Digital camcorders and iNtel iMacs

Hi,
I'm very tired of converting vhs tapes to digital (using the Canopus 100) and using iMovie and iDVD to create long-lasting family videos--soo I'd like to get a digital camcorder (one that records on tape). My question is, do all digital camcorders record in a format that my iMac will recognize and import? thanks

Dad,
I have a Sony DCR-TRV480, which is a Digital 8. iMovie recognizes it fine. A nice feature of the Sony is it has a pass through. You can plug a VCR into the Sony, then plug it into the Mac, thus transferring old tapes to digital.
It has both USB & Firewire (400) out.
The camera is not as small as the true digital ones are, and I'm not sure if they have the pass through. You would have to go to the Sony site & read the specs real close to see about the pass through option.
The pass through also runs the video through a very basic TBC (time base corrector).

  • Emagic mt4 and intel iMac does not work with 10.4.5

    Hi there,
after updating my iMac on 10.4.5 my MT4 does not work any longer. It is still shown in the system profiler! But that`s it! After I`ve installed the latest driver (emagic v1.7), it was not shown in the audio/midi preferences. On my G4 with 10.3.9 it is still working properly. I have tried to use it with Garage Band 3, while I am waiting for Logic Pro 7.2 . It worked in the begining, but now the USB connection on the MT4 does not light up, but the midi devices. My question is: Do I need a driver using Logic Pro 7.2 with an Intel iMac? Includes the update the driver for Emagic MT4?
thanks a lot for any reply, experiences and clues

    Hi Glyn,
I will try to get some driver information of apple. Emagic is apple now, so who else could that know?! I use an m-audio fw audio-interface. For that m-audio got a driver and it works by now. Fortunately! I will tell you if apple got a clue.
Thanks for reply ( So I am not the only one in universe with that problem!)

  • External hard disk for use with quicksilver 2002 and intel imac 24"

i am wanting to purchase an external hard disk to be used with both a g4 and an intel imac 24".
i am considering a seagate barracuda 500gb or 750gb and purchasing an external case separately.
    interfaces - usb2, firewire 400 and 800.
Do I need a case with the "oxford chipset" to have it work.
Are all seagates compatible these days.
I was looking at a ultra ata100 hard disk. Will this disk connect automatically to the enclosure or will additional cables be required
Is the Ice Cube Generation II Ide enclosure ok to use.
    Appreciate any help given

    Hi-
The Ice Cube uses an Oxford chipset, (part of the external housings onboard controller) so it should be fine. The Oxford chipset has been shown to give the best compatibility and performance, thus being an desirable feature.
    http://www.pccasegear.com/prod2307.htm
Using a Seagate Ultra ATA 100 drive should give you good, quiet, reliable service. There are no problems with the Seagate ATA drives.
Using the drive and housing with firewire will give you the best results, and firewire will allow you to use a bootable backup on the external drive, should the need be.
The housing comes with all the necessary cables to connect and use your external drive.
Insert the hard drive into the housing, connect the power and the firewire, format the hard drive, and you are ready to go..........

    Hi laf66,
Has the Vista Firewall been set up to allow AIM6.exe as an Exception ?
This is the XP method http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page12.html#_Service
How is your router or routing modem set up to allow the AIM ports as opposed to the iChat ones ?
AIM needs to be using UPnP or have ports 1024-5000 allowed.
(don't ask me how AIM and iChat work the ports out but they do)

  • I can't use tabbed browsing with my VPN and Intel iMac

I had no problem using tabbed browsing (with Safari) when connecting to
my virtual private network (go to my pc), when I used my iMac G5. Now that
I'm using an 'Intel' iMac, when I tab back to my VPN, it defaults to my log in
screen. I've checked my Safari settings, and they're all the same as my iMac
G5. Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks,

  • Transferring Files Directly Between G4 eMac (Tiger) and Intel iMac (SL) ?

I believe the answer is you can't, but I am just double-checking.
When I had a G3 iMac and a G4 eMac, each using Tiger, next to each other I could connect them via ethernet and transfer files across.
The purchase of an Intel iMac (in place of the G3) two years ago made this impossible.
    Has anything changed?
    Is it still impossible?
Currently I have to put files on an external Hard Drive or USB 2.0 Memory stick to move them from one computer to the other.
Needless to say, this is rather time-consuming and fiddly.
Incidentally, I am looking for a cheap (as in "free") solution, not one costing a small fortune.

Well, I would try the Internet Sharing method first. And if you run it from your Intel Mac (wireless, right?), you can share out your internet connection to the other Mac. What'll happen is, that will effectively turn your iMac into a router for the purposes of the eMac.
So, after connecting the cable, on the iMac, go to System Preferences - Sharing - Internet Sharing - and share the internet from your Airport connection to "computers using Ethernet". Click Start.
Now, on the eMac, go to System preferences - Network - Ethernet, and let us know what IP address you're getting. Hopefully it'll be something like 192.168.2.2. The iMac will be the router at 192.168.2.1 and you should be able to connect to that address using the Finder. Your iMac will still have its regular internet connection.

  • USB Audio Devices and Intel iMac

With the release of 10.4.10 and the subsequent Intel audio update to suppress the "popping" noise, Apple managed to break my output of audio through an external USB sound card (in my case a Yamaha DP-U50). The device is still recognized as an input device and works fine for that purpose -- output is simply not available.
What's more frustrating is that the device works fine with my PowerBook G4 (in both Tiger and Leopard), so it appears to be Intel specific.
From the forums then, the problem also appeared to affect many other's input devices as well.
It doesn't appear that anyone ever managed to find a fix for this issue in 10.4.10 and consequently, I'd been expecting Apple to simply fix the bug in Leopard.
Well...I installed Leopard 2 days ago and there's been no change. The device is still recognized as an output device by the G4 PowerBook and not by the Intel iMac.
If anyone has gotten such a device to work with either Leopard or 10.4.10, I'd really appreciate some troubleshooting tips.

I do have a Yamaha AP-U70 attached via USB to a PowerBook G4. It did work as audio input and output device in tiger (up to 10.4.11) but is now in leopard only visible as input device.
I would be very happy if someone finds a hack to reenable it.
    regards,
    André

  • New keyboard and intel iMac not working at startup with Leopard. Help?

    Hi,
I'm using an Intel Core Duo 20" iMac and Apples' new keyboard. With Tiger, at first the keyboard wasn't recognized by the system during startup. After installing keyboard software update 1.2 everything worked fine.
Now I've installed Leopard and I'm back to where I was: the keyboard again isn't recognized at startup, so I'm forced to use the remote during startup to change to the windows partition , and I'm not able to reset PRAM settings.
    Anyone with a solution?
    Thanks

Start-up commands are NOT recognized on Core Duos - YET...
there is an expected firmware update in the near future
for all start-up commands - use the old keyboard
ALSO - holding down the menu button on your remote during start-up allows you to select a start-up drive while moving with the control function
    +found that by accident...+
    Thanks,

  • Headless g4, ibook and intel imac (2.33ghz) issue

Ok so I have a small network hooked up through an ethernet switch. I have my iMac running ARD 3.2 and it works perfectly with my ibook both through ethernet and airport. When I plug my headless g4 quicksilver into the ethernet swtich I get nothing. Even using a fixed IP address and searching for it on ARD wont allow me to connect and control it. I've tried attaching a VGA cable and the VGA to mini DV adapter to my ibook and using that as the G4's "monitor" and nothing still. When i boot from the g4 disk on my ibook, I cant see any of the SATA drives hooked up to the SATA card inside and i am at a complete loss of what to do. I really need to be able to access those hard drives and do not have a monitor with which to set up the g4 tower. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I've tried attaching a VGA cable and the VGA to mini DV adapter to my ibook and using that as the G4's "monitor" and nothing still.
That won't work. The video port on your iBook is output only, for using an external monitor with the iBook. You cannot use that port to use the iBook's screen with another computer.
When i boot from the g4 disk on my ibook, I cant see any of the SATA drives hooked up to the SATA card inside
I presume you mean via Firewire Target Disk Mode? If so, that won't work with drives connected to an any PCI card. Target Disk Mode on a G4 will only show the primary ATA hard drive connected to the motherboard's ATA bus.
As to ARD, I presume that you are certain that the ARD client on the G4 is active and appropriately set up? If so, I've read reports of difficulties observing and controlling some systems when they don't have a monitor connected, at least to get things set up and working. So it's quite possible that you'll need to borrow a monitor for the G4, at least temporarily, to get everything set up and working, particularly if you haven't or aren't certain you have set up the ARD client.
    Regards.

  • AVCHD manageable with FCP 5.1.4 and Intel iMac 2.16 MHz ?

    Hi,
I am looking into a new camcorder Sony HDR XR 500 (520) and one of the reviews I have read mentions that the AVCHD format requires specific software and the latest computers. Do I have no chance to work those files with my current configuration? What would I need? Thanks!

    Hi gogiangigo,
    Thanks for that information!
I have read in the FCP 6 marketing page that AVCHD is supported natively — if the text syntax doesn't disguise the truth! But in some other comments I read, FCP will convert AVCHD on import into a transitional format and the files size is blown up. What's the truth about it?
And will a dual 1.5GHz PowerMac G5 also handle FCS 2 and AVCHD ? (seemingly not)

  • Best digital camera and camcorder...

What are some good budget digital camcorders and a digital camera for the MacBook? My wife and I are expecting our first child in December and we're both in college (I have a degree in visual communications, and I'm going back for computer programming), and she's going for nursing.
We're kind of tight on money fixing up our house and getting things ready for the baby, and I've got 'proud parent disease' where I wanna take pictures and video tape EVERYTHING all the time.
    Any suggestions?

My suggestion is to not cheap out on a digital camera (no experience with camcorders). It may save you money up front but the quality of the product may come back to bite you (much like getting a Windows PC versus a Mac ).
I use this review site: http://www.steves-digicams.com/
I'm not an expert, but among my circle of very amateur photography friends Canon is considered to have the best quality lenses and image processors. I myself went with a Canon PowerShot A540, a 6-megapixel consumer model, and it's been great. The A-series filled all of my requirements--took AA-type batteries instead of expensive proprietary ones, had features that the super-compact line didn't, including good basic video recording (for quick clips), and it wasn't as bulky as an SLR or "prosumer" model. My brother and another friend got the A540's less expensive sister, the A530; the only reasons I didn't go with that was the smaller screen and the video recording wasn't as good.
I'd avoid Kodak and HP branded cameras, as well as any generic brands. Most everyone else should be decent too, including Sony, Fuji, Olympus, etc.

  • I have an intel iMac OS X 10.8.3 and haven't yet backed up anything. Please advice on best ways of backing up everything before it's too late - external drive etc.

I have in Intel iMac OS X 10.8.3 and haven't yet backed up anything.  Please advise on best ways of backing up everything (external drive etc?) before it's too late.

Buy any external hard drive - USB/Firewire/Thunderbolt, etc that is compatible with your Mac. Opinions will vary, but I use Western Digital externals without problem, others will suggest LaCie, but there are no shortage of other manufacturers making equally good drives, I'm sure. It's preferable to buy a drive that is equal to the size of your internal HD, some will say twice the size. Mine are less than the size of my internal HD, but I don't have masses of data.
The simple and free option is to then connect the drive to the Mac and turn on Time Machine. Leave the drive permanently connected and it will backup your data regularly.
An alternative, and my preferred option is to use SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner to make regular bootable clones of your drive. Some (me included) keep multiple backups - clones and TMachine.
When I had my HD replace recently I re-installed from the clone and was back where I left off in around an hour.

  • Intel imac and dv bridge

My new intel imac with ilife 6 will not "read" the hollywood dazzle bridge i have attached to a vcr. It worked with ilife 4 but now i get a message that it will not control the camera. That was always the case, and I manually would hit play, but nothing comes in.
Any suggestions? I can't afford to purchase more equipement. If this is incompatible, does any have an inexpensive alternative? I am just copying family movies from video to dvd.

I found something which works with cameras, but I don't know if it'd work with your analogue-to-digital bridge - but try it!
Open an existing project, connect your Dazzle, press Play on the VCR, now play an existing video clip within that project, then slide the iMovie Scissors/Camera (Edit or Import) slider to Camera and click on Import.
Playing an existing clip sometimes "kickstarts" (..how many times have I used that word?..) the system into accepting more input, whatever the source..

  • Is there a way to connect and view an external monitor only on my Intel iMac?

I have an Acer 15.6" monitor connected to my Intel iMac via VGA cable and Mini-DVI to VGA adapter. I am running Lion (V10 7.3) and would like to direct my image to the external display only. The preferences pane does not offer that option. Is there some way to do it?

Do you have a desktop machine running iTunes?
If so then yes, setup home sharing and you can stream anything in your iTunes library to your iPad.
