Differences beetwen Oracle AS 10g Release 2 and Release 3
Hi
Could you give me links or just write about differences between Oracle AS 10g Release 2 and Release 3. I have books to Oracle 10g AS Release 2, and I don't know, what information are incorrect with reference to Release 3. I've found this link http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B32110_01/core.1013/b32196/whatsnew.htm#sthref7 , but Oracle 10g AS Release 3 for example does not require a metadata repository. So where can I find all diferences?
Thanks awfully for help.
Regards
Application Server 10R2 (10.1.2.0.2) includes products such as OID, Forms & Reports, Discoverer, Oracle Portal etc. These are not included in Application Server 10R3, which was a JEE only install geared towards JEE solutions.
Both versions will be desupported in December 2011 so I would spend to much time on these versions. Go with Fusion Middleware 11g : http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E21764_01/index.htm
Thanks,

Solaris x86 with Oracle RAC 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.3.0
Hello,
Maybe you can help me (new on RMAN backup) in doing this.
I have configured a single Oracle 10g database to have backup with RMAN with following steps:
1. $ mkdir $ORACLE_BASE/rman_scripts
2. $ mkdir $ORACLE_BASE/logs
3. $ mkdir $ORACLE_BASE/tracking
4. $ mkdir $ORACLE_BASE/c_backup
5. $ sqlplus sys/<password> as sysdba
6. SQL> alter system set db_recovery_file_dest_size = 50G scope=both;
7. SQL> alter system set db_recovery_file_dest='${ ORACLE_BASE}/flash_recovery_ area' scope=both;
8. SQL> alter system set log_archive_dest_10='location= use_db_recovery_file_dest';
9. SQL> shutdown immediate
10. SQL> startup nomount
11. SQL> alter database archivelog;
12. SQL> alter database open;
13. SQL> alter database enable block change tracking using file '${ORACLE_BASE}/tracking/rman_ change_track.f';
14. $ rman target /
15. RMAN> CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK
TO '/var/opt/oracle/flash_ recovery_area/ORCL/c_backup/% F';
16. RMAN> CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;
17. RMAN> CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION ON;
18. RMAN> CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 7 DAYS;
19. RMAN> exit
I need to configure incremental backup with RMAN on a two node Solaris x86 with Oracle RAC 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.3.0 installation.
We also use ASM to store database files, and have Oracle software installed on separate file systems (two Oracle roots for Node1 and Node2).
I have following questions:
1) where to put Flash Recovery Area (FRA)?
I saw recommendations to put FRA on the ASM, is this the best way to do it?
2) Can I put FRA on another file system (not on the ASM) which is available only from Node1? This way I can save space on the ASM.
3) Is it possible/recommended to run RMAN from Node1 only?
Below is the script used to run RMAN on the normal Oracle database (without RAC) which I need to change :
=============================================================================================
2.0 Oracle backup script: /opt/app/oracle/rman_scripts/backup.sh
Use this for daily backups, possiblly as a cron job.
Once a week run this: /opt/app/oracle/rman_scripts/backup.sh FULL
All other days of the week: /opt/app/oracle/rman_scripts/backup.sh INCREMENTAL
Note: You may have to change ORACLE_SID, ORACLE_BASE below to match your database.
=============================================================================================
#!/usr/bin/ksh
ORACLE_SID=orcl
ORACLE_BASE=/opt/app/oracle
ORACLE_HOME=${ORACLE_BASE}/product/10.2.0/db_1
PATH=${ORACLE_HOME}/bin:/usr/bin
LOGDIR=${ORACLE_BASE}/logs
LOGFILE=${LOGDIR}/rman.log
if [[ $# < 1 ]]
then
echo "usage: backup.sh FULL|INCREMENTAL"
exit;
fi
BACKUPTYPE=${1}
full='FULL'
incremental='INCREMENTAL'
if [[ $BACKUPTYPE == $full ]]
then
$ORACLE_HOME/bin/rman target / nocatalog log ${LOGFILE} append << eof
run {
backup database;
SQL 'alter system archive log current';
backup archivelog all;
delete noprompt obsolete;
exit;
eof
echo ''
fi
if [[ $BACKUPTYPE == $incremental ]]
then
$ORACLE_HOME/bin/rman target / nocatalog log ${LOGFILE} append << eof
run {
backup database;
backup incremental level 1 database;
SQL 'alter system archive log current';
backup archivelog all;
delete noprompt obsolete;
exit;
eof
echo ''
fiHi [email protected],
Q1) where to put Flash Recovery Area (FRA)?
A1) With RAC: on the shared storage
I saw recommendations to put FRA on the ASM, is this the best way to do it?
If you want your backups to be available for both nodes you have to use shared storage or tape using an mml library.
So if you want to use the FRA for rman backups and the database is on ASM just make ASM the standard for the FRA as well.
Q2) Can I put FRA on another file system (not on the ASM) which is available only from Node1? This way I can save space on the ASM.
A2) Than you cannot recover in case Node1 is down. Best would be to send your storage admin to a training course so he can manage the clustered raw devices needed for ASM.
Q3) Is it possible/recommended to run RMAN from Node1 only?
A3) No see A2.

Hi
I want to download the 10G Standard Edition , Now i want to know what is content of
Oracle Database 10g Companion CD Release 2 (10.2.0.1.0) ?
is it required for OCA exam preparation ?The documentation site (http://www.oracle.com/pls/db102/portal.portal_db?selected=1 for 10gR2) provides 3 sets of installation documents:
- server
- companion
- client
Each document describes what is on the CD. Right at the front. In summary:
Oracle HTTP Server
Oracle HTML DB
Oracle JDBC Development Drivers
Oracle SQLJ
Oracle Database Examples
Oracle Text Supplied Knowledge Bases
Oracle Workflow Server
Oracle Ultra Search
JPublisher
Oracle Workflow middle-tier components
It also contains the Java-based Oracle Enterprise Manager.
You do not need it to study for the OCA. However, having samples that work and ready made data is very handy.
Step 1, or possibly even step '0' of the OCA training should always be 'how to use the documentation'. At least, that's the way I teach the OCA/OCP courses. -

Difference between Oracle developer suite 9i and 6i
Hi -
Can I know what's the release difference between oracle developer suite 9i and 6i , and what's new in oracle discoverer 9i in compare with last version , we have discoverer version of 4.1...
I could not able to get from metalink anything like new features in 9i deve;oper suite.
Existing oracle financial application 11.5.8 have their forms and reports in 6i version.
What impact will have if changed with new version of application 11.5.10 in future .Oracle Developer Suite 9i is now called Oracle 9iDS. Oracle also sells Oracle 9iAS. You need to license iAS in order to run application created using iDS.
9i is fully J2EE compliant. It offers improved integration between components. Its much more feature rich than 6i. See:
http://www.oracle.com/ip/develop/ids/
for more information.
what's new in oracle discoverer 9i in compare with last versionThis question is best asked in Discoverer Forum.
What impact will have if changed with new version of application 11.5.10 in future Reports offers backward compatibility between 6i and 9i reports with a few exceptions. See Oracle Reports Obsolescence plan on OTN:

Differences in Oracle Service Bus, BPEL and human workflow
Hi Everyone,
I am newbie, don't know if its the right place to post this thread.
I want to prepare paper on differences in Oracle Service Bus, BPEL and human workflow, can anybody help me.
Till now i came to know all these things are very different, no poit comparing them but still need differences
Thanks in advance:
VikasBasic difference:
BPEL : It is used for orchastrating different processes. Its heavyweight and stores instances (stateful)
OSB : It is used for routing data between the applications
Human Workflow : It is used to handle scenarios where manual intervention is necessary.

Difference between Oracle Clusterware Network Heartbeat and Disk Heartbeat
Can soemone please explain the difference between Oracle Clusterware Network Heartbeat and Disk Heartbeat.
• If a node does not send a network heartbeat for <MissCount> (time in seconds), then node is evicted from cluster
• If disk heartbeat (voting disk) is not updated in <I/O timeout>, then node is evicted from cluster
In my openion both communcation uses network. If network is down how come disk heartbeat be updated?kamranjalal wrote:

• If a node does not send a network heartbeat for <MissCount> (time in seconds), then node is evicted from clusterThis is the interconnect messaging miss happening between the nodes. If the nodes are going to get a delay of more than 30 seconds, the node eviction will occur.
• If disk heartbeat (voting disk) is not updated in <I/O timeout>, then node is evicted from clusterThis is for the disk only. For example, due to some reason, you are not able to access the disk, may be due to a failure in the path or access media or failure in the multipath, that would all result in the disk timeout.

Difference between "Oracle Certified Specailist (OCS)" and "OPN CS"
HI,
I want to know the difference between "Oracle Certified Specailist (OCS)" and "OPN Certified Specailist". Whether both are same ? I have doubt as the logos are different for both . Any idea ...?The Oracle Certification Program main page has links to all the certification paths. Those links include the cost of each exam. For example, the Oracle Database 11g Certified Implementation Specialist credential requires the 1Z0-514 exam which costs $195. Different certification exams may have a different cost.

Differences between Oracle Discoverer 10g and 11g (EBS & Desktop)
We are in the process of upgrading from Oracle Discoverer 10g testing to Oracle Discoverer 11g.
We have had several requests (from functional users) for documentation that might reflect the changes in this release level. Does anyone have relevant documentation that might help explain what has changed so that they can be better prepared.We are in the process of going from 10 desktop to 11 plus. I do not like it as other end-users I have talked to don't either. In desktop, I could have multiple reports open at one time, move tabs from one report to another so I wouldn't have to rebuild the report again. Also, there are times I have 3 or more sessions of desktop running with multiple reports running in them. In plus, I am limited to one session and one report. That slows down productivity big time. In desktop, exporting crosstabs to excel is more user friendly than plus. For desktop, it will fill in the cells below with the data above it if it changes. In plus, it looks like a pivot table. I have read other posts on how to work around that, but not always functional. Using Dense_Rank() works sometimes depending on how the report is written. IT is researching another way but haven't heard back from the consultants. Or, I will have to modify all my excel files with formulas to do that for me. Also in desktop, I can select all and copy paste the results into excel and all data comes in. The row and column headers, page items and even the title section will paste into excel. Plus only gives you the data, no row or column headers. So I have to export it every time I need the data. I have formatted excel files that all I need to do is copy paste and data flows beautifully. As for organizing and saving reports, desktop is much better. I can save reports out on our network under different folders so I can find them faster by topic. Granted, if that directory is an open one, anyone can change/delete it. In plus, the only advantage of saving it on the database is I can sort and search for reports or users. If you make any changes in plus and then walk away from your desk, plus will shut down after a certain time period. If you didn't save it, you have to start over. Don't know if this is something IT can fix???
As we see it, plus is a step back in technology. I hope someone can change that opinion. Don't know if we are not getting the best support from whoever is working with us (Oracle or 3rd party) or we are missing something???? If so, please share.
Thanks. -

Hi all,
I would like to know what the differences between Oracle and other NoSQL database are.
When and why should we use Oracle?I suggest that you start here:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/nosqldb/overview/index.html
Is Oracle NoSQL database link with Big Data Appliance?Yes, Oracle NoSQL Database will be a component of the Big Data Appliance.
Can we use map-reduce on a single personal computer? How should we install Oracle NoSQL database to use map reduce on a single personal computer?Yes, I believe you can run M/R on a single computer. Consult the various pieces of documentation available on the web. You may run Oracle NoSQL Database on the same computer that you are running M/R on, but it is likely that they will compete for CPU and IO resources and therefore performance may suffer.
Do we also have eventual consistency with Oracle NoSQL database? Yes.
Can we lose data if master node fails?If you run Oracle NoSQL Database with the default (recommended) durability settings, then if the master fails, a new one will be elected and data is not lost.
Are transactions ACID with Oracle NoSQL database? How can we prove it?Yes, each operation is executed in an ACID transaction. The API has the concept of "multi" operations which allow the caller to perform multiple operations on sets of records with the same major key, but different minor keys. Those operations are also performed within a transaction.
