DHCP to pass DNS asssigned clients

Hi all,
I'm using the DHCP server to asssign IP address to my clients.
The problem is that the DNS server only recognize the machines with the static IP's configured in the DNS machines section.
Is there a way to configure the DHCP (or the DNS) to share information so the the DNS will recognize all clients connected throgh DHCP?
Thanks,
Ziv

I set generic forward/reverse entries for the entire zone. This way, every IP, whether static or dynamic, will have a forward/reverse entry.
This would take a while by hand, but I use an excel worksheet to automate it. Just enter domain and subnet, and then copy/paste into Terminal.
If you are comfy in terminal and modifying zone files, I can send it to you.

  • DHCP not issuing DNS to client.

My xServer is using OSX Server 10.4.10 and is our networks DHCP server. When I set a client machine to automaticaly get its settings it correctly gets its IP address, Subnet Mask and Gateway. However it will not connect to the internet until I add the DNS settings manually.
I cannot find any reason why this should be. This must be some stupid setting I am missing, any help would be very kind.

It is a new server and I have been trying to configure it. It does not work properly and I have turned to these forums in the hope that somene here would be able to tell m what I have done wrong. Kostas I don't really understand why you are asking me this.
Wjat I have should be a ver simple thing to configure I a have a network which is going to use the xServe as its Gateway, DCHP Server and mail server. I have allocated the mailserver the internal I address of 192.168.101.40 and my ISP has given me an ip of 62.49.189.82 for the WAN side. At the moment it seems to work, except for three things, which may be related(DNS, FTP & Host names), my plan was to fix the first and see if the others goes away.
The first problem is that client machines are not recieving the DNS settings and so they cannot connect to the internet unless I manually provide them with the ip address of the xServer.
I have submitted a couple of screenshots via pdf documents to show you my settings, and I will be very greatful if you can see what I have done wrong. Have I provided enough information for someone to be able to help me. Most of the settings I have made I copied from my old machine (A Cobalt Qube) which the xServe replaces. Until the Qube failed it worked without any problems for 5 years. I don't understand why it is that this server seems so much more difficult to configure than the Qube.
Apple has a good reputation for providing easy to configure machines, this software seems to have bypassed the QC check on software design.

  • Passing DNS server addresses through DHCP?

I'm setting up NAT & DHCP (both as a DHCP client & DHCP server) on a 2621. Since the DNS server address(es) are received on the router's interface configured as a DHCP client, is there a way to pass these (possibly dynamic) address(es) on the internal network clients? What I see in the DHCP server functionality is that the option specifying what DNS server(s) are passed on to clients is hard coded. If hard coding the option is my only choice, do I have any guarantee that the ISP will always use the same IP address(es) for its DNS servers?
    Any insight would be appreciated.

Thats exactly what the 'import all' command is for.
In your DHCP server, if you supply the command 'import all', it will seek the DHCP information that was given to it on the interface that has "ip address dhcp". It will store the information like DNS into your DHCP server, and then send that out to all devices receiving DHCP addresses from your server.

  • DHCP Name Protection & DNS Records

How correlates DHCP Name protection & DNS records for domain PC? We found a lot of old records from PC's in DNS, and I'm just wondering, does DNS (or DHCP) removes records about PC, which were removed from AD (not gracefully, just deleted computer
    account)?

    Hi,
If you want the DHCP server to register the DNS records for the DHCP clients, you need to configure the DNS configuration and options settings on DHCP server. In addition, it seems that Windows DHCP clients cannot update their records with the DNS server themselves,
but DHCP server can be configured to perform updates for both Windows DHCP clients and non-Windows DHCP clients. The links below may be helpful to you:

  • Configuring DNS when clients get DHCP from a Windows server

    Hi
I'm getting to grips with OD and have managed to configure a test environment at home with static IPs and all the DNS entries being entered manually for each computer.
However, how do I configure the DNS in an environment where clients get their IPs from a Windows DHCP server (which I have no access to)?
Setting clients to have static IPs is not an option nor enabling DHCP on the Mac server, I suspect.
    Your help is really appreciated.
    Steve

    Hi
    Your suspicion is correct.
To be honest I would what is available on the Windows Server as the basis for your Open Directory deployment. If the Windows Server is already the DHCP Server odds are it is also the DNS Server. DNS can be provided to your clients using the Windows based DHCP service.
If you have no direct access to the windows server you should be able at the least ask the windows administrator to add a Host Record with a Reverse Pointer for the OSX Server. Make sure its resolving correctly first using the relevant tools first then add the IP address of the Windows Server in the network preferences pane on your OSX Server. Thereafter you should be able to promote from Standalone to Open Directory Master without too many problems.
If the Windows Server is using .local as its FQDN then it could scupper any chances you have of providing OSX LDAP services to your mac clients. It can work with .local, its just better if its not used.
    Hope this helps – Tony

  • Lion Server not handing out DHCP addresses to Snow Leopard client

I have been pulling my hair out over this.
    Here is the layout
Lion Server running on the newest Mac Mini and doing mail, DNS, DHCP, Software update and has a valid, not self assigned, certificate
3 clients running Lion Desktop (2 iMACs and a MBP pro (all no more that a year old and all woth the current updates)
1 client running Snow Leopard Desktop (last years 13 inch MBA)
The 3 Lion clients can get dhcp fro mthe Lion server without any issue
The SL client cannot get a DHCP address from the Lion server
A tcpdump shows the DHCP request coming from the MAC address of the SL client but no response from the Lion Server and nothing showing a deny in the logs for the DHCP server or any other system/kernel logs. The Lion clients all show the request and reply for them. All 4 clients currently have a static assignment in DHCP but even if I remove them all and do auto-assign for everything or even each one individually, the SL client will not get an address both on the Wifi and Ethernet (I have the USB ethernet adapter).
I also have an Aiport Extreme and if I use that for the DHCP server then all clients get the addresses. I know the DHCP server in the extreme cannot be shut down but if you give the extreme a static address then assign dhcp on the extreme to only give out one address and that is the same one that is statically assigned then it "thinks" it is out of addresses and no longer tries to assign addresses
At first I thought there was a conflict between the extreme and the Lion server but as I mentioned above, tcpdump clearly shows the requests going right to the Lion server
I'm usually pretty good at this kind of thing but this one has me stumped. I'm thinking bug, anyone else run into this yet?

  • Removing DHCP failover removes DNS A records

We are running a windows 2012 r2 domain with 4 DCs all configured as DNS servers. One of the DCs is also our DHCP server. We configured a second dhcp server in January and joined it in failover mode. It was fine for a couple weeks, but then we got spammed
with 20291 and 20292 errors. We decided to remove the failover relationship and unauthorize the second dhcp server which we did without any errors. However when we rebooted the original dhcp server, we immediately lost over 30 A records in dns, mostly printers,
and we found that the dns server ip addresses on the nics of the dhcp server were changed to invalid addresses. Is there anything known that could explain this behavior? Otherwise the server seems to be working fine, and diagnostics (dcdiag, repadmin, event
log) are not showing any errors.

    Hi,
Was the second DHCP server also a DC? Which kind of DHCP Failover Modes did you used?
Based on my experience, a DHCP server can register and update DNS PTR and address A resource records on behalf of its DHCP-enabled clients. I assume the lost A
records may be due to the IP address of the DNS server was changed. Did you configure a static DNS server in the DNS settings on the DHCP server? I assume that you select "Obtain DNS server address automatically" as if you define a DNS
server, it won't be changed after reboot.
In general, it would be better to point the preferred/secondary DNS server to the DC instead of obtaining the DNS server address automatically.
Besides, for event ID 20291, you can refer to the KB below:

  • DNS in DHCP Pool (Internal DNS issue)

I know that we can setup multiple DNS server under DHCP pool. But I like to make sure the order.
    I have multiple branch offices.
Let us say that Branch 1 office has a router with 10.30.1.1 as default gateway.
Our internal DNS is 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2 as Pri and Sec.
My order of DNS server is like below.
    1. gateway
    2. internal DNS
    3. public DNS provided by ISP
I saw couple of issues that when I put internal DNS first. Particular situation is when IPsec is not working, users could not access internet through domain name because they had internal DNS which is not reachable.
But, when gateway is first order, I am not sure whether user are able to access internal website because gateway DNS doesn't have internal DNS records.
So, my question is that. what should be the best order for DNS setup under DHCP among default gateway, internal DNS and public DNS?  Our current setup doesn't have even gateway address, it only has internal DNS addresses only.
    ip dhcp pool ccp-pool1
    network 10.30.1.0 255.255.255.0
    domain-name test.org
    default-router 10.30.1.1
    netbios-name-server 10.30.1.1
    dns-server  10.30.1.1 10.0.0.1 10.0.0.2 24.25.5.60

    Thank you, Richard.
You are right. when I setup router IP for DNS server in DHCP pool. it did not work.
Let me ask regarding external DNS forwarding.
I like to know the process of exteranl DNS.
User --> Internal website --> OK with internal DNS
User --> External website --> Internal DNS forwarding to External DNS
We have our own external DNS (ns), in this case, if external DNS (ns) is down, every branch users are not able to resolve any external IP because internal DNS can't get reply from external DNS?
    2nd question)
IPsec is split-tunneled, but in this case, every DNS request goes internal DNS which is located in HQ and goes back through IPsec? Usually Split tunnel doesn't go internet traffic through IPsec but internet directly.
    3rd Question)
what is for ip name-server x.x.x.x   when I setup ip name-server 8.8.8.8 and I tried to ping 8.8.8.8 from router, it didn't work. Am i missing something?

  • Time Capsule as DHCP Router and DNS server for larger network - too taxing?

Ok, let me say first that I'm no networking expert, but I have tried to learn a decent amount over the years. I haven't got quite gotten o the level of combing router event logs, though I intend to do that as my next step. My question here though is if my overall network strategy is flawed.
My setup at home is one that may be a bit more extensive than most users have:
Cable modem -> Time Capsule -> Multiple gigabit switches (business grade) -> Wired Cat5e throughout the house and 2 Airport Extremes. I don't know how many total wired and wireless clients I have, but it may be between 30 and 40 (only a few are computers with the rest being game systems, networked DVRs, audio streamers, NAS, etc)
At the moment, the Time Capsule only backs up one machine - a MBP (I have external HDDs connected directly to the desktops). I don't use the TC's HDD for anything else. Also, I have the network configured so that the TC handles DHCP addressing and NAT. The Airport Extremes are in bridge mode.
For the most part, everything works very well. Internet speeds are good, audio streaming works well, no problems with TC backups, etc. The only issue I've run into are dropouts when streaming video content on the network from one device to another (not form the internet). Basically, the stream will pause and then an error will pop up on screen saying that there was a network problem. Now, I know that the specific devices themselves may have issues of their own, but since it's happened on more than one system, I'm wondering if there is a common network culprit- expecting the Time Capsule to handle its duties especially while it is doing a backup.
Here are a few thoughts I have:
1 - From a technical standpoint, I don't know if all client to client network traffic goes through the TC. I was thinking that communication could happen between devices on the same switch without having to go up to the TC and then back down, but maybe I'm wrong. If I am wrong, that certainly is a bottleneck right there. I'm not segregating the video streamers to their own subnet on a new router to isolate the traffic. I'm also not sure if the bottleneck is impacted by static vs dynamic IP addressing. IOW, I don't know if setting the devices up with static IPs would change the flow of traffic to not have to go through the TC (just flow across the switch) or not.
2 - Long ago in a different network setup, I had allowed the wireless access points to assign IPs. However, I found that doing so sometimes created problems accessing some of those devices from a computer or device on a different subnet. As such, I switched over to having the router connected to the modem do all the IP addressing. Maybe this is a bad idea given the temporary nature that some devices will hop on and off the network.
3 - Additionally, in the interests of getting better wireless coverage over the whole house, I switched to using 2 airport extremes configured to use the same SSID (so that devices moving around the house wouldn't need to specifically change networks in order to get better signal). I guess I could let one of those 2 handle IP addressing while the other is in bridge mode (pointing to the primary Extreme vs the TC).
4 - Kind of getting back to the TC as the bottleneck, maybe it shouldn't handle network wide DHCP and NAT duties. If TC backups take network priority, such that other kinds of traffic could hiccup, then I probably need to rethink where the TC should exist in the network. Or, maybe it would be enough to just have the stream sensitive components be on their own subnet.
I know there are potentially multiple flaws in my current strategy, so any suggestions or attempts at correcting my assumptions would be helpful.
    Thanks!
    Jeff

    Welcome to the discussions!
1 - Everything goes through the router when it is setup to handle DHCP and NAT
2 - You want your main router, the TC, to handle all DHCP and NAT functions. It will handle up to 250+ connections, so 30-40 devices won't be much of a challenge
3 - Keep both AirPort Extremes in bridge mode to allow the TC to handle the things in #2 above. If you setup an Airport Extreme to give out IP addresses, you'll create a Double NAT issue on your network...which can slow down communications between devices...the thing you are trying to avoid. If you use Xbox live or other interactive services, the online features will not function with a Double NAT on your network.
4 - You want the TC to handle all DHCP and NAT functions as in #2. I assume that you have no single run of CAT5e more than 300 feet.
5 - If you want to create separate sub nets correctly (the AirPorts won't allow you to do this as they are designed for basic home networking), you'll need to look at routers for professional and commercial use, like Cisco.
With as many devices as you have, you may be running out of bandwidth at times. If you only notice the issue during Time Machine backups, and you don't need to backup each hour, take a look at Time Machine Editor to setup backups whenever you like, maybe once a day at 2 AM when things on the network are quiet.
My suggestions are of course opinions. Hopefully you'll receive some other possibly differing views.

  • Different signed jars need to be passed to the client.

    Hi,
My requirement is that I have a list of my jar files that are signed by me and a set of another jar files that are not signed by me, but a third party. I require that these be signed by the third party only. I need to pass this files on to the client.
I cannot put the jars with different signatures under the same jnlp.
I am trying to embed one jnlp (the one that has third party signed jars) inside the main jnlp (the jnlp that will be called from my html). But I am not able to do so,
Please provide any help. Also is there any other approach that can be used.
    Thaks in advance.

    tcstcs,
One thing you could do is manually go in and delete the 3rd party's signature from the second JAR file, and re-sign that jar with your own signature. I'm not 100% sure this is what you should be doing, but you could give it a shot. Open up the 3rd party JAR in WinZip and delete the meta-inf path. This contains the signature. Now you can re-sign that jar with your own signature, and they will all match up so you can use them in the same JNLP file. Hope this helps,
    Mark

  • Errors are not passed to the client database

    Hello,
We are using Mobile Client 7.1 with MaxDB database.
We have a problem with the synchronization. We are developing a
notification handling application. The problematic scenario is as
    follows:
The existed notification is modified on the client side. Then the
client performs the synchronization and the changes are passed to the
backend via DOE. The syncstate field of the NOTIFICATION table is 202
(during update). BAPI Wrapper returns an error during the update (i.e.
because the object is locked or some other reason...). The client
performs the synchronization one more time in order to receive the
feedback. This synchronization fails and when we check in the trace
file what is the problem, we see there the content of the error message from the
backend and the error "Column index 1 was not found". The syncstate field is not changed to 301 or some other value, it still remains 202. The message is stucked and it's not possible to
do anything with it, only to recover the device.
    What is the problem?
    Thanks in advance,

So i'm trying to use my own router, and it HAS TO include Option 61 "Client identifier" in it's DHCP Discover packet. But i noticed that if that option is included i don't get a DHCP Offer back from FiOS! I tried throwing my MAC in there but no love. What does FiOS expects to see in there? It's a very technical question so if i can't get help here how can i contact an engineer that would be able to answer this?

Welcome to the forums.  Just so you know, this is a peer-to-peer support forum.  Verizon does not answer questions here.
Sometimes the Verizon moderators escalate issues to the support team, which is an extension of the Verizon folk you can reach by using the "contact us" link at the bottom of these pages.  If that happens to your issue, be sure to follow the instructions the moderators post.
Unfortunately, I do not know of any methods to reach Verizon's network engineers.  They keep them very well separated from customers.  Verizon keeps their residential customer contact very focused on the public support channels.
It's possible some of the other users here may know details about your question, but I'm not one of them.
    Good Luck.

  • Form Variables Don't Pass for Some Clients

Recently, I’ve noticed some problems on one of my pages
where form field variables aren’t passing to my action page.
As far as I can tell, this is a new problem.
This is the error I’m getting:
    Error resolving parameter FORM.EMAIL
The specified form field cannot be found. This problem is
very likely due to the fact that you have misspelled the form field
    name.
The error is thrown when a cfquery is unable to find the form
    variable.
The query looks, basically, like this:
    <cfquery name="Iogin" datasource="dsn">
    SELECT Count(*) AS Match
    FROM Users
    WHERE users.email = '#FORM.email#'
    AND users.password = '#FORM.password#';
    </cfquery>
I know I could squash these errors with a cfparam or with
other error checking, but what I’m really concerned about is
why the form variables aren’t there. I have tested the form
on a number of my internal clients and have not been able to
replicate the error as it is being triggered from outside clients.
I am able to submit a blank form or a complete form without any
errors being thrown. I have established that the form submissions
are coming from my site and are not being submitted by an outside
    domain.
    QUESTIONS:
    1. Does anyone know what might be happening to cause the form
variable to disappear? Shouldn’t all the forms variables be
submitted when a user hits the submit button, regardless of whether
there is data in the form field?
    2. Could a firewall on the clients’ end be withholding
the form variables without notifying the user?
    3. Have there been any recent changes to browsers that could
    be holding back form variables?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    @Azadi

from your posts it looks like this happens to different forms
in your application (you mentioned the email field and also a
select box, which is presumably in some other form)
I was able to resolve the problem with the second form (the
one with the select box, not the one posted above). A JavaScript
resided on that action page which triggers a service. The service
(similar to GoogleAds) receives the page’s url from the
JavaScript and then the service comes back and loads the page to
evaluate the page’s content. The result: Action pages being
loaded with no form content. My error reporting, very similar to
what insuractive suggested, helped solve this problem.
HOWEVER, we still periodically have trouble with the other
form. I know from speaking with at least two users that the problem
is a direct result of users following the planned application
flow—form to action page. So this discussion is still
    relevant.

This is a good thought. I’m embarrassed to say that I

turned off. I will try this and report back.
