Difference between .equals("") and .equals(null)

Can any one please tell me the difference between the following?
String someString;
someString = someMethod(someParameter);
After the method call, if I am going for a check like this..
what will each check do?
1. if (someThing.equals(null))
2. if (someThing.equals(""))
3. if (something == null )
4. if (something == "" )

First, understand that the empty string ("") and null are two very different things. The empty string ("") is a string object that just doesn't contain any characters. It's still an object though--you can call it's methods.
Null, on the other hand, is essentailly nothing. It's a special value that means "Nothing. No object here." (Ignoring for now the distinction among the null type, a null reference, etc.) You can't call methods or refer to fields on null. If you try, you'll get a NullPointerException.
1. if (someThing.equals(null))Calls the equals method on someThing to compare someThing to null. If someThing is not null, this returns false. If someThing is null it... what? returns true? Nope. Throws NullPointerException. You can't call the equals method on a null someThing.
Therefore there's no point in ever using equals(null).
2. if (someThing.equals(""))Calls the equals method on someThing to compare someThing to the empty string (""). If someThing is not null, but is empty, it returns true. If someThing is non-null and is not empty (e.g., "abc"), it returns false. If someThing is null, it throws NPE.
One generally uses the equals method, not the == operator to compare objects--that is, to see if their contents or states are equal. The == operator is used to see if two referecnes refer to the same object, or if a reference is null.
3. if (something == null ) Evaluates to true if something is null and to false if something is non-null. Never throws NPE (since we're not calling a method or accessing a field).
4. if (something == "" ) You never really want to use == to compare a String variable to a String literal like this. This checks to see if the reference something is referring to the same object as the "" is. The "" will be referring to an object in the constant pool. Even if something is the empty string, it may not refer to the same entry in the constant pool.
That is (something == "") could evaluate to false, but something.equals("") could return true.

    Since the documentation warns against using Issue_Rollback outside of an On-Rollback trigger, it may not be doing anything.
    The plain rollback statement is interpreted by Forms as a Clear_Form with no parameters (which means using the default parameter values, which means it is doing a Clear_Form(Ask_commit,To_savepoint).
    If you really want to undo any changes already made by the user when he hits the Tab or Enter key, you should issue the Clear_Form with the proper parameters. And then you have the issue of re-querying the data.
    Maybe you should explain what you really want to happen in the trigger.

    You can't do that. You can only declare a variable once.

    anyObject=new Object();As above: In the first case, its value is undefined until the new Object line if it's a local, or it's null if it's a member.
    As for which is better, it depends what you're doing.

    substring(0) will return the entire String, of course, which you would know if had actually looked at the API docs to find out what it did or even simply printed out the result to see what it did. Seemingly, however, you simply assumed you knew what it did and went on with that false assumption without bothering to even attempt to verify even though it was, already, not producing the results you expected. Instead, you focused on "the difference between contains and equals" which is self-evident in their names and obviously not the problem to begin with.

    Could anyone advise what is the difference between -1 and null in the targettype filed in marketing documents?
    For example, in Sales Quotation - Rows (QUT1) table, I found for some open sales quotations, the field is null however the DB help file suggest the default value is -1 so I suppose it should be -1 for open documents.

    I investigated that "-1" value appears in targettype field in Sales Quotation Rows (QUT1 table) when you Dublicate a Sales Quotation document (Ctrl + D). And NULL value appears when you create a new document without dublicating.
    In case you want to equal these 2 "empty"-values using T-SQL, you can use ISNULL(targettype, -1) function - this will give you -1 for both the "empty"-values

    Null is java's version of a null value. Java's version is more strict then many other languages, and will not work in a boolean expression or anywhere code expects a real and not null value. It's simply null.
    Void is java's way of declaring no return type on a method. Methods that are void take no 'return' statement and if one is provided will cause a fatal error. The exception to this is using 'return' without a value, which returns control to the caller of the method.

    The CHAR datatype stores fixed-length character strings, and Oracle compares CHAR values using blank-padded comparison semantics.

  • T-Code for reporting stock quantity difference between IM and WM

    Hi All
    I'm probably going to kick myself for asking this quastion but is there a report to show the stock quantity differences between IM and WM?
    I have searched the forum first but cannot find info.
    We have various differences in IM and WM shown in MD04 and LS26. This is usually the result of an unplanned plant to plant transfer not being recipted in at the destination plant.
    If no standard T-code is available, which tables can I join to create my own query?

    compare MMBE with LS26
    Make sure you dont enter a storage location and storage type in selection screen of LS26.
    if you post a difference with LI20, then you have just posted a difference within WM, means you moved a quantity from a bin into the difference storate type 998.  The balance of both is still equal to your stock shown in MMBE. You have to clear the difference with IM by executing LI21 transaction. Only then the quantity will disappear from difference storage type and will be adjusted in MM and FI.
    LX23 will only report real inconstencies and will adjust them.
    If you do a MM movement like 303, then this creates a transfer request in WM, this TR needs to be converted into a TO. to move the stock from the bin to the interim storage type for goods issue.
    In your case you created just a negative quant in the interim storage type for goods issue and still have a positive quant in the bin, the balance is equal to the stock shown in MMBE.

    My requirement is to get the data for all the claims where the difference between transactiondate and getdate() should be less than or equal to 7 which means any claims that happened in the past week.
    So, my query would be something like this

    where transactiondate-getdate < 8
    But my transactiondate is in int format such as 20150331 and getdate would be in the format of 2015-03-31. Can someone please help me on how can i achieve the difference between these 2 date formats in the where clause.

    @EJBs are 'special' resources. For example, @EJB (for a stateful session bean) results in
    1. Creation of the Stateful Session Bean,
    2. Other dependencies are injected into this newly created bean,
    3. If the bean has a @PostConstruct bean then that method is invoked (after invoking applicable interceptors)

    Create a sequence with some steps in the setup, some in the main and some in the clean-up stepgroup. You should also add a subsequence with an equal setup. Call this sub from a main step in the MainSequence.
    Terminate/Abort at a step in the main stepgroup of the subsequence. Look into the report for the result.
    Hint: Give unique names to your steps (statements) that you see with one blink of an eye from which stepgroup the steps are.

    The problem lies with the difference in terms used between the SharePoint user-interface and the object model. When we are speaking to end-users, they are familiar with the term "creating SharePoint team sites". However, everytime you create a "site" from the UI, an SPWeb object was created.
    It doesn't help that the MSDN documentation uses the following type of naming conventions in their code samples:
    SPSite mySiteCollection = new SPSite("http://servername/"); 
    SPWeb mySite = mySiteCollection.AllWebs["Site_Name"]; 
    SPWeb myRootSite = mySiteCollection.RootWeb;
    For me, it would have been much clearer if they wrote something like this instead:
    SPSite mySite = new SPSite("http://servername/"); 
    SPWeb myWeb = mySite.AllWebs["Site_Name"]; 
    SPWeb myRootWeb = mySite.RootWeb;
    While the description for SPSite may be valid, a typical SharePoint application web site only has onetop-level site collection. Therefore, in this url http://servername/site1/site1a/, there are actually three SPWeb objects, and only one SPSite object.

    SPSite itself is not a "collection" in the sense that comes from CollectionBase, for example. In fact, both SPSite and SPWeb inherit directly from System.Object. Therefore, to use a name such as mySiteCollection is confusing/misleading.
    The key thing to keep in mind is that as developers, we need to use the technically accurate terms when speaking with each other (even if MSDN doesn't), and reserve the marketing/UI terms when speaking with people who would never see the object model. (Note: there are examples of these kinds of terminology differences all over the place in SharePoint 2007.)

    How many rows in your source table (column) have "Balance" = 101 ??
    I hope only One.
    From your Source table all the recors will be moved to your I$ . then from your I$ it will check for the condition

    For a List, equals() is true if both Lists contain the same objects and in the same order. That's pretty straightforward, and it makes sense.
