Did 10.7.1 kill my DVI?

Hey folks. I use a 2.66ghz dual core i7 mbp, 15", 1680x1050 res screen. I use the minidp to dvi plug to connect to my samsung syncmaster 2333sw I was doing up some rearranging of my desk, and I needed to temporarily unplug the adaptor from my laptop. Once I plugged it back in, my laptop screen just froze (didn't go throu e normal blue screen where it usually goes to if I just plugged in a display/projector)
I bring my laptop to college and when I plug it back in every night there has never been any issues.
I unplugged it, but my screen stayed frozen. Even my mouse cursor couldn't move. I restarted and now I tried with my miniDP to VGA adaptor, hooking up to the monitor through vga. Image is bad as per VGA standard, but works as advertised. I tried plugging it through dvi again. Again my system locked up and didn't respond to inputs.
I force shut down again by holding the power button and plugged in the vga adaptor only. The blue screen appeared before it settled back to normal. I unplugged it, and ditto. I tried the dvi adaptor only, and absolutely nothing happened.
I thought this had to be the issue, and I bought a new adaptor. It still doesn't work.
What has gone wrong? Does anyone know? Can anyone help? I'm on 10.7.1 if that matters.

Have you tried Safari > "Reset Safari ..."? My Safari wasn't in as bad shape, but it got slower and sometimes the Close button on the Tabs won't appear when moused over, it started to get irritating, but after Reset, its like new. Hope yours can be solved just as easily, good luck.

  • Hello, did an Itunes Update kill my Computer?

Hello, since yesterday I'm owning a new Ipod Shuffle and I like it. For the Ipod shuffle it was necessary to update my Itunes, which I've been always denying. Now the computer runs very slow and even Skype and Mail OS don't open at all anymore. It's pretty annoying -- please help me.
    Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Well it is possible that's why it wants to update iTunes. There may be a bug in the iTunes version you have installed that slows your machine if you connect the new iPod shuffle. Regardless, my advice:
    1. Dismount and disconnect the iPod.
    2. Determine if the slowness exists without the iPod.
    - a. If it does not exist without the iPod, perhaps your USB cable is faulty, or the iPod is faulty. Try a different cable, also try connecting it via a different USB port, and try connecting only Apple devices via USB. If none of the above works to stave off the slowness, the iPod is likely the culprit, and you should use the store return period to get a replacement iPod.
    - b. If the slowness exists without the iPod, see if you installed anything along with the iPod, if you can remove it. First see if the disk is too full*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/diskfull.html
Or if permissions or the directory are damaged*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
If neither appears to be the case, see my user tip about downgrading:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1308817&tstart=0
The same holds true for uninstalling system level software, assuming you did install something new with the iPod.
If you didn't install anything new with the iPod, it may be time, to consider upgrading to the latest iTunes, keeping my FAQ* in mind about backing up first:

  • Did 10.4.9 kill the APC USB recognition?

Strange thing happened. I have a APC Smart UPS 1000 XL. The cool thing is that, it is connected via USB to my server. It is automatically recognised by Energy Saver and one can modify the settings - until 10.4.9.
Although the UPS shows up in System Profiler, I have to disconnect and reconnect the USB cable so that it is recognised in System Preferences.
Has anyone had similar experiences? How have they solved it?

Although the UPS shows up in System Profiler, I have
to disconnect and reconnect the USB cable so that it

We have seen the same behavior on our Xserve G5 with our APC SmartUPS 750 Rack Mount 1U since 10.4.2 Server, persists through 10.4.8 Server (haven't done the 10.4.9 update yet). We've also got the APC 9618 network management card. Have also seen this behavior on our iMacs 10.4.2 through 10.4.9 (non-server) with their APC BackUPS ES 500 UPS devices.
Has anyone had similar experiences? How have they
    solved it?
disconnect and reconnect the USB cable, just as you do.

  • Did iTunes 7.0 kill the iPod?

At the prompting of iTunes, I upgraded to 7.0 (tried 7.0.2 also). iTunes no longer recognizes my son's iPod but it still shows up in My Computer. I have tried Apples Support Page-restarted the ipod service, removed iTunes & reinstalled it, emptied the Temp Directory. We plugged in a friend's iPod, and iTunes recognizes it. This evening, I uninstalled the new iTunes & Quicktime and downloaded the 6.0.5 version. All his music is in the iTunes library but it still will not recognize the iPod. Where do I go from here?

it might also be worth checking to see if you're getting a fast user switching issue:

  • Mini DVI-Adapter Not Working

Today I went to the Apple Store and got myself one of those fancy new Mini-DVI to DVI adapters, hoping it would work with my screen at home, which I had previously running on the Mini Displayport to VGA Adapter on my original MacBook.
Strangely, when I plugged the cable into the adapter, and into my computer, nothing happened. I did not get video on the screen, nor did my MacBook detect it. I have tried re-plugging the Mini-DVI adapter and clicking Detect Displays in the Displays Preferences multiple times, but no luck.
I have seen the screen work with DVI about a year ago, but that was on one of the original MacBook Pros. Am I better off returning this DVI adapter and instead buying a Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter?
Thanks for any help in resolving this problem.

I have a 22 inch ViewSonic that I got from a friend about a year ago. I did indeed plug the monitor directly into the adapter.
I brought my computer, adapter and cable all into the Apple Store, and they said it was all OK, but did replace my DVI adapter thinking it was probably defective. I got home, tested it on my monitor, but still not working. I tested it on a newer HP monitor that's on the family computer, and oddly it worked there.
A bit of research revealed that the adapter did not send Analog signals on DVI anymore, which confuses me, since the MacBook actually does have Analog signals on that port. I brought my DVI adapter in original packaging in to the Apple store again, and they replaced it with a VGA adapter for free, and sure enough, that solved the problem for me.
Lesson Learned - don't use DVI with older monitors, stay with VGA.

  • Problem trying to connect mini-dp dvi to HDTV

Hi, i just came home all happy from buying a mini displayport to dvi, had all the cables set but it seems its not working... I dont know if i have to do something but as of now can´t see anything in the tv.
I´m using the mini displayport to dvi and a cable that is dvi-d single link to hdmi.
Might the cable be the problem? do i have to press a button in the mac? i´m totally lost here.
    Thanks!

I know certain devices require an HDMI connection to work. Part of the implementation of HDMI was to try and curtail pirating by digital copying, so many devices look for a "handshake" in order to function.
I have personally just purchased a new MBP, so I don't have personal experience with what you are trying to do yet, but I did get a Mini Displayport to DVI adapter and we have a DVI to HDMI cable at our church. If I have time I'll try it out to see if it works or not and let you know.
I do know that my Mini Displayport to HDMI adapter I just received this afternoon from monoprice.com DOES work on my Panasonic plasma TV. For $10 it might be worth getting instead of wasting time troubleshooting what you have.

  • GT120 DVI- HDMI not showing native resolution

I'm having issues getting my new Quad 2.66 Mac Pro with the stock GT 120 card to work with my LG L246WP HDMI display. I'm using a DVI->HDMI adapter (same I used with an older iMac without issue) and now it only shows HDTV supported resolutions. I had to use a 3rd party piece of software to force it to see 1920x1200.
Also, now windows in bootcamp won't work either using the DVI->HDMI but works with DVI->VGA! What I don't understand is that my older iMac with a ATI 2600 chip ran extended desktop and bootcamp flawlessly but with this new hardware it has been one giant headache.
Does anyone have a solution for this?

I just spent the morning on the phone with tech support after hooking up my new Mac Pro to my HP w2408h monitor and finding the same problem everyone else has - maximum resolution of 1900x1080. The tech had me roll the OSX version back to 10.5.6, but it did not help. Using the dvi to hdmi connection on my Mac Book Pro gives me the proper resolution of 1920 x 1200, but no matter what the tech had me do, I could not get the proper resolution on the new Mac Pro. He did not think it was the hdmi to dvi connection, but I am almost sure, especially after reading the posts here, that the problem does lie with the hdmi (actually with the GT 120 video card). I do not expect a quick resolution from Apple to this problem.

  • Process that cannot be "killed"

    Hi,
There is a process, "PocketCloudService" that I cannot finish even from terminal (kill PID), the response is "Operation not permitted". I did the same of killing proceses from terminal and it worked, but it doesn't with this process. It belonged to a program that I unistalled, "Pocket Cloud". I reinstalled that program and unistalled again, but the process continues running, even if I restart the mac. It's annoying because sometimes it spends about 80% CPU, warming my mac (and my patience!), therefore I finish the process "PocketCloudService" from Activity Monitor, but it restarts few seconds after. I just want to delete or block the source that launches that process and not have to stop it manually anymore. Any help will be appreciated!
More details: From activity monitor when I check the process, the main process is "launchd (1)", user: root (0)

Look in either the LaunchAgents or LaunchDaemons folders in both Library folders. It needs to be deleted in order to stop the process permanently (a reboot will be required.)
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead.  Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
    AppZapper
    Automaton
    Hazel
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Kill -9 an oracle OS process

I did an alter system kill session on two oracle SIDs. They have been flagged as "KILLED" in v$session for 15 hours.
The only waits I have are marked as "Other". I can't figure out what the problem is. There is not enough granularity. This is a RAC database.
The two SIDS I killed are oracle scheduler jobs.
is there a risk if I kill -9 the OS processes associated with the SIDs?

what sort of job is it?

  • 10.6.4 Update removed 'Internal Speakers' now only 'Digital Output'

I have recently purchased the latest iteration of the MacBook Pros. Up until today, I had been running 10.6.3 and decided to jump forward and update to 10.6.4.
The update seems to have since killed audio output from the internal speakers. If I go to 'System Preferences' -> 'Sound' -> 'Output', I now have a view of "Digital Out" instead of "Internal Speakers". This does mean that the audio is no longer functional. The audio levels CANNOT be adjusted from within preferences, via the key combination, or the menu bar - all the controls are disabled.
If I plugin headphones, audio plays through the headphones as expected, but when I pull them out...nothing.
I'm wondering if it has something to do with the Mini DisplayPort? During the update, I did have a Mini DisplayPort to DVI converter plugged into the machine.
Any tips/suggestions/support would be much appreciated...

    This worked for me:
    http://josephhall.org/nqb2/index.php/2010/05/24/stuckonmute
    1.Plug your headphones back in.
2.Play a bit of sound through them (e.g., a song), then stop the sound.
    3.Make sure Preferences is quit.
4.Launch Preferences and open the Sound pane.
5.While the Sound pane is open and set to Headphones, pull out the headphone plug from the jack.
6.It will reset itself to "Internal Speakers" and you are good to go.

  • New Pioneer DVD drive not recognized in profiler

I have used these forums many times to solve my problems so a big thanks to everyone who contributes. I've never had to actually ask a specific questions until now so here goes....
I have an e-mac running 10.3.9. My superdrive started to get flakey (not recognizing some DVD's, spitting them out, etc.). I followed all the advice here but no luck so I finally replaced the original drive with a Pioneer DVR-118. My problems still exist and the system profiler is telling me I have a Pioneer DVR-106. Did I do something wrong on the install? Shouldn't the profiler recognize the new drive?
A big thank you to anyone who can help me through this.

Since your computer's Apple Hardware Test is on a disc and the built-in optical
drive won't work, you may have to see if an external optical drive capable of
being used as a boot, is available. This of course would be a FireWire combo
type drive that can read & write DVD & CD media and boot Macs.
You may have to see if you can archive anything worth saving from that eMac
and put it on media via another computer; if the eMac can be booted into
Target Disk Mode where it is seen by another computer as a FireWire drive.
In fact, you could see (in a reverse scenario, perhaps?) if another computer's
optical drive could be used by your eMac, if a second healthy computer is
available & then boot it into FireWire Target Disk Mode to see if you can use
the optical drive in there as though it were a peripheral. - This may not work.
I've not had to really use FireWire Target Disk Mode, but do have cables,
and an externally enclosed LaCie FW HDD which is partitioned for clones.
There are times where a FireWire externally enclosed superdrive is handy.
There may be some damage on the logic board or some circuit that does the
controlling of ATA devices on one of the buses in the computer. That would
be a possible cause of the issue. If the identity of this drive can be changed
by the user before it is installed, be sure that is set correctly for use in eMacs.
{The three eMacs I've owned, had issues early on and I got rid of them in mere
days of first purchase; at considerable distance and effort by me. Then I got
an iMac which was an unholy terror to debug after an 'authorized service' ctr
did their best to kill logic boards and sell me defective store-brand RAM they
were authorized to install in a place I was not. ThreeThousand Miles and Six
Months later, I finally got my iMac back, repaired. Only because Apple told
    them to read my test notes - & just install the parts I said it originally needed.}
Do you have a second Mac nearby (presuming yes, and using it online) which
may be used to attempta further diagnostic or testing of the eMac?
Not sure if an Apple Hardware Test would be sufficient to tell the issues in
your computer; if you have a way to make use of it via external FW. Hope-
fully someone with more extensive eMac and drive experience will advise.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Connecting Mac Mini to Sharp LCD 45" TV

I just purchased a MINI for Xmas 09'. I have tried to connect it to my 45" tv via: DVI and S-Video connections, both have been un-successful! The only time the Mini shows a display is if I connect to a 17" computer monitor.....
I purchased the Mivi- Dvi to Video Adapter/ Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter/
Mini-DVI to S-Video Adapter and not 1 works with TV. The only time it shows display is when I connect using the Mini-DVI to VGA adapter and connect to my 17" computer monitor.........
IS there something I'm connecting wrong? Does the MINI even connect to a 45" TV?
    HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP! Its driving me NUTZ!
My TV is a SHARP LC-45GD7U. It has "S" Video inputs, DVI-I (29Pin) Inputs.
It also has HDMI but it is being used via CABLE TV!
    Any info would HELP! THANKS!

Hi- sorry to hear you are having problems.
Did you try using the mini-dvi to dvi adaptor that was included for free in your mac mini box? Give that a try, but that being said, the mini display port to DVI adaptor should have worked.
Just a note- the S-video adaptor will NOT work with the new 2009 minis. At all. You should bring that back to the store and return it.
Also, can you give us the following details:
    1. Model of your Panasonic set.
    2. Exactly what do you see on your screen when you try to connect? Black screen? Blue screen? Garbled screen? Screen with huge or blurry text? Please be as specific as possible.

  • ITunes 10.2.2 no longer organizing library

I have been adding video content to iTunes, and it was working normally. I've got "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to" checked, and when I add the files, they moved into the iTunes Media folder. When I renamed them or otherwise changed them, the files were updated.
I then upgraded to 10.2.2.12 after being prompted to do so. I have rebooted the computer a few times since just to make sure it's clear. (Win XP SP2, btw)
I continued to add video content, but just noticed that although the files are being copied into the iTunes Media folder, they are then not changing when I edit any information about them. When I change the name in iTunes, the filename doesn't change. When I change the video type from Movie to TV Show, it doesn't move the file from the "Movies" folder to the "TV Shows" folder.
Even weirder, when I do try to change the type from "Movies" to "TV Shows" for example, or change the name of the TV show, it creates the folder in the new location with the proper new name/location, but then doesn't actually move the file! Just creates an empty folder.
I have tried clicking on the file and saying "Consolidate Files..." and it does nothing. Both boxes for organizing/copying are checked.
Everything else seems to be working properly, but this is quite frustrating. Any thoughts? Can anyone else reproduce this problem on this version, or is it just me?
    Thank you.

The process of downgrading is pretty simple. May I remind you, this is for Windows. I have not tried this on a Mac.
The thing I did was first to kill all the Apple processes running, iTunesHelper, iPodService, AppleMobileDeviceHelper. I'm not sure if you have to do this but I did it anyway so that the installation wouldn't ask me to reboot in order to replace files. After that I just deleted the iTunes folder in Program Files folder, or on my Windows 7 64-bit, the Program Files (x86). After that I lauched the controll panel and uninstalled iTunes. And now, you are free to install your older version. It might be a good idea to backup your iTunes files anyway like iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Music Library.xml, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, iTunes Library Extras.itdb. I dont know for sure about the last two files but I always copy them anyway. And now it's just to install iTunes 10.2.0. However. If you are downgrading to lets say iTunes 9, I'm not sure if you can use your existing iTunes Library.itland  iTunes Music Library.xml files with that version of iTunes. Maybe some one else knows.
This process of downgeading worked for me, twice and I haven't notices any problem with syncing or anything but of course I don't want to be blamed for messing up someones iTunes

  • HP Pavilion P7-1439 Desktop no longer displaying

I bought a refurbished HP Pavilion P7-1439 Desktop 2 months ago and all was working perfectly fine until today.
I was using it this afternoon before work, and left it on assuming it would go to sleep naturally.
When I came back to it this night the computer would wake out of sleep mode, but the monitor wouldn't. After rebooting the computer there was no change. I switched out the DVI cable for a VGA and the monitor was still not getting a signal.
To make sure it wasn't the monitor, I plugged my monitor into my laptop and it worked perfectly fine (the VGA did, I don't have a DVI port on my laptop).
I have tried unplugging everything while off and replugging them in to no avail. I don't know what else I can do if I can't get the computer to display anything.
What could be the issue here? It seems like a hardware malfunction, but I don't know what could have happened in the 5 hours between uses.

    Hello,
Your PC has an integrated video card so it might be a hardware problem yes.
Before we can say that 100%, try to do the following, remove the power cord from the unit and remove the side panel. Then look for the memory modules and remove them and insert them back on their slots. Take out the CMOS battery as well leave it out, then keep the power button pressed for 30 seconds.
Then, reconnect the external power cord and leave the CMOS out, and power on the display without the VGA cable. Then, connect it after 1 minute and see if you have display. If not, then shutdown the unit and start it up again and see what happens. If no display after this, probably its a hardware issue and you will need to have the system board replaced.
If the issue persisted, try to see if you can arrange a PCIe video card, just to test the unit and see if you have video. You can try to do one more thing, just change the memory modules from their slots to the other empty ones ok?
Let me know the outcome of this tests.
    Thanks,
I work for HP! Please remember to provide and if this helped click ON
