans 5.5 in Java 1.6. The computational power that this GUI interfaces with will be Matlab-based. My problem right now is getting Matlab to recognise my GUI-class. I've added the .jar to Matlabs dynamic classpath but when I try to call a method it is not finding the class at all.
    Firstly, I'd just like to verify that what I'm doing IS possible. There exists a way to create a GUI in Netbeans, build it to a .jar, and then access the classes in Matlab so I can open the GUI through Matlab, right?
    I've tore through the MatLab site but calling a user-defined class's method is not very well documented ("Just add the .jar to the classpath and call the method using it's full class name" isn't cutting it for me right now.)
    ANY help AT ALL would be greatly appreciated. I've dumped hours into what I assume to be a problem with a simple solution.
    Thanks
    Craig

    And before anyone says "Google" or "check the documentation" I've torn through the MATLAB (mathworks) site and read every page that even mentions Java (beans or otherwise) and I've googled, trust me I've googled.

  • How to interact with google search engine using java HTTP POST

    I am trying to develop an desktop app that acts as an online radio tuner. I want to use google as an index site for actually searching for radio stations online. So I was wandering if it is possible for me to use java to actually interface with the google search engine servers. For example, I have built a gui that allows you to enter search text. This gui will connect to the web. I would like it to connect to the Google site and post the query to the google web servers. Then i would like to began to parse the response( html page) that i get back from the google servers. Like using google without actually typing in the text field on the google site. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to do this with java. If so, what would be the best way to go about doing this. Thanks.

    Thanks for the response. It was actually alot easier to do than I anticipated. All I had to do was create a URL object initialized with the google url(search text embedded in the url - http://www.google.com/search?q=" + searchText + "&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF8).
    Looks like this:
    String google = http://www.google.com/search?q=" + searchText + "&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF8;
    URL url = new URL(google);  // creating Google Url object
    URLConnection connection = url.openConnection();
           connection.setDoOutput(true);
           connection.setRequestProperty("User-Agent", "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0)" );  // fooling google servers into thinking the request is coming from a real browser
           BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(connection.getInputStream()));The content returned by the google server can be accessed calling the BufferedReader class methods.

  • Java interaction with websites?

    Hey,
    I'm been learning java for a few months now, and know the basics well, I have written a few small programs, including one which transfers songs from iPod to computer.
    I need some advice on where to start on my next project. Basically I want to make a program which automatically performs tasks in the background on websites, for example listing an item on ebay, or uploading a video to youtube. And I'd also like it to read information from different pages, so that I could maybe gather a database of prices from ebay, or somthing along those lines.
    Which classes could I use java to interact with html?
    Where do I start? :)
    My java vocabulary isn't great yet ;)

    Ryanz wrote:
    Ok ... I'm checking it out at the moment, are there any other maybe simpler ways? Or can somone explain how to get the JAX-WS installed and ready to use with eclipse?Ryanz,there are few things involved here.
    1).First and foremost you need to findout whether if respective website offers you any kind of Web-Services to serve your cause.
    Just as an example eBay offers set of services to serve your cause to know more about this you can visit the below links
    [http://www.xml.com/pub/a/2005/09/28/ebay-metadata-web-services.html]
    [http://developer.ebay.com/community/featured_projects/default.aspx?name=Code%20Samples%20Project]
    Similarly identify whether if respective other focused webservice providers offer any specific services serving your cause.
    2).Analyse their service specifications
    3).Identify and Plan for list of Data Transfer Objects to which we can bind this service
    4).Implement for a Stub (may be using Apache Axis) or use JAX-RPC or use JAX-WS or any other related technologies to implement your Webservice Client.
    Coming back to using tools like Apache Axis,JAX- RPC or JAX-WS.
    you might be intrested in looking towards the below set of turtorials
    [http://www.onjava.com/pub/a/onjava/2002/06/05/axis.html]
    [http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/webservices/library/ws-castor/]
    [http://java.sun.com/j2ee/1.4/docs/tutorial/doc/JAXRPC.html]
    [http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/edu/j-dw-java-jaxrpc2-i.html]
    [http://java.sun.com/webservices/docs/2.0/tutorial/doc/]
    [http://www.myarch.com/create-jax-ws-service-in-5-minutes]
    It is not nessary that a provider has to provide relvant data in form offering webservices and sometimes they can offer you different specs which could be Like regular Java RMI services or DCOM object or something like Feeds(RSS 2.0/ATOM) for providing Latest updates on your account.I'd say it'd be more work for us to identify what kind of service the provider is provding us and how best make use of it so that we can use the relavant data in our application.
    and believe me in most of the cases only point 4 changes after going through point 1,2 & 3.
    Hope that helps :)

    OK, so you've got this code here:
    private class ButtonListener implements ActionListener {
      public void actionPerformed (ActionEvent e) {
        if (e.getSource () == exit) {
          System.exit(0); // exits the GUI
        if (e.getSource () == snam) {
        if (e.getSource () == id) {
    }Perfect fine way to do this; although I think creating anonymous would be a bit cleaner:
    snam.addActionListener(new actionListener() {
      public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent ae) {
    });But I think that the real question you have is "what do I put for logic when the JButtons are hit?", right?
    I would answer that you want to dynamically build your SQL statement changing your ordering based on the button.
    So you'd have a method that builds the SQL based on what you pass in - so it takes one argument perhaps?
    private static final int NAME = 1;
                             ID = 2;
    /* ... some code ... */
    snam.addActionListener(new actionListener() {
      public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent ae) {
        buildSQL(NAME);
    /* ... some code ... */
    private void buildSQL(int type) {
      if ( type == NAME ) {
    /* ... build SQL by name ... */
      else if ( type == ID ) {
    /* ... build SQL by id ... */
    }That kind of thing.
    Or you might choose to have several build methods with no parameter type; each building the SQL differently, and calling whichever one you need. I did not read your entire pgm, so I don't know how you'd want to organize it. You need to ask more specific questions at that point.
