Difference between a static class and singleton

What is the difference between a static object and a singleton ?
for example:
1 )
public class MyObject {
static MyObject singleton ;
public static MyObject getInstance() {
if (singleton ==null) singleton = new MyObject ();
return singleton;
private MyObject () {
supe();
public void myMethod() {
2 )
public class MyObject {
private MyObject () {
supe();
public static void myMethod() {
If I need to call the myMethod() , witch of this solution is better ?
// case 1
MyObject.getInstance().myMethod()
// case 2
MyObject.myMethod()
.....

This has been discussed a lot here.
Use the forum's search feature, or, since it's not necessarily reliable, use google.
For many intents and purposes, they're equivalent.
However, with a singleton you can implement an interface, and get polymorphic behavior. You can't do with with a class full of static methods (which, by the way, is NOT a static class).

  • Difference between static class and singleton?

    Hi I wonder what could be the difference between static methods and singleton?
    In singleton at any point of time there will be only one object existing in the JVM. We create singleton to avoid multiple object creation for that class.
    If I make all the methods in the class as static also it does the same job. The memory will be allocated once. Even there wont be any object in this case, so time required for object creation also can be saved. looks like more efficient but still why need singleton?

  • Difference between calling static method and not static method?

    Hi,
    Suppose i want to write a util method, and many class might call this method. what is better? writing the method as static method or not static method. what is the difference. what is the advantace in what case?

    writing the method as static method or not static
    method. what is the difference.The difference is the one between static and non-static. Any tutorial or the JLs will clarify the difference, no need to repeat it here.
    what is the advantace in what case?It's usually not like you have much of a choice. If you need access to an instance's attributes, you can't make it static. Otherwise, make it static.

  • Difference b/w Java Class and Bean class

    Many thanks Kim
    Hi
    Luckily in the java world the definition of components is a little
    less severe than when using COM (I also have, and still occasionaly
    do, worked in the COM world)
    Firstly there are two definitions that need to be clarified and
    separated: JavaBean and EnterpriseJavaBean (EJB)
    EJB are the high end, enterprise level, support for distributed
    component architectures. They are roughly equivalent to the use of MTS
    components in the COM/ COM+ world. They can only run within an EJB
    server and provide support, via the server, for functionality such as
    object pooling, scalability, security, transactions etc. In order to
    hook into this ability EJB have sets of interfaces that they are
    required to support
    JavaBeans are standard Java Classes that follow a set of rules:
    a) Hava a public, no argument constructor
    b) follow a naming patterns such that all accessor and modifier
    functions begin with set/ get or is, e.g.
    public void setAge( int x)
    public int getAge()
    The system can then use a mechanism known as 'reflection/
    introspection' to determine the properties of a JavaBean, literally
    interacting with the class file to find its method and constructor
    signatures, in the example above the JavaBean would end with a single
    property named 'age' and of type 'int' The system simply drops the
    'set' 'get' or 'is' prefix, switches the first letter to lower case
    and deduces the property type via the method definition.
    Event support is handled in a similar manner, the system looks for
    methods similar to
    addFredListener(...)
    addXXXListener
    means the JavaBean supports Fred and XXX events, this information is
    particularly useful for Visual builder tools
    In addition there is the abiliity to define a "BeanInfo' class that
    explicitly defines the above information giving the capability to hide
    methods, change names etc. this can also be used in the case where you
    cannot, for one reason or another, use the naming patterns.
    Finally the JavaBean can optionally - though usually does - support
    the Serializable interface to allow persistence of state.
    As well as standard application programming, JavaBeans are regularly
    used in the interaction between Servlets and JSP giving the java
    developer the ability to ceate ojbect using standard java whilst the
    JSP developer can potentially use JSP markup tags to interact in a
    more property based mechanism. EJB are heaviliy used in Enterprise
    application to allow the robust distribution of process
    HTH.

  • Difference between a java program and a java class

    Hi there,
    What is the difference between a java program and a java class?

    HI,
    A java class is an object - described in a .class file - which has been given properties and behaviours and which can be instantiated in a program.
    A java program( application ) consists of at least one class (one of which must be declared public) and which executes its main() method ( of the public class ) when it is started.
    Every program is a class but not every class is a program.
    Examples:
    A java program
    // this simple program will print out the first command line argument you put
    // in after calling : java ScreenWriter "arguments"
    class ScreenWriter
    public static void main( String [] args )
    if( args.length > 0 )
    System.out.println( args[0] );
    A java class
    //the Math class is already defined in the java.lang package
    //and contains a constant for PI
    //So I can include the Math class with the PI constant in my simple program
    //and now I have a program that involves my ScreenWriter class and the Math class too.
    class ScreenWriter
    public static void main( String [] args )
    if( args.length > 0 )
    System.out.println( args[0] );
    System.out.println( "The value of Pi is: " + Math.PI );
    When you see package and import declarations at the start of a program they are there to ensure the compiler knows which classes are used in the program.
    Hope that helps,
    Terry

  • What is the Difference between ?  new Operator and Class.forName() ???

    plz tel me ....
    what is the Difference between ? new Operator and Class.forName() ??? ........

    Class.forName(), takes the class name as parameter,
    and loads that class in memory. But it doesn't create
    any instance of that class.
    That means static methods/variables are available for
    use.
    new keyword, checks if the class is loaded, if not
    then loads that class, and then creates an instance
    of that class.Class.forName actually returns the class object for that name (class - for -name). it might load it, if the class hasn't already been loaded, but it's misleading to say that's what that method does
    your definition of 'new' is wrong, too. give the dukes back

  • What's the difference between a web site and a web application?

    I'm stumped trying to come up to a difference between a web site and a web application for myself. As I see it, a web site points to a specific page and a web application is more of some sort of 'portal' to content and information.
    But where I'm stuck is that a web application is still viewed through a browser (is it not?) and a web site can still view content dynamically, making the line between web site and application prety gray.
    For instance, does a web site using ASP.NET or AJAX (I assume ASP.NET is AJAX's proprietary sibling, if not, ignore ASP.NET AND concentrate on the AJAX), becomes a web application because it can retrieve data dynamically and asynchronously or would a website
    using PHP and a CMS be more of a web application because it forms the pages on request, based on the request of the client and its content in its databse?
    Or maybe I'm totally wrong here - what differenciates between a web application and a website?

    This is totally personal and subjective, but I'd say that a website is defined by its content, while a webapplication is
    defined by its interaction with the user. That is, a website can plausibly consist of a static content repository that's dealt out to all visitors, while a web application depends on interaction and requires programmatic user input and data processing.
    For example, a news site would be a "website", but a spreadsheet or a collaborative calendar would be web "applications". The news site shows essentially the same information to all visitors, while the calendar processes individual data.
    Practically, most websites with quickly changing content will also rely on a sophisticated programmatic (and/or database) backend, but at least in principle they're only defined by their output. The web application on the other hand is essentially a program that
    runs remotely, and it depends fundamentally on a processing and a data storage backend.

    There is no real "difference". Web site is a more anachronistic term that exists from the early days of
    the internet where the notion of a dynamic application that can respond to user input was much more limited and much less common. Commercial websites started out largely as interactive brochures (with the notable exception of hotel/airline reservation sites).
    Over time their functionality (and the supporting technologies) became more and more responsive and the line between an application that you install on your computer and one that exists in the cloud became more and more blurred.
    If you're just looking to express yourself clearly when speaking about what you're building, I would continue to describe something that is an interactive brochure or business card as a "web site" and something that actually *does something that feels
    more like an application as a web app.
    The most basic distinction would be if a website has a supporting database that stores user data and modifies what the user sees based on some user specified criteria, then it's probably an app of some sort (although I would be reluctant to describe Amazon.com
    as a web app, even though it has a lot of very user-specific functionality). If, on the other hand, it is mostly static .html files that link to one another, I would call that a web site.
    Most often, these days, a web app will have a large portion of its functionality written in something that runs on the client (doing much of the processing in either javascript or actionscript, depending on how its implemented) and reaches back through some
    http process to the server for supporting data. The user doesn't move from page to page as much and experiences whatever they're going to experience on a single "page" that creates the app experience for them.

  • Difference between ECC 6.0 and earlier versions

    Hi,
    one of the difference between ECC 6.0 and earlier versions is that instead 'WS_UPLOAD'  and 'WS_DOWNLOAD' in ECC we should use 'GUI_UPLOAD' and 'GUI_DOWNLOAD'  respectively.
    (of course SPDD and SPRO tcodes is known by everone i suppose)
    Similarly can u all put down some differences here, atleast one entry by each, I think we can make a good docu. I have searched the net for the differences but could not get much, so by each of us contributing one each, it would become good docu..for all of us.

    The Abstract Portal Component class offers a lean method for writing HTML commands to the Web client as well as for basic event handling. It is an implementation of the IPortalComponent, which is the central abstraction of the Portal Component API.
    DynPage
    The Page Processor Component, which extends the Abstract Portal Component, returns a DynPage. It provides more sophisticated event handling. Controls that produce events (such as buttons and checkboxes) have an event attribute that contains the name of the event handling method. This event handling method is invoked by the DynPage when it occurs.
    The JSPDynPage is an implementation of the DynPage and allows the use of the DynPage in combination with JSP (Java Server Pages).
    The PDK documentation and examples focus on the DynPage. Easier event handling and the separatation of content development (JSP) from application development (Java) make the DynPage a better choice for components with interaction and changing content.

  • Static class and clustering

              I have a static class that I use to cache some values during a batch process. The
              batch process uses a JMS queue to parcel our identical units of work to MDBs.
              I want this to scale using a cluster with the same MDBs on multiple machines.
              Everything works fine except that I can't figure out how to tell my cache to clear
              itself out on every node between batch runs. Is there a pattern or solution to
              this problem?
              What I've tried is to create a stateless session bean method that clears my cache.
              At the begining of my batch job, (which is a stateless session bean call) I call
              this method on each server in the cluster by getting the remote interface for
              the stateless bean via the different URLs of the servers. However, the session
              bean method always executes on the one server where I make the call. It's as if
              WebLogic gives me back a local interface instead of the remote interface that
              I asked for.
              Any ideas would be appreciated.

    ... static class and static method.I have never heard of a thing called "static class". Perhaps you mean a class with only static members?
    My design approach (which is bound to needs of the moment and seldom to library-development or future re-use, since both is harder than most developers realize) is to develop straight without caring too much about static or not. When a method is done, debugged and works well, it happens that other objects access this method as well.
    It may happen that I just want to use this single method and almost nothing else of the object. If that is the case, I can start looking if it's a Good Thing(tm) to make the method static, so no object creation is needed just for the one method. Sometimes it can be done, sometimes not.
    But that's just me and you'll find quite a lot of coders that'll advice you to decide what's static and what not before you start coding. And that's as good an advice as most others you can get.
    In the end it's your decision, so start fiddling around and see what fits best for you.

    CAn annyone xplain Difference between fully qualified name and Canonical name

    If you dont know then don't replyYou were given a link directly to the answer. The state of my knowledge is therefore (a) irrelevant and (b) not proven by anything in this thread.
    Who asked [you] to reply
    You* did, when you posted here.
    I know how to get from java language specificationClearly not, or you wouldn't still be posting here.
    I need clarification for what is in java lang specification..It seems clear enough to me. What part of "A member class or member interface M declared in another class C has a canonical name if and only if C has a canonical name. In that case, the canonical name of M consists of the canonical name of C, followed by ".", followed by the simple name of M." didn't you understand?

  • What is the difference between System.out.println() and System.out.print()?

    Hi everyone,
    I am only a new comer and know very little about Java. I will appreciate a lot if anyone teaches me what the difference between two method println and print is? Thank you so much.

    The PrintStream class defines a number of print() methods that ... print
    things. System.out is a commonly used PrintStream.
    The difference between the print(...) and println(...) methods is that the
    second one prints a new line at the end. What it actually prints varies
    from system to system: sometimes it will output a '\n' sometimes not.
    There is a system property called line.separator that determines
    how a new line is output.

  • What is difference between tha master data and tranction data

    Hi, Gurus
    this is  sudhakar
    i want to no what is the difference between the transaction data and master data  give with examples .
    Thanks
    sudhakar

    Hi,
    The most important data classes are master data, transaction data, organizational data and system
    data.
    Master data is data that is rarely modified. An example of master data is the data of an address file, for
    example the name, address and telephone number.
    Transaction data is data that is frequently modified. An example is the material stock of a warehouse,
    which can change after each purchase order.
    Organizational data is data that is defined during customizing when the system is installed and that is
    rarely modified thereafter. The country keys are an example.
    System data is data that the R/3 System itself needs. The program sources are an example
