Dhcpcd and hostname

After upgrading today to dhcpcd 5.2.12-4. I rebooted and when opening a terminal saw the hostname was the hostname provided by DNS not what is set in /etc/rc.conf and /etc/hosts for 127.0.0.1 as it had previously been. Any ideas?

After a little digging, I have found a work around and opened a bug report.

    I was able to manually place the dhcpcd commands in /etc/rc.local. Why is this necessary, though?

    MarcoRosso wrote:The reason why it is happening is because it is timing out. Thats it for me. Since it says timeout after the status fail message. Unless i am wrong?
    This is unlikely because the OP stated that adding dhcpcd eth0 in /etc/rc.local works. If it was timing out that solution would not work. Unless if the OP modified /etc/conf.d/dhcpcd and set a very low timeout limit, I doubt that is the problem here.

    -mS
    I find that hard to believe. When you comment those lines out no gateway would be being set. You probably did not have ! before routes=(GATEWAY), which would then set an incorrect gateway, if you don't use 192.168.0.1.
    @OP
    /etc/rc.d/network should be calling dhcpcd to activate the networking on eth0. You haven't modified /etc/conf.d/wireless by some odd chance have you?

    You gave a totally correct answer. Unfortunately not relevant, though.
    Now take a look at that answer in context of the question. The question is "given that the environment is 3 tier, and given that the client to the database is an application server, how do we get the information about the client to the application server - one tier further out?"
    OP - this is a known problem with current application server configurations and applications. The only current way of providing that info is for the app server to capture and pass that info on. An easy way to pass it on, available to the app developer, is to use the DBMS_APPLICATION_INFO package.
    Perhaps one day the WebLogic Server folk will see fit to make that transparent. ;-)

  • VM Server got a new IP and hostname. How to update VM Manager?

    Test environment: VM Server 2.2.1 / VM Manager 2.2.0
    The VM Server has a number of virtual machines running in it. It is all on 1 physical machine with local disks.
    Our VM Server now got a new IP-address and hostname after physical move. How to get VM Manager pick up the modified VM Server again and pick up the Virtual Machines?
    Is this just a matter of 'Delete Server’ followed by ‘Add Server’ in the VM Manager or will I have to configure all Virtual Machines from scratch in that case?
    (Could I possibly update the OVS.OVS_SERVER table with the new IP-address and hostname?)
    Thanks for any help!
    Regards,
    Klaas.

    Hi Klaas,
    not quite that easily, because if you remove a server all information of the images will be deleted as well (just the information, not the images itself!).
    So
    => Delete Server
    => Change IP/Hostname
    => Add Server back (with the then new name)
    Then you have to import and discover all VMs again.
    So go to "Resources" => "Virtual Machine Images" => "Discover" ....
    PS: If you changed the hostname/IP already you can use cleanup.py to remove all registration information from the server (not the VMs.)
    Then you can register the server again.
    Changing the OVS schema table will probably be the easier way... but I don't know if this is supported.

  • Cloned Dac, Informatica and OBIEE want to change the ip and hostname

    Hi Gurus,
    I recently cloned my OBIEE env on virtual machines on OEL ( Linux)
    I want to change the hostname and ip address to make the services up with new IP and hostname.
    I started the Database(11gR2) single instnace successfully. Please let me know what all changes need to be done to start the dac(10.1.3.4), informatica(9.0.1 Hotfix 2) server and also OBIEE(11.1.1.7.1)
    I did run ./startServerprompt.sh for DAC but still the service cannot be started.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi kt1,
    Informatica and DAC is also on Linux servers. As a first step I'm trying to start the services on  DAC and Informatica servers but still no luck.
    When I'm Trying to start it gives me the following error in the log
    For Informatica:
    Domain service init method is called
    java.net.UnlnownHostException: santa.pti.local (which is the  wrong hostname)
    it should be picking up the new hostname panta.pti.local
    but I don't know where exactly is this information stored and how to get over it.
    The same case is with DAC server when I try to start it it's picking up the wrong hostname
    Anybody who can help me get through this. I have go ogled  it but so far I couldn't solve it.
    Appreciate if anyone could help me solve this.

    did you already change your ip and host?
    if not, do the following instructions:
    * verify your hostname
    - uname -a
    - cat /etc/nodename
    both should show your hostname
    * alter your hostname
    - uname -S newname
    * verify the hostname
    - uname -a
    - cat /etc/nodename
    both should show your newname
    * edit /etc/hostname.ce0 (type ce0 depends on your net device)
    - echo 'newname' > /etc/hostname.ce0
    * verify /etc/hostname.ce0
    - cat /etc/hostname.ce0
    should show your newname
    * edit the following files
    - /etc/net/ticlts/hosts
    - /etc/net/ticots/hosts
    - /etc/net/ticotsord/hosts
    replace old with new hostname
    * edit /etc/inet/hosts
    replace ip and hostname
    * you have to look for
    - /etc/inet/networks
    - /etc/inet/netmask
    fit yout data
    After doing all changes you have to reboot your system.
    Use ipconfig to verify network data

  • System name and hostname in Technical system

    while configuring Technical system in SLD of PI 7.0, it asks System name and hostname.
    can you differentiate them or what data we have feed them?

    Hi Gabriel,
      When defining the Technical system in the SLD you have to mention the name of the technical system which is to be given in the system name option and as the technical system is the physical system so you need to mention the host name which is to be provided in the hostname option. Generally we will give the domain name in the hostname parameter.

    Thank you for the reply.
    Informatica was running before I changed the ip and the hostname.
    After the changes informatica nor dac starts up. And I made all the changes where ever I could in the infa_home but no idea where its picking up the old hostname from.
    Its on Linux machine.
    What should I be doin? Can you give me step by step things to be changed to make the informatica service up and running.

  • Dhcpcd and KDE --leasetime?

    Sorry, I'm swedish and pretty tired after a long hard days of work to worry about grammar.
    Tried every suggestion at the WIKI, I've even tried adding arguments from dhcpcds manpages into the conf.d/dhcpcd file, and also dhcpcd.conf within /etc/ No matter what I do dhcpcd will always issue a lease every 1200 seconds. I'm pretty sure it does not need to get a new lease every 20 minutes for a static (set in the router "always use this IP for this device") LAN-IP adress.
    Any ideas where this setting is hiding? something by default or something within (KDE) Networkmanager I've missed? Because the amount of leases could be the cause for my connection dropping every so often during the night. I just wanna change leasetime to something like 86400 seconds. (24 hours)
    Thanks.

    Mannex wrote:Because the amount of leases could be the cause for my connection dropping every so often during the night.
    So, your real question is how to keep your connection from dropping every so often during the night.  I don't think it's a problem with dhcpcd.  Everyone else uses it without getting dropped.
    Is your WLAN dropping, or just your internet?  If it's your internet, then the problem might be your modem or ISP.  If it's your WLAN that's dropping, then it's your router.
    Never say everyone uses it without issues. Never say that, ever.
    It's that and that I also would like to keep KsystemLog a little more clean, dhcpcd so often is a little annoyance I have, 'specially while looking for other things.
    Changing it to 24 hours or even 12 hours is something I've tried to do the last 3 days now just to see if it really needs a 20 minute leasetime.
    And sure now using static IP also in rc.conf for eth0 the connection is stable as frag all the time. xD
    networkmanager>dhcpcd is overriding my arguments or refusing to use them, and I wonder why?

  • Dhcpcd changes hostnames: renders X unable to open ANY programs...

    At a random point after logging into my computer, dhcpcd (even after being disabled and stopped on login) kills and restarts my wifi. When this happens, X no longer allows me to open ANY GUI-based programs and I have to log out or reboot in order to correct the problem. I need a solid solution to this problem and disabling dhcpcd (plus blacklisting) seems to be the only idea I can come up with. NO on seems to be discussing this specific problem around the forums and narrowing it down to dhcpcd was a REAL pain via Google because it seems to affect people VERY randomly. I need a permenant solution because this issue makes it VERY difficult for me to get work done as I need to open and close programs fairly often on a daily basis. It has just about grinded my progress for today to a halt, which is why I'm here making this post now. ANY help on stablizing this issue will be GREATLY appreciated. It's really making my life difficult. Thanks in advance.

    I am using dynamic addresses. I use networkmanager. I either use E18 or Fluxbox for my desktop (has happened on both... and on multiple computers). I only use networkmanager to deal with my network connections. I have not ran wicd in quite some time (never on the machines in question) or any other software anytime recently. I'm never sure what all information I should give when I open up help requests on here... no matter what I provide, there's always something I will forget or not think of. SO feel free to ask more questions so I can narrow down the core cause of this issue. The research I have done on the symptoms I'm expriencing have lead me to believe that it's a hostname issue that comes when dhcpcd disconnects and reconnects me. The hostname is changed, which renders X unable to open any gui interfaces because it's trying to load them on a hostname that is no longer valid. I have not found any info explaining WHY dhcpcd does this, but all the symptoms fit. I will look for the links I found said information on and see if I can provide them sometime soon. Luckily, this is a random thing, and hasn't made work difficult for me so far today, so I need to catch up on things that didn't get finished yesterday. Thanks for all the help (current and future) with this issue.

  • Can I use ip address and hostname to establish Site 2 Site VPN?

    Is it possible to use both; hostname or ip address while trying to setup an ipsec tunnel?
    The scenario we have is that there is a customer who has one central site and 10 remote sites. Each site exists for a period of 3 to 6 months and then the staff moves to another location as a result the router/firewall and other IT resources are moved too. This requires me to setup and tear down tunnels from the head office as well as remote sites. To avoid this, i was thinking of using dynamic DNS which would save me a lot of work. Is it possible that I can setup VPN tunnels by either method i.e. hostname and ip address or do I have to stick with any one method only? As a reference the command used to identify peers is
    "isakmp identity {address | hostname}"
    The firewall version is 7.0(5)

    Hi,
    If you want to use IP addresses also then you could probably configure dynamic L2L VPN connections so that even if the IP address etc of the remote site changes, it is able to connect to the central site without making any change on the central device. For the remote sites that have the static public IPs, you can create static L2L VPN connections.
    HTH,

  • Can't login to Server app after hardware and hostname change

    I used Carbon Copy Cloner to completely clone a Mac mini Server onto another Mac mini Server. (The idea being that I can install and configure additional software just once and then easily set up identical servers by copying all hard drive contents.) This seemed to work great – the second Mac mini runs fine, including logins, networking etc.
    To avoid conflicts between the two servers, I changed the computer name in System Preferences/Sharing and ran:
    sudo scutil --set HostName someothername
    sudo changeip oldip newip
    The problem is that the Server app won't let me log in on the second Mac mini. It lists "This Mac" in the "Choose a Mac" dialog, but when I enter the correct username and password, login is refused (the login dialog is "shaken"). But the same login works for the operating system and SSH, and the account was definitely "allowed to administer this server". On the original Mac mini I cloned from, I can login with this account just fine.
    I even added the user account to the "Open Directory Administrators" group using ldapmodify on the command line, but that didn't help.
    Is it possible that there's something in the user directory that's bound to the hardware (maybe the Ethernet MAC address) or the hostname?
    Do you have any idea how I could fix this? I'm grateful for any help…

    this hasn't worked for me.
    When i follow the additional steps using terminal, the second command brings back the same outcome - 'David is not in the sudoers file. this incident will be reported'.
    I've been having trouble with login on for a week but didn't realise this was the problem. I've reset passwords, reinstalled OSX (twice) and now, bizarrely, i can log onto the mac mini as the administrator, but once logged in, the 'administrator' password doesnt work for anything. I can run Software Update because it comes up with a message:
    "Software Update wants to make changes. Type an administrator name and password to allow this".
    I then put in my password but it shakes and tells me its wrong.
    Can anyone advise any other solution? I'm kind of stuck - because the system doesn't recognise my admin password for updates, i cant update anything. And also because my itunes library was set up by a newwer version (I reinstalled OSX believing it would fix it reverting it back to a previous version) i can't listen to any music.
