Development databases

Hi!
I'm new to SAP B1 and now I'm setting up a development environment that shall allow me to develop addons for different customers with different B1 versions and patch levels.
My intention was to have ONE sql2005 server containing all our customers company databases. Then we will have one VMware client per customer that contains the client, SDK and VS2005/8.
But I don't understand the architecture with the SBOcommon database and the company database. Is it possible to have different versions/patch levels on the same database server? If not, I have to look for another solution.
I got trouble with the database when I started to work with customer no 2.
Customer no 1 is running 2005A PL 41. Hence the database and SBOcommon are upgraded to PL 41. Customer no 2 is running 2005A Pl 16 and its company database is PL 16. When upgrading I should not try to upgrade the common database, since it already is PL 41? If I do, the upgrade is just hanging and will not be completed. When starting the client it seems that it will be upgraded to PL 41 since the common db is PL 41, but I only wanted PL 16. Is this correct, is this how B1 is working?
Please, are there anyone out there having a good working development environment for different customers? Please let me know!

Hi!
Yes of course it's a solution to have a sqlserver in every virtual machine. But it's not a nice way as it consumes a lot of disk.
It is a stupid architecture having one SBO-common that only can handle one version/patch level, it should be on a per database level instead. Why is it not?
Thanks anyway David!
Are there any more suggestions for an effective and nice development environment? Or info about the sbo-common that can help?

  • SQL Developer - database connect problem

    Hello
    Just wanted to give SQL Developer a try, downloaded it, unzipped and pointed at Java SDK's java.exe.
    It started, I created a TNS connection and successfully passed test. But when I try to connect to database - it errors with following

    Other development tools including SQL Plus connect an run fine.
    I have 10g client, and I connect to 9.2.0.6 database. My OS is Vista Business SP1, so I though it might be UAC issue and tried running as both standard user and administrator, also allowed java.exe and sqldeveloper.exe through firewall. Nothing helped :(
    Any settings and ideas that might help will be appreciated.

  • Developing database views between Oracle and SQL Server tables

    I am on Oracle 10.2, my organization has many SQL Server databases as well and has now made
    SQL server as company standard so many new databases will be developed in SQL Server. It is of course
    not possible to convert all Oracle databases to SQL Server, so a mix environment will exist. Two questions:
    1.     Is it possible to develop database views in Oracle (10g in my case) which join Oracle tables with tables in SQL Server 2008? If yes, how. I have seen some heterogeneous connectivity setup to connect SQL Server to Oracle, but not sure whether it is possible to develop a database view across two databases.
    2.     I know it is not a SQL Server forum, but many DBA’s know both Oracle and SQL Server. Is it possible to develop views in SQL Server (SQL Server 2008 R2 in my case) which join Oracle 10g and SQL Server 2008 tables? I know in SQL Server, there is way to set up linked servers, but do not know whether it is possible to develop views.
    Thanks a lot for your insight.

    You can create views that join local Oracle tables and remote SQL Server tables. I'm pretty sure you can do the reverse as well but I haven't personally done it.
    However, I would be very concerned about the performance you'd get if you created that sort of view. You'd very frequently end up in a situation where Oracle has to pull all the data in the remote table across the database link in order to apply predicates and join the data locally. That could be disastrous from a performance standpoint.

  • Production and Development Database Connections

    Within JDeveloper I have created a database connection to a DEVELOPMENT database and am exposing PL/SQL packages in the development database as web services.
    I can develop and test successfully the exposed packages as web services, and can deploy and run them to a standalone OC4J container on my local machine.
    I then handover the generated EAR file to the production team who deploy the EAR as a web service to the Oc4j container in a remote 9i Application Server.
    This runs successfully from 9iAS.
    So far so good.
    If I have the same PL/SQL package in a live database and development database, but only have access to the development database, how can I expose the package in the live database?
    Can I have a database connection in JDeveloper with a connection name pointing to the development database connection, and have a connection defined in 9iAS with the same name pointing to the live database?
    Any information will be useful.
    Thanks,
    Claire.

    Per the J2EE "roles" definition this is a deployment role todo.
    I.E. the theory is; take a 3rd party ear, depoyee with your appserver vendor's
    deployment tool, edit the data-sources.xml imbeded in the ear on the fly, as
    deployment happens.
    Bake to reality-
    OC4J 903 is intended to be used with OEM for the J2EE spec'ed role of deployer. I'm
    headed this way, but not started the 903/OEM todo.
    Today, OC4J 902 and 902 Jdev, I deploy to a local instance of OC4J. I take that
    ear to production. I've written procedural instructions on poping open the ear and
    editing the data-sources.xml for the DB connection URL and possible login/passwords.
    BTW all your AppModule configurations will have to use data-sources DB connections else
    you'll have DB connection info littered in your bc4j.xcfg's for each AM deeper in your war's.
    I'd like to hear how this is supposed to work from some other folks? :)
    Good luck,

  • Compiling against developer database, running against production database??

    Hello :-)
    In our company we have a developer- , a test- and a production database, like most of us, I think... :-)
    In former times it was usual to compile forms against the database, that they are running against. But nowadays this is because of new security rules very difficult. Developers have all rights on the developer database, a few on test and nearly none on the production database and even our DBA is (officially) not allowed to use/know the sys password.
    The developer and the production database are very similar (both 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.3.0 - 64bit, Linux), but not totally equal. Of course there are differences in database objects, because it's the developer database, there could be differences in installed patches, and the production database consists of 4 Clusters, the developer database not.
    Is it enough to compile the forms (6i and also 10g) against the developer database and run the compiled forms against the production database or should we compile the forms, that go in production, strictly against the production database, which is a bit difficult because of our security rules???
    Regards,
    Udo

    Hello, Francois!
    Thanks for your answer, but that was not exactly what I meant...
    What you describe is, how it should be :-)
    We develop, deliver the forms and scripts and "someone" compiles them against the production database.
    But our problem is that it would be a lot of "paperwork"(?) each time(!) to get the authorization to get the required rights on the production database to compile all objects.
    We have no "production team" that has all these rights and are not allowed to do so...
    So I just want to have your experiences, if it is enough to compile against the developer database???
    I have made the experience that probably 98-99% works fine, but sometimes there are strange things happening (like not passing variables from one form to another, when a form is compiled against the developer database and the attached library for example is compiled against the production database)...
    Regards,
    Udo

  • Establishing Production and Development Databases

    We are a small organization that is moving from SQL Server to Oracle and have 3 developers. What is the best way to establish production and development database environments in Oracle. By development I mean the area where database development work, debugging, and testing is done before moving anything to production. What are our options? IE: Two separate Oracle instances on the same server, two separate servers, or another way? Due to budget restraints, we are looking for a workable solution that doesn't require much expense.
    Thanks

    Robert Geier wrote:
    Most companies only pay for PROD licenses. I disagree. Most companies have licenses for all their environments. If you are a large customer, you probably bundle all the environments together and you may not have a separate charge for the lower environments, but you are still in effect paying for development environment licenses.
    Oracle Database Licensing - Development and Test InstancesI'd second Hans's point in this thread
    "Careful ... if the dev or test environments are used to support production, they should be licensed with an appropriate 'right to use' license."
    Unless you are building a prototype, in which case the production environment is not necessary, lower environments do need to be licensed.
    Also, check if you need Enterprise edition, or only need Standard which is cheaper (e.g check the features included).I heartily agree here. Oracle's standard edition is generally equivalent in features to SQL Server enterprise edition, so since the original poster is coming from a SQL Server world, it may be perfectly reasonable to go from SQL Server enterprise to Oracle standard edition. You may also want to look into using either XE across the board or the personal edition of Oracle in a development environment for developer sandboxes.

  • Table level refresh in oracle from prod to test or development database

    Hi,
    one interviewer asked me the below question, what is the best answer.
    suggestions appreciated.
    1.How did you deal with that situation?Consider if you have a repeated requirement to "refresh" just 30 tables in a particular schema from a production environment into a development environment.  What steps would you follow to get those tables? What things would you consider doing in the database to make this process easier in the future?
    2. You have an Oracle 10.2.0.4 database set up on Unix. The application is on a Windows server. The system is generally OLTP but with major batch jobs run over the weekend when the users are offline. On Monday morning the users in 2 of the 3 major remote sites that access the application are complaining of general slowness, like the system is hanging at periods and it seems to be taking 7 or 8 times as long to process their transactions and some sessions have been disconnected. There have been no major changes to these environment components (Unix server, application server, network, WAN, etc.). You are not sure if there have been any changes to the application code as the team involved in rolling out module changes are offline; however that team should be following a change management process and recording their changes, and no such changes have been recorded. You are the support DBA in charge of this environment and have a high priority ticket in your queue due to this slowness. Can you describe what you would investigate from start to finish to try and establish where this problem lies?
    Thanks

    Hi,
    1) We need to check the total size of these 30 tables, if they are very huge I would make sure that these 30 tables resides in same group of tablespaces along with no other tables residing there. And then i would use transportable tablespace to clone the tables. If they are small yes i would do exp/imp or expdp/impdp through the read to run scripts.
    2) Since you mention that batch jobs were run during weekends, I assume there are chances that my explain plan were changed (if stats are being gathered) or the current explan plan is not appropriate given the condition that the batch jobs have done huge insert/update/delete. In this case I would prevent gathering stats and would lock the stats.
    If this is not the case then i would check if user is facing issue with a particular application or entire application in general. If it is entire application in general, i would compare awr report for some events like SQL*Net message from/to client for network issue, db sequential/scattered read for io issue. Assuming these both are not the cases, then i would check if the application works fast if there is caching of some table required by OLTP and not by batch process that moved out of buffer during the weekend. The later issue would get resolved after some time in Monday morning. But when I realized if this is the issue then I would have some mechanism to bring them again in cache after next weekend batch jobs.

    It has nothing to do with the user and privilige thing.
    I think maybe it is a jdk problem.
    Maybe you can check the jdk version you are using.

    Any idea how to over come that...Don't use it, use the database's IMPDP/EXPDP tools for copying large quantities of data or whole schemas or databases.
    Also adding the Filter or selection like the Database Export functionality in Database Copy will really be helpful in this kind of situation. The Developer team has any plans?Probably not right now, but you can request this at the SQL Developer Exchange though, so other users can vote and add weight for possible future implementation.

  • Sql developer database difference

    I want to save the diff report that I have got comparing two schemas to an excel report.
    Can anybody tell me how I can do this?
    And also any body know how views and packages are compared between two schemas.
    I see the database difference options generates an alter script for views ,functions,packages and procedures.
    When I do a textual comparison I don't see any difference.
    I am confused about on what parameters the comparison is done.
    please help me.

    You cannot currently save the diff report, but I like the idea. I encourage you to add this to the Feature Requests at the SQL Developer Exchange. This not only makes sure we don't forget, but also gives other users a chance to add their vote for the feature and provides a forum for you (the user base) to brainstorm on how you prefer it to work.
    Currently, Diff creates a hash based on selecting text from all_source. If the hash is different between the source and destination, they are considered different.

    We are planning enhancements to the diff tool, including the area of source comparison and generation. These enhancements will make comparisons more reliable and it will be easier to see the differences between source and destination objects.

    512Mb RAM
    5x9.1GB HARD DISK

    Hi,
    Not sure what you are doing wrong here. I have installed countless times and have never seen anything like this before – especially on Windows.
    Best advice would be to go back and review the Install Guide. If you follow this document carefully you install should work. If you are not following the documentation you can get into all types of trouble.

    I know that this is a big question, but some little Informations can help me. (I develop with JBuilder Proffessional)
    Thank you for your help.
    Wolfgang

    No - the classes you have described (AbstractTableModel etc) are Swing classes - that is, they are Models in the MVC GUI architecture. Database-related stuff (SQL at any rate) is contained in the packages java.sql and javax.sql - The latter is part of the Enterprise addition. You would also need to purchase a database driver (or use the sun one, which is something like com.sun.odbc.jdbc.Driver or whatever). The driver supplies you with connections to the database (java.sql.Connection).
    Alternatively, you may be deploying code in a J2EE AppServer (eg. WebLogic, WebSphere etc) in which case you can use the JNDI to get a javax.sql.DataSource object (by setting one up in the AppServer and doing a lookup on it) and use this to get database Connections.
      Class c = Class.forName("com.sybase.jdbc2.jdbc.SybDriver");
      SybDriver sybDriver = (SybDriver) c.newInstance();
      java.sql.DriverManager.registerDriver((Driver) sybDriver);
      //then use Driver object to get hold of a Connection
      //or alternatively using DataSources
      InitialContext ctx = new InitialContext();
      DataSource ds = (DataSource) ctx.lookup("jdbc/MyDriver");
      Connection conn = null;
      try{
        Connection conn = ds.getConnection("login", "password");
        Statement stmt = conn.createStatement();
        ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery("select * from MY_TABLE");
        while (rs.next()) {
          //columns are enumerated 1...n
          String s = rs.getString(1);
          //or can get by Col Name
          String str = rs.getString("name_col");
      } finally {
        conn.close();
      }Anyway, I hope this helps - you'll probably need to get a book on it (Java Enterprise by O'Reilly is a good one)
