  • Practical use of UML diagramming tool....

    Hi ,
    the use of UML diagramming tool is to present the system to end user (use cases) ... like the Entity Relationship Diagram in the Oracle Designer....
    However , i 'd like to ask if the product of this tool can be used as a base to produce something else afterwards in the whole system...
    I mean that in Oacle Designer , when the analyst designs the ER Diagram and saves it to the repository... this can be used to automatically generate the tables... in the repository also and then to the database...!!!!!
    Is there analogous using UML diagramming tool....?????
    Many thanks,
    Simon

    The UML class diagram can generate Java classes and ADF Business Components.
    The Database modeler in JDeveloper can generate the database objects.
    Also when you are designing the page flow diagram you are actually building the JSF or Struts flows.
    The hands-on-lab that you can find on the right side of this page:

    Shows off some of the model to code capabilities of JDeveloper:

  • Database Diagram Tool

    Anyone recommend a tool to produce pretty Database Diagrams?
    Ideally, something that can read our Orcacle 8i Database. i.e. if we add a column - it will automatically add to the diagram (so that the diagram and the database are in sync - I think this is called reverse engineer). Something free or cheap would be nice!

    You are in luck, it's been discussed fairly recently:

  • What to use For Developing a UML diagrams Tool??

    Hi!
    I am student of BS(Computer Sciences) and am doing my Final Year Project. I am implementing a research Thesis and my project involves developing an environment that would allow the Modeler/user to draw UML diagrams like Visual Paradigm, Rational Rose etc. I further(if i found time for that) would be writing a "Code Generation Engine" that will generate the Java code for the drawn UML diagrams. I am more than good at Java and am developing my project in Java.
    The thing about which i am confused is that how to develop an environment that would allow the drawing of UML diagrams. I was first considering to work on NetBeans Visual Library API but i found it too much Generic, i mean i had an overhead of managing the UML diagram details in terms of my "custom Widgets". Then some one told me about Eclipse Graph Editing Framework(GEF). But i am not quite sure about it. I wanted to ask that should i use NB Visual Library or Eclipse GEF or if there is any other Java Library allowing to draw UML diagram and possibly generating the XMI(a kind of XML standard) of the drawn UML diagrams for parsing it and generating Code.If some one knows a solution please answer!
    Any refernce would be appreciated!
    thanks,
    Hassan Ali.

    I am more than good at Java and am developing my project in Java.Perhaps you are good at the java LANGUAGE, but that is not what matters here; you need to be good at system architecture, design and implementation for which Java may be a tool to do part of the job. Why don't you pick something that does not take a team of skilled developers to create over a number of years (and even then the product is generally flawed)?
    Remember: papers are more important than the end product when you are in school. I did a project that was basically two web based systems (servlet/JSP/XML-RPC) to which a PDA device could connect to indicate medical problems. I made a few basic apps, one of which was a simple picture of a human on which you could point where it hurts. Depending on the zone that was pressed, the system would determine how alarming it was and if immediate action would need to be taken (the heart of course was red alert). One other such applications was a simple big red button that read PANIC.
    The design was pretty basic; web services for application communication, real time management interface to see incoming messages, very basic PDA applications for the end user part. But two things made our grade shoot to the stars.
    - one person who entered the project really late (and did no development at all) made an absolutely fantastic powerpoint presentation talking about the elderly and people with heart conditions and such and so forth (queue in pictures of elderly people and children with toothpaste smiles) and there were even truthful statistics thrown in there.
    - a last minute addition was that the systems were linked together; if one would fail (which would be the worst case scenario where the power would go out and the backup power supply would not last long enough), the other would take messages and forward them to the failed system as soon as it was up again so no calls would ever be completely lost, even if there would be some sort of a delay.
    That was it. The fact that everything worked was nice; the fact that we had a wonderful presentation, a big pile of documents and we managed to work in a backup system was what rocked the world.

    Not really. SSMS diagram tool is fast and excellent, the best integrated diagramming tool in the RDMBS industry.
    You are doing something wrong.
    First of all, do you have all PRIMARY KEYs, UNIQUE KEYs and FOREIGN KEYs defined? No tool is going to work without these keys.
    It took me 1 minute to create the following diagram:

  • Searching for a good relational database design tool

    Hi!
    I am designing an oracle database for our plant, and I want to use a entity-relationship diagram tool to create it.
    I want to design the data diagram with it, and generate creation code and run it to create the DB on our oracle server.
    I would appreciate that someone suggest good quality tools that can be used to do entity-relationship diagrams and implement the db not only on oracle, but to SQL server as well, as future designs for other projects may be implemented in SQL server.
    A small list of quality tools with their noteworthy features would be greatly appreciated.
    Best wishes to all!

    For Oracle database, Oracle Designer is the best.
    If you want to be able to use it for various databases you might think of:
    - ERwin
    - Embarcadero ER Studio
    - Sybase power designer

  • JDev Java class diagrams - how to associate 2 classes to parent via Map?

    I am using 9.0.5.1 and working on some simple Class diagrams. I have learnt how to use the @associates javadoc tag and association editor to get associations displayed between classes that use Collections. However, it seem that I cannot associate the classes used for the "key" and "value" in member Map. Only a single association per member variable appears to be supported. Is this possible?
    In case the above doesn't make sense, here is the code from the class with the Map member:
    * @associates <{score.ContentItem}>
    * @associates <{score.ScoreConsolidator}>
    protected Map descriptionMap = new HashMap();
    The diagram tool only seems to recognize the last @associates tag. I have tried a few syntaxes for refering to multiple classes to no avail.
    Thanks
    Drew

    Drew,
    Your correct, we do only support one associates tag. The associates tag indicates the collection type of the association, and only the first associates tag will be read.
    The best way to indicate that an association is indexed, or keyed, by a certain type is to draw a dependency between the association line and the key, or index, type.
    Thanks,
    Geoff

  • Importing Visio diagrams into Framemaker

    Hi all, I am considering using framemaker9 as my main documentation tool, and using visio2003 as my diagramming tool.
    As such, I will be importing the visio diagrams into framemaker by reference so that any mods to the visio diagrams will be automatically reflected in the framemaker document.
    The questions I have is:
    1. Which file format is the best to use for the importing? Should I save the visio diagrams in PDF or SVG format? I would prefer a format which provide the most resolution.
    2. When I have more than 1 page in a visio file, I noticed that there is no way for me to choose which page to be imported when importing in SVG format. However, with PDF, a dialog box would pop up to allow me to select which page in the visio file to be imported. Is this a bug in framemaker or have I missed some step in the process of importing SVG file?
    3. When importing some graphics/diagrams into an anchor frame, is there a way to make the imported graphics/diagrams automatically adjust its size to fit into the anchored frame area? If so, what are the steps?
    TIA
    BTW, I am just an engineer trying to document my work.

    framethrower,
    A PDF might be the most portable and reliable option for rendering; however, I find PDF generation to be a bit cumbersome when there are many images to deal with. I use Visio frequently and have had good success using the WMF format. All vector qualities of the original image are maintained and it looks OK on the screen. Naturally, it prints perfectly. I also like how the final image size automatically adjusts to the exact dimensions of the artwork, regardless of the original canvas size. Some caveats:
    - WMF is Windows only
    - Fonts are not embedded. If you distribute the image in any format besides a PDF, the target computer will need to have any fonts that you used.
    Otherwise, I'd suggest it as an option. I have a macro set up in Visio that saves a copy of an image as WMF, so I can refresh my WMF version with a click. I've pasted the basic macro text below. Note that this macro also saves a PNG version as well. It may be possible to adjust it to save a PDF version, I'm not sure. In any case, over the long haul, it saves much time over doing the manual Save As.

        path = Application.ActiveWindow.Document.FullName
        ' get the length of the path, to be used for truncation
        length = Len(path)
        ' change our filename to have a wmf extension
        newpath = Left(path, length - 4)
        newpath = newpath + ".wmf"
        ' save the wmf
        Application.ActiveWindow.Page.Export newpath
        ' do the same for png
        newpath = Left(path, length - 4)
        newpath = newpath + ".png"

  • Modelling techniques & tools

    Hi
    What methods, diagrams and tools do you use for designing and modelling a new application (which will be implemented in Apex)?
    I have used UML use cases with activity diagrams (used JDeveloper) mostly used for communication with end users and as a requirement spec.
    Then I jump directly to the database modell (also JDeveloper). But that's it. This is of course ok for small development projects.
    But for bigger projects I miss a link between the use cases and the data- (and object-) modell(s).
    Sequence- and communication diagrams seem only valid in pure OO design...(?) ... which isn't suitable using Apex(?).
    I think modelling is easier using object oriented design...
    What do you think?
    Any suggestions of methods, techniques and tools?
    thanks // Frederic

    Hi Frederic,
    I'm pretty old school, probably since I've been doing this for so long. All of those diagramming tools are pretty useless to me during the desing stage, and even after I have the app/schema built, all I do is create a simple ER diagram for the users to get an understanding of the structure and relationships.
    During the intial table layout, I start by sketching out the intial tables I think I'll need, then I start going through the fields I think I need and place them in the appropriate tables. I'll then throw all that in a spreadsheet and run it by the users, making a few changes or additions here and there, then run it by the users again after creating the ER diagram. I then build the app and demo that to the users and then go back and add anything else they've thought of, then update the ER diagram, tables, views, etc. and by then I'm usually pretty close to being done.
    I'm probably kind of unique though in that all of my 'projects' are custom projects (schemas and apps) built from scratch, and I'm the only computer person that knows anything about they are designed and built. I just deal with scientists that have an idea of what they want, but don't have the skills to actually get it done.
    My largest app though only has about 35 data tables and about 18 lookup tables, so things really aren't that complicated. If I can ever convince top level management that the current way of doing things is extremely time-consuming, error-prone and leads to eventual loss of usable corporate data though, these could easily be expanded to a couple hundred data tables to accomodate all of the types of data currently being lost each year, but I don't have much hope for top-level management ever doing anything (they hate to make decisions, especially if it involves money and/or manpower).

  • Software visualisation tool

    Hello!
    Until now my choice for visualising algorithms, structure etc has been pen&paper... time to go digital.
    I do own some apps like AI, VectorDesigner, xMind that would do the job and have googled up for some other free/shareware solutions.
    Wanted to hear Your experience (leaving OmniGraffle out ) in software visualisation. Freeware is moooore than welcome as the "going digital thing" is motivated by the need of sharing those drawings. It does not need to be a cross-platform solution.
    Btw, has anyone used online tools mentioned [here|http://stackoverflow.com/questions/86234/diagram-tool-for-mac-os-x/145876 8#1458768] for the matter?
    Many thanks in advance,

    Thank You for a response!
    However, honestly, I'm not willing to spend +Office Visio Standard 2007 $259.95, Office Visio Professional 2007 $559.95+. Do really $250 reflect the difference in using Visio compared to i.e. OpenOffice.org answer to it, namely [Draw|http://www.openoffice.org/product/draw.html]?

  • ER - Database related facilities in Database Diagrams (procedures/objects)?

    I am having a look at JDeveloper 11g Preview (11.1.1.0.0).
    Our environment is (still) very much a relational environment using Oracle Forms/Reports (and Designer for analysis/design, not generation).
    I am pleased to note, that materialized views can be "copied online" from a database, which was not possible in JDeveloper 10. But materialized views cannot be represented on a database diagram.
    The Database Diagram tool resembles the Server Model Diagram (SMD) tool in Designer, and it is fine when comparing the two tools. What I could have found useful in Designer, in the SMD tool or otherwise, is to be able to add database functions, procedures and packages to the database diagram.
    Also, representation of database types on the database diagram would be useful. This sort of "dropped out" in Designer :-}
    Taking this thought at step further, it would be useful to have a diagramming tool that could represent dependencies among database objects graphically.
    So, on the whole, a strengthening of the database related diagramming facilities would be appreciated.
    Regards
    Thomas Kirchhoff.

    Hi Thomas,
    Thanks for your feedback.
    In the next technology preview of 11g (TP3) you will be able to represent materialized views on the diagram.
    Unfortunately we cannot add functions, procedures and packages etc to the diagram.. But feedback from users like yourself is useful for future planning. When you talk of 'representation of database types' are you talking PL/SQL or the specific database (aag, XE...)
    What kinds of dependencies would you like to see? We have things like view usages and we are conscious of making diagrams 'too busy'. However, we do provide the diagram annotations: attachment, dependency, link and note for you to annotate your diagrams.

  • State Diagram Editor window never appears

    When I follow the directions in the State Diagram Toolkit.pdf manual(page 4) and drag and drop a state diagram tool onto an empty block diagram, the editor window never appears, only the block diagram code appears. I bet it's something really simple, but i'm baffled. Thanks for any suggestions.

    Ditto that!
    I go reaching for it any time I can not "see" the code I need.
    In LV 7.1 they changed the operation of the SDE such that only one SDE window can be open at a time. In LV 7.0 you could have more than one open at a time.

  • Is it possible to import a gradient made in Photoshop to Illustrator?

    Hi,
    I made a complex gradient showing all spectral colors in Photoshop. Now I would like to have exactly this gradient in my Illustrator's gradient-palette. Is this possible somehow? At least it is not possible to load the Photoshop-.grd-file into Illustrator. Does anyone have an idea how to do it?
    Best regards
    Stefan
    P.S. Of course I know that I can insert the Photoshop-gradient as a picture into any Illustrator document and that is exactly what I intended to do and actually do with it right now. But I also want to use it in conjunction with Illustrators diagram tool, which does not allow to fill the space below a graph with a picture, but which allows to fill this space with Illustrators own gradients. Thus it would be great if there was a way to transfer the Photoshop gradient to Illustrator and not having to start from scratch there again.
    Meanwhile I have to copy the graph out of the diagram, putting it on a dedicated layer and there make a clipping mask together with the afore inserted Photoshop-pixel-gradient. This is not very elegant, when you must do this several times...
    P.P.S. Forgot to mention that I'm talking about CS 5.5

    No. Gradients are not directly transferable. Colors are, but not gradients.

  • Pls help.. Issue with plug in installation

    I am facing some issues in installing pulgins with flex
    builder3 through updater.
    Actually i am trying to install updates from flex builder for
    UML diagramming tools.
    After installing all the required packages, still the feature
    is not visible in the IDE.
    When i tried to see the problem. i noticed that the installed
    plugins are in disabled state. i cudnt see the option to enable.
    so anybody pls help me in that..
    Packeages i have added are: MDT, JDT, EMF, GMF, GEF

    I set up a new admin user account, logged in, but the problem persists.
    I take this to mean that you still can't mount any downloads. What you're saying is that you can't mount any .dmg file by double-clicking on it. Is that correct? If so, see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75098 and http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692 for potential fixes. One other thing to try is reinstall the 10.4.3 Combo update before trying to reinstall Safari or the entire OS.

  • Visio like object drawing in Java - newbie question

    Hi all,
    Although a reasonably experienced java programmer I am new to the world of 2D graphics.
    I am contemplating writing a tool which includes a diagramming capability for displaying computer systems and interactions between them.
    I guess this would not be a million miles from what a UML diagramming tool does, but it would definitely have some differences.
    So, for example, in this tool a user would be able to:
    Define a computer system and allocate an icon for it.
    Drag that system icon onto a diagram.
    Draw lines between systems and to represent interactions and define what those interactions were.
    Does anyone know if there are any Java API's or tools out there which could get me started?
    Thanks in advance, Robin.

    wpafbuser1 wrote:

He can Google for that anyway.He's not new to java as he has stated that he is a "reasonably experienced java programmer". He also knows that he will probably need Java2D else he wouldn't be in this forum. If he is reasonably experienced, there's no doubt that he knows about Swing and how it can be used to create GUIs.
    To the OP, you could try to roll your own Visio like flowcharting program through Java2D and Swing, but you will probably get up and running faster if you use tools already created for this purpose. One such is JGraph ^1^. There are probably others as well.
