Differential measurements with a DAQ-500 card

I can't put the differential measurement mode in the Measurement & Automation Explorer. I'm using a DAQ-500 card of NI. Is this because my card doesn't support such measurement mode? There are no jumpers on the card for such a configuration...
Some help on this topic would be useful.

Hello Nicolas,
Thank you for your question regarding a DAQ-500 card. It sounds like you're having problems getting the card to operate in differential mode. Is your device perhaps a PCMCIA DAQCard-500? If so you should be able to use four analog differential inputs. Where is the problem occurring in MAX? Can you right click on the DAQCard-500 in Traditional DAQ Devices >> properties >> AI and then go to mode and select Differential there? If the device is indeed the DAQCard-500 shown here and the problem hasnt been solved you may want to try to reinstall the card.
Other resources can be found on the ni.com website by clicking the support tab at the top of the home page. Then search from Technical
Resources at the top of the page for your topic. I hope these resources help! Let me know if you need any other support with this issue.

  • Differential Measurements with AI-10X

Is it possible to make measurement in differential mode on FP-A10X, using two channels to achieve this (like on E series Cards)? I saw that it's possible with dualchannel modules, but I need to measure [0-40V] signals...and dual chanels module can't...

The only way to get differential measurments on non-differential FieldPoint modules is to use a single channel per module.
Note: the dual channel analog modules are not isolated channel to channel and share a common between channels so they can not be used differentially. The advantage for the dual channel modules is that you only lose 1/2 of the channels per module when performing differential measurements rather than 7/8 or 15/16 of the channels.

  • How can I measure 2 floating signals with a DAQ?

Hello, I have a DAQcard AI-16XE-50 with a BNC2110 adapter to connect signals.
I need to read 2 analog floating signals (less then 1 V, DC).
The configuration of the DAQcard si DIFF Input mode.
I tried to read the first signal and everythings was OK, then I tried to read the second and everything was Ok, but when I tried to read them togheter the values were modified from original values, even measuring them with an external voltimeter.
How I have to connect signals to my BNC-2110? I need some Bias resistor? or what?
    Thanks
    Lorenzo

    Hi lcaggio,
You're BNC-2210 is designed to work in differential mode with your DAQ board. It sounds like this is how you have things configured though. Here are my main suggestions for resolving this.
    1) Make sure that the channel switch is set to "FS".
    2) Make sure that your DAQ board has the BNC-2110 configured as an accessory. (accessed through board Properties in Measurement & Automation Explorer)
    3) Make sure that your DAQ board is configured for the correct voltage range and that your inputs are configured for Differential.
Now, by default, the NI-DAQ driver will sample channels as quickly as it can between channels. Since your channels are floating, it is possible that there is channel cross-talk between your two channels and that is why it l
ooks good when you sample the channel individually but looks bad when you sample both channels together. This is corrected by increasing the period of time between sampling each channel. This is called the "Interchannel Delay".
    4) The following Knowledge Base describes and links to documents that mention the importance of the interchannel delay.
What Are the Minimum and Maximum Values for the Interchannel Delay Setting on my DAQ Board?
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/websearch/9AE87416C8792FC286256D190058C7D3?OpenDocument
    5) Connect an analog channel, both CH+ and CH-, to AIGND. This will ground the channel. Then sammple your first analog channel, followed by the grounded channel and then your second analog channel. The ground channel helps with channel cross-talk (channel ghosting).
Anyway, hope these suggestions help your project. Have a good day.

  • Problem with Non Reference Single ended and Differential measurements

The following was misposted at the Real-Time DAQ category and should appear in this Multifunction DAQ category:
I am doing a differential measurement and then a non referenced single ended AI measurement using the same PCI 6025E card. Most of the time I get good measurements however a small percentage of the time I get very strange measurements.

Make sure that you have set up each of your channels for the appropriate mode of measurement. By default, Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX) has a property set for your card, either differential, nonreferenced singled ended, or referenced single ended. If all your channels are in one mode, then you can just left those defaults stay. Otherwise, as in your case, you would need to programmatically set each channel for the right mode.
For instance, in LabVIEW, the AI Configure.vi has an input parameter for "coupling and input config". This is an array of data that includes the measurement mode. Each element of the array corresponds to the element in the channels array, so you can configure each channel appropriately. Make sure that you have this set up in yo
ur program, and you should get the correct measurements.
Finally, double-check your physical connections to see that they match the measurement mode you chose. You can find this in the 6023E/6024E/6025E User Manual or the PCI E Series User Manual at the http://www.ni.com/manuals website.

  • Noise measurment of an accelerometer with the PCI-4461 card

    Hi everyone,
I'm trying to measure the noise of an single axis accelerometer with a PCI-4461 card.
First, I have manually measured this noise using an HP35665 signal analyser. I obtain something like this:
And now with LabView and the PCI-4461 card, I get this:
My question is: where does this part come from? And how to remove it ? (Since it doesn't exist with the signal analyser)
    I'm using LabView 8.5.
This is how I configured the DAQ acquisition:

    Hello
Yes indeed, the time signal seems to have two paterns (in green below), once negative and positive once about 50 ms later. This pattern is repeated with a frequency of 0.94 Hz (for simplicity let's say 1Hz).
I have reproduced this pattern with matlab using a decreasing exponential:
I have obtained this spectral signal:
That closely looks like what disturbs the spectrum, indeed..
Then I have tried to output a sinewave and acquire it:
    I didn't see any problem.
So I made the measurment with other sensors.
The sensors are ICP accelerometers. The sensors that I am using are in page 7 of these document:

(I'm currently doing an intership in this company)
And finally I found that the problem came from the cable: when I use the shielded cables, the problem is present; and when I use "normal" cable, there is not the problem, as you can see :
(In red, the sensor is connected with a non shielded cable, and in white, with a shielded one.)

  • Commutation with 6280 DAQ Card

    Hello,
I want to perform parameter identification of a three phase brushless DC servo motor. Basically I want to obtain mass moment of inertia, viscous damping coefficient and coulomb friction at the bearing. To do so, I plan to apply a step voltage input to the motor terminals and collect the position information with a DAQ card. I know the inductance and resistance values of the motor windings as well as the I want to perform parameter identification of a three phase brushless DC servo motor.
Basically I want to obtain mass moment of inertia, viscous damping coefficient and coulomb friction at the bearing.
To do so, I plan to apply a step voltage input to the motor terminals and collect the position information with a DAQ card.
I know the inductance and resistance values of the motor windings as well as the torque constant of the motor.
So when I apply a step voltage input to the terminals of the motor, I would know the torque that is applied.
And since I know the torque that is applied and also collect the position data I would be able to plot torque vs. position curve and would be able to obtain the necessary parameters from this graph.
My problem is; I don't know how i can apply a step voltage input to a three phase brushless DC motor.
Is it possible to use a DAQ card (I have a PCI 6280 DAQ card) for commutation? If it's possible is there an example about commutation of brushless dc motor?
I don't want to use a motion control card to perform the commutation since I want to observe the motor dynamics only.
    Regards.

    Hello,
for commutation you need to synchronize the output signals to the absolute rotational position of your motor. Typically this is done by implementing a lookup table to output values according to the motor's angle of rotation. This operation requires deterministic real-time behavior, so you could use a DAQ board with LabVIEW Real-Time, but for your application an FPGA-based R-Series device is probably a much better choice.
Instead of generating analog output signals, with an R-Series device you could directly generate PWM signals with sinusoidal duty cycles to control an external FET amplifier.
Here you can find example code for such a setup.
    I hope this helps.

  • 4-wire resistance measurement with 3706 DMM using 3721-ST plug-in card

    Hi,
I am new to labview and trying to get a 4-wire resistance measuremnt . I am kooking for an example program to get a 4-wire resistance measurement using a 3721-ST card on a 3706 Keithley DMM. I have one program where I always get error -1074000000. Thanks a lot for your inputs.
    Best,
    Chander

As you should be able to determine with Help>Explain Error, it's an instrument error query failure. See if you can run the error query in MAX.
You did not specify where you got the driver or attach the code. The only driver I found was from Keithley. If this is the driver you are using, you should ask them about their code.

  • Will an apication that requests the d2k-dask.dll work with a daq-mx 6036e card?

I have an aplication in labview 6.0 that does not run because there is a missing dll file. It worked well with another daq card, under the same version of the labview. I culdn't find the dll yet. Even if I can find it, I wonder if will it work with my daq card. Any help is welcome. Thanks.

After doing a Google search, it appears that the dsk-dask DLL is for use in communicating with ADLINK's data acquisition cards, not National Instruments' Multifunction DAQ devices. The NI PCI-6036E is compatible with NI-DAQmx 7.5 as well as Traditional NI-DAQ 7.4 drivers, so you will want to use one of those drivers to communicate with your NI PCI-6036E.
    Hope this helps!

  • How to use external timebase for Two Edge Separation measurement with PCIe 6351

    Hi
I am working with PCIe 6351 x series DAQ card.
    counter measurements.
Here i need to measure the time/no edges between two edges. Falling to Raising of two signals.
I got the measurement with internal time base.
here i need to synchronize the measurements with external clock from the external setup.
so i need to use that external clock, timebase for the counters.
    Any solution please..
    Regards,
    Hari

First, the VI you mention is NOT for STC timer/counters. Therefore, it won't work.
If you want to get the time interval between two edges, you want to use the Functions -> Data Acquisition -> Counter -> Count Events or Time VI. This will do the function you are looking for.

  • Building an application that uses Daq-mx cards

    hi,
I'm using Labviex 7.1 to develop an apllication that uses a couple

have to remove Labview from the computer to let the License free.
That's why i used the application builder to make a .exe with my app.
The .exe file works without problems on the computer with labview. I
then installed Labview runtime 7.1.1 on an other computer to try my app
on a computer where labview is not installed but this time it doesn't
work as a lot (more than a dozen) of DLL seem to be missing, almost all
the library that deal with the Daq-mx.
Do I have to install the cards on the computer on wich i want to test
the application ? Or maybe only the drivers of the cards ? Maybe some
of you have already faced this problem and can help me ^^
Thank you in advance and see you soon in the forum
P.S. It's gonna be quite hard to show youthe program as the computer I use to develop is not connected to the network

This may not help the issue you are having, but starting with NI-DAQ 7.4 you can simulate many of National Instruments' DAQ, tell Measurement and Automation Explorer ("MAX") that they are installed. This has solved some of my "develop on one machine, deploy on another" problems, which as a consultant seems to happen a lot.

  • How can I find the position of a robotic arm with a cFP-CTR card?

    Hello,
I use a CTR-500 to measure the pulses of 3 encoders.
The encoders are related to the 3 axis (x,y,z), to which a robotic arm is moving.
Each encoder has 2 channels (A,B) which go to each pair of Count Inputs of the CTR card.
When the robotic arm is moving on one axis, the corresponding pair of Count Inputs is increasing, but there is a phase between the one Count Input and the second one. What is more, the Count Inputs do not decrease when the robotic arm is moving to the other direction, but they still increase.
So, I cannot find easily the position of the robotic arm.
What I have done, is to try finding the position, by using only one Counter Input for each axis. This means that I use the value of the encoder as a counter, and I calculate the position with some software tricks. But for some reason, it does not work properly.
I have heard that the method I use is not proper. Instead, I have been told that I must use the phase of the 2 Count Inputs, in order to find the direction to which the robotic arm is moving. But, the Count Inputs of the CTR are augmenting in parallel, when the robotic arm is moving forward or backward.
How can I find the position of the robotic arm, as it is moving like a CNC ?
    Thank you very much.

You don't want to use a cFP-CTR-500 card.  What you have are quadrature signals.  You should be using the cFP-QUAD-510.  It has 4 channels that can handle both the A and B signals of a quadrature encoder.  It has the built in circuitry do determine the phasing of A vs. B to know when to count up vs. count down.

  • Labview 6.1 on Windows XP laptop with NI-DAQ 7.2

Installed PCMIA DAQ 6036E card with NI-DAQ 7.2on my laptop. Running XP and LabView 6.1. In Measurement Explorer I am only able to choose the +/-10V range. Expecting 4 ranges down to +/-50mV. Chose the traditional settings and not those used only for LabView 7.0.

    Hello,
how is it illustrated that you can only change the +/-10V range in MAX? Do you get an error message by changing the values?
Normally, when you create a virtual channel in MAX you can change the unit and the range in the channel assistant. After the channel is created you can still change unit and range in the properties of the channel. The scope you choose does adjust automatically to the nearest range which is available for this DAQ-Card.

    Hi,
I having problem using PCI-6025E for differential measurement on my UUT (an audio product, BTL output).
I had switch to differential mode in MAX. Measurement connection positive (ACH0), negative (ACH8).
I able to get the RMS value and freq of the measurement however the waveform is not uniform (unable to get beautiful sinewave).
When I use Scope to measure the UUT output, I able to get uniform sinewave.
I also tried to replaced the DAQ board however in vain.

  • Sound Power Measurement with 4472

Is onboard DSP a must for any Sound Power Measurement?
I know that NI-Sound Power Plus works only with 455x.
Is it simply because NI has not yet written a software for Sound Power Measurement using 4472 or is it technically NOT possibly to do Sound Power Measurment using 4472?

    1. The 6036E is a "sweet" card for high-speed, high-accuracy DAQ on the PCMCIA bus. Even at 10-times oversampling you can achieve 15-20 kHz of response with nice line resolution in the FFT. My experience with the PCMCIA bus has shown a wild variation in DAQ bandwidth (IBM/Compaq...the PITS -- Dell...the best ; and , no I do not work for Dell). For signal conditioning, I use SCXI (so I can not comment on the use of the other components). If you can live with interchannel skew, the set up looks quite promising. Our DAQ requirements demand the use of simultaneous sample-and-hold (SCXI 1140) for either two-channel hot-film measurements or multiple sound pressure measurements with precise cross-correlation (to eliminate wave reflections and e
chos within the test article). Our microphones were developed by NASA for use in VERY HIGH temperature environments, so our signal conditioning ahead of the 1140 is made from custom devices.
    2. It is important to note that any toolkit add-on to LabVIEW "could" be written by the end user using the very same subVIs distributed with the Full Development System. Sound power is merely a term used to describe a particular mathematical method involved in transforming the acquired sound data from the real domain to the frequency domain. The mathematical methods have been used for many decades. I use my own custom code originally developed in FORTRAN, converted to C++, and now embedded in a code interface node (CIN). The issue to resolve comes down to a) do you have the in-house capability to write and support detailed code development, or, b) do you purchase the toolkits and thereby achieve the capability very quickly. Although the toolkits are expensive, the burdened cost of, say, 1
additional highly-skilled employee could cost 20 times as much.
