Different MacBook Pro, same harddisk?

I've got a MacBook Pro 13", and I have just bought a 15"; both are mid-2012 models. Is it possible to take the harddisk of my 13" and put it in my 15", without having to re-install OS X?

That's a pretty good assumption. Both originally came with Lion. Both will run with Yosemite.

WD My Passport 1TB USB external drive randomly ejects from my iMac and MacBook Pro.
The drive is approximately 4 years old.  When the drive is plugged in, I can see the data.  It appears to be working properly.  The only problem is that everyone of my Apple Machines are ejecting it.   Several years ago, this drive connected to Mac machines with no problems.   I have tried two separate USB cords.  I have updated the firmware.  I have tried it on my MacBook, two different Macbook Pro's, and my iMac.
All give the same result of random ejection of the drive and the error message of:
    Disk Not Ejected Properly
Eject "1TB Passport HD" before disconnecting or turning......
Searching through the web, it seems this is an common/known problem.   Does anyone know the solution?
    Thanks,

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

I took my iMac to be fixed and when I got it back, mail was not set, so I called Apple and they helped me set up mail. Now the new mail goes to trash and there is no number by the 'inbox' to tell me how many new messages I have. I cannot save a draft to 'drafts.' There is a large number by 'trash' (I think all mail went to trash - including drafts). When I send myself an emai, it goes to trash also. This is on both my iMac (the one taken in) and my MacBook Pro (same emails) which was not taken in.
I went to 'rules' but have no idea what to do there. There are no rules in the rule box. When I click 'add rule' it puts 'rule 1' in the rule box, but since that was not there when I took it in, I delete it to have an empty rule box.
Can someone pleasehelp me. I am completely stupid with all this. Do not under stand what is suppose to be set up in 'rules.'
    Thank you so much,
    Arudi

Now new mail is coming to both computer's inboxes but there is no number on the stamp icon on dock to show number of emails on the iMac. Nor is there a number by either email address under MAILBOXES/inbox (sidebar) on the iMac. This number is showing on MacBook Pro.
I also can save drafts now on both computers.
Seems the Pro is fixed and the iMac is only missing the numbers on dock icon and by addresses in inbox.
Now that the problem is less, I feel i am wasting your time but will continue so maybe I can get those numbers back.
Two emails > AT&T email and gmail.
Apple's Mail program for email - yes, and gmail.
    IMAP for both accounts.
Did not change mail configuration on MacBook.
The iMac and MacBook Pro have the same mail configuration except in Accounts/mailbox behaviours/store draft messages on the server was not marked on MacBook > it is now.
'Store junk messages on the server' was marked on one computer for gmail, but is unmarked on both now.
On the iMac, Accounts/Accounts info/Outgoing mail for gmail is smtpgmail.
On the MacBook Pro for gmail it is smpt.gmail.com (plus) my email address.
Rules/Add rule window, on the MacBook third line is 'Any Recipient', on the iMac third line is 'From."
The last box on that line has my email address on the MacBook.
The last box on that line has the last address I sent an emil to (last night), on the iMac.
On the last line on iMac, no box was selicted for 'to mailbox' > I choose 'inbox' because it is on the MacBook Pro.
Now I have a Rule #1 and am not sure I should have because there was no rules marked when I took the computer in.
Thank you. I relized I had done the labeling wrong when so much of my question appeared twice and no one else's did. I know how to do it now.

  • I am now using a different MacBook Pro, and want to install my CC, I have done that and downloaded the Photoshop App but its a trial version. How do I get the full version of the apps?

I had a new MacBook Pro that was damaged and I am now using a different MacBook pro as my primary computer (running yosemite 10.10.1).
I did uninstall the Creative Cloud off the old MacBook before I stopped using it.
I have downloaded the Creative Cloud and signed in using my adobe username and password, but when I went to download the Photoshop App it is only giving me the TRIAL VERSION.
How do I make sure that the apps are the full version that I have already paid for? (I do know that my subscription is still current)
    Thanks for your help

Shawn I would recommend utilizing the steps in Sign in, activation, or connection errors | CC, CS6, CS5.5 - http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/activation-network-issues.html to resolve the connection error which is likely preventing the software from authenticating.

  • Wi-Fi slow in Windows 7 x64 with Retina MacBook Pro / MacBook Pro (same generation)

We have two MacBook Pros same generation but one is Retina
I'm using a Linksys EA4500 router, firmware is fully up to date
Under 10.8.1 (fully up to date) both machines see a 300 to 450Mbits speed and if I ping the wireless router all of the pings are under 3ms
Under Windows 7 x64 (fully up to date) both machines see about 10-12Mbits speed but I see all sorts of time outs and high latency when I ping the wireless router, they look like 1,2,2,2,1,3,4,6,455,500,timeout,timeout,1,1,2,3 and so on
Both of these tests were done standing infront of the router
Both machines are running 5.106.198.19 of the Broadcom 902.11n driver (dated 04/05/2012)
Is any one else experiencing the same issues? I understand Bootcamp is provided as is but this driver is bunk

    I've followed that link:
    Find it here: http://www.wireless-driver.com/broadcom-wireless-driver-utility-winxp-vista-win7 -ver51001968/
and installed the driver, but I notice no difference.
The boocamp 5.0.5033 driver doesn't work any better.
Where can I find a really old driver (like bootcamp ver 2.7, which worked great with this MBP),... or.. how do I extract just the broadcom wireless driver out of the bootcamp exe or dmg file if I can get my hands on bootcamp 2.7?
Or ... Maybe my Actiontek modem/router that Centurylink provided doesn't communicate well with broadcom wifi cards?

OS X installers have always been fairly specific, hardware-wise. I haven't read anything reflecting that situation with the Recovery HD, so it may be that the Recovery HD created for the MacBook Pro does not have the necessary drivers for the Mac Pro. Obviously, nothing definitive here, but a possibility.

  • MacBook Pro won't boot with new hard drive, but a different MacBook Pro will

So here are the details. My friend and I both have 13-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pro's. Same processor and specs since they were purchased at the same time, but originally had 250 GB hard drives. His hard drive failed and needed a new one. Put a 500 GB Seagate Momentus 5400.6 in his computer, and tried using a flash drive with "Install OS X Mavericks" on it to install Mavericks on his new hard drive. No matter what, it wouldn't install. I finally was able to install OS X 10.9.4 on it by connecting the new hard drive to my computer with a USB hard drive enclosure. I put the hard drive back inside his computer and it wouldn't boot (stuck on the gray screen with apple logo and a spinning wheel). I then attached to the hard drive to his computer externally with the USB enclosure, and then it booted and worked perfectly.
So, it seemed like the problem was with something inside his computer, but then I switched our drives, and that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. I put my original hard drive into his computer, and his new hard drive into my computer, and they both booted and worked perfectly, so I have no idea why his computer will not boot with the new hard drive internally.
To summarize, his computer boots with: 1) new hard drive connected externally (won't work if it's internal), and 2) my hard drive internally
but my computer boots with: 1) new hard drive connected externally AND internally, and 2) my hard drive internally.
Both hard drives have OS X 10.9.4 installed
If anyone has any idea what's causing this and how to make his computer work with the new hard drive internally that would be greatly appreciated.

So after switching the internal SATA cables from each computer, now we have
His computer, with my SATA cable:
    1) Worked with every hard drive!
My computer, with his SATA cable:
    1) Works with 1 TB Toshiba hard drive
    2) Works with 500 GB Seagate hard drive
    3) Works with my original hard drive
    4) Flashing folder with question mark with his old hard drive
So it turns out you were right! Definitely had something to do with the SATA cables. But it's still strange that mine was able to boot with all the hard drives except the one that was originally in his. So it seems like it was some combination of his SATA cable and something else, since when his SATA cable was in his computer only 1 hard drive (my original) worked, and when it was in my computer, 3 hard drives worked. But at least its working, and I'm just gonna keep our SATA cables switched since that seems to work out fine

  • Different MacBook Pro Specs in Europe?

I was planning to finally update to the latest MacBook Pro model, buying from the German store, when I saw that the top-of-the-line 15" model lists a graphics card memory of 256 MB, not 512 MB, as in the American store. Same problem on the British Apple site. Is this just a snafu, or is Apple for some weird European Union reasons not offering a 512 MB card here?
Anyone who could clarify, I'd appreciate it.
    Jake

    Thanks for the comments, replies.
Just to reply to my own question, I checked the 'Compare Specs' section on both the German and British website, and there it lists the top-of-the-line 15" MacBook Pro as having 512 MB video card (and the basic model having 256 MB). So thankfully it looks like the Buy Page data is an error that'll be updated soon.

  • Best way to sync files on 2 different MacBook Pros?

i use 2 macbook pros. what is the best way to keep files - docs, pdfs, psds - synced on both computers?

An external hard drive that you move between the two computers. Keep all the active files you're working on on the external drive. At the end of each working session, save copies of them to the computer's internal drive before moving to the other computer for your next work session.

  • Pages document not viewing properly on two different MacBook Pros

My colleague and I are working on a document that is located on our server. When I open the document the first page is different than we he opens the document. The text is there, but not in the proper position. The second page is identical on both machines. We are both using the same version of Pages and we are both using Mac Book Pro's his is about a year old, mine is a little over two years old...both Intel. It looks correct on his and incorrect on mine.
We are both using Snow Leopard 10.6.2, and we are both using Pages 09 v 4.03
    Any ideas?

As a sidenote, the document in question is a newsletter and it appears that the issue is with the text boxes on the first page of the newsletter. The newsletter previews ok, but once it is open, the text within the boxes on page 1 is all over the place.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

  • Different optimization of audiofiles on different macbook Pros?

Has anybody noticed a difference in optimization of the audio files (m4a) between different Macs? I did :-(
I'm running IBA 2.1.1 on a mac book pro and noticed that a certain audio file get little artefacts  in the final ibooks file. If I unzip the ibook and play the optimized mp4 files in itunes the quality is OK. In quicktime the artefacts also occur.
I asked a friend to make an ibook with the same audiofiles, there are no problems at all in the optimized files and ibook.
Could this have something to do with a difference in hardware configurations?
I have a lot of these files and really need them at high quality in my ibook, so I need all the help I can get ....

This is a pretty advanced question. I would post it to the

  • PhotoShop Elements 4.0 works on MacBook Pro but does not on iMac (same OSX10.6.8)?

Photshop elements 4.0 worked fine on my MacBook Pro (same OSX 10.6.8) but when I installed it on my new iMac, it continually freezes and crashes.  Any suggestions?
Also, how do I uninstall this program on the Mac?  Used to "Remove Programs" on Windows Control Panel.  Thanks.

There are three methods to uninstall apps on a Mac.
Look to see if the developer provides an uninstall utility, if they do use that first.
Use an app like AppCleaner (Google it) to locate all of the app to remove all the pieces of it.
Drag the app to the Trash.
Why it's not working...well you will need to look on an Adobe Photoshop Elements forum for help unless someone here is able to assist.

  • Returned MacBook Pro, recieved a different model?

hey i bought a MacBook Pro on jun. 17 from the apple store and was told that it was the newest model. A few weeks later, the screen started shuting off randomly so i called up apple customer support and we did a full system restore (we formatted the hard drive before installing the os) the problem persisted so when i called back, the man said that by doing that, the problem must be hardware. so i took it in to be looked at. right when i got there i told the genius what happened and asked for an exchange rather than a repair. he simply took THE RECIEPT ONLY to the back room and about 2 minutes later came out with a new MacBook Pro(same specs)no questions asked. At first i thought he was being generous. when i got home, i opened it up and to my surprise, the MacBook Pro felt a lot heavier than the one i had before. the screen also felt a lot thicker and bulkier. the aluminum also looks and feels like it was brushed as opposed to my old one which felt just like it was on. a little concerned i called apple and gave him the serial number for both and he responded by saying that the original one that i recieved was THE LATE 2008 MODEL! and i bought it on june 17 2010! however on the reciept they both have a part number of MC347LL/A and when i looked up the serials on a website, it showed that the old macbook pro was made or the production date was in june and the new one in August (the months i bought them) i just want to know if anybody has had this happen to them, what the guy at apple was saying, and what should i do, because frankly, i liked the way the old one felt, and i really want to know if i was sold a late 2008 model in mid 2010.

I would suggest going back to the Genius, to ask about your concerns. When I had a pro replaced by a Genius, I had no problems.
Yes, go back and talk to them. I had a "genius" make a mistake recently with my MacBook Pro. The LCD screen was replaced under warranty and the genius accidentally ordered the non-hi res screen when my original MBP had the hi res screen. It only took a few phone calls and about a week for the part to come in before I had my machine back to them for proper fixing (which included replacing the logic board due to power issues which arose from having the lower res screen on it for about 1.5-2 weeks. They were good though. They did all the final repairs while I waited and it only took about 2-2.5 hours to replace the LCD twice, then to replace the logic board. The tech kept me informed and was very good at making sure it was right before L left that night.

  • Multiple Hard Drive Failures on my Macbook Pro - Entourage reminders?

Over the past 2 months I've had three hard drives fail on three different macbook pro computers.
I've retraced my steps, searched many forums, and spoken with multiple Mac Geniuses but still can't figure out what's happening. The IT guy at work is about to kill me and I really want to figure out what's going wrong so I can fix it (or change my current behaviors).
Computer #1 - Out of the box, 2-3 weeks old. I took the computer home to do some work over the weekend. I didn't turn the it off before transporting it, but I did wait for it to go to sleep completely (I've since read that it takes a few moments while things in RAM switch over to the Hard Drive to save incase of power failure). I worked on it a bit at home, mostly just internet searches and a few word documents. When I returned to work my computer was running slowly and suddenly all of the programs locked. Since I've had this problem before with my personal computer (a G4 Powerbook), I tried the force quit options to no avail so I just held down the power key to power off. When I rebooted I got the dreaded "no" symbol.
Computer 2: IT gave me a used macbook pro that they repurposed for me. I made sure to shut down before transporting this computer. A few days later, before I even got to transfer all of my files, the computer started running slowly, programs locked. I eventually got the computer to shut itself down (as IT didn't want me to do a forced reboot) but upon restarting I got an even more dreaded screen, the folder with a question mark in it.
Computer 3: It was a fairly new computer, though a bit more ram, and probably only a few months old (used by a freelancer). It worked great. I took it home several times, transfered all of my files. Set up everything perfectly. Three weeks in, after working at my desk for about 4 hours, everything began to slow down. I called IT immediately and remotely sent a force shut down message. Nothing happened for about 15 minutes so I left for a meeting. I came back a few hours later and my computer was off. When it restarted, nothing appeared. There wasn't a "no" symbol or folder with a question mark in it, just a blank screen.
I've read and thought about all of the options.
    - Large Magnet somewhere - It would have affected my personal computer (if at home) or my colleagues (if at work) or everyone else in nyc (while on the subway)
    - Too hot - Possible I suppose, but how does running iTunes, powerpoint, and entourage do this?
    - Downloaded something/Virus - We don't have administrative privileges. I can only update some software and send/receive folders. Plus, can any single file cause this much damage?
    - Moved before asleep - This might have happened on the first computer, but I doubt it could happen to three. I always shut it down now before transporting, and I was sitting at my desk for hours before I had any trouble last time.
The one common factor that I haven't mentioned.
We use Entourage as a mail client here.
Each time the computer froze, the first things to freeze were the Entourage calendar reminders. Entourage seems to run strangely with the airport, but not with our LAN. When my computer froze last time, I had the aiport on but was working off the LAN. Could Entourage cause this much trouble? Has anyone else had trouble with entourage calendar reminders or failing hard drives?
Oh, and it also always happens on a Monday. I've taken the computers home multiple times though, so I'm not sure if it's something I'm doing during the transport or not, but the computer is always off now when I move it. I also cary my personal computer with me often, same routes and bags, so I'm not sure why it's not affected.
    Thanks

It's not that simple. For example, I've 3500 songs on my MacBook but don't want them all on my phone, so I have to manually select each song again???
There has to be a solution.
Why not simply make a playlist with the songs you want on the iPhone?
