DHCP Address Required option in WLC
I cant seem to find the sytex for this option in the CLI ... am i missing something?

HREAP, Local Switched WLAN and DHCP Address required
Hi All,
if i have configure an HREAP AP with a local switched Wlan with "dhcp ADDRESS REQIRED", from my understanding a client will be provided with an ip address from the hreap local infrastructure. How will the controler ensure that no static ip client is able to access the network?
Any Help Welcome.
Regards, MichaelI posted about this subject on my site (see link below). Since the posting I learned that the client needs to minimumally pass a DHCP discovery packet for the controller to then allow traffic to pass to the client. This is how it "safe guards" someone putting a static address on their box ...
http://www.my80211.com/cisco-wlc-cli-commands/2009/12/30/wlc-dhcp-address-assignment-required-option.html -
Background:
Initially there were 3 SSIDs configured but all of them were assigned a single interface and this interface was configured with the controller management IP address as DHCP server so that the WLC could assign IP addresses to wireless clients, guns and printers etc.
Issue:
As part of PCI initiative, we decided to segment the traffic in multiple subnets based on type of wireless clients; so now there are 3 interfaces configured and each SSID is assigned a specific dynamic interface and each interface is configured to use the controller management IP address as DHCP server.
There are 3 scopes configured for each of the dynamic interfaces/SSIDs and DHCP proxy is enabled but wirelss clients are still being allocated IP addresses from the original DHCP scope that was associated with the dynamic interface originally assigned to all 3 SSIDs.
What am I missing here?
I verified the following:
1. Each SSID is assigned a different dynamic interface (Users, Voice and Handhelds)
2. Each dynamic interface is configured to use controllers management IP address as DHCP server
3. DHCP scopes configured with correct network information for each dynamic interface and enabledAs mentioned in my first post, I am using the management interface IP address of the controller as the DHCP server in the configuration of all the dynamic interfaces.
I have not configured the override DHCP option in the WLAN configuration becuase I have specified the internal DHCP address in the dynamic interface.
But I did check the AP group configuration and there I found that the SSID is not assigned to the correct dynamic interface even if the WLAN configuration is correct.
I will change the AP group configuration to correct this. Thanks! -
Is there a reason why well-known-address config option requires enterprise?
Looking at the documentation for the well-known-address config option the unicast listener - it states
>
Use of the Well Known Addresses (WKA) feature requires a Coherence Enterprise License.
Why is an enterprise license required for such a mundane feature? (asking because we bought clustered edition licenses and our network admins are asking about the multicast traffic).Hi George,
This is really not a technical question. I will give you a call to discuss the rationale.

DHCP exclude address range option config on Instant 2.0
Q: DHCP exclude address range option config on Instant 2.0
A: This article applies to Instant 4.2 and above.
Before 4.2, Use exclude-address as a range option was not available.
Since IAP is getting used as an Edge device, the features needs to be in compliance with industry standard.
From 4.2 onwards, IAP local DHCP server will support exclude IP address as a range.
With this feature we are supporting the following
A. exclude-address ip1
B. exclude-address ip1 ip2
Show dhcps command will show the excluded range and available rangeI found this on TCPIPGUIDE.com that supports my findings.
"One difference between BOOTP and DHCP is that certain communications from the client to the server are unicast. The most noticeable instance of this is when a client tries to renew its lease with a specific DHCP server. Since it sends this request unicast, it can go to a DHCP server on a different network using conventional IP routing, and the relay agent does not need to be involved." -
IPhones not taking ipv4 addresses on Unified Wireless (WLC 5508 and AP 3602)
This is a really odd one...
Earlier this week we started having issues with our BYOD wireless network (802.1x, WPA2+AES) but only with Apple devices (iphone and ipad). Employees with Android or Windows phones are not having any problems at all.
A brief summary of what's observable for the issue:
Radius authentication succeeds (PASS observable in ACS logs)
IPhone status viewed on both controllers (foreign anchor in DMZ as well as corporate WLC) shows phone associated.
Debug client output shows an IPv4 address is actually being assigned to the phone however it appears to ignore it and restart the DHCP request process so debug output shows what looks to be a loop of DHCP request and offer stages.
Infrastructure notes
Cisco WLC 5508s are all running 7.4.121.0 (tried rolling back to 7.2.110.0 .....didn't help)
APs are all 3602I-N-K9
DHCP for the BYOD network is running on the anchor in the DMZ however this was temporarily moved to a switch (had no effect).
Any ideas?

DHCP setup help on AIR-WLC-2112 with LAP1042N
I am new to wireless. I would like to statically assign ip addresses for my controller(AIR_WLC-2112) and my access point (LAP1042N). I would then like the controller to distribute dhcp addresses for users. What is the best way in doing this?
Hi Mark,
You can certainly setup your network for 2 VLANs for different wireless networks. You will only need to setup the switchports to the WLC as trunks. In other words, the APs will simply reside in the vlan you define (access switchports) and they will tunnel all traffic back to the controller, regardless of client vlan. The WLC will then determine which vlan the traffic needs to go on.
You have 2 ways of setting your AP IP addresses as static -- you can statically assign them through the console during initial installation:
capwap ap ip address
capwap ap ip default-gateway
capwap ap controller ip
Or, you can simply let the APs start by using DHCP, and auto discovery of the WLCs via DNS lookup of "cisco-capwap-controller", or DHCP option 43. Once they join the controller you can assign them static addresses in the WLC AP settings.
Now, onto the last question regarding your WAN sites. We do have options for you there as well -- the feature we're looking at would be H-REAP. Traditionally the APs tunnel all wireless traffic back to the controller. However, in H-REAP mode, you can specify the APs to put traffic on the network right at the local switch, so it wouldn't have to get tunneled across your WAN (depending on WAN bandwidth). You still configure the AP and manage it centrally. For more information on this feature, please check out the H-REAP deployment guide:

How can local & Hreap attached clients get the correct DHCP address
I am going to have a single private SSID that can be used by clients in our local AP's office and by h-reap clients on AP's in the foreign offices.
All clients will authenticate via a radius server but how do I ensure that the local and remote clients will be given a dhcp address from their relevant local dhcp server?
What setting are required to ensure this happens.
I require Cental Authentication and local switching.
I have a 2112 WLC and 1131LWAP's
Thanks in advance
RichardYou just have to have a dhcp server listening wherever you're putting the clients. You can change which vlan a ssid is mapped to on a per-AP basis. So if your remote office uses vlan 50 for workstations you just need to change the vlan mappings for the AP(s) to 50, then make your AP port a trunk on whatever switch you're plugging into. Then as long as you have a dhcp server listening on that AP, clients will get an IP from it.

Clients unable to connect and get DHCP - LAP1142N AP and 5508 WLC
Hi,
I have 19 locations, each with 1 or more LAP1142N AP's in FlexConnect mode, AP's are primed using CAPWAP to my 5508 WLC at the datacenter. The AP's join the WLC without issue every time. I have two WLAN's, one guest and one staff, the guest network is open and obtains DHCP from a WatchGuard XTM33 firewall at each of the remote locations. The staff side is WPA2/RADIUS and DHCP is assigned from the WLC. Each AP is assigned a static IP that is not in the DHCP scope. For example: DHCP scope on the branch firewall is 192.168.1.10-250 the AP will be assigned static IP of 192.168.1.1.. The AP's are connected to a HP procurve switch that has a untagged VLAN, the firewall is using the native vlan 1 and so is the AP.
I have been running this network for over a year and it has not had a single issue until the last two weeks. Nothing on the network has changed or has been upgraded.
Now for the issue: The issue I am seeing is that clients are no longer able to connect to the AP and do not get DHCP assigned to them. I am able to get it working, if I remove the static IP from the AP, the AP will reboot, join the controller, then begin working, users can connect and DHCP is assigned from the firewall as it should. However, If the AP then reboots, the AP will join back to the controller but no clients can connect nor do they get a DHCP address. So, I then reassign a static IP to the AP again and it reboots, connects to the controller and clients then can connect and get DHCP.
Attached is a running config from one of the APs
I've found several posts on this topic, in fact the patch of unassigning or reassigning static IP is one that I found. However, I wanted to post this to see if there is any further assistance I can get on this. I am also waiting on my SmartNet to start up and will be contacting Cisco support as well.
Thanks for any help.Alright, so I finally figured out the issue with this. I had a Mobility Anchor set on the guest WLAN and once I removed that all started working again.
What is Mobility Anchor?
A. Mobility Anchor, also referred to as Guest tunneling or Auto Anchor Mobility, is a feature where all the client traffic that belongs to a WLAN (Specially Guest WLAN) is tunneled to a predefined WLC or set of controllers that are configured as Anchor for that specific WLAN. This feature helps to restrict clients to a specific subnet and have more control over the user traffic. Refer to the Configuring Auto-Anchor Mobility section of Cisco Wireless LAN Controller Configuration Guide, Release 7.0 for more information on this feature. -
1142 Autonomous AP not passing DHCP address to clients
Hi there,
I do hope someone can help me out here because I am having a nightmare with a single AP.
Setup is as follows:
5 existing APs already on site, all working correctly plugged into a 48 port 2960, (non poe).
customer wants to add another AP to extend capacity.
Installed AP, (config attached) mirrored switchport settings, (below) and fired it up.
Outcome: if you are on a static IP or have received DHCP through another AP then everything works as it should. But DHCP requests are never fulfilled if connected through this AP. (this goes also for a laptop with an existing DHCP address if you go through the \release \renew process) DHCP is served by a server living on the switch.
The AP lives on VLAN 2, hence native .2 on both ends, and wireless clients should recieve a VLAN 1 address. All the other APs, (1131s) are working without a problem and this is driving me NUTS! Have been through configs and every screen of the GUI but cant find any difference in set up. Apart from different AP models the new one is on a pwrinj4 while the others are on pwrinj3's.

VWLC clients getting DHCP address from management VLAN
Hi,
We have a strange scenario whereby some wireless employees are obtaining addresses from the management VLAN.
Some details:
DHCP managed by MS DHCP 2008 R2 (in remote data centre)
Cisco vWLC AIR-CTVM-K9 running v7.6.110.0
AP's are a mix of 2602 and 3702 (46 and 2 of each respectively)
SSID's are employee, guest, and production devices (all mapped to their own interface with relevant VLAN tag as per normal)
AP's all in FlexConnect mode as per vWLC caveats
Some employees are receiving addresses in the wireless management VLAN. This network only has six DHCP addresses available as it is solely for AP's, WLC and HSRP gateway. Obviously this gets exhausted very quickly leaving us with a scenario where clients are not obtaining DHCP addresses.
I understand that with FlexConnect mode, it will assign IP's from the native VLAN. What I don't understand is why most clients receive addresses in the correct VLAN, but a handful do not, and then cannot get an address from DHCP. Obviously the ideal scenario would be to put the AP's into local mode but unless this has changed in a SW release then I don't believe it's possible...
My question is: How do I get ALL the employees to obtain addresses from their interface and not the management VLAN?
Thanks in advance.Hi,
I think we need a closer look to your configurarion to eliminate some possibilities:
- What is the WLAN security you choose?
- What is the interface that is configured under the WLAN?
- Does your WLAN have local switching enabled?
- If your security is using RADIUS server, do you have AAA override enabled under the WLAN config?
- If your security is using RADIUS server, do you send any attributes to the users?
- You have eliminate that clients that got management vlan IPs are always on same AP or they can be on any AP.

I am in the process of trying to create a guest network using my airport (2nd generation). I am trying to connect my new wireless Vizio to my network...
I have decifered that I can no longer use the same IP address for all devices on my network in order to accommodate my TV. To create a guest network I believe I need to begin providing numbers to each device. In trying to create a DHCP range I get error messages regarding beginning and ending DHCP address numbers. How do I choose appropriate beginning and ending numbers? Both are provided automatically but create error messages.I am not sure if Tesserax is online this evening so will answer this and ask for his input as well.
AirPort Utility has detected that you have another device acting as a router on your network. You may call this device your "modem", but it is likely a gateway....combination modem and router in one box.
If you could provide the make and model number of your "modem", we can provide more details and answers.
You only want one device acting as a router on a network and your gateway is already handling those services. Any other routers....(your AirPort Extreme is a router as well)...need to be configured in Bridge Mode to work correctly on the network.
If you do not configure the AirPort Exteme in Bridge Mode, you will have two devices both trying to act as routers on your network. This will cause IP address conflicts and other problems that will not allow the network to function correctly.
I suggest that you configure the AirPort Extreme as AirPort Utility recommends....Bridge Mode.
Now we run into somewhat of a Catch 22 situation....
Bridge Mode is the correct way to configure the AirPort Extreme to work with your gateway device. But, the Guest Network cannot be enabled in this type of setting.
The AirPort Extreme needs to connect to a simple modem...not a gateway device....if you want to have the option to enable the Guest Network feature.
It is possible that your gateway might be able to be configured as a simple bridge modem. That is a question for the manufacturer of the modem/router or gateway device. -
RVS4000 won't get WAN DHCP address
I just tried replacing a cheap domestic router/switch with an RVS4000 V2 on our work network. This has a WAN connection to a cable modem for internet access via a dynamic IP address.
When I first connected the RVS4000 it got a WAN ip address via DHCP of 192.168.100.11. This is the type of IP address we get when there is an upstream problem with our ISPs cable network, and sure enough we had no internet access. The RVS4000 was set to use DHCP on the WAN interface. So I logged a support call with our ISP but they said there were no problems at their end.
I then swapped the RVS4000 out for the original router. This worked fine and got a WAN DHCP address of 77.xxx.yyy.zzz as it should. Swapped back to the RVS4000 and back to the same problem of getting a 192.168... address.
So, I downloaded the latest firmware from Cisco, which was V2.0.3.2 and flashed the RVS4000.
I then tried again connecting the RVS4000 to the cable modem but this time it would not get any WAN DHCP address at all. On the Status/Gateway page of the web interface it said that the WAN interface was down. However, on the front panel there was a yellow light indicating a live connection on the internet port.
Any suggestions? I am assuming there must be a fault, but thought I would check for advice before sending it back.Hi Nick,
Connect your computer directly to the modem, obtain the right IP address. Then put the RVS4000 back to the modem connection. Go to the set up, MAC ADDRESS CLONE, Enable this feature then use the option "clone my pc mac".
Then wait 1-2 minutes and refresh the WAN.
Basically this feature puts your computer's MAC on the router WAN interface. You can also use the previous router's WAN MAC if you know it and want to manually type it in.

Where can I find the DHCP address of my AirPort?
I am trying to install wirelessly a Foscam camera. Apparently I need the DHCP address of my AirPort Extreme, but I'm not sure where or how to find it. Is it the same as the IpV4address? Sorry, but I'm lost on this. Thanks.
CayleenJust open the airport utility in the Mac or ipad or whatever you use.
Click on the Extreme and it will open a summary page.. this is the short summary.
You can also hold down the option key and double click the icon for the full summary.
Read carefully what is in the summary.. IP address is WAN..
LAN IP address is the IP of the Airport.. as mine is bridged they are both the same.. In yours it is the LAN side you are after.. and yes it is the IPv4 address. -
HH5 won't issue DHCP addresses to new devices
My HH5 has stopped issuing DHCP addresses to new wifi devices. It not a problem on laptops etc, as manually entered addresses work but it's a no go for smartphones. Existing wifi devices continue to work ok.
I've reset to factory settings twice with no luck but trying another router linked to my old white VDSL modem works fine.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks, RogerThis is not a large scale deployment.
If you want to test & see the difference you can create DHCP pool either on your DHCP server or WLC connected switch.
It does not make sense defining DHCP at different places if you have a proper DHCP server. (typically WLC DHCP use for guest services where WLC placed in a DMZ where no direct connection with other corporate services & from security perspective you do not won't to mix these traffic with your corporate traffic)
